This is the Bathurst 1000 episode where we discuss all the hot topics after the 1000km rain soaked running of the 2025 great race. We also discuss NASCAR from Las Vegas and NHRA from the Texas Motorplex. While we are at it we also discuss the Spring Nationals from The Bend in South Australia.
Matt Payne has become King of the Mountain in a wet weather shemozzle at the Bathurst 1000. He has joined the high-octane New Zealand pantheon of Jim and Steven Richards, Greg Murphy, Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin. The 23-year-old and his co-driver Garth Tander climbed from 18th to take the title in minimal visibility, sneaking into the lead for the first time when James Golding and Cooper Murray collided with a couple of laps remaining. Golding crossed the line first but was handed a five-second penalty for the incident. Payne told Mike Hosking being in the cockpit was pretty hard work. “There was a couple of times where, where all I was thinking was just actually trying to stay on the road.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Petrolheads are flocking to Bathurst for the biggest weekend in Australasian motorsport. The Bathurst 1000 kicks off this weekend over the ditch in Australia. Few people know the race better than 4-time winner Greg Murphy, who claimed the victory in 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2004. The race is reliant on luck, a million tiny factors the difference between winning and losing, Murphy telling Piney there's so many things that can go wrong. “You've got to try and dot a lot of I's and cross a lot of T's, and when one of those things isn't quite right, you're not going to win the race.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The greatest spectacle in racing? Nope, that's the Indy 500. The race that stops a nation? Nah, that's the Melbourne Cup. The great race? Yeah, that's it – the Bathurst 1000. The magnificence of the mountain is back. The 1000km Supercar squirt around Mt Panorama just outside the NSW town of Bathurst gets its rev counter red-lining tomorrow afternoon just before 2. Six hours of man and machine savaging the circuit, originally built as a sedate mountain drive for tourists. This will sound a bit a bit geeky, so be it. A constant source of fascination for me is the astonishing propinquity of the lap times across the field. Consider this. Qualifying yesterday threw up this: over one lap, 6.213 kilometres, the first six cars were separated by one tenth of a second. Brodie Kostecki's provisional pole position time was 0.0064 of a second quicker than the number 2 placed driver Broc Feeney. Six and four-tenths of a thousandth of a second. Over 6.2 kilometres. Different cars. Different teams. Different set ups. Different lines. Different drivers. Separated by essentially a click of the fingers. Get on your phone and try to start and stop your stopwatch to the same nth. I'd hazard a guess you can't. It's insane. It amplifies the how the teams wring every last millisecond of performance out of the equipment, the track, the driver, and they can't really be split. Then they do it for over six hours through rain and shine, tyre wear, equipment failure, and the odd errant marsupial. Mental. It's all the fun of the circus, or a leisurely drive in the country, which was what the road was built for.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Bathurst 1000 returns this weekend. The first practice has seen New Zealanders Ryan Wood, Matt Payne, and Andre Heimgartner sit first, fourth and eighth respectively. Brodie Kostecki is the current champion, looking to obtain back-to-back victories. Former Supercars driver Paul Radisch told Mike Hosking at the end of the day, everything just comes down to luck. He says that even if you're leading the race and make all the right preparations, someone else could still claim the win. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Question of the Day: What is your childhood trauma food, that turned you off forever? We all have one - where you had to sit at the table until it was all gone! Bathurst is on the way, so we chat to Riana Crehan, part of the Channel 7 Supercars coverage. Can Brock Feeney get it done this year? Liam had a funny moment when coaching his daughter’s U9 soccer team. Every year, a sleepy New South Wales town gets turned into a pit lane paradise as 150,000 fans descend on Mount Panorama for the Bathurst 1000 — Australia's most iconic car race. But Bathurst isn't just about lap times and burnout smoke. Behind the wheelspin lies a deep and chaotic history: from the deadly results of some races, to the Peter Brock legacy, to the legendary Holden vs Ford rivalry that turned race day into a full-blown cultural war. This episode, Holly and Matthew take a drive through the history of the Bathurst 1000 — the triumphs, the tragedies, the questionable crowd behaviour — and how this race became one of the most defining events in Australian sporting history.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weird-crap-in-australia--2968350/support.
Welcome to our motorsports podcast where we discuss F1, IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, our own racing adventures, and some other adventures!NASCAR had it's final race of the Round of 12 where Larson took the win at the Charlotte Roval after a great move for the lead at the newly configured hairpin turn. We will note that for one great pass that was made it seemed that there were 3-4 terribly executed passes that resulted in one car taking out another one....rubbin is racing apparently.IMSA capped its season off with Petit Le Mans which had a dramatic final two hours and even more so dramatic moment with 5 minutes to go where the leading Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac nearly completed an entire lap with NO headlights! The car was having an issue where its headlights were flickering on/off intermittently but luckily they stayed on long enough for the race stewards to give them the okay to continue. A pit stop that late in the race to fix the issue surely would have costed them the win. GTD Pro also had some championship drama as the Heart of Racing Aston Martin finished one place lower than they needed to in order to take the championship over the AO Racing Porsche which had a mechanical issue of it's own that set it back 5 laps down to the GTD Pro leaders.Supercars had their Great Race! The Bathurst 1000! And a great race it was as there was only 3 cautions that happened during the entire race. Great job by everyone to get the cars to the finish.Coming up this weekend: NASCAR is at Las Vegas for it's first race of three in the Round of 8. Formula One returns from it's Fall break with a race at COTA in Texas.
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood dominated the 2024 Bathurst 1000 in the #1 Chiko Camaro. Kostecki was back to his brilliant best, and Hazelwood was the best of the co-drivers. Red Bull Ampol Racing filled the minor spots on the podium in the fastest ever Bathurst 1000, with only one Safety Car at a convenient, for some, 29 laps from home - or one full tank of fuel. Plenty of other stuff went down too. We have a little bit of other news in #NASCAR and #Sprintcars and the change to our shareholders list, with Betty Klimenko coming on board as an equal partner to Bruce and Andrew. Kiwi driver Matt Payne has claimed provisional pole after the qualifying race for the Bathurst 1000. Motorsport Journalist Simon Chapman joined Piney to discuss everything that went down during the qualifiers, and who might find themselves on the top of the podium after the Big Race. “Oh, it's absolute bedlam, really.
