#281 - Ozzy Diary of a Madman Album Review

Metal Nerdery

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 2, 2025 85:55

DIARY OF A MADMAN, the 2nd album from OZZY OSBOURNE (and his band, BLIZZARD OF OZZ) is a perfect example of how an artist's follow-up album often eclipses their debut outing. With a heftier mix and heavier riffs, darker lyrical themes & eerie gothic metal elements, and of course the disturbingly graphic album artwork, DIARY represents a quantum leap forward for “The Prince Of Darkness”, combining each of the aforementioned components into one of the darkest and heaviest metal albums ever to have emerged from 1981. Get ready to “call the lawyers” and prepare to be bathed “in a huge spray…of light” from those who may engage in “different tax practices” than you're accustomed to. Prepare to bear witness to the quintessential heavy metal album that would leave an indelible mark on all metal subgenres that would follow it, grab your favorite “juice box”, and JOIN US as we flip through the pages of macabre madness and metal mayhem that dwell within the DIARY OF A MADMAN. We've already tackled Side One of our '86 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring MOP & RIB (“Puppets & Blood”), and now it's time to go through Side Two in order to reach our final verdict. As usual, there were difficult decisions to be made, and the deliberation was not easy, but we did it, and the only thing we can really say that will make any sense at all is that it's really hard to compare two such incomparable albums that are as equally incredible yet vastly unique as tacos and spaghetti.    Get ready to find out how “left-handed guitar picks” can impact your playing and discover the mythical metal legend known as “Ozzy Dio”. It's time to learn which song is “Slayer's Enter Sandman” and become more familiarized with some of the more commonly used “country sayings” in the South that may or may not also apply to “fruit flies”. In short, “don't be a fricker” and JOIN US for the nail-biting conclusion to our '86 DEATH MATCH featuring Side Two of MASTER OF PUPPETS & REIGN IN BLOOD.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. Part 3 of the discussion finds them finishing up the tracks on Side One and flipping the record over to start Side Two.  As usual, our hosts end up covering a wide variety of topics during their discussion. While talking about the first song, the author Raymond Chandler comes up, as does film noir.  When Brian and Sarah move on to the instrumental song that closes out Side One, the composer/conductor Gustav Mahler is brought into the discussion.  For the first song on Side Two, Brian and Sarah both find it relevant to mention Pete Burns of the group Dead or Alive. And Sarah even references an episode of the TV show Seinfeld!   Episode 163: Erasure - Chorus (1991) (Featuring Andrew Dineley of "Art on Your Sleeve") - Part 3 It's been a while since Part 2 of this discussion was released, but good things take time, right? So here at last, is the final installment of Brian, Sarah, and Art On Your Sleeve host Andrew Dineley's look back at Erasure's 1991 album, Chorus. In the previous episode, our hosts agreed to a time limit for discussing the tracks on Side One: ten minutes for an album track and fifteen minutes for a single. As the trio flips the record to Side Two, the timer for "Love to Hate You" is started, but when it goes off fifteen minutes later, they haven't even gotten around to mentioning the video! At that point, the hosts decide to do away with the time limits for the duration of the discussion-- which results in what's probably the longest-ever episode of the podcast! Side Two Discussion Brian, Sarah, and Andrew cover a lot of topics as they dive deeply into the five tracks on Side Two of Chorus. They find more songs that they feel could have been released as singles, more lyrics that are inspired by Andy's reaction to the Gulf War, and more excellent synthesized sounds from Vince. However, one of the sounds has the group wondering if Vince confused sirens with walruses? Love to Hate You Turn the Love to Anger Siren Song Perfect Stranger Home Extra Credit The trio agree that this period of time was especially prolific for Vince and Andy. Not only were the pop duo cranking out albums and EPs at an impressive pace, but they were also recording numerous B-sides for their single releases. For extra credit, Brian, Sarah and Andrew each pick a favorite B-side from Chorus to discuss briefly. Final Reviews and Ratings After the extra credit discussion, our hosts turn their attention back to the album proper, to provide their final reviews and record-adapter ratings of Erasure's fifth studio album. Brian has mentioned throughout the discussion that he was not the biggest fan of Chorus when it was first released, but has since come around to liking it a lot more. Sarah says she's enjoyed the album the entire time it's been a part of her life, and Andrew feels similarly. So which one of the three hosts will give it the lowest rating-- and how close will Chorus get to achieving a perfect score of 100 record adapters? The answers are revealed in this section! This book is based on true stories that the author experienced. He recounted his suffering and pain to reveal the true nature of the human mind. In regard to his experiences, the author took into consideration the psychological statement that man's mind is divided into a conscious and unconscious part. Every good thing is of the conscious part which just occupies a small percentage of the mind whereas the unconscious part dominates a person's daily activities. As you read the stories, you will begin to understand why the author chose the title “The man on the right side”. His best friend became his worst enemy. In his arguments, the author wonders if he will ever trust another man's word. It is the general believe that man thinks from one side of his brain. Most of the time, he is led by his unconscious mind. When he sees the negative outcome of his actions, he regrets it. The man, Suah Kollie, you are going to meet in the stories, is of no exception.

Episode 148: A-ha - Scoundrel Days (1986) Part 3.75 PLUS The Giddy Carousel of Pop No, your eyes aren't deceiving you-- this is, in fact, a new installment of the discussion on Scoundrel Days! Of course, your eyes probably also noticed that this is Part 3.75, rather than part 4. Slowly but surely, Brian and Sarah are getting through this album, but once again, they're only discussing one song off the album.  The song in question is Track Two on Side Two, "We're Looking for the Whales." Our hosts talk about the origins of the song and actually end up spending a fair amount of time discussing a demo version and comparing it to the album version. They both also express confusion with the lyrics, as well surprise in learning how recently, and by whom, this song was performed live. However, this episode has more than just a discussion of a single album track from a-ha, because finally, the mysterious project Brian and Sarah have been mentioning over the past couple of months is revealed! Our hosts are joined in this episode by Simon Galloway and Gavin Hogg, hosts of the brilliant podcast The Giddy Carousel of Pop. Simon and Gavin were gracious enough to invite Sarah and Brian on their show to discuss an issue of the much-beloved Smash Hits magazine, and in the ensuing discussion we learn more about the episode they recorded, as well as the podcast itself and its hosts. The lively conversation also includes recaps of recent concerts by Soft Cell and Roxy Music, as well as mentions of such diverse acts as David Bowie, The Mission (much to Sarah's chagrin), Sigue Sigue Sputnik (yes, really!), and a mysterious synthpop duo from 1986 who in this episode are compared to...The Velvet Underground?! Brian and Sarah also chat with Gavin about the hot-off-the-press book he co-authored with Hamish Ironside, We Peaked at Paper: An Oral History of British Zines. Episode 146 : A-ha - Scoundrel Days (1986)  Part 3.5 Our hosts have had a busy summer this year, and with their annual vacation imminent, they didn't want to get too far behind in their discussion of Scoundrel Days. So for the second time in the show's history, Brian and Sarah are releasing a "Part 3.5" of an album retrospective, where they discuss a single song off an album. The last time they did this was for Queen's The Miracle, for the album track "Rain Must Fall." This time, it's for "Cry Wolf," the second single from a-ha's sophomore effort, Scoundrel Days. "Cry Wolf" kicks off Side Two of the album, and part of this episode's conversation once again brings up the concept of "the perfect pop album" and how Scoundrel Days is faring so far in the quest for that title, especially when comparing Side One and Side Two. And since "Cry Wolf" was a single, Brian and Sarah also talk about release and chart history, and they share several reviews. Of course, there's also a video for "Cry Wolf," and that's where things get interesting. Brian announces he has watched the video numerous times in an apparently futile attempt to understand its plot. He breaks down his interpretation scene by scene, which amuses, delights, and sometimes confuses Sarah. He ends with a plea to the listeners to share their thoughts and ideas on what the video is about-- and of course, you can use any of the methods listed below to do so. For Sarah's sake, please help by contributing your theories, so Brian will have someone else to talk with about the video! One of the most common questions I get about leadership is this: Are leaders born, or made? It is the common "nature versus nurture" question, which we will be going through in today's podcast.  So in any good debate, you need to hear both sides. Side One: leaders are born, Side Two leaders are made. We'll look at data from sport (do big feet mean you'll be a good swimmer?), twin studies (if leaders are born, are identical twins with 100% of the same genes both good leaders/bad leaders?) are extroverts good leaders (and introverts a weak second), and data business psychology (what percentage can be learnt?). It's a data rich episode, but as always, I finish with a tip for you to level up your leadership 1%, starting today. LinksGoing from Solo to CEO?
