Derek and Laurel are back, and on the eve of 2021 ending and 2022 beginning they look back on the last year and ask about how living life as new parents in a pandemic challenged, changed, and evolved their relationship to contemporary story telling. As The Midnight Myth gets close to two years since having attending a movie in a theater, what themes connect the experience of interacting with media in a pandemic environment? What narratives drew us in and how did we grow as individuals, a family and a podcast? We discuss supporting local theater, the evolution of the MCU as it jumps into streaming television, and how the prospective of the pandemic permeates into our view of narratives… from Don't Look Up, too Hawkeye, Ted Lasso, Midnight Mass, Morning Show, Mythic Quest, Loki, and so much more! — Support us at www.patreon.com/midnightmyth Check out our merch store for Midnight Myth, Boomerangerang, and Wheel of Ka tees and totes! It's our Not About The Weather 2021 retrospective, and we are going all-in with our biggest pop culture hype and gripe of the year. Ariana, Brittany, Natalie and Karen are all here to decompress. Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest are both heavily featured, with a shout out to Dickinson as well. No, we are not shills for Apple, yes we will become so if ever they want us to be. That platform is creating a lot of great work right now. Ariana takes us through her hype regarding this year's wonderful coming of age portrayals for teenage girls, and Brittany rekindles her long-lost experience with live music. In terms of gripes, we have a powerful and wide ranging slate of things to complain about. Brittany is concerned that America's sweetheart Steve Kornacki is being used and abused as a gimmick (Let Steve Be Steve!) and Karen is disappointed by the Melissa McCarthy movie Thunder Force, which should have been brilliant but just... wasn't. Natalie feels that while the final season of Brooklyn 99 was, in many ways, very meaningful and very conscious, it betrayed Jake Peralta at the close, and Ariana simply feels that the way people engage in fandom just isn't fun any more. As well as our year-end hypes and gripes, the group reflects on their experience of 2021 at work and at home, and assesses whether this year was, at the end of the day, a good or bad one for them personally. Results are mixed. And a great Question of the Day sparks a fantastic discussion about all the performers who shone for us this year like never before. Be sure to stay tuned for the post credits addition. ("Nooooooooowen Wilson.") Welcome to a special episode of the Asian Hustle Network Podcast! We are very excited to have Christopher Naoki Lee on this week's show. We believe that each person has a message and a unique story from their entrepreneurial journey that they can share with all of us. Check us out on Anchor, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play Music, TuneIn, Spotify, and more. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave us a positive 5-star review. This is our opportunity to use the voices of the Asian community and share these incredible stories with the world. We release a new episode every Wednesday, so stay tuned! Christopher Naoki Lee is a Los Angeles native, with a BFA in theater from New York University, and has been working in the industry for nearly 25 years, recently wrapping up a season-long arc as Ken Uehara on the critically acclaimed AMC series, The Terror. He's recurred on Amazon's Too Old To Die Young and Jean Claude Van Johnson, Apple TV+'s Mythic Quest, among others. Chris has written and directed digital series to pilots, but his feature film directorial debut, Dinner Party, is far more personal. He wanted to tell the story of a group of diverse friends, not dissimilar to his experience, that has to grapple with the changing of their current times, where issues of race, gender equality, classism have come to the forefront of the modern conversation. His aim for this film is to help facilitate that dialogue even further, showing that there is always more than one side to a story and that we can become a beacon of positive change if we so choose to be. As a person of color, it's an honor for Chris Naoki Lee to depict such a diverse ensemble on screen with these incredible collaborators on Dinner Party. It truly takes a village. Please check out our Patreon at @asianhustlenetwork. We want AHN to continue to be meaningful and give back to the Asian community. If you enjoy our podcast and would like to contribute to our future, we hope you'll consider becoming a patron. How Watching 50s & 60s SciFi Flims Became a Comfort for Library Assistant Jared Miller: Casa Grande AZ

Join Christian Jones and Regan Bell with their guest, Jared Miller, as they chat about the world of science fiction, particularly in film. Jared is a library assistant at a public library. In his free time, he watches science fiction movies of the 50s and 60s as a pastime. Today, he talks about his fascination with science fiction films in the 50s and 60s and events of that period which greatly influenced them. There's a lot to take away from this episode, so make sure to tune in and enjoy the show!   A Product of Its Time Cheap effects, weird-looking, and plainly old – that is what most people would describe science fiction movies from the 50s and 60s. But for Jared, these come with the complete package. The social, cultural, and political motives that influenced these films made Jared fascinated with them. After World War 2, American science fiction films boomed their way into popularity which paved the way to the ones at present. The 1950s was the golden age of science fiction. Jared was also amazed at the art form applied to the movies. Practical effects were the only technology available at that time, yet the intention behind and the arduous production process fueled his obsession. The movies also reflect society and show a visual representation of what people thought of the future. An artist's imagination of how the world would look and the technology they believe would be possible is what Jared loves about these movies. While there are issues represented in these films that are now unacceptable, Jared reminds us that these are products of the time. It only shows how the times have changed, including what people believe in.   About Jared Miller: Jared Miller lived in Pensacola for 13 years, where he attended middle school and high school. Currently, he is a library assistant at a local downtown library in Casa Grande, Arizona. When Jared is not arranging the shelves at the library, he is time traveling 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and warring with the worlds on The Day the Earth Stood Still in the 1950s and 60s science fiction films. For Extended Show Notes Visit www.fantasticpeoplepod.com    Outline of the Episode: [02:44] What took Jared away from the old Gulf Coast, and what he does for a living [06:42] Jared's obsession with science fiction movies of the 50s and 60s [08:02] UFOs as the subject that influenced the popularity of the genre in the 80s [11:06] The connection between science fiction and the birth of cult films [12:50] Appreciation despite its cheap-looking appearance due to lack of technology [19:33] Mythic Quest episode that described science fiction's influence on a person [24:44] The comfort Jared found in the 50s and 60s sci-fi movies [26:57] Fascination with artist interpretations of retro-futurism and space travel [30:01] Look back to the originals and how CGI lost the magic of stop motion [33:01] What makes Jared come back to these movies aside from the art form? [37:10] Constructive criticisms for the fan community of the 50s and 60s sci-fi movies [40:03] What the future holds for these films from a production and viewer standpoint   Resources   Get Raw, Unedited Episodes, from FANtastic People, Access To Our Discord Channel and Submit Questions for Upcoming Guests: https://fantasticpeoplepod.supercast.tech/ Connect with The FANtastic People Podcast! This week, we take a look at the first two seasons of Mythic Quest on Apple TV. The show can be spoiled so be warned that we are going to be spoil the shit out of it. The show follows a bunch of people involved in the production of Mythic Quest, a MMORPG that looks quite a bit like World of Warcraft. It’s a workplace comedy so it can be a bit formulaic but we enjoyed it because of the interesting character arcs. And don’t worry – we give you enough backstory to understand what’s going on!

We'll also be talking about the end of Randy's patience with the Emmy's and the end of Les and Randy's patience with Adult Swim's dumb streaming rules that make it impossible for them to talk Rick & Morty this week with Kyle and Nick.
