We're talking to John Cleland on this week's episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast. In the first part of a two-part chat, John talks about how he got into the sport in the first place and the deal he cut with his car dealer dad to go racing, watching his hero Jim Clark debut the iconic Lotus 49 and Ford Cosworth DFV at the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix and what it means to him to have his name alongside Clark's on the British Touring Car Championship trophy. He also talks about how his long relationship with Vauxhall and General Motors first came about, the cheeky bit of gamesmanship that helped him win the 1989 BTCC, how he feels nowadays about that controversial 1992 title decider, which of his BTCC rivals was the most fun to wind up and the time BTCC chief Alan Gow squared him up for a prank. John also talks about seeing the clear benefits of motorsport to the brands his car dealership sold, the ex-Peter Brock car that he now owns, and why he retired from racing full-time at the end of 1999. He's one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula 1. Sir Jackie Stewart became World Champion in 1969, 1971 and 1973. 50 years since he retired after that final title, Sir Jackie is still in the top 10 for all-time F1 race wins - with 27 victories to his name. He started out with the BRM team in 1965, before joining Tyrell Racing three years later. They enjoyed five years of success, in which Jackie cemented his status as a legend of the sport. The Flying Scot, as he was also known, tells Tom Clarkson that winning was all that mattered. But for all the highs, there were also dreadful lows. Formula 1 was an extremely dangerous sport in Jackie's era. Three of his close friends were killed in F1 races – Piers Courage, Jochen Rindt and his Tyrrell teammate, Francois Cevert. Jackie explains how he became almost desensitised to death and how he removed all emotion from his racing to succeed. The hectic lifestyle of a Formula 1 World Champion eventually caught up with Jackie and proved to be a huge factor in his decision to retire. Much of his life after F1 was dedicated to improving the safety of the sport and many of the changes to protect the drivers today are thanks to him. Jackie opens up about the relationship with his wife, Helen, and sons, Paul and Mark. He reveals why he didn't stop racing as Roger Williamson lost his life at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1973, and why Formula 1 still means so much to him now. Max Verstappen took a record 14th win in a single F1 season with a consummate victory in Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and George Russell. But with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc looking out of sorts all weekend and finishing a full minute behind Verstappen, will alarm bells be ringing at Maranello?Joining Michael Butterworth to discuss the key issues from the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend is Dieter Rencken, Editorial Director of RacingNews365.Away from the racetrack, it was finally revealed earlier in the week that Red Bull would be hit with a $7 million fine and 10 percent reduction in aerodynamic testing time for next year, after having breached F1's budget cap by some $1.8 million last year. With other teams complaining the sanction is too lenient, and Christian Horner calling it ‘Draconian', what effect will this have on Red Bull's competitiveness next year, and is the punishment severe enough to dissuade other teams from doing likewise?Meanwhile, Red Bull and Max Verstappen elected not to give any interviews to Sky Sports over the Mexico weekend, after being made aware that reporter Ted Kravitz had implied that Lewis Hamilton was ‘robbed' of the 2021 World Championship. This comes after Ferrari had refused to speak to Sky at the Dutch Grand Prix, and Guenther Steiner has not spoken to Sky's German affiliate for several races. With several voices indicating their displeasure with Sky, is it time for the broadcaster to change its approach? And with several drivers voicing their concern at the growing number of people in the F1 paddock, is it time for attendance to be capped? All this and much more on this edition of the RacingNews365.com F1 podcast!

He's a Zandvoort ‘beach boy', who became a local hero in F1. Racing in the Dutch Grand Prix was a dream come true for Jan Lammers, but he struggled to show his speed in Formula 1 and dropped out of the sport after 4 difficult seasons. He was always determined to return to motorsport's pinnacle and waited a record 10 years for his chance. Jan tells Tom Clarkson about his rise from junior European champion to F1, the impact impatience had on his career, how bad luck repeatedly ruined his best chances of a life changing F1 result, and how a change in attitude and focus on learning helped him take Le Mans victory in 1988 and return to F1 after his decade away. Today, Jan is Sporting Director of his hometown racetrack, Zandvoort, and is working to make the Dutch Grand Prix a spectacular and sustainable event. We explain how Alpine got it so wrong with its Oscar Piastri deal in the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast. Scott Mitchell-Malm joins Edd Straw to discuss the Contract Recognition Board ruling that Piastri had a valid contract to race for McLaren in 2023 and '24 and not Alpine, which was the big talking point in the Dutch Grand Prix paddock on the first day of practice at Zandvoort. The timeline of the deals, and how that intertwines with McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo being told his services were no longer required, is laid out - particularly with regards to the revelation that Piastri's contract was signed as long ago as July 4. We also discuss Alpine's likely choice as team-mate to Esteban Ocon having missed out on both Fernando Alonso and Piastri, and what it means for the rest of the F1 driver market.
