Will screenlife movies become the found footage of the next generation? Though there have been some noticeable outliers, the genre has not really taken off with audiences. But what if you do one that is also a creature feature plus has family drama. We also review an uncomfortable psychological thriller starring Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow. This year Blake watched the Oscars while Nathaniel could care less about them. We talk about Demi Moore not winning for The Substance, Quentin Tarantino's amazing casting track record, and record long speeches. The Ready or Not sequel has added a notable name to its cast. Are we ready for it?There is something about screenlife movies that just does not work for us. Host was great and Dashcam was fun, but they usually end up being more frustrating than anything else. Bloat was no different as the filmmaking took us out of it on a number of levels. We could not even imagine why it was done in this style to being with.If the movie were shot in a more traditional style it probably would have been better, but that does not mean it would have been good. The writing is awful presenting the audience with characters that are shallow at best. There is no payoff for the monster and the ending is downright confusing. Maybe we should stick to found footage. The Rule of Jenny Pen was discomforting for different reasons. When you have Rush and Lithgow leading the way, you now acting is not going to be a problem. The atmosphere is a bleak one that only gets darker as the plot progresses. Before long, things have escalated to levels that are almost impossible to watch. But you do not want to look away. That is what makes it such a great film. It is touch to watch and filled with a sense of sadness and hopelessness. It also has two compelling leads and a riveting story. The Rule of Jenny Pen will is an unforgettable watch - for better and for worse. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. The words of Bob Dylan's song, "the times they are a-changin'" are coming true as coal mines & coal fired power stations are being decommissioned at end of useful life and as energy markets and policies change. Nationally and locally, our community faces challenges to shape the future of jobs and the economy.  Lithgow locals have a petition calling for Government to take back and use the idle Lithgow Loco Workshop - 1/4 to 1/3 of Lithgow's industrial land. The workshops are ideal for retrofitting freight trains for a hybrid electric future, providing many trade jobs for Lithgow and the Mountains in a very short time. Speaker Steve Murphy said, "if you think of regions like Collie in WA, or the Hunter Valley just up the road, if we think about Gladstone, or the La Trobe Valley, and even just down the road here [at Mount Piper] the power stations, is the closure dates are up on the walls, and workers are watching the clock tick down for those closure dates." "The piece of the puzzle that is missing is the opening date of the factories for the workers to train, to transfer to to know that their economic and their financial security is going to be looked after. In this episode of Longevity by Design, hosts Ashley Reaver, MS, RD, CSSD, and Dr. Gil Blander sit down with Dr. Gordon Lithgow, a Professor and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. Dr. Lithgow's research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of aging and identifying genes and small molecules that can prolong lifespan. With a background in genetics from the University of Glasgow and extensive experience in biotechnology and aging research, Dr. Lithgow shares his journey from growing up in Scotland to leading a lab at the Buck Institute.Dr. Lithgow discusses the compelling nature of aging as a profound biological mystery, which drew him into the field. He highlights his lab's approach of following curiosity-driven research, often using the nematode worm C. elegans as a model organism due to its short lifespan and genetic similarities to humans. This unbiased method has led to significant discoveries, including genetic mutations and drug-like molecules that extend lifespan. The conversation also covers the concept of geroscience, which Dr. Lithgow helped coin, emphasizing the link between aging and chronic diseases. A major focus of Dr. Lithgow's work is studying protein homeostasis, which declines with age. Protein misfolding is implicated in many age-related diseases; that discovery moved the lab's focus from lifespan extension to efforts to understand drivers of healthspan and the causes of age-related chronic diseases, in particular Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. His work also includes the influence of environmental factors, such as mild heat stress, and dietary iron, vitamin D, and alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) on aging. Dr. Lithgow's interdisciplinary collaborations aim to uncover new interventions to extend healthspan and longevity.Dr. Gordon Lithgow is also the host of Buck Institute for Research on Aging's podcast, "We're not getting any younger... yet" on which he speaks with some of the brightest scientific stars on the planet to search for—and actually find answers to—questions on aging. The podcast can be found at https://www.buckinstitute.org/podcasts/ and on podcast apps.Episode timestampsIntroduction: 00:00-02:42What led Dr. Gordon Lithgow to become a scientist and research the biology of aging?: 02:43-06:20Why are worms (C.-elegans) a good model for studying aging?: 06:21-07:55Why did Dr. Gordon Lithgow transition from research investigating ways for extending lifespan to extending healthspan?: 07:56-09:24What specific diseases is Dr. Gordon Lithgow researching?: 09:25-12:01What does protein shape mean for aging?: 12:02-13:12How does mild heat stress impact health and aging?: 13:13-16:35How does vitamin D and alpha-ketoglutarate impact aging, healthspan, and lifespan?: 16:36-25:26How does dietary iron impact aging, healthspan, and lifespan?: 25:27-29:57Are there more genes and proteins to be discovered that influence aging, or have they all been discovered?: 29:58-34:12What compound do you think has the most potential for extending healthspan and lifespan?: 34:13-35:54What is the impact of calorie restriction and exercise on healthspan and lifespan in humans?: 35:55-38:51What is the importance of clinical trials for aging research?: 38:52-42:09What are the future directions of Dr. Gordon Lithgow's research?: 42:10-43:38Dr. Gordon Lithgow's top tip for living better longer?: 43:39-48:50

In this cosmic voyage of an episode, Stuart and Jacob traverse the starry expanse of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and its sequel "2010: The Year We Make Contact" directed by Peter Hyams. From the dawn of man to the birth of a new star, they delve into the evolution of a genre-defining classic and its less-celebrated successor. How does the enigmatic and visually stunning original compare to the more conventional narrative of the follow-up? And can the sequel's Cold War backdrop and additional characters stand up to the original's sparse and contemplative storytelling? Also in this episode are talks on the merits of long movie runtimes, ruminations on the initial episode of the Fallout television series, Jacob's memories of Lithgow and a dolphin, and a debate as to the purpose of the monoliths. The 1993 action-adventure film "Cliffhanger," directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, and Janine Turner, is an adrenaline-pumping ride that combines breathtaking scenery with heart-stopping action sequences. Set against the rugged backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, "Cliffhanger" not only showcases Stallone's physical prowess but also delves into themes of redemption, survival, and the human spirit's resilience against nature's formidable challenges. The plot of "Cliffhanger" is straightforward yet compelling. Stallone plays Gabe Walker, a mountain rescue climber who is haunted by a failed rescue mission that resulted in the death of a friend's girlfriend. The event drives a wedge between him and his fellow climber Hal Tucker (played by Michael Rooker), and Gabe leaves the mountain rescue team, vowing never to return. However, fate has other plans, and he is drawn back to the mountains when a group of criminals, led by the ruthless Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), lose their loot across the peaks during a heist gone wrong. Gabe becomes embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse as he tries to thwart their plan and survive the treacherous mountain terrain. What sets "Cliffhanger" apart from other action films of its time is its masterful use of the natural environment as both a breathtaking backdrop and a formidable antagonist. The cinematography, by Alex Thomson, captures the majestic beauty and inherent danger of the Rocky Mountains, providing a stunning canvas for the film's high-octane action sequences. These sequences, including death-defying stunts and edge-of-your-seat climbs, are executed with precision and realism, making "Cliffhanger" a standout film in the action genre.Stallone delivers a nuanced performance as Gabe Walker, blending physicality with vulnerability. His portrayal of a man battling his own demons while fighting to survive and save others adds depth to the film's narrative. John Lithgow's performance as the villainous Eric Qualen is equally compelling. Lithgow brings a cold, calculating intelligence to his role, making him a formidable adversary for Stallone's character. The supporting cast, including Janine Turner as Jessie Deighan, Gabe's former girlfriend, and Michael Rooker as Hal Tucker, contribute significantly to the film's emotional weight. Their performances add layers to the story, highlighting themes of forgiveness, loyalty, and the bonds formed through shared adversity."Cliffhanger" also benefits from a well-crafted script that balances action with character development. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing is tight, ensuring that the film maintains its momentum while allowing for moments of character introspection. The score, composed by Trevor Jones, complements the film's epic scope, enhancing both the suspenseful and emotional moments. However, no film is without its flaws. Some critics have pointed out the implausibility of certain stunts and the occasional reliance on action movie clichés. Despite these criticisms, "Cliffhanger" remains a beloved classic in the action genre, praised for its innovation, execution, and ability to engage and thrill audiences. In conclusion, "Cliffhanger" stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of action films that combine compelling storytelling with breathtaking visuals and heart-pounding action. Its success can be attributed to a talented cast, a skilled director, and a production team that pushed the boundaries of what was possible in action cinema. Nearly three decades later, "Cliffhanger" continues to captivate audiences, offering a thrilling cinematic experience that celebrates the indomitable human spirit's struggle against the forces of nature and evil. It's a film that not only entertains but also inspires, reminding us of the power of redemption and the strength found in facing our fears. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

It's Die Hard on a mountain!  Hang on tight as Phil and Liam grapple with CLIFFHANGER (1993), aided by a very special guest: Jamelle Bouie, columnist for the New York Times Opinion section and the host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast. After the botched mid-air heist of a US treasury plane results in a violent plane crash, mountain rescue worker Gabe Walker is coerced into helping the ruthless thieves (led by a maniacal John Lithgow) find the missing loot, amidst the forbidding landscape of the Colorado Rockies. Michael Rooker, Janine Turner, Rex Linn, Leon and Craig Fairbrass round out the supporting cast of this spectacularly shot action extravaganza, which was expertly helmed by Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin (director of Die Hard 2). After three flops in a row, Cliffhanger marked a return to form (and the action genre) for Stallone. The guys discuss their feelings about this action icon, and where this character fits in the pantheon of Stallone's other roles, in films such as the Rambo franchise, the Rocky franchise, Demolition Man, CopLand (and Judge Dredd). They also discuss director Renny Harlin's horror roots, and his penchant for cinematic sadism (Jamelle is particularly partial to a stalactite-related death). Lithgow's wild, Hans Gruber-inspired performance (and questionable “English” accent) also provide plenty of meat for the guys to chew over, and there's a significant amount of affection reserved for the work of character actors Rex Linn, Vyto Ruginis and Bruce McGill, which leads to a lengthy sidebar on the films of Michael Mann and Spike Lee. Janine Turner is also lauded, but the resolution of her role highlights the problem that many male directors had in successfully serving strong female characters in this era of action cinema. The ‘Die Hard Oscars' continue to provide fun and frivolity, and this week Liam and Jamelle decide to collaborate for a challenging edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz, which unearths some fascinating casting concepts!  CLIFFHANGER TRAILER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZALfW1ohRI At the time of release, CLIFFHANGER is streaming on Netflix and Sling and is available to rent or buy through Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, RedBox, Vudu, DirectTV and all the usual platforms.
