Covers officially come off TOCA Junior Championship at exclusive launch eventThe Mairon Freight UK TOCA Junior Championship officially launched this evening (13 August) with the covers coming off the car that will power young drivers in the brand-new series from 2025 – the Chevron B1417.As part of an exclusive event at the Mercure Daventry Court Hotel, the rear-wheel-drive machine took centre stage in front of almost 125 invited guests including those prospective teams and drivers, championship partners, suppliers and media. Attendees not only had the opportunity to get a first-look at the car, but they were also provided with further insight into the series as it prepares to take its place on the support bill of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) next year. Hosted by Alan Hyde, guests first heard from BTCC Chief Executive Alan Gow before Tommy Watson, the Chief Executive of title sponsors Mairon Freight UK, took to the microphone. Cham-pionship Director Dave Beecroft and Operations Director Vickie MacClinton then took to the stage before formerly revealing the car. The event was the culmination of almost two years hard work and marked the birthplace of a category that is set to develop and prove talent between the ages of 14 to 17 for many years to come. Putting safety first The Chevron B1417 has been designed and built from the ground up as an entry-level machine that has safety at the core of its ethos, allowing young drivers to make the transition from karting to cars as seamlessly as possible. Built to the highest FIA standards and regulations, the car's chassis boasts a number of indus-try-leading features, one of which is the Roll Over Protection System that has been designed in accordance with the latest FIA Homologation Regulations for Safety Cages including utilising a 16mm main hoop.Side-impact panelling has also been built into the chassis while the driver's door is filled with en-ergy-absorbing materials; both of which increase the structural integrity of the car and dissipate the force of impacts. Significant safety features continue inside the cockpit with every car being fitted with a Corbeau ARS-6 (AS.090.21) seat homologated to FIA 8862-2009 standard. The seat is used in conjunction with a six-point harness and FIA 8863-2013 Racing Net; a vital component that protects drivers by preventing debris from entering the cockpit and safeguarding them in a collision.Inspired by the BTCC, the Chevron chassis also boasts front and rear removable subframes for easy maintenance and repairability, while aerodynamics come in the shape of a front splitter and adjustable rear wing.Other key features include adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars and sealed two-way suspen-sion dampers with controlled springing. Adjustable functionality has also been built into the steer-ing position and the brake, throttle and clutch pedals. Weighing approximately 850kg, the car is powered by a custom built four-cylinder naturally aspi-rated 1898cc engine. Serving as a stepping-stone to professional motorsport, championship competitors will have the benefit of utilising that power through a five-speed manual gearbox and a limited slip differential, both of which will be sealed. The series will use Goodyear Direzza Race tyres, with restrictions being placed on the number of tyres that are allocated at each event to ensure parity and to also contain costs. To view the full specification of the Chevron B1417, click here.Chevron name returns to the trackAt the heart of the TOCA Junior Championship is the triumphant return of Chevron Cars to the modern racing scene.Founded by the late Derek Bennett in 1965, the British manufacturer was once a motorsport powerhouse as it went from humble beginnings in Bolton to enjoying worldwide success acros
Retirement, often considered a period of late-life decline, can actually be a time of cognitive growth and prosperity. When we retire, all the neurologically stimulating aspects of our working life — the mental and physical challenges, socializing and strategizing with colleagues, etc. — can disappear overnight. An abrupt lifestyle change of this magnitude can be taxing for our brains, but with the right preparation, our twilight years can truly be the best of our lives. In this episode of ‘Your Brain On…', we discuss: • The neurological impacts of retirement • What we can learn from how different cultures approach retirement • How building our cognitive reserve can protect our brains as we age • The future of research into the neuroscience of retirement • Why minority populations often disproportionately struggle with retirement We're joined by FOUR experts in the field of cognitive aging: DR. YAAKOV STERN: professor of neuropsychology at Columbia University, and a pioneer of the concept of cognitive reserve DR. AMANDA SONNEGA: Research Scientist at the University of Michigan DR. SHERVIN ASSARI: Director of Research, Public Health at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science DR. ALAN GOW: head of The Ageing Lab at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neuroscientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. Drs. We're talking to James Courtney on this week's double episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast polished by Bowden's Own. We cover plenty of ground across a two-part chat touching on many facets of his career. In Part 1, he talks about his regular ‘story time' with his Tickford teammates where they hit him up for tales from his days racing overseas - some of which he shares with us! He also talks about the influence of longtime manager Alan Gow - including a fax he sent to him back in the day - his missed opportunity to do Bathurst with Peter Brock, his 2010 championship season, the fallout and his move to the Holden Racing Team for 2011. He also talks about his decision to switch his focus to racing in Australia and reveals a couple of other enduro opportunities that preceded his 2005 Supercars debut… Learn more about Bowden's Own here >> https://www.bowdensown.com.au/ V8 Sleuth Superstore: https://superstore.v8sleuth.com.au/
We're talking to John Cleland on this week's episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast. In the first part of a two-part chat, John talks about how he got into the sport in the first place and the deal he cut with his car dealer dad to go racing, watching his hero Jim Clark debut the iconic Lotus 49 and Ford Cosworth DFV at the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix and what it means to him to have his name alongside Clark's on the British Touring Car Championship trophy. He also talks about how his long relationship with Vauxhall and General Motors first came about, the cheeky bit of gamesmanship that helped him win the 1989 BTCC, how he feels nowadays about that controversial 1992 title decider, which of his BTCC rivals was the most fun to wind up and the time BTCC chief Alan Gow squared him up for a prank. John also talks about seeing the clear benefits of motorsport to the brands his car dealership sold, the ex-Peter Brock car that he now owns, and why he retired from racing full-time at the end of 1999. The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship is primed and ready for another memorable year after officially launching its 2021 season at Silverstone today (April 22), announcing a capacity 29-car entry list. After an unprecedented yet entertaining 2020 campaign, which ended with Ashley Sutton clinching the Drivers' crown for a second time, Britain's premier motorsport series is set to return with a bumper grid and to its traditional ten round, 30-race format.Kicking the season off behind closed doors at Thruxton next month, the series will then head to Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Knockhill before making a second visit to Thruxton. Visits to Croft, Silverstone and Donington Park will follow before the traditional finale at back at Brands Hatch in late October.Donning the mantel of defending champion and running the famed number one on his Infiniti Q50, Sutton sticks with Laser Tools Racing for the new season as he bids to retain his titles in both the overall championship and Independents'. Aiden Moffat and Carl Boardley will partner Sutton at the rear-wheel-drive squad.West Surrey Racing and Team BMW proved to be the closest challengers to Sutton last year and the reigning Teams' & Manufacturer champions have swelled to three cars once again with Colin Turkington, Tom Oliphant and Stephen Jelley tasked with piloting the 330i M Sport to glory. It is an all-new line-up at Halfords Racing with Cataclean however with Dan Cammish returning to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and Matt Neal taking a step back from driving duties. Whilst one three-time champion steps back, another returns in the shape of Gordon Shedden as the Scotsman rejoins Team Dynamics to partner Daniel Rowbottom.Another driver to make a popular return to this grid after a year on the sidelines is Jason Plato. Electing to sit out 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the double champion is back at Power Maxed Car Care Racing in the Vauxhall Astra and gunning to tally his 100th victory in the series. Daniel Lloyd, a race-winner in the BTCC, gets a full-time drive to partner Plato.Toyota Gazoo Racing UK steps up its BTCC programme this year as it expands to two cars. Rory Butcher fills the void left by Tom Ingram in the Speedworks Motorsport-run Corolla and he is joined by Sam Smelt, who last competed in the series in 2018.Ingram's departure from Toyota sparked a frenzy during the off-season and the former Independents' champion has found a new home at Excelr8 Trade Price Cars. Armed with the Hyundai i30N, Ingram has his tail in the air and is hungry for success. He's joined at the four-strong squad by Chris Smiley, Jack Butel and former British GT champion Rick Parfitt Jnr.Elsewhere, Ciceley Motorsport have acquired the services of Tom Chilton to partner Adam Morgan and they have parted ways with the Mercedes Benz A-Class. In its place are a pair of West Surrey Racing-built BMW 330i M Sport's and hopes are high for the Car Gods-backed outfit.BTC Racing are another to have high hopes for the season ahead and with good reason as Josh Cook has remained with the team to drive their Honda Civic Type R. Michael Crees, Jack sears Trophy champion last year, has also inked a new deal to stay whilst Jade Edwards will get a full-season after debuting at Silverstone in 2020.Motorbase Performance and MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square are another two teams to have joined forces over the winter to field a quartet of Ford Focus', and they will run as Manufacturer/Construtors entrants. Sam Osborne and Andy Neate will run out of the Motorbase side of the garage whilst Jake Hill and Ollie Jackson will do the same for MB Motorsport.

It's all very well being told that the best way to stave off ageing is to do, think, eat or behave in a certain way when you're young, but when you are young, you don't ever believe you're going to get old, so by the time you are getting old it's too late. You've frittered away you're entire youth partying, denying your body sleep and exercise and eating junk food so by the time you're 40, you look 50 and feel 60, aaaaaagh! But is it really too late? Is there something we could, should, might do in middle age to hold back the tidal wave of old age? Welcome to The Intervention Factory - an on-going Scottish research project, designed by Associate Professor from Heriot Watt, Dr Alan Gow, aimed at understanding which ordinary, everyday actions and behaviours could be the key to helping us stay sharper for longer. In this Brainwaves, Pennie Latin listens in to Alan's Edinburgh Fringe Show at the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas based on our cognitive decline and then explores the a piece of research called the What Keeps You Sharp survey which explores how accurate our own ideas are about what does and doesn't keep us younger for longer.

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship Series Director, Alan Gow, has been speaking with the series' official website regarding all things BTCC, as he discusses the season so far, the rude health of the championship and how he would ideally like to reduce the grid size to 26 cars in the future. In a fascinating interview, Gow also talks about the unpredictability of the racing and the ‘changing of the guard' at the front of the field. The legendary BTCC boss regards the driver quality to be the best of the century, but there are a number of reasons why he feels the current 32-car grid capacity leaves Britain's biggest championship ‘bursting at the seams'.
It's Valentines' Day this week ... and if you have romance in mind ... would you consider using Coaching Cards For Couples to enhance your relationship? Gillian Russell speaks to Kim Morgan, Managing Director of Barefoot Coaching, to find out why she created the cards and what she hopes couples will get out of them. Producer Lauren and her fiance Duncan took a pack of cards home and put them to the test - but will they still be smiling at the end of it?! It's a buzz phrase in business and in the sporting world but what exactly is Growth Mindset? Dr John Paul Fitzpatrick, Director of Teachmindset, talks about the work he's been doing in schools across Scotland to try and instill the principles of growth mindset (a love of learning, resilience and effort) ... and explains just how the rest of us can apply it in our everyday lives too. Staff and pupils from Hillhead Academy in Glasgow share their experiences of using growth mindset, both within school and in the outside world. Alan Gow, Associate Professor of Psychology at Heriot Watt University, describes the research he's doing into the impact different activities might have on our thinking skills as we age ... and explains how the rest of us can get involved in the project.

[[:encoded, "With such close and competitive racing in the BTCC and the support championships there are invariably racing accidents as drivers fight for every position. We were delighted with the performance of the SAFEGENIUS unit as it makes the track completely clean and safe following an incident as all the liquid was removed from the Tarmac. The quick operation also meant there are no delays to the jam-packed race programme, ensuring the fans didn't miss a single minute of the action.nnThe use in the BTCC of this bespoke system is a first for British motorsport and is perfectly suited to motor racing. I'm also very proud that the BTCC is, yet again, at the forefront in providing a safer and more efficient motorsport environment.nnThe system works by using patented mechanical suction technology, and unlike vacuums, can be used to clean-up combustible liquids from the road surface. Once the road is free of harmful liquids, the carriageway is washed and returned to its original state."]]
