Driving the BMW iX3 M-Sport SUV today – the more affordable electric version ofits best-selling mid-size X3 range, introduced earlier this year at $89,100. Nicelyspecified despite being nearly $16,000 more affordable to the top spec iX3 M-Sport Pro. So how does it drive. Featuring a 80kWh battery powering a210kW/400Nm single electric motor driving the rear wheels only via a singlespeed transmission. A very rewarding EV with a slight hum in a very wellinsulated and torsionally stiff body giving it a classy edge – I found I was usingenergy consumption on average around 18kWhours per 100 kilometres not quiteachieving BMW’s stated range of 460kms but not far off. Charging time on my11kW home charger ran to around 7/12 hours overnight but with the ability to takea 150kW charge rate BMW suggesting a 10-80 percent charge could be as quickas 34 minutes. A good level of safety technology but disappointingly lacking rearcross traffic alert. But as a rear drive only surprisingly nimble and with BMW’swheel slip control system and adaptive suspension very controlled irrespective ofroad surface. Talking BMW today, the best-selling German luxury brand after displacing Mercedes-Benz as the top luxury import last year. BMW has had a good degree of success with its EV range, and I recently drove the iX3 M-Sport SUV, the electric version of its best-selling mid-size X3 SUV, introduced earlier this year at $89,100, joining the more expensive iX3 M-Sport Pro. The iX3 M-Sport not as well equipped as its Pro stablemate but on first impression nicely packaged retaining the same powertrain – utilising an 80kWh battery to power a 210kW/400Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels only through a single speed transmission – offering a driving range of up to 460kms. The iX3 M-Sport features some nice M- Sport touches like high-gloss roof rails, M leather steering wheel and illuminated door finishes with BMW M inscription, leather trim and a panoramic glass sunroof. Only real give-away to the dearer Pro model is smaller 19-inch alloy wheels and the lack of a head up instrument display. The interior packaging first class, great seats, plus a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and same size infotainment screen, the latter very intuitive. But, just a space saver spare wheel. El fin de semana pasado tuvimos un Rally de Cerdeña con un formato algo más reducido que, una vez más, no dejó indiferente a nadie. Así que pudimos disfrutar por las mañanas de esa prueba extrema. Y por la tarde, el domingo, tuvimos la Indy en el circuito urbano de Detroit, de todo lo que en ambos puntos del planeta sucedió nos hablan en el segundo programa de la semana del Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1. Cerdeña se decide en el último momento. Como decimos, esta edición de Rally de Cerdeña se ha disputado con un formato un poco más reducido. Algo que, como siempre, tiene sus pros y sus contras. Parecería que últimamente, a la FIA, le gustan mucho los experimentos. Por otra parte, en cuanto al espectáculo, aparte del entorno y la dureza, la propia prueba dio muchas sorpresas. Todo parecía que estaba decidido del lado de Ogier, que ganaría el Rally por 5ª vez en su carrera, pero en el power stage perdió el rally por dos décimas de segundo con Tänak. Un pinchazo le hizo perder un tiempo precioso, que acabó dando la prueba al estonio. El Mundial de Rallies es para estar ahí. Y nunca defrauda, aunque no tengamos el espectáculo del año pasado. La prueba, al final, como decimos, se la llevó Tänak, seguido de Ogier y de Dani Sordo. Evans no termina de cuajar con tanta presión y terminó 4º. Neuville, que tuvo un problema el sábado y se vio obligado a abandonar, sacó petróleo del Super Domingo y terminó primero, sumando unos valiosos puntos. Así que el Mundial de Pilotos sigue liderado por el belga de Hyundai, seguido por su compañero, Ott Tänak y de Evans, de Toyota, empatados a puntos (104 para cada uno frente a los 122 del líder). Y en el Mundial de Constructores, Toyota sufre: Hyundai lidera con 269 puntos y Toyota se queda a 13 puntos (256). M-Sport queda muy detrás, con 131 puntos. Detroit: horroroso circuito urbano y horroroso espectáculo. En la Indy tuvimos carrera en el horroroso circuito urbano de Detroit, donde adelantar es una quimera. Si a eso añadimos el optimismo y la falta de profesionalidad de muchos, nos encontramos con que la carrera fue una simple lotería. ¿Me llevan por delante y se acabó todo a pesar de ser rápido y no haber cometido ningún error? Ésta fue la única cuestión a dirimir. Al final, al que menos golpes le dieron o, por lo menos, no se los dieron en la parte final del GP fue quien se llevó la victoria, Scott Dixon. Newgarden le reventó la carrera a Palou al final, y adiós a una victoria que estuvo acariciando durante toda la prueba. Si en el primer programa de la semana del Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1 se hablaba de lo que pasó en Hungría, que tampoco fue tanto, y las impresiones que causaron los equipos, en este segundo nos preparamos para el GP de Bélgica, uno de los más queridos por los aficionados y que este año adelanta un mes su fecha de celebración. Pero también se hablará de otros dos eventos disputados el fin de semana pasado, la IndyCar en Iowa, con dos carreras, y el Rally de Estonia, que dieron mucho más espectáculo y de más calidad que la F1. Dos carreras y un único vencedor. Lo que vivimos el fin de semana pasado en Iowa en la Indy, en un oval de poco más de 1,4 km y donde tuvimos dos carreras, sí que fue un espectáculo. La segunda carrera fue de las que te tiene pegado a la pantalla del televisor sin poder moverte y acabas gritando como un loco, escandalizando a todo el vecindario. Menuda segunda carrera de Palou para acabar 3º que dejó a todos con la boca abierta, y que le sigue manteniendo en una muy buena posición para llevarse el Campeonato (90 puntos por delante del 2º, Newgarden). Era impensable lo que vimos, qué listo él y qué buenos son en Ganassi con la estrategia Doble victoria de Newgarden, que demuestra lo bien que se le dan los ovales y que le ha dado un buen chute de energía para encarar el final de temporada, luchando y dando espectáculo. Rovanperä vence su prueba favorita. Kalle Rovanperä dio una cátedra memorable en Estonia, prueba que ha confesado que es su favorita. Fue un Rally rapidísimo, precioso, espectacular, donde lo peor fue ver que Tänak penalizaba 5 minutos por cambiar el motor incluso antes de comenzar la prueba. Una pena porque está claro que hubiera sido una lucha de titanes, como ya lo fue el año pasado, entre él y el vigente Campeón. En dos semanas, en cualquier caso, los vemos luchando en casa de Rovanperä, en Finlandia, Rally que el año pasado se llevó Tänak para Hyundai y que este año intentará llevarse para M-Sport. Spa-Franchorchamps y carrera sprint. El circuito belga de Spa-Franchorchamps, donde se disputa este fin de semana el GP de Bélgica, es el circuito más largo de Campeonato y está considerada como una de las pistas más completas de calendario, por tener curvas y rectas de todas las formas y longitudes posibles, además de ser la que tiene más variación en la elevación. Este año acoge dos carreras, pues este fin de semana volvemos al formato de carrera corta el sábado, así que sólo habrá una sesión de entrenamientos. Además, se prevé lluvia durante el fin de semana, lo que esperamos que nos de mucho espectáculo. Si queremos disfrutar de este último GP antes del parón veraniego tendremos que estar disponibles el viernes para los entrenamientos, a las 13:30h, y para la clasificación, a las 17:00h. El sábado se dedica todo al formato Sprint: Sprint Shoutout a las 12:00h y carrera de 100km a las 16:30h. El domingo, como de costumbre, la carrera empezará a las 15;00h. En resumen, este fin de semana tendremos Fórmula 1, en un gran circuito, y después la Fórmula 1 se va de vacaciones, pero en agosto tendremos más motor y, si seguimos como hasta ahora, de más calidad. Segundo episodio de la semana en el Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1. Seguimos hablando del GP de España, con análisis a fondo de todo lo sucedido en la carrera. Pero no sólo eso: también habrá tiempo de hablar del Rally de Cerdeña (y qué está fallando en el WRC a nivel de espectáculo) y de la IndyCar en Detroit: ¿qué tienen que aprender otras competiciones de esta apasionante categoría? Gran Premio de España: una carrera poco vistosa. La primera parte del programa estará dedicada a hablar de todo lo sucedido en la carrera, pero… con análisis a lo que estuvo bien (poco), regular y lo que no gustó nada. La realidad es que la clasificación y la amenaza de lluvia auguraban una diversión que nunca llegó. WRC: primera victoria de Abiteboul con Hyundai. El Rally de Cerdeña, por su parte, fue una montaña rusa, como siempre. Victoria de Neuville y la primera de Ciril Abiteboul a los mandos del equipo. Además, con doblete. Rally espectacular, pero que ha dejado muchas polémicas. Hay muchas cosas que cambiar en el WRC, se veían venir, y esta prueba ha dejado muchas miserias de la categoría al aire. Quizás fuera preciso cambiar el orden de salida los viernes porque, la verdad, Rovanperä no tuvo la más mínima oportunidad en este Rally. Por otra parte, el domingo hay muchas horas de espera y sólo cuenta el Power Stage, lo que hace que los demás tramos sea un trámite - debido a que hay que conservar gomas. Y, por qué no decirlo, quizás haya que replantearse la construcción de estos coches, que pasan por un charco y se rompen. La victoria se la llevó Neuville, seguido de Lappi, que se ha adaptado muy bien a su nuevo equipo. Y en tercer lugar, Rovanperä, que se llevó el Power Stage y mantiene el liderato de la categoría. Ogier, que tuvo un pinchazo y luego un error que le dejó fuera de la prueba, cae así hasta la 5ª posición del Mundial, que, como decimos, sigue liderado por Rovanperä, seguido de Neuville, Tänak y Evans. En cuanto al mundial de constructores, Toyota se mantiene en cabeza con 235 puntos, seguido de Hyundai, con 212, y de M-Sport, con 148 puntos. Próxima parada, uno de nuestros favoritos: el Rally Safari en Kenia, del 22 al 25 de junio. La Indy (comandada por Palou) da un soberbio espectáculo en Detroit. Al otro lado del charco las cosas fueron muy diferentes. La Indy llegaba a un circuito urbano, el de Detroit, estrecho y muy feo, eso sí (además nuevo, que no es el de años anteriores). Sin embargo, la carrera fue trepidante y puro espectáculo. Al que de verdad sea un enfermo del MotorSport le encantaría y, sobre todo, saborearía con gusto otra victoria muy dominadora de Palou, quien no venció sin lucha: tuvo que luchar contra los elementos, las amarillas y hasta problemas técnicos. Nada parecido a lo de Verstappen. Aquí también ha habido polémica por el circuito, y se analiza en este episodio. Como decimos, la victoria se la llevó Palou, seguido de Will Power, Rosenqvist, Dixon, Rossi, Kirkwood, McLaughlin, Armstrong, Ericsson y Newgarden. O’Ward tuvo que abandonar. Y tras esa incontestable victoria, el español se afianza más en el liderato de la categoría: 273 puntos frente a los 222 del segundo (Ericsson). O’Ward, tras sus dos últimas carreras con abandono cae hasta la 5ª posición del Campeonato. La siguiente carrera, el 18 de junio, en un circuito impresionante: Road America. Kenneth Paul Block, conocido por todos como Ken Block, falleció el 2 de enero de este año 2023. Dedicó toda su vida a hacer verdaderas locuras, especialmente en coche. Fue un verdadero acróbata, un hombre espectáculo…. Hemos querido hacerle un homenaje a través de 10 de sus coches más increíbles… ¡Va por ti Ken! Me alucinaba lo que era capaz de hace Ken y aunque en general admiro mucho más a los grandes pilotos, me parece que Ken era muy, pero que muy especial. Especial porque sus vídeos estaban muy por encima de todo lo que habíamos visto hasta entonces. Y luego, se atrevió a participar nada menos que en algunas pruebas del Mundial de Rallyes. Fue una sorpresa para todos. Muchos lo criticaron y se burlaron de sus resultados. Pero consiguió que otros, entre los que me encuentro, le ganásemos respeto. 1. Audi S1 Hoonitron. El nombre completo de este coche, largo, es Audi S1 e-tron Quattro Hoonitrom. Se publicitó como la primera exhibición que iba a hacer Ken con un coche 100x100 eléctrico… 2. Ford Bronco (1974). Siempre que se habla de los coches de Ken te imaginas coches pintados muy llamativos y con adhesivos de sus patrocinadores. No es el caso de este Bronco, sin duda uno de los vehículos menos conocidos de Ken Block es este impresionante Bronco. 3. Ford Escort MK2 RS (1978). Ken lo utilizó en 2015 y fue el primer vehículo de exhibición con solo propulsión trasera. Su motor es atmosférico de 2,5 litros y casi 350 CV. Ken lo utilizó en el Rally de Nueva York, pero sobre todo en programas y videos de “drifting”. 4. Ford Fiesta ST RX43 (2015). Esta unidad nació en 2013 como coche de rallycross. Lo preparó M-Sport, contaba con 600 CV y aceleraba de 0 a 100 en 2 segundos. Debutó en la sexta entrega de sus Gymkhanas. 5. Ford Focus RS RX #43 (2016). Otro coche nacido para el Rallycross y fruto de la colaboración entre Ford Performance, Hoonigan Racing y M-Sport. Su motor turboalimentado de cuatro cilindros y 2,0 litros, logra 600 CV. 6. Ford F-150 Hoonitruck. Además, la Gymkhana 10, muy rutera, me parece de las más espectaculares. Y es que este pick up F-150 de 1977 lleva un motor Ecoboost V6 turboalimentado de 925 CV. Está lleno de buenos detalles: Sofisticada tracción total y una carrocería de aluminio hecha a mano… 7. Ford F-150 RaptorTRAX. En 2013 Ken nos sorprendió con este "Con todos vosotros, RaptorTRAX "que cambiaba las ruedas de todoterreno por unas orugas. Lleva un motor V8, sobrealimentado por un compresor volumétrico, de 6,2 litros y 600 CV. 8. Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR. Un coche clásico con mucho estilo, como un Mustang del 65, pero con caballos, ¡muchos caballos! Debutó en 2016 con un motor V8 biturbo de 845 CV… ¿te parecen pocos? A mí no, pero a Ken sí, por eso hubo una segunda versión con la potencia subida a ¡1.400 CV! Ahora seguro que no les parecen pocos a nadie. 9. Porsche 911 Hoonipigasus. Tuvo bastante fama el Porsche 917/20 "Pink Pig" que participó en Le Mans en 1971 pintado de rosa. Este coche rinde homenaje al “Cerdo rosa”. Sí, es un 911, pero con motor central, de solo 1.000 kg de peso y un motor 4 litros biturbo de 1.400 CV… Los “culpables” con la empresa SVRSR, BBi Autosport y Hoonigan Racing Division. 10. Subaru WRX STI. Este coche tiene el honor de ser el primero que Ken Block usó en su primer vídeo de Gymkhana allá por 2006. Un Subaru de 565 CV y tan solo 1.258 kilos preparado por Vermont SportsCar. Compitió con él en varios rallyes y en la Gumball 3000, pero realmente este coche se hizo famoso en el vídeo de exhibición… el primero de muchos. Conclusión. Este mundo necesita personas como Ken Block. Conocemos sus participaciones en pruebas y exhibiciones de skate, snowboard, motocross, rallyes, Gymkhanas… fue el creador de Hoonigan Racing Division, cofundador de la marca de zapatillas de deporte DC Shoes y lo mejor de todo: ¿Has visto alguna foto suya en donde no esté sonriendo? Tendrá un buen relevo en algunas de sus actividades de la mano de su amigo Travis Pastrana. Porque insisto: Este Mundo necesita personas como Ken Block… Coche del día. Primero digo el coche y luego el motivo. El coche del día de hoy es el Opel Monza 3.0 vendido entre 1978 y 1986. El motivo, para mí fue una auténtica “máquina de derrapar”. Imagínate la “Tormenta perfecta”: Un Máximo Sant con 24 añitos, una pista deslizante solo para mí, un fotógrafo para inmortalizar el momento y un coche con propulsión trasera, eje rígido, autoblocantes y 180 CV… Y os preguntareis, ¿dónde están esas fotos? Pues no lo sé porque eran tan bestias que aparte de llevarme una bronca del director, desaparecieron y tuvimos que hacer una sesión más “polite”…

Si en el primer episodio de la semana del Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1 se hablaba del Rally de Montecarlo, con datos y números, en este segundo programa hay tiempo para profundizar aún más en otros aspectos de la primera prueba del WRC. Y no sólo eso, pues en el otro lado del charco, este fin de semana pasado, tuvimos la clasificación de las 24 Horas de Daytona. Estrenos, rendimientos y problemas. En el primer programa de la semana se habló de Ogier y Rovanperä, pero en este segundo toca analizar el rendimiento, por ejemplo, de Tänak, en su estreno con M-Sport, al que vuelve después de haber pasado por Toyota y por Hyundai. Pero también habrá tiempo de comentar las actuaciones de Loubet, de Evans, de Katsuta. En cuanto a las actuaciones de Sordo y Lappi, que también se comentarán, quedaron un poco ensombrecidas por los problemas de Hyundai. Y es que las diferencias de rendimiento entre los distintos equipos también serán un tema más que interesante a comentar. Para acabar con el resumen del primer rally de la temporada del WRC, por supuesto, habrá que hablar de las gomas y de la selección hecha, así como los problemas que se dieron. Nos preparamos para las 24 Horas de Daytona. Como decíamos al principio, el fin de semana pasado pudimos disfrutar de la clasificación para las 24 Horas de Daytona, que se llevó Honda (Acura), aunque las cosas están más que apretadas. Este fin de semana se augura una carrera realmente divertida y peleada. Para ir bien preparados, y este año que hay “Inter-competencia” con Le Mans, toca hablar un poco de lo ocurrido y de lo que podemos esperar, empezando por hacer un buen repaso a los resultados de la clasificación. Los chicos del Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1 nos contarán qué les parecieron estos nuevos coches, ya en pista y la opinión que les merece que Acura (es decir, Honda) sea el equipo que se ha llevado la Pole, frente al resto de Hypercars, que también estarán en el WEC o, como mínimo, en Le Mans. Para finalizar, nos contarán qué nos espera este fin de emana en Daytona, qué hay que destacar en la previa a esta brutal carrera. Fin de semana de Rally espectacular, con el estreno del Mundial de Rallys en Montecarlo. Desde el Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1 se analiza una prueba donde, aunque faltaron la nieve y el hielo, a cambio tuvimos una prueba rapidísima, espectacular en cuanto lo visual de los tramos y, sobre todo, con dos días de especiales de noche, que los aficionados disfrutan muchísimo. Récords históricos y espectáculos visuales. Los aficionados a los rallys han podido disfrutar, este fin de semana, no sólo de la locura de ver pasar tan rápido a los Rally 1 por una pistas tan estrechas y complicadas. Más aún, han asistido al momento histórico en el que Ogier suma 9 Montecarlos, una gesta de locos considerando las dificultades de esta prueba. Está claro de que el resto de pilotos tiene suerte de que este genio haya decidido estar “sólo” en algunas pruebas.
