With a background in fine arts, she had no prior experience in computer graphics when she was hired to design the first digital icons and typefaces for the Mac. Using graph paper and pixel constraints, she created some of the most enduring symbols in tech history, including the Happy Mac, the Command key symbol, and the original Mac fonts like Chicago and Geneva. Her designs humanized technology, making computers intuitive and accessible to non-technical users. After Apple, she continued shaping digital interfaces at NeXT, Microsoft, Facebook, and Pinterest, and today, she serves as a Design Architect at Niantic Labs while selling limited-edition prints of her iconic designs.About Amy & Jen HoodAmy and Jen Hood are the twin sister duo behind Hoodzpah, a Southern California-based branding agency known for its bold, strategic, and personality-driven design work. Beyond client work, they are passionate about helping creatives build successful careers—they wrote Freelance, and Business, and Stuff, a practical and empowering guide to running a creative business, and have launched resources for designers, including brand identity courses and custom fonts. Born in 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, Betty Cooke was a trailblazing designer celebrated for her minimalist and sculptural jewelry. Her work is defined by clean lines, geometric forms, and a timeless elegance that resonated across generations. After studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she later became a beloved faculty member, Betty opened her own studio and eventually co-founded The Store Ltd., a Baltimore institution that showcased her work for over five decades. Her jewelry, often handcrafted in silver and gold with touches of wood or acrylic, is iconic for its simplicity and boldness—pieces that remain instantly recognizable as “Betty Cooke.” Cooke's influence is immortalized in museums, galleries, and in the collections of those fortunate enough to own her designs. Her legacy is one of innovation, elegance, and unwavering dedication to her craft.About Ellen Lupton:Ellen Lupton is one of the most influential voices in contemporary graphic design. Born in 1963, she is a celebrated designer, writer, curator, and educator whose work has profoundly shaped design education and practice. After graduating from Cooper Union in 1985, she became a curator at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, where she curated groundbreaking exhibitions that connected design to culture and society. Ellen is perhaps best known for her book Thinking with Type, first published in 2004, which has become an essential guide for designers and is used in classrooms worldwide. Beyond her writing, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the Graphic Design MFA program at MICA, inspiring generations of designers with her innovative teaching methods. Her body of work extends to over 20 books, exploring topics from typography to storytelling in design. Ellen's contributions continue to influence how designers think, create, and communicate in today's visual world.Keep up with what Ellen Lupton's up to:Instagram  |  Website ____View all the visually rich 1-min reels of each woman on IG below:Instagram: Amber AsayInstagram: Women Designers Pod

Type Design School Round Up Lots of nerdy goodness this week, and don't worry, no April Fools gags here - just good, honest typographic fun. We're looking at a cool open source tool that fixes some of the pain of ragging your web type, and finding out about a designer with a background in graffiti and who uses this skill in their typographic and design work. We're also reading about two really cool revival projects; one out of France presented by the awesome folk at Velveteen, and one by Brandon Nickerson, which was an accidental typeface born out of a logo project. For this week's Nerd Alert we're chatting about type education. In this first part of a few conversations we want to have about this topic we're looking at formal type education schools. We're talking about some of the ‘big' names you often hear thrown around (Type @ Cooper, TypeWest, Type Paris, Reading, and The Hague), and talking about the differences between them, and why a formal program might be a good idea for someone. We're going to follow this up with an episode about more self-directed, virtual, and shorter options, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for those. They just have to put type on a page and people would immediately recognise the brand It's very difficult to maintain what's good about the brandThey're rooted in this idea of being digital-friendly but they're falling in line with everybody elseIf you spend $250,000 for a photo campaign, that gets used for one season. If you spend the same amount for a font that you use for 20 years, the cost is negligible More about MatteoMatteo Bologna is the Founder and Creative Director of New York-based branding studio Mucca, a singular personality whose multidisciplinary background in architecture, graphic design, illustration, and typography has helped him build one of the most respected companies in design. Over his celebrated career, Matteo's focused but fun-loving approach has earned strong client partnerships across countless industries, from startups, small retailers and beauty powerhouses to hospitality where he has designed for various renowned hotels and restaurants. In this 19th episode, I talk with Tom Foley, Creative Type Director for Monotype, based in London. Tom reflects on his deep experience designing type in the past 10 years and how things have changed with the introduction of variable fonts, current type design tools,  the technical side of modern type, the use of AI to create Chinese fonts, and how type designers share their fonts. Not having worked in the type industry myself, I was intrigued to hear about working at Monotype, the world's largest type foundry and creators of a vast 10,000 font library including Helvetica, Univers, and Frutiger as well as creating custom fonts for major brands. Tom also shares the role of custom fonts compared to open-source fonts and how having your own company font helps differentiate your brand.Tom Foley is responsible for leading a team of type designers creating fonts for the Monotype Library and corporate brands. Words and letters are in Tom’s blood - his great-grandfather was from a family of stonemasons that specialized in letter carving, and his uncle was a sign painter. Tom spent seven years at type foundry Dalton Maag where he progressed from font developer to creative director, and worked to solve the typographical problems of some of the world’s well-known brands. He joined Monotype in July of 2018, and he continues to work on custom fonts and leading his team of type designers from the Monotype office in London.About Tom Foley:https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-foley-75062158/https://www.monotype.com/studio/tom-foley

In this episode, I chat with Brooklyn based creative studio and dynamic duo, Wade and Leta. Wade and Leta do it all, they're graphic designers, art directors, photographers, public speakers, they do event design, branding, sculpture, book design, type design, retail design, film, and more. If there's something they haven't done, they want to try that too. They're a duo who personifies today's topic of “Taking the Leap”. They're constantly pushing themselves into new directions and mediums. They love a good challenge, they see constraints as opportunities, and they thrive on intensity. This drive has led them to create work for a truly impressive roster of clients that include Gucci, The New York Times, Herman Miller, IBM, Instagram, Facebook, Adobe, Airbnb, Target, and the list goes on. We discuss the lessons they've learned on their journey so far, how they're able to continually “take the leap” into new directions and opportunities, how keeping an open mind and fresh perspective is key, how important it is to ask for help and learn from others, their pursuit to continually “level up”, what their dream project is, and much more. This conversation was really inspiring to me. Wade and Leta are always striving to create their best work and it's hard not to be in awe of them. These two have such wonderful energy and a refreshing perspective on life and career. I hope you're just as inspired by this one as I am.To find out more about Wade and Leta, you can follow them on instagram @wadeandleta, @wadejeffree, @letasobierajski or online at wadeandleta.com.

While studying graphic design at university she noticed that the type projects covered in the books she found in the library were invariably created by men, so she started her own list of great work done by women. The list continued to grow after she left university and joined People of Print, and she saw the opportunity to create the book she had longed to read. The resulting publication features more than 40 women working in the type industry, funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over £10,000 – more than double its initial target. In this conversation, Amber speaks about how she ran that campaign, and explains that with her list still growing, there are lots of opportunities for building on the book and doing more to support the community that has gathered around it.

Going the Extra Mile to Catch Your Breakthrough with Matt Vergotis Let’s get real for a second… We live in a digital age where human zombies are glued to their screens and expect instant stardom after hitting publish. When overnight success isn’t unlocked, It’s easier to quit and hop on board the next trend that may help them strike gold. One of the harder lessons I’ve learned in life is that there are no shortcuts—everything takes time. I’m talking countless hours, days, weeks, months and years obsessively hammering away at honing your craft. Something we have to remind ourselves is that continuing to show up when it’s not convenient and going that extra mile in your work can help you edge closer to catching that looming breakthrough. Patience, Disconnecting & Chin Wags This brings me to today’s guest, Matt Vergotis AKA the Verg. Matt is the prime example of being surgical with practice, having patience while knowing when to disconnect from the digital world. When he’s not surfing the Gold Coast and spending time with his family, you can find him crushing Corporate Identities, Branding, Logos, Type Design, Calligraphy and Hand Lettering. It’s a trip when I listen to Spotify and know that I’m looking at the titles he crafted on some of the most popular playlists, it makes the music I’m listening to that much better. Matt is a down to earth, super energetic dude but knows how to throw down and get to work. In today’s episode, we surf around topics such as: Putting in the time and deliberate practice The importance of presentation and going the extra mile Creating for you and future clients, not for Instagram. Having multiple creative outlets Breaking curation and experimenting with different styles My expectations were shattered with this episode and his transparency on pricing is what I think you’ll sink your teeth into the most. Ellen Lupton is a design thinker of the highest order. As curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City, she has produced numerous exhibitions and books, including Thinking with Type (2004), which is used by students, designers, and educators worldwide. Her most recent book, Design is Storytelling, published in late 2017, explores the connection between good design and a compelling narrative. In this episode of Change Lab, Ellen makes a compelling case for the integral relationship between storytelling and design, drawing connections between a well-designed experience and the mythological hero’s journey and citing Ikea as Exhibit A for a successful experiential design narrative. Finally, Ellen reflects meaningfully on her role as an educator and the importance of approaching design as a full-body sensory experience guided by the physicality of the materials used and the making process itself. Jovica Veljović, born in Serbia in 1954, has been designing typefaces for URW, ITC, Adobe and Linotype since 1980. He received his master’s degree in calligraphy and lettering at the Art Academy in Belgrade, where he also taught Typography until 1992. Since 1992 he lives in Germany and has been a Professor in Type Design and Typography at Hamburg University. Jovica Veljović talks about how he got interested in typography and type design by encountering a marvelous book about alphabets by Hermann Zapf. He also refers to his first awareness of letterforms as a small kid looking at the beautiful handwriting of his grandfather, who was always showing him his special letter ‘k’. We wonder how Jovica started working for ITC were he met Herb Lubalin, just two weeks before his death. Looking back Jovica is aware that he had the chance to meet the right people. People who really cared about what they’re doing. And this mentality or way of living is exactly what he would like to pass on to the younger generation. Recorded at the Klingspor Museum Symposium – on the occasion of their 60th birthday – in Offenbach Germany. “PRINTING, ILLUSTRATION, TYPE DESIGN, type-founding, type engraving, bookbinding, graphic design, stone cutting and digital type design are things that have occupied me for over seventy years, and do to this day.  Excepting the bit of letter cutting in stone, these occupations have all put dinner on the table; but it has been my good fortune to have loved the work.” This is how Jim Rimmer (1934-2010) starts off his Pie Tree Press, Memories from the Composing Room Floor (Gaspereau Press, 2008) Rimmer was a mainstay of the letterpress/private press community in Vancouver for much of the past 50 years. Trained as a commercial compositor in the 1950s, his aesthetic taste,  artistic talent and mechanical know-how combined to produce a long, significant career as a graphic artist, printer, type designer and caster.  Despite the many fonts he designed, engraved and cast, despite his beautiful linocuts, and despite the fact that in 2004 he completed the first engraving and casting of Carl Dair's Cartier face in metal, Jim is remembered most of all for love. The love of a business that he was passionate about; and the love that he instilled in so many, for books, the printed word, and the letterpress printing process. An archive of material from the last decade of Jim's work is held by the Special Collections Library at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. I met there recently with Eric Swanick, Head of the Library, to talk about Jim Rimmer.

Today I have Tarun Deep Girdher on Audiogyan. Tarun is a Activity chairperson at NID. He is passionate about and also teaches Type Design, Typography, Printing Technology, Illustration, Visual Narratives, and Environmental Perception. Tarun's professional projects include socially relevant communication projects, he has deep concerns about inclusive design, disability, gender sensitization, etc. He has designed more than two dozen publications. Apart from such a huge body of work, Tarun has also designed over thirty logos including Right to Information, and None of The Above (NOTA) for the Government of India - and that is the topic of our discussion today. Designing for the government. * What is a logo? How has your definition of a logo changed over time and after designing more than 30 logos for the government? Any milestone logos which changed your perception of what a logo is? * I saw the RTI logo and its guideline document. Can you tell us the process of arriving at the final logo? From brief to final approval? Using Bell Gothic, other language script renditions, the Pantone Blue which you recommended, usage, and overall brand guidelines. * Similarly, can you briefly tell us about the NOTA logo * What is the biggest reason you kept both the logos super simple - Easy to recall, easy to reproduce or thinking of the person lowest in the educational pyramid? * A logo is the simplest way to associate with a brand. Traditionally speaking, it is always simple. What is special while designing for the government? What new dimensions get added? * How sensitive is the government about design? From function to aesthetics? Not just the current government but over all? * I am heavily influenced by the western school of thought - Do your user research, try out MVPs etc... But the actual act of designing most of the time happens solo and then we need teams to execute it. Generally, speaking, design by a community is not recommended. Do you agree and what were the 2 big challenges that you faced while designing for the world's biggest democracy - where everybody had an opinion? * How can students and professionals contribute their skills to government institutions and projects to improve standards of design? * What is one tip/suggestion you would like to give all students and designers who critic on new identities, logo or designs, without understanding the context or constraints?
