In this episode, I invited my good friend Ben Hopkins to help me co-host and read some Impact Submissions that were a part of a gift card raffle. In these submissions, I asked participants to highlight an individual or set of people that have impacted their life in any way. With laughter and some great banter, Ben and I read through some very thoughtful messages to provide an opportunity for those that were written about to hear their praises and appreciation from the people who look up to them.

The risks we took in our past are stepping stones to even greater surrender. Join us in part 2 of Risking Everything as we hear from Ben Hopkins, furniture designer and adoptive father about the ultimate risk - love.
Risk is defined by the possibility of harm or loss. How we respond to risk will determine if we are waiters or shapers. Risk is something that we, as world shapers, all must deal with. Sometimes it is hard to determine if we are just taking risk for the sake of risk, or if we are risking because it is something God has invited us into. Joining us in this two part series is furniture designer, Ben Hopkins. Ben has worked for many cutting edge companies and creates work spaces that are inspiring and functional. Not only has Ben taken great risks in his work, but in his family as well. We left this episode challenged and encouraged and we hope you will too.

The discussion focuses on the questions: What makes a building healthy? What impact can architectural design have on our behaviour? What’s the link between sustainability and the community? How can we ensure sustainability isn’t just another fad? What can designers do to make a real impact when it comes to sustainability?

Grrl on Grrl: intersectional and trans-inclusive music & interview show
I met Danielle at the SD Women Music Industry night last year and was intrigued with her work running a DIY record label in Savannah, Georgia where she attended SCAD. She now works for San Diego-based Topshelf Records. In this interview we talk about the ups and downs of running a house venue, her DIY label Bomb Shelter Records, and one way to foster safety in the music scene. A warning in relation to our discussion on a safe scene: we talk about PWR BTTM as one example of a band fighting for safe spaces. Unfortunately, since the interview, Ben Hopkins has been accused of sexual assault. For more info and resources, check further down in the show notes. Thank you to Danielle Leonard (and Marty!) for chatting with me and to all the artists for permission to use their song on the podcast. And thank you to The Fresh Brunettes, who are providing their song "Best of the Worst" as the new Grrl on Grrl theme song! You can find their album Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition on CDBaby.

May 2017 was supposed to be the start of the next stage in the career of queercore band PWR BTTM. They were set to release their next record Pageant--the follow up to the well-received 2015 full length debut Ugly Cherries. But then Jezebel.com posted accusations of sexual assault against PWR BTTM member Ben Hopkins by an anonymous accuser. Before the end of May 2017, the band found themselves dropped by their label and management team and a touring member of the band quit. The band have issued a statement on their Facebook page denying the accusations, but all this has left many PWR BTTM fans not knowing what to think. I first saw PWR BTTM a few years ago when they opened at the Biltmore for Ra Ra Riot. While I interviewed Wes from Ra Ra Riot, he proudly wore a neon-pink PWR BTTM sweat shirt. Next time I saw the band, they were headlining at 333 on a bill with Bellows and Lisa Prank. It was a great night, a fun crowd. (Each act on the bill stayed to watch the others perform at the back of the room--which is a rare thing.) My leather jacket straight music snob friends (there to see Bellows) could mix with tank top, glitter and cotton candy colored hair queer folk there to see PWR BTTM. Two very different crowds who don't mingle enough got to enjoy a great show together and everyone felt safe. While at the PWR BTTM show, I met Maguire (who goes by the pronouns them/they), a young PWR BTTM super fan--such a fan they had come to Vancouver from a remote community just to see the band. I wanted to get their take on this horrible situation. "The space that PWR BTTM created was like no other. I've been to punk shows, rap shows, and rock shows of all sorts, but PWR BTTM stood out because of the way they didn't just use the space, but transformed it. For a few short hours, I felt safer at a show than I'd ever felt previously. Both band members constantly stressed the importance of their "No Mosh" policy and what consent means to them between quips about appetizer bread from the nearby Ethiopian restaurant and being berated by hot Canadian border guards. They spoke and the people listened, danced, and respected their wishes and the people around them. As someone who has woken up with bruises from errant moshers the day after a show the feeling of being able to really let go and not worry about what other people are doing in the space surrounding me, allowed me to enjoy the music more than you ever could at a regular show where people are pushing you mercilessly, unconcerned with any other person's idea of enjoying a concert. The idea that each person entered into this space purely to enjoy the music without impeding others elevated the experience. This band has meant more to me than any other ever has. Hands down. And it still does, I can't change the way this band changed me and the effect their music has had on me. I am who I am today because of things I have learned from their records. I am sincerely devastated more than anything by the accusations laid against them." This is my chat with Ben and Liv from PWR BTTM as we hung out in the band's tour van parked outside 333 while it rained outside on a Friday night in November 2016. Tracks played on the show… 1) PWR BTTM, Ugly Cherries (2015) “I Wanna Boi” 2) PWR BTTM, Ugly Cherries (2015) “Ugly Cherries” 3) PWR BTTM, Ugly Cherries (2015) “Dairy Queen” 4) PWR BTTM, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014) “Carbs” mp3 5) PWR BTTM, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014) “Gendr” 6) PWR BTTM, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014) “Trade” NO songs CANCON

Sexual assault and harassment has plagued the music industry since it's earliest days. Th e latest band to write a chapter in this sad story are New York pop-punkers PWR BTTM. Over the past few weeks, the world saw the band literally fall apart before its eyes afte singer, Ben Hopkins, found himself the subject of serious and credible accusations of sexual assault, an act that is antithetical to message that the LGBTQ-friendly duo has been preaching in their music and at their shows since their inception. Kevin, Marcus and Eduardo are sitting down to take a hard look at sexual assault in the music industry, what people can do to protect themselves from these situations, and, most importantly, what can all of us to help the survivors of these most heinous of acts. Sonic shaman Thurston Moore is back with a new solo LP, and loads of feedback to spare. But is the world better with yet another piece of wax in it, or is rock-and-roll best left as an art that lives on the stage? Kevin and Eduardo are getting real with the rock legend's latest.PLUS! Montreal's She-Devil were the big hit of this years SXSW, and now their debut, self-titled LP has finally landed.
