For his fifth studio album, Peter Gabriel teamed up with Canadian Daniel Lanois to create the most successful album of his career. It went to number 1 here in Canada, and reached number 2 in the U.S. where it also earned numerous Grammy nominations, including for Album of the Year. It is now considered one of the defining albums of the 80's. Randy Renaud marks its 40th anniversary on the Chronicles of Rock.
Forty years later, So still stands as one of the most ambitious, emotional and sonically adventurous albums of the 1980s. Released in 1986, the landmark record transformed Peter Gabriel from respected art-rock innovator into a full-fledged MTV superstar thanks to unforgettable songs like Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes, Big Time and Red Rain. This week on the Stuck in the '80s Podcast, Spearsy revisits one of the show's classic deep-dive episodes celebrating the 40th anniversary of an album that helped define sophisticated pop music in the MTV era. Originally recorded in 2010, this fan-favorite episode features commentary from Peter Gabriel superfan Bassnote, whose passion and deep knowledge of the album help uncover why So continues to resonate with music lovers decades later. From the groundbreaking music videos and experimental production techniques to the emotional vulnerability running throughout the record, the episode explores how Peter Gabriel blended art rock, world music, pop and cutting-edge studio technology into something completely unique for its time. Along the way, Spearsy and Bassnote revisit the massive impact of Sledgehammer on MTV, the emotional power of In Your Eyes and the cinematic atmosphere of tracks like Red Rain. They also discuss the album's legendary guest musicians, including Kate Bush, Youssou N'Dour and Laurie Anderson, and how the album captured both the ambition and emotional complexity of the late 1980s. The conversation also explores the larger legacy of Peter Gabriel — from his early progressive-rock work with Genesis to his role in shaping socially conscious and artistically daring pop music throughout the MTV generation. If you love classic '80s albums, audiophile production, art rock, new wave, emotionally powerful songwriting and deep dives into music history, this episode belongs in your playlist. The Stuck in the '80s Podcast has spent more than 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. Well, Fly Me to the Moon! Is Baconsale doing another episode about Unforgettable romantic tunes? Yes, we are, and we're doing it with Open Arms. However, this time we examined VH1's list of Endless Love songs and put them in a tournament to see which Unchained Melody will win At Last. Is Your Song on the bracket? Even if it is, just Breathe, and remember that while it may be a favorite In Your Eyes, it may not do so Wonderful Tonight. On the other hand, Maybe I'm Amazed how far some iconic tracks will go. But no matter what happens, just remember that You Are So Beautiful, I Will Always Love You, and My Heart Will Go On. How Deep Is Your Love? Well, press play, Babe, because I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. Also, You Don't Bring Me Flowers, but you still can visit Baconsale.com to download this bracket and find our official Spotify playlist of songs that are Always on My Mind.
Peter Gabriel's So is one of the most iconic art-pop albums of the 1980s, a record that blends emotional vulnerability, ambitious production, and global musical influences into something both personal and cinematic. After years of being known as the “enigmatic” former Genesis frontman—dabbling in experimental textures, avant-rock, and political themes—Gabriel pivoted toward a more accessible yet deeply crafted sound with So. The result was a creative crossroads where pop hooks met worldbeat rhythms, and cutting-edge studio techniques met soulful songwriting. At its heart, So is an album about connection—romantic, spiritual, and human. You can hear it in the yearning “In Your Eyes,” the playful and sensual “Sledgehammer,” the haunted introspection of “Red Rain,” and the grief-stricken storytelling of “Don't Give Up,” his duet with Kate Bush. The album pairs emotional depth with sonic brilliance: meticulously layered percussion, innovative sampling, and a wide palette of instruments from horns to synthesizers to traditional African rhythms. So also marked Gabriel's breakthrough into the mainstream, supported by visually groundbreaking music videos—especially “Sledgehammer,” which became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its stop-motion innovation. But the album remains far more than its singles. Its sequencing, flow, and emotional arc make it a cohesive, immersive listen that still feels fresh decades later. In short: So is a rare achievement—an art-rock album that became a pop classic without compromising its intelligence, experimentation, or emotional honesty. If you're exploring the most enduring albums of the '80s, this one is essential.

Martin Luther, J.S. Bach, and Reformation Sunday -- this most Lutheran of all cantatas is our subject for today. "Ein feste Burg" was the battle-cry of the Reformation: "A mighty fortress is our God!" Bach's cantata weaves in all 4 stanzas of Luther's strong hymn. We marvel at movement 1 with its "dizzyingly complex counterpoint" (as Richard Atkinson puts it in his video). This is one of the maybe 2 or 3 most complex opening chorale fantasias in all of Bach's cantata ouevre, and that's a high bar to clear! But then we zoom in on a more tender moment, the end of the alto/tenor duet in movement 7: "[the heart] will finally be crowned, when it slays death". Here, the bass line drags down in twisting chromatic motion, the tempo slows, and Bach resists the urge to return to an "A" section of text, instead closing the movement with a short instrumental coda. BWV 80 Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, as performed by Netherlands Bach Society under the leadership of Shunske Sato, Artistic Director Come see this very cantata, BWV 80, in Orange, California at a free concert put on by Alex's church music program! October 20, 4pm, more details at this link. Also on the program: a new arrangement of A Mighty Fortress, orchestral liturgical music, BWV 29 sinfonia, and "Dona nobis pacem" from Mass in B minor. Translation of the text of BWV 80 from bachcantatatexts.org, which we mentioned in this episode A great article about BWV 80 featured on the Bach Choir of Bethlehem's website Dizzyingly Complex Counterpoint in BWV 80: video by Richard Atkinson which we mentioned in this episode "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, a song that was referenced in this episode. The last minute or so of the song features the dense instrumentation that Alex mentioned: 2 bassists, 2 drummers, etc. Also, here is a great episode of the podcast Strong Songs which breaks down "In Your Eyes".

As the needle drops on another episode of Music in My Shoes, we're whisked away to a time when movie scenes and their soundtracks became inseparable in our minds. I fondly recall the arresting notes of The Police's "Roxanne" echoing through "48 Hrs.," and who could forget John Cusack serenading us outside a window with Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" in "Say Anything"? It's a walk down the memory lane, peppered with personal anecdotes that'll have you grinning, including the charming mix-up with Gabriel's song approval and Jimmy's own encounters of being mistaken for Cusack. Ah, the joys of a musically infused nostalgia! This episode's heartbeat is set to the rhythm of Cannon Rogers' pedal steel guitar, as he shares his serendipitous journey from pandemic pastime to sharing the stage with Cracker. His story is a testament to the magnetic pull of music, highlighting the raw energy of live performances and the influences that drive a musician's passion. From the complexities of mastering his instrument to the profound effect of playing alongside his idols, Cannon's tale is a harmonic blend of dedication and dream-chasing that resonates with anyone who's felt the call of the stage. Finally, Cannon and I sink into the grooves of his favorite albums that have sculpted his sonic landscape. With tales wrapped around each record, from Steve Earle's "Transcendental Blues" to the live ecstasy of the Grateful Dead's "Without a Net," we unpack the profound impact these albums have had on our lives. And as the show closes, we invite you to connect with us, sharing your own musical journeys and the tunes that have soundtracked your most memorable moments. Step into our shoes, and let's keep the beat going together on Music in My Shoes.

A controversial song which is still beyond brilliant and with durable and positive musical impact, and a cover that does a complete musical relocation of the song without losing the magic. Graceland, originally by Paul Simon, covered by Willie Nelson. Outro music is In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, but it's the bit at the end where we get to hear the stunning Wolof singing by Youssou N'Dour — and which came out in the same year as Graceland.
Dust off your boomboxes, we're headed back to 1989 with Say Anything, staring John Cusack, Ione Skye and John Mahoney. "Noble underachiever" Lloyd enters into a "friends with potential" relationship with brainy and beautiful Diane the summer after they graduate from high school. Will their fledgling situationship survive interference from family, legal trouble, an international move, Lloyd's complete lack of direction, Diane's feelings of having wasted her childhood, and a five-and-a-half-minute Peter Gabriel Song? Ross Harper on The DJ Sessions On Location Sessions at ADE 2023 10/19/23 About Ross Harper - “Really, my artiste, you amaze me. The lengths you will go to in order to accomplish your own destruction” - An excerpt from Neuromancer by William Gibson I have had an unswerving devotion to electronic music ever since my heady baptism in the 90s London rave scene which culminated in an intense 5 years of studying music production. Since then I have spent a lifetime delving deeper and deeper into production. My music has been compared to Jon Hopkins, Robert Miles and Orbital. Although these similarities are discernable, I am simply an artist determined to do my own thing. My major early influences as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Portishead, Morcheeba and then everything 90s rave. I grew up in a single parent family and my mum has been my greatest role model, she was a Children's Party Entertainer for most of her adult life. My first name Ross means “headland”, the piece of land that sticks out into the sea and helps create somewhere wild, as well as the bay where people can enjoy the sea. My family name, Harper, comes from ancient times, Harper's are traditionally musicians who play music at festivals and for the royal gentry. My ambition is to live up to both these names I have been given. Every DJ set I share is a blank slate waiting to be written, I play anything from techno, drum & bass, deep house, dark disco, progressive house, cool ambient and everything in between. My personal productions are rich, varied and never to a script. The Ambient Girl series explores downtempo and has seen support from Cici, Lemonella and Ben Malone on Kiss FM. In Your Eyes e-zine dubbed it as “strong candidate for electronic album of the year”. Whereas my beat driven works have been supported by industry legends like Charlotte de Witte, Enrico Sangiuliano, John Dignweed, Kölsch, Laurent Garner, Martin L Gore of Depeche Mode, Sasha, and Nemone on BBC Radio 6. I am also the founding father of City Wall Records, where my A&R skills have signed tracks played in numerous Boiler Room sets including SNTS at Kompass and Ancient Methods in Berlin. I hold a weekly residency on www.aajamusic.com every Friday from 1000hrs GMT. I also present a monthly two hour show on AAJA on the fourth Monday of every month at 1800hrs where I share a plethora of cutting edge new underground releases. We watched the documentary film “Classic Albums: Peter Gabriel - So,” but mostly we're talking about our favorite PG music and concert moments. And, of course, we just had to watch “Say Anything.” Wouldn't you?Kelly saw Peter's I/o Tour live in Pittsburgh this past weekend. So, we talk about that and how it holds up to his past concerts.Susan and Kelly are old enough to have fallen in love with Peter's music during his 1 - 4 phase, also known as Car, Scratch, Melt, and Security. We mostly listened to “4” this past couple of weeks, while Cort mostly listened to “So.” A few highlights from this episode:“Solsbury Hill” was Peter's first solo singleDue to some confusion, Peter first rejected Cameron Crowe's request to have “In Your Eyes” for “Say Anything.” Cameron kept pushing because all the other songs he tried totally failed to have the impact he wanted. There were hundreds of variations of the song “In Your Eyes,” pieced together with 96 different versions on multitrackManu Katché recorded the drums for “Sledgehammer” in one takeThe Pittsburgh I/o concert was excellent, even most of the new songs (Kelly highly recommends!)“So” producer Daniel Lanois locked Peter in a barn to get him to finish some lyrics“So” was the quickest album Peter had made up to that point in a “speedy” 10 monthsFour Peter Gabriel songs appear in our beloved series “The Americans”We do not break out into song in this episode (copyright infringement!), but we do share a few lyrics!Next week: Hollywood Legacy Families!-Original music by Garrett ThompsonFollow us on Instagram @GeekGirlSoupContinue the conversation on FacebookListen to Cort's podcast with Brad at PureFandom.comCheck out Susan's movie stats on Letterboxd Email your questions and comments to GeekGirlSoup@gmail.comGeek on!

Kristin Griffith is a writer, LGBTQ+ advocate, and product marketing consultant in the tech industry. She has several publications, including the book, Rush: Memoir of a Gay Sorority Girl, which has been featured in The Sorority Life and the Kappa Alpha Theta Magazine, and is currently being adapted into a feature film. Other publications include In Your Eyes (featured in “Secret Sisters: Stories of Being Lesbian and Bisexual in a College Sorority”) and her work was featured in the Journal of Applied Psychology (“The disclosure dilemma for gay men and lesbians: "Coming out" at work”). Kristin is currently working on two feature film screenplays, both romances showcasing queer female characters. She holds an MBA in Marketing from UCLA Anderson School of Management and has worked in tech companies including Meta, Intuit, Netflix, PayPal, and Adobe. Currently, Kristin volunteers for the Trevor Project and lives in Oakland with her wife and rescue dog. Book Synopsis: Rush: Memoir of a Gay Sorority Girl is an emotional roller coaster of a story about a shy girl from Texas who, in her quest for love and belonging, struggles with her sexual orientation and gender expression within the confines of sorority life at a Midwestern university. This memoir offers an exclusive peek into sorority and fraternity culture: rushing, pledging, initiation, partying, drinking, hooking up—and homophobia. Kristin lets us intimately witness her coming-out journey: drama with guys, fumbles with girls, romance with a female teacher; angst from keeping secrets; coming out in the student newspaper; the confidence of being out, along with the pain of being rejected for it. It's about falling down and standing tall, as we figure out who we are, and who we want to be.

We had the pleasure of interviewing VIA over Zoom video!Singer-Songwriter and Producer, VIA grew up in China listening to Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop and Jazz Ballad has shaped her musical taste with heavy imprints of 70s', 80s' and 90s' music. She distills the essences from the music she loves and mixes them in her own way. After she got her bachelor degree in Contemporary Writing & Production from Berklee College of Music, she has released 5 singles independently, wrote and produced several singles for other artists throughout 2019 - 2021. A 12-track Mixtape ‘FREE FALL' issued on major label Republic Records China in spring 2022. As an entrepreneur, VIA co-founded the VLN record label with longtime collaborator BWLN in 2022.This release is a dual EP concept, EP1 and EP2 are in contrast to each other. EP1 is called ‘Hallucinating POV' as the main theme is a hallucination of love. I see the endless sky ‘In Your Eyes'. ‘Catch 22' gives you butterflies, feeling insecure and mood swings in between extreme ecstasy and melancholy. You came into my life ‘just in time'. What do you call a song that bombed on the charts back in the day, that now booms out of radios and streaming apps nationwide? Chris Molanphy has a name for these songs: legacy hits. Elton John's “Tiny Dancer.” Etta James's “At Last.” The Romantics' “What I Like About You.” Peter Gabriel's “In Your Eyes.” Talking Heads' “Once in a Lifetime.” Many catalysts can change a song's trajectory, from movie scenes to stadium singalongs, wedding DJs to evolving tastes. Sometimes the hivemind just collectively decides that this Whitney Houston hit, not that one, is her song for the ages. Join Chris as he explains how the charts sometimes get it wrong, and how legacy hits correct the record—and counts down 10 of his favorite flops-turned-classics. Podcast production by Kevin Bendis and Merritt Jacob. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
