Long time listeners know that I am a connoisseur of the sequential arts.    It is truly the theater of the mind because I can co-create with the artist to experience an environment or an adventure.   I bring this up because sometimes healing can come from unexpected places. Like a graphic novel or a comic book.    Three of the books talk about the experience of having a perpetual negative voice interfering with the quality of their lives.    Three of the books speak to what they have done to connect with their better selves.    In this episode a look at five graphic novels memoires about anxiety. What if everything you saw negatively came into being. As if it was an overly to every single thing you laid eyes on.   For example, you are looking into an ice cream case and see rocky road kill or cookies & clams.   The Last Gay Man on Earth is a photo memoir that has Ype Driessen. All I know is that there is a sentient robot vacuum cleaner involved. The publisher is Street Noise Books.    Also on the Andrews McMeel website is a book by Debbie Tung, Everything is Ok. But it isn't because we are talking about anxiety and depression. This week, we present the Fierce Reads Nonfiction Panel, a discussion of the various forms of nonfiction writing with five authors who work in the genre. In order of appearance, the writers are Achut Deng and Keely Hutton, Alex Graudins, Ashley Woodfolk, and Jessica Vitkus. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME About the panelists: ACHUT DENG was born in South Sudan and came to America as a refugee when she was sixteen years old, a story she recounts in her memoir, Don't Look Back: A Memoir of War, Survival, and My Journey from Sudan to America. She is now an American citizen and works in human resources at a meat-packing plant in South Dakota, where she also resides. She is the mother of three sons. KEELY HUTTON is a children's book author and former English teacher. She worked closely with Ricky Richard Anywar to tell his story in her debut novel, Soldier Boy. Booklist named Soldier Boy one of the top ten first novels in 2017 and one of the top ten historical novels for youth in 2018. Her second novel, Secret Soldiers, was a 2020 Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year and 2020 Children's Book Council Notable Social Studies Book for Young People. Keely lives in Rochester, NY with her husband, two sons, and adorable dog, Maximus. Hutton assisted Deng in the writing of Don't Look Back. ALEX GRAUDINS is the cartoonist behind Science Comics: The Brain and History Comics: The Great Chicago Fire. Currently hiding out in li'l Rhode Island, she holds a BFA in Cartooning from the School of Visual Arts and has done work for sites like The Nib and CollegeHumor. She has a penchant for memoirs and narratives that tackle the topics of anxiety and friendship. Her most recent title is the graphic memoir Improve: How I Discovered Improv and Conquered Social Anxiety. ASHLEY WOODFOLK has loved reading and writing for as long as she can remember. She graduated from Rutgers University and worked in children's book publishing for over a decade. Now a full-time mom and writer, Ashley lives in a sunny Brooklyn apartment with her cute husband, her cuter dog, and the cutest baby in the world. Krosoczka's Hey, Kiddo: How I Lost My Mother, Found My Father, and Dealt with Family Addiction, a YA comics memoir, published by Scholastic's Graphix imprint. To introduce Woollcott and Graudins' The Brain, Gwen and Krystal talk about non-fiction, informational comics for young readers, bringing up other volumes in the Science Comics series, such as M.K. Reed and Joe Flood's Dinosaurs, as well as Maris Wicks' Human Body Theater, and Gene Luen Yang and Mike Holmes' Secret Coders. Gwen explains that all of these texts place scientific or mathematical information within a fictional frame, and she summarizes the basic premise of The Brain, which places two sisters, Fahama and Nour, in a setting that is reminiscent of wacky 1960s and 1970s monster films or TV shows like The Munsters. Krystal praises Woollcott and Graundin's use of a diverse cast, both in terms of the principal characters and of the individuals who appear in illustrations of the way that the brain impacts human functioning. Both Krystal and Gwen detail some of the memorable spreads in the comic and view the text as an excellent story and reference book for young readers. Next, the two PhDs move on to a young adult graphic memoir, Jarrett J. Krosoczka's Hey, Kiddo, which is already earning critical acclaim and award buzz (it is a National Book Award finalist). Krosoczka is well-known as the author of nearly a dozen picture books and of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series, but Hey, Kiddo is his first YA offering. Gwen recommends Krosoczka's 2012 TED Talk “How a boy became an artist,” as well as his 2014 TED Talk on the Lunch Ladycomics. Both provide insight into Krosoczka's childhood influences and artistic choices. Krystal then gives a detailed description of the way Hey, Kiddo mirrors -- and expands upon -- many of the artist-focused coming of age narratives that have been popular in recent decades, including Alison Bechdel's Fun Home: A Family Tragicomedy (2006) and Özge Samanci's Dare to Disappoint: Growing Up in Turkey (2015).  Krystal also applauds Krosoczka's use of line style and color in commenting on memory, and Gwen testifies to the author's ability to evoke a convincing depiction of 1970s New England. Both reviewers love this text and highly recommend it for teens and adults. The Young Readers series will be on hiatus in December, but Gwen and Krystal will be back in January with a look at some of the YA graphic novel highlights of 2018.

Time for an ARBITRARY! This time, we are playing a super indie game called DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS FIFTH EDITION! I heard the team worked very hard on it. It went through Beta Tests for the longest time. It's very good, I hope it becomes popular, and I hope you heard it here for the first time! ANYWAY, we are playing a module called... The scene opens. A single spotlight on stage revealing a man with both of his hands covering his face, head sagged down, and his elbows on his knees. He weeps softly at first, then the sobs become more intense. The woeful mourning sobs echo throughout the theater. Then the sobs turn to laughter, hysterical laughter that bounces through the halls and out the abandoned facilities doors. He stands, screaming "What have I done!" into the stale air. He then sits. I am this man. And this, is some weird ass tangent that a DM, namely THIS DM, SHOULD NOT HAVE WENT DOWN, BUT APPARENTLY ITS A THING? Start of the Second Leg, I don't think that we have seasons technically, but all in all, this would be considered "season 2" of Cody's (my) DMing? After what happened last time, you'd think there'd be something dramatic, but unfortuanately no? Crystal Light seems to be a god now, wonder how that will go.
