It's been a huge year for hardcore, with more eyes on the genre than ever, so much creativity happening without the genre, and a slew of amazing new records. To go along with our list of 20 great hardcore releases from 2022, I teamed with two of my current favorite music critics that have been covering the hell out of hardcore all year, Eli Enis (Revolver, Endless Scroll) and Hugo Reyes (who writes the hardcore column Step 2 Rhythm over at The Alternative and whose writing can also be found on his Medium), to discuss and debate the best hardcore releases of 2022 on the latest episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast. Each of us ran down our lists of our personal top five hardcore releases of the year, and we discussed a few other faves after that. We also dove into some "hardcore-adjacent" faves and debated a bit about what truly counts as hardcore. There were a few releases that all three of us had on our lists, but a good amount of differences between the lists too. Between the three of us, we touched on everything from the more melodic alt-rock-leaning stuff to different varieties of straightedge to thrashy NYHC to heavy rapcore and plenty of other stuff in between. If you like heavy hardcore, you likely know Troy-Core by sound, if not by name. This marginal scene in Upstate New York in the 1990s created some of the most unhinged, brutal, and heavy hardcore bands the impacts of which can be felt all the way to the current day – sometimes being referenced pretty directly by acts like Twitching Tongues and God's Hate. Anything this influential is worth exploring a little, especially when it's shrouded in mystery. We're joined today by former Upstate NY resident and avid Troy-Core enjoyer Eli Enis. Jackson and James talk about 2 films The Social Dilemma & The Great Hack. The Social Dilemma was released on Netflix Australia in August as is a documentary aimed at late high school which attempts to explain the economic underpinnings of free internet services like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Google. In explaining how these products make huge sums of money by making human behaviour the product to sell, The Social Dilemma touches lightly on the role this enormous market is playing to undermine democracy and human agency. The Great Hack (released last year) deals more closely with the political impacts of this technology and the economic logic it supports - exposing the role data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica played in manipulating voters via Facebook during the Brexit referendum and the 2016 US Presidential Election.

Restaurateur Jonah Freedman opened his eponymous Jewish deli, Freedman’s, in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood in late 2017, and folks have been kvelling over the decor, vibes and Chef Liz Johnson’s cooking. In a very short time, Freedman’s has earned a slew of accolades from the likes of the Los Angeles Times, Eater and Food & Wine, who tapped Liz for its 2018 “Best New Chefs” class. Liz and Jonah catch us up on all things happening at their deli in a strip mall. Brooklyn’s art rock, post-punk quintet, BODEGA, takes a break from their current tour to join us in-studio for a live performance. The band recently released their debut album, Endless Scroll. Most of the time, I navigate to my social media apps reflexively, as though my finger and the icons are magnets. I don't even realize I'm doing it until my thumb taps the Instagram icon on my screen. Again. And again. And again. It's a dirty digital habit, and it doesn't make me happy. Maybe you can relate. Studies have repeatedly found that while social media connects us to one another, it also makes us feel bad. And yet, we do it anyway. We do it because we can't stop.
