It's thought Shortland Street should make up a big part of TVNZ's new digital strategy. Our longest running soap will drop from airing five nights a week in February, to three. It will now continue with support from NZ On Air and the New Zealand Screen Production Grant. South Pacific Pictures Chief Executive, Kelly Martin told Heather du Plessis-Allan the show is streamed more 20-million times annually on TVNZ Plus. She says linear ratings also remain strong, as well as its engaged audience. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the weeks since Warner Bros Discovery and TVNZ announced cutbacks in their newsrooms, much of the focus has been on what this means for journalism in this country. The moves come amid wider belt-tightening across the television sector, as falling terrestrial TV ratings means companies are now competing against global giants more than ever to hold our attention. And that means it's not only newsrooms that could soon be fighting for survival. This episode, Chelsea talks with Kelly Martin, CEO of South Pacific Pictures, about the impacts on the production sector, and with Lauren Whitney, chief executive of the Comedy Trust, about why this could limit opportunities for the comedy sector. On today's show: https://thehotshotwakeup.substack.com/ We discuss the slowly reemerging policy of “put everything out” that has crept back into both the political realm and the tech side of the wildfire industry. A policy that clearly didn't work. We talk about the importance of bringing operational and field-capable people into these discussions and how pivotal it is to support the base layer of the entire system, our wildland firefighters. Kelly is a former Hotshot, (ret) Chief of Fire and Aviation at Yosemite National Park, current wildfire commissioner, and vice president of the International Association of Wildland Fire. I would also like to thank the monthly subscribers to the Substack. I put out over 100 episodes this year and well over 150 articles on wildfire and wildfire issues around the world. I do this in my free time without sponsorships or ads. There are over 14,000 of you in this community that have free subscriptions, and I thank you. If you would like to see this continue into the new year, please consider monthly subscriptions that support everything I do. Thank and have a happy new year! https://thehotshotwakeup.substack.com/

On today's show: https://thehotshotwakeup.substack.com/ I welcome Kelly Martin to discuss the new Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission's report to Congress, everything happening with the workforce, legislation, and beneficial fire. The Presidential Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission was established in 2022. Kelly was one of 500 applicants who applied to voluntarily serve on this 50-member Commission. She was selected to fill the primary seat representing Wildland Firefighters. Kelly's 35-year federal career as a wildland firefighter provided invaluable technical and subject matter expertise to the Commission, ultimately obtaining unanimous consensus on comprehensive workforce reforms (see recommendations 84-103 in the Commission report). Kelly is also the co-founder and past President of Grassroots Wildland Firefighters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the public, agency officials, and members of congress with real life lived experiences to promote urgent modernization reforms for the federal wildland fire program. Her organization provides education and advocates on behalf of thousands of federal wildland firefighters. She is also a current Burn Boss for The Nature Conservancy (TNC), mentoring and coaching other TNC employees and nonprofit organizations to help them become more skilled and proficient in applying “good fire” on the landscape. Her current work includes providing leadership for the Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (WTREX) and other Training Exchanges (TREX) events throughout the US. Beginning in 2024 Kelly will begin her 2 year tenure as President of the International Association of Wildland Fire, a group she has been working with for close to 10 years. IAWF is dedicated to uniting the global wildland fire community in sharing knowledge and expertise through conferences, workshops, and creating position papers relative to contemporary wildland fire issues. Kelly has extensive experience as a field practitioner serving as a Complex Burn Boss; Fire Behavior Analyst; Operations Section Chief and has served on Type 1 and Type 2 Interagency Incident Management Teams for over 20 years. Her capstone career promotion was becoming and the first female and one of the longest-serving Chief Fire and Aviation Management Officer at Yosemite National Park from 2006-2019. It's a fantastic conversation.
In this episode, Kelly Martin talks about her career in wildland fire and how being a woman defined her career path. She discusses how W TREX training creates a community for women in wildland fire allowing more women to enter the field confidently. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/life-in-the-wildlands/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/life-in-the-wildlands/support
The Wildfire Mitigation and Management Commission, established in 2022 at the behest of Congress following the 2021 Infrastructure Act, recently released a substantial report highlighting recommendations that will shape the future of wildfire policy and action in the US. Fifty commission members were charged with creating the recommendations, one of which was Kelly Martin—who is a founding member of the Grassroots Wildland Firefighter organization and a longtime wildland firefighter. We had the chance to chat with Kelly about the commission, and she was able to provide us a glimpse into the process and efforts behind their whopping 340-page report. We spoke explicitly about how the recommendations relate to wildland firefighters, as well as what Kelly was able to bring to the commission with her extensive background working in wildland fire operations. We're hoping to release a few more episodes about the commission report, which will focus on other recommendations and themes—including community resilience/adaptation, Indigenous burning and scaling up projects that reduce wildfire risk. Stay tuned!Kelly is an outspoke advocate for wildland firefighters through her work at Grassroots Wildland Firefighters, which you should definitely check out if you haven't already. We Oklahomans often find ourselves behind the wheel or behind a desk, causing us to fall behind on physical activity. When our built environment lacks sidewalks, trails, bike lanes – in other words, walkability and active transportation – it becomes even harder to get up and be physically active. Efforts are underway within communities of all sizes to make them easier and safer to walk, jog, run and bike – not only in residential neighborhoods, but also in business districts that profit from increased foot traffic. In this episode, hear from Ron Frantz and Shane Hampton of the University of Oklahoma's Institute for Quality Communities on how walkability and placemaking – making public spaces more appealing – is happening throughout Oklahoma and why it's good for our physical and economic health. You'll also hear from Kelly Martin, an elementary school principal. She explains how community partnerships led to walking trails that benefit numerous students and community members. Doug Walton, TSET Healthy Living Program coordinator in Muskogee County, also joins us to talk about Connect Muskogee and its plan to tie together every aspect of transportation system, including sidewalks, trails and bikeways. In this episode Michael talks with Kelly Martin. Kelly has been a real estate agent in Bozeman since 2018. In 2019 he joined Windermere and has been growing his business steadily ever since. He realized that there was an untapped audience in Facebook and YouTube. One of the Ninja concepts is to be a Real Estate Trusted Advisor. A wonderful way to do that is to help clients with information about more than just Real Estates. Letting out of area buyers better understand what a community is like. What services and business are available to them? Helpful information that may help them to make a clear decision if Bozeman would be the right place to move to. Kelly began to offer up this information in a few diverse ways. He created a Facebook group called, moving to Bozeman https://www.facebook.com/groups/movingtobozeman on this group he gets questions like this on "Hi! Has anyone moved in from overseas? I am hopefully coming over from England." His group quickly grew to over 1000K followers and continues to grow. He says that he monitors it daily and want to make sure that he is engaging with the followers as the questions come in. His other idea was to begin to do short videos of him interviewing new and existing business in Bozeman. His videos are short and to the point and hosted on his youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwNKMoHNZ_xYa9CxKai_YAg What I love about this is he is promoting local businesses and at the same educating the community on what type of resources and businesses are available in Bozeman. Being a trusted Real Estate Advisor requires us to think out of the box. This business is not just about buying and selling homes, it is so much more. It is about providing information that is helpful for others and connecting people within their community. Kelly is doing just that. Matt Marshall, a Radnor resident who joined the Dom Giordano Program two weeks ago, calls in to preview tonight's meeting, explaining how things have settled since the last time the Dom Show has checked in on the situation. After that, Kelly Martin, another involved deeply in the fight over the mascot name change, dials in and gives her recap of a meeting between the Radnor School Board and the National Congress of American Indians, as the board looked to determine whether or not the name is offensive. This week we chat with one of my favorite humans on the planet, Kelly Martin. Kelly and I met at one of the top musical theatre programs in the country. After graduating she was signed by the premier agent in NYC, but shortly after had a realization….this was not the life she wanted. So she packed her bags, and moved across the country to start fresh and break into the design industry. I was super excited to get Kelly on here. She opens up about what it was like to break from the norm and forge her own path. She shares about having agency over the creative pursuits in your life + the importance of doing work you're passionate about.
Just over a year ago, I decided it was time to hire an assistant. I wanted to grow my business and also do less of the things that weren't my specialities. That's when Kelly came into my life and now, she's my right-hand lady/operations manager/integrator. I'm super excited to introduce you to her and let you all in on what it's really like behind-the-scenes working at Jenna Rainey HQ. Kelly is just the organization to my Type B-ness. She is the poking holes to my big crazy ideas. She is the detailed-oriented Asana task champion. She just has absolutely changed my life. In this episode, Kelly gives some really good, honest answers about: - My strengths and weaknesses - How we met and the interview process - Why we make a strong team together - What she does, what her roles and responsibilities are within my business - Some of her favorite organization hacks that's she's picked up over the years Even if you don't have anybody working for you right now, knowing about the dynamic with somebody who does take on an operations manager role can be insightful and helpful for the future!! Vijay Iyer joins Robin D.G. Kelley for a journey into Garner's 1965 trio album A Night At The Movies. Their conversation not only deconstructs that music, but it explores the deep connections between Vijay Iyer's own work as a musician and scholar, and the foundational elements of Garner's unique and undeniable artistry. A Night At The Movies is Garner's love letter to the films of his youth, and contains some of the finest studio recordings of his longest running trio with drummer Kelly Martin and bassist Eddie Calhoun.
