We discuss the end of the traditional Republican Party and the reality of the new Party of Trump. Exhibit one is that every Wisconsin Republican House of Representative member voted to shut down the federal government rather than full their constitutional duties to maintain the full faith and credit of the U.S. Also, we are witnessing the inevitable end of the GOP presidential primary with Nicky Haley's campaign beaten again in New Hampshire and on fumes while Trump promises retribution to all his opponents and threatens to blacklist any supporters of Haley. Vice President Kamala Harris was in Waukesha and President Biden in Superior this week. Democrats clearly see Wisconsin as central to Biden's re-election, so expect to see the President and other top administration officials here often. We dissect the sudden and unplanned closure of a large hospital and clinic system in the Chippewa Valley and Governor Evers' immediate call for Medicaid expansion to stabilize rural hospitals and clinics. Robert debriefs Governor Evers' State of the State speech, and assesses the major policy proposals he advanced heading into a critical election year. We discuss Speaker Vos' failed attempt to bate Governor Evers and Legislative Democrats into a bad deal on new legislative maps. Meanwhile, Assembly Republicans again block the impeachment of Election head Meagan Wolf by their even crazier faction. Question, would one sentence of support from their strong man leader Donald Trump change their position? We talk about the new world in Wisconsin politics with the impending Legislative maps, where we likely have the first fair election for control of the Legislature in over a decade. How does this new democratic world shape what the Governor and Legislative Democrats should be supporting for the remainder of the legislative session? We also take a deeper dive into the Congressional maps lawsuit. A Stanford University expert advising the plaintiffs says Wisconsin Congressional maps are the most partisan slanted in the U.S.
Wisconsin Republicans continue to try and make their point about politics, gerrymandering and compromise over the state's new political maps. The State Assembly on Wednesday approved the maps drawn almost entirely by Gov. Tony Evers. Assembly Democratic Leader Great Neubauer said the effort to adopt Evers' map is a Republican effort to continue to gerrymander the state and an effort to rush a decision on redistricting. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wisconsininfocus/support

Big news day in Wisconsin. Here are just some of the headlines: Assembly Republicans advance fast-tracked proposal to revamp how Wisconsin's political maps are drawn Wisconsin Senate moves to fire elections administrator Meagan Wolfe, setting stage for legal battle Wisconsin Senate votes to override veto that provided 400 years of funding for public schools Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to resume abortion services Cost estimates to repair, rebuild Milwaukee's Mitchell Park Domes are 'staggering' Assembly Republicans pass measures loosening child care center rules Then we have a discussion about, "who can you trust anymore?" on the heels of two pieces of great investigative journalism: Rotten tomatoes has been getting paid by PR firms and The food industry pays ‘influencer' dietitians to shape your eating habits.
Wisconsin Republican lawmakers continue to say their $3 billion tax cut is pretty much what Gov. Evers wanted. Assembly Republicans said their plan, which cuts taxes for most people in Wisconsin and makes retirement essentially tax-free in the state, is in line with the governor's campaign promise of a middle class tax cut. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wisconsininfocus/support
Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is deploying a new maneuver to avoid having the liberal-controlled court weigh in on the state's electoral maps: writing new ones. At 3am Tuesday morning, Vos and the Assembly Republicans drafted legislative that would be akin to "Iowa Style Nonpartisan Redistricting", then they held a press conference about it that same day, with no plans to give it a public hearing before they vote on it on Thursday. Kristin, Greg and Jane have thoughts about this - including a couple red flags that people should be aware of. Here is a really good X/twitter thread from John Johnson, who breaks down what's in the new redistricting bill and how it ultimately isn't a huge departure from what we currently do.
Multiple sources have confirmed to "The Dan O'Donnell Show" that Republicans who control the Wisconsin Assembly have been working for weeks to impeach new Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz over her refusal to recuse herself from an upcoming electoral maps case.
It's all things budget and shared revenue in the Wisconsin state capitol as local governments try to stave off fiscal cliffs after years of frozen state funding.
Republicans in the Wisconsin Assembly are showing just how tough they want to get on crime. Lawmakers on Wednesday took up a laundry list of proposals that include guaranteed prison time for convicted felons caught with guns, make it tougher for prosecutors to drop certain felony charges, define the difference between a riot and a protest, and get tougher on reckless drivers in Wisconsin. Only the reckless driving proposals have a chance of actually becoming law. Rep. Bob Donovan, R-Greenfield is the author of AB 55, which would double the fines and jail time for people convicted of reckless driving, and AB 56 which allows local governments to seize cars from reckless drivers who have not paid their fees and fines. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wisconsininfocus/support

The state's 5 largest school districts tell Republican leaders they're halting 2021-22 school year planning because of funding uncertainty caused by the draconian state budget cuts to education. The Republican-controlled state Assembly has passed a slew of tough-on-crime bills. One would allow extended supervision to be revoked, for someone who commits a felony while on release. Another would expand the list of crimes that could land a child in a youth prison. Republicans say the bills are necessary in order to keep communities safe. But Democrats have blasted the plan, arguing that many states instead have taken steps to reduce the prison population. And, it's likely that Democratic Gov. Tony Evers will veto the measures. In this week's Capitol Notes conversation, WUWM's Marti Mikkelson asked JR Ross of WisPolitics.com why the GOP pushed so hard for the bills.
