Whether you are designing a 100,000 sq. ft. mansion or a charming beach cottage, the principles of good design are always in play. On today's podcast, Paul McClean shares how he loves working with clients of all sizes to design a home that provides the backdrop to living a beautiful life. BACK STORY Paul McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is a licensed architect in multiple states. McClean grew up in Ireland, where he attended the Dublin Institute of Technology graduating with honors in architecture in 1994. During his time at the university, he traveled extensively and worked for award winning architectural practices in London, Dublin and Sydney, Australia. He also had the opportunity to work with the Monument Service of Ireland sketching and surveying many of the historic castles and monasteries dotted throughout the Irish landscape. In addition, he spent a year working with a firm in Dublin on museums and art galleries in the national capital. After graduation, he arrived in Southern California and worked for various local architectural firms before establishing McClean Design in 2000. McClean feels very fortunate these last few years and has managed to complete many new homes. He has always enjoyed working with different people and is constantly amazed by the different and varied backgrounds of his clients. He has been able to establish lasting relationships with high quality builders and other design professionals helping to ensure that his entire team is committed to realizing the dreams and aspirations of his clients. Design is more than a job to McClean. It is something he has wanted to do ever since he was a little boy and feels lucky enough to be able to practice today and hopefully for a long time! If you only choose one thing to focus on in 2025 let it be this: stop 'people pleasing' your clients! We're used to the adage that the customer is always right, but I'm here to tell you that to build a sustainable, successful business means not being at the complete beck and call of your clients. After years of hearing stories from fellow designers and my own experience, I've decided on a few approaches that help us avoid bending over backward for clients (which typically does more harm than good anyway)! Don't run around in circles making yourself crazy for your clients! In this episode, I share some advice, tips, and responses that you can use when establishing healthy boundaries with your clients ensuring that you always come across like the professional you are because you deserve to be in control of your business and as the expert to call the shots. The husband-and-wife team of Brooke and Steve Giannetti are nothing if not multitalented. He's architect, she's a designer, but together the two of them have done a little bit of everything: from opening a shop in small-town Tennessee to creating homes for A-List celebrities to caring for a menagerie of sheep, donkeys, goats and highland cattle on their farm, Patina Meadow. On this episode of the podcast, the Giannettis speak with host Dennis Scully about how working with animals informs both their lives and their business, how they keep clients excited over the course of a long project, and why designers should be curious about new technology—not fearful. This episode is sponsored by Loloi and Annie SelkeLINKSPatina Home & GardenDennis ScullyBusiness of Home
On today's episode of Architectette we are joined by Ming Thompson and Christina Cho Yoo, the founders of Atelier Cho Thompson (ACT), a New Haven and San Francisco based multidisciplinary practice working between architecture, interiors, graphics, and strategy. ACT's work frequently blurs the boundaries between typologies, as they draw inspiration from their work in schools, museums, offices, restaurants, and homes around the world. The firm has been awarded numerous national and regional design honors and has been featured in Metropolis, Architect Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, and at the Venice Architecture Biennale. We talk about: - The origin story of ACT and how Ming and Christina were inspired by a Parking Day collaboration to start their own firm to pursue projects that complemented their diverse sets of skills and passions. - Entrepreneurship and Motherhood: Ming and Christina talk about establishing a business while growing their families and how even though they themselves didn't take maternity leave, we talk about how each founder works hard to make sure their employees are able to do so. - The catalyst for expanding their San Francisco practice with an office in New Haven, CT. We talk about virtual collaboration, expanding in a new market, and how the firm was well-prepared for the hybrid shift that caught so many businesses off guard during the pandemic. - We end by discussing Ming and Christina's work to advance women and the AAPI community, their favorite projects, impactful pro bono work, public art installations, and how the firm has established and expanded their reputation for gorgeous, design-rich spaces Links: ACT's Website: www.chothompson.com Architectette Podcast Website: www.architectette.com Connect with the pod on LinkedIn, Instagram (@architectette), and TikTok (@architectette) Exclusive Content on our Newsletter: www.architectette.com Support the podcast on Patreon: https://patreon.com/Architectette?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_link Music by AlexGrohl from Pixabay.

Not only is he a renowned CMO and thought leader in marketing, but he's also a family man who's managed to strike an enviable balance between his professional and personal life. He's authored a couple of successful books and has over 45,000 LinkedIn followers, and Kyle stands out not just for his marketing brilliance but also for his down-to-earth insights on work-life balance. And his creativity for marketing (specifically merch drops) is one of the most memorable and impactful things he has brought to companies he has worked for.In this episode, we're diving into how to create swag that people actually want to wear (and buy), his “surprise and delight” brand philosophy, and the nitty-gritty of managing work-life balance (and/or guilt, to be honest). Workplace stress is something most of us will experience at some point. But there are some fields where the stakes are that much higher. The decisions made in a pinch by airline pilots, doctors, and others can literally be life or death.Switching from a well established and sometimes dull routine to immediate focus, clarity and understanding requires years of training and experience - and nowhere is that more true than in nuclear power. The vast majority of the time it's completely safe, but it's fair to say complacency and human decision making under stress has caused its fair share of disasters over the years. The art of keeping human clarity on point and enabling us to make decisions under stress with the help of technology (rather than it making the situation worse) is called Human-Centered Design. It's a principle which points us in the right direction and assists us when we need to make judgement calls - and is surprisingly uncommon in many industries. Joining us today is Dr. Claire Blackett, Principal Nuclear Research Scientist from the Institute for Energy Technologies and an expert in Human-Centered Design. We'll be discussing what other organizations can learn about alleviating stress and enabling good decision making through positive design principles - and more. This is Technology Now, a weekly show from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. God made it explicit that His intention for us from the beginning was for us to become His image-bearers - people who reflect His image to the rest of the world. He defined our destiny and placed it inside of us. His intention for us was that we discover our destiny before we built our lives. We need destiny to help keep us focused and help prevent us from being sidetracked.
There are times in this journey when we must make the decision to leave behind our old mindsets and ways of thinking and move forward with something new. We cannot continue to live parts of our lives in foreign kingdoms - ruled by addiction, depression and negative self-image. Sometimes we need a revolution which is about dying to the old and resurrecting something new. We must step out from under the authority and influence of sinful kingdoms and get established in God's Kingdom.
God had a great design for each of us personally and corporately. However, many Christians have never taken the time to seek God to learn of His plan or design for them, either personally or corporately. The moment we were born again, we not only walked into a relationship with Christ as our Savior, but we became called to identify with Him as our Lord. We are to build our lives on the Rock, the solid foundation. Christ is going to do something in you so that He can be seen in you.
God designed man to live from a place of dominion. Therefore, we must discover the purpose for each part of our construction so that we can fulfill God's strategy for our lives and live in Kingdom Consciousness. God always intended for man to elect to live in relationship with Him, and from this comes blessings. Because man was given this position, he was given the prerogative of choice. But with gifting comes responsibility.

In 2004, Carolyn and her husband co-founded CrossFields as a design-build firm in Atlanta, and in 2011 they changed their focus to improving the public's perception of alternative medicine, and highlighting the power of holistic healthcare. In an age that seems dominated by conflict, it's important that we step back and remind ourselves of our amazing capacity to work together. And there's perhaps no greater example of that than the modern city. From the smallest details to the large-scale infrastructure, every piece of a city was thought about, designed, and built by someone to make one large living thing we could all inhabit. When it all works well, it enables our society to work well, too. Roman Mars has spent his career chronicling these bits of human ingenuity that we so often take for granted—things like the utility codes, the curb cuts, the traffic signals, and much more. As host of the 99% Invisible Podcast and, with Kurt Kohlstedt, co-author of the book The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design, his work challenges all of us to look up and around, and to think about the how and the why of design around the world in a different way.
