Tread Perilously's month of reactionary PSA television continues with an ABC Afterschool Special called "The Day My Kid Went Punk." When dweeby band nerd Terry Warren gets a summer job as a day camp counselor at a mountain resort, he takes the opportunity to rethink his image. Trading in his terrible glasses for contacts, Hagger slacks for black jeans, and collared shirts for a ripped-up tee, he goes full Sid Vicious -- much to the displeasure of his employers and his parents. Will the Warrens assume he's doing this for no good reason or will they have a thoughtful discussion about going punk? Erik and Justin immediately get lost discussing some of their favorite punk and post-punk acts. Gene Simmons and Ace Frehly make special appearances. Justin notes the Big Lib energy in the special. Erik reveals when he was done with The Cure. Jay Underwood gets surprise praise even as memories of The Boy Who Could Fly leads to a tangent. A Stranger Things discussion also breaks out. Justin recounts the meeting of Nick Cave and Nicolas Cage. A brief Geography Corner ponders where the well-to-do part of the Valley was in The Karate Kid and Terry's fashion choices get critiqued.
Tread Perilously's Failed Pilots month continues with a look at the ABC television pilot for Tagteam. Pro wrestlers Rowdy Roddy Pipper and Jesse "The Body" Ventura star as thinly fictionalized versions of themselves ousted from the wrestling circuit and train as cops in the LAPD. Their training officer becomes their captain, their "bully" a black partner of sorts, and their first case may prove you sometimes need cops who can bodyslam crooks. But will their skills help them prevent special guest star Jennifer Runyon from getting killed before she can testify to a mob hit? Also, will the show attempt to make her a love interest for Roddy? Erik and Justin decline to attempt Jesse Ventura impressions, so Erik compensates by trotting out his Gene Simmons, Tommy Wiseau, Steven Segal and Ace Frehly. Justin admits to not being a big wrestling fan even as he extols the virtues of Roddy's on-screen charisma. Robin Curtis becomes the pair's favorite Savvik and Jennifer Runyon receives "show favorite" status. Erik tries to determine San Diego's prime cultural artifact and his wrestling persona. Paddy's Pub from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia makes a special cameo and Justin stumbles into a version of Cagney & Lacey starring Robin Curtis and Shannon Tweed.

It’s 1968. You've recently turned 17, you already have one son, and your first marriage is pretty much in the wind. You end up living in a band house and without any prior experience you become their drum tech, and in that instant your fate is sealed. You will go on to lead an incredible life full of chance, travel, respect, challenge, and music. Always music. After fifty years as a working and dedicated FOH engineer, Dansir McCullough still believes in the power of music, and the thrill it gives him night after night to stand at the center of it all, and push the faders up on over a hundred microphones. Dansir’s big break came with Ted Nugent, who he would mix for from 1976-1984. Prior to that he had been with Bob Seger, the Rockets, and the Tea. Since 1984 he has mixed for Patti Labelle, Aerosmith, John Waite, Ace Frehly, Alice Cooper, Gladys Knight, Billy Idol, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Opera Grand Rapids, and the Grand Rapids Ballet. For over eleven years he was the president of the Stage Hands Local #26 I.A.T.S.E.
Mike and Kelly continue their album review “music prisoner exchange” with Ace Frehly’s 1978 solo album. Kelly admits to be a recovering Kiss fan and that he shelled out money for all four Kiss solo albums to secure this wonderful piece of fine art.. There was agreement it was a very enjoyable album due to some great music and guitar work, but the lyrical content was a tad thin… and we don’t mean maybe. Mike mentioned a Lords of London version of the single off this album, “New York Groove”. And while Kelly couldn’t find that, he did stumble across … Continue reading →
Midnight Alibi frontman, James Oswald, talks their new album and meeting some of rock musics biggest legends: Billy Idol, Cheap Trick, and Ace Frehly from Kiss!
"Record with John Lennon." That was Alex's response when I asked him what the future holds for him. Thing is, if he had the chance, he would probably be the kind of producer Lennon would want. I've seen Alex in action in his studio Starr Ridge, in Brewster, NY., and he never stopped moving during the entire session. It was inspiring to say the least. In this episode, producer, engineer, composer, and mixer, Alex Salzman, shares his unique upbringing in Russia, and the incredible musical journey that has led him to work with the likes of Broadway composer Alan Menkin, Arlen Roth, Ace Frehly, and Sam Butler, to name a few.
