On this special episode of "Between The Notes" edition here on The Business Side of Music, show contributor Jack Sharkey and host Bob Bender go on a rant, discussing the value of the larger venue concert, and why some acts are having a difficult time selling out these days. Are they (the artist) still viable? Is the cost (and the unpredictable weather when its outdoors) worth going to stand around with hopefully thousands of your closest friends in a partially filled event? Jack and Bob delve into why some acts should no longer find themselves anticipating performing at large venues, when its difficult to put butts in the seats, and the scaling back to smaller venues such as auditoriums or theaters (or clubs) might make more financial sense.... in spite of their egos. The Music Store. Also known as the social gathering place for musicians to gather at, check out the latest musical gear, purchase their goods such as guitars, drums, strings, and sticks. But the traditional music store is much more than that. Its a locale where musicians both new and seasoned can get together and share their chops, collect new ideas, and exchange phone numbers and email addresses. It's where bands are created. But with the recent announcement of the closing of one of the largest music store chains in the Country, the selection of choices has diminished somewhat. But has it? We still have across the nation and the world, the traditional mom and pop music stores, still opening their doors every day, competing against the online internet based music retailers. Jack Sharkey and Bob Bender bring another special edition of the "Between The Notes" series here on The Business Side of Music, discussing the demise of the traditional big box music stores, and how its now more important than ever for today's musician to seek out and put their hard earned cash into the local music retail establishments when purchasing new music gear. Continuing our ongoing series of "Between The Notes" episodes with music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, We have a discussion that is often overlooked, or at the very least ignored... The loss of hearing due to years of performing live music. Jack, who himself suffers from hearing loss because of loud volumes on stage (along with a inexperienced sound engineer on occasion), had permanent damage done to his ears after decades performing live. Ironically, Sharkey also works in the audiophile business for a speaker company, and explains how hearing damage can affect your day to day living, whether its with family, or in the workplace. This outcome comes down to causing injury that can be permanent if not addressed. Jack shares thoughts on how to prevent hearing loss, and what it takes to get some of those frequencies back if the damage is done. As for the episode title, you'll just have to tune in and listen (it comes from the usual antics Jack and Bob do while in the studio!). www.kefspeakers.com Creator and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Showrunner and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded at Music Dog Studios in Nashville TN Mixed and Mastered at Bobby's Diner & Studio in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. dis·rup·tion (noun) Definition: "A radical change to an existing industry or market due to technological innovation." According to our guest Jack Sharkey, who is with KEF Audio, music and the culture at large needs disruption to keep it fresh and engaging. The digital revolution and the chokehold the “industry” has on art has made it nearly impossible for the next generation of disruptors to be heard. There is plenty of good music being made today and we shouldn't always subscribe to the philosophy that music was better back in the day so to speak. Music is music, and it will always touch those who wish to be touched by it. The difference today is the folks who control the money aren't willing to upset the apple cart by taking a chance on something that hasn't been tried before. Who are the disruptors of music today? When can we anticipate the next Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, or The Beatles, all who turned the music and cultural scene upside down? On this very special edition of The Business Side of Music, we share the microphone with Jack Sharkey, who in addition to being a technical advisor for KEF, is also a Blog writer, and the host of the "Between The Notes" podcast show. Creator and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Showrunner and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy.
