Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (BWV 80): alto/tenor duet

Martin Luther, J.S. Bach, and Reformation Sunday -- this most Lutheran of all cantatas is our subject for today.  "Ein feste Burg" was the battle-cry of the Reformation: "A mighty fortress is our God!"  Bach's cantata weaves in all 4 stanzas of Luther's strong hymn. We marvel at movement 1 with its "dizzyingly complex counterpoint" (as Richard Atkinson puts it in his video).  This is one of the maybe 2 or 3 most complex opening chorale fantasias in all of Bach's cantata ouevre, and that's a high bar to clear!  But then we zoom in on a more tender moment, the end of the alto/tenor duet in movement 7: "[the heart] will finally be crowned, when it slays death". Here, the bass line drags down in twisting chromatic motion, the tempo slows, and Bach resists the urge to return to an "A" section of text, instead closing the movement with a short instrumental coda. BWV 80 Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, as performed by Netherlands Bach Society under the leadership of Shunske Sato, Artistic Director Come see this very cantata, BWV 80, in Orange, California at a free concert put on by Alex's church music program!  October 20, 4pm, more details at this link.  Also on the program: a new arrangement of A Mighty Fortress, orchestral liturgical music, BWV 29 sinfonia, and "Dona nobis pacem" from Mass in B minor. Translation of the text of BWV 80 from bachcantatatexts.org, which we mentioned in this episode A great article about BWV 80 featured on the Bach Choir of Bethlehem's website Dizzyingly Complex Counterpoint in BWV 80: video by Richard Atkinson which we mentioned in this episode "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, a song that was referenced in this episode.  The last minute or so of the song features the dense instrumentation that Alex mentioned: 2 bassists, 2 drummers, etc. Also, here is a great episode of the podcast Strong Songs which breaks down "In Your Eyes".

As the needle drops on another episode of Music in My Shoes, we're whisked away to a time when movie scenes and their soundtracks became inseparable in our minds. I fondly recall the arresting notes of The Police's "Roxanne" echoing through "48 Hrs.," and who could forget John Cusack serenading us outside a window with Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" in "Say Anything"? It's a walk down the memory lane, peppered with personal anecdotes that'll have you grinning, including the charming mix-up with Gabriel's song approval and Jimmy's own encounters of being mistaken for Cusack. Ah, the joys of a musically infused nostalgia! This episode's heartbeat is set to the rhythm of Cannon Rogers' pedal steel guitar, as he shares his serendipitous journey from pandemic pastime to sharing the stage with Cracker. His story is a testament to the magnetic pull of music, highlighting the raw energy of live performances and the influences that drive a musician's passion. From the complexities of mastering his instrument to the profound effect of playing alongside his idols, Cannon's tale is a harmonic blend of dedication and dream-chasing that resonates with anyone who's felt the call of the stage. Finally, Cannon and I sink into the grooves of his favorite albums that have sculpted his sonic landscape. With tales wrapped around each record, from Steve Earle's "Transcendental Blues" to the live ecstasy of the Grateful Dead's "Without a Net," we unpack the profound impact these albums have had on our lives. And as the show closes, we invite you to connect with us, sharing your own musical journeys and the tunes that have soundtracked your most memorable moments. Step into our shoes, and let's keep the beat going together on Music in My Shoes.

Episode 117 Electronic Keyboards in Jazz, A Recorded History, Part 1 of 2 Playlist   Length Start Time Introduction 05:42 00:00 1.             Vernon Geyer, “Day After Day” from All Ashore / Day After Day (1938 Bluebird). Soloist, Hammond Electric Organ, Vernon Geyer. 02:22 05:42 2.             Milt Herth Quartet / Milt Herth Trio, “Minuet in Jazz” from Home-Cookin' Mama With The Fryin' Pan / Minuet In Jazz (1938 Decca). Milt Herth was one of the first to record with the Hammond Organ Model A. His playing was more focused on melody and counterpoint and not so much on creating a lush progression of chords. This was recorded a few years before the availability of the Leslie rotating speaker, which added a special tone quality to later Hammonds, such as the model B3. 02:44 08:04 3.             Milt Herth Quartet / Milt Herth Trio, “Looney Little Tooney” from Flat Foot Floojie / Looney Little Tooney (1938 Decca).  Vocals, O'Neil Spencer; Drums, O'Neil Spencer; Guitar, Teddy Bunn; Hammond Organ, Milt Herth; Piano, Willie Smith (The Lion). 02:50 10:46 4.             "Fats" Waller And His Rhythm, “Come Down to Earth, My Angel” from Come Down To Earth, My Angel / Liver Lip Jones (1941 Bluebird). Waller was an extremely popular ragtime and stride piano player and vocalist. In this number, he takes a rare turn on an electric organ, presumably an early model Hammond. Vocals, Piano, Electric Organ, "Fats" Waller; Bass, Cedric Wallace; Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, Gene Sedric; Drums, Slick Jones; Guitar, Al Casey; Trumpet, John Hamilton. 03:10 13:36 5.             Collins H. Driggs, “When Day is Done” from The Magic Of The Novachord (1941 Victor). Soloist, Hammond Novachord, Collins H. Driggs. This was an early polyphonic keyboard that generated its sounds using valve, or vacuum tube, oscillators. Made by Hammond, the Novachord was an entirely different electronic instrument than its tone-wheel organs. The Novachord had unique, synthesizer-like controls over envelope generation, band pass filtering and vibrato controlled by a series of flip switches, offering the keyboardist a unique suite of sounds. 03:11 16:45 6.             The Four Clefs, “It's Heavenly” from It's Heavenly / Dig These Blues (1943 Bluebird). Hammond Electric Organ, James Marshall. Another organ recording and a nice duet with a guitarist Johnny "Happy" Green. 02:41 19:54 7.             Ethel Smith And The Bando Carioca, “Tico-Tico” from Tico-Tico / Lero Lero / Bem Te Vi Atrevido (1944 Decca). Another was a popular and skilled organist using a pre-B3 Hammond. 02:45 22:36 8.             Slim Gaillard Quartette, “Novachord Boogie” from Tee Say Malee / Novachord Boogie (1946 Atomic Records). Bass, Tiny Brown; Drums, Oscar Bradley; Guitar, Slim Gaillard; Piano, Dodo Marmarosa. While the Hammond Novachord plays a prominent role in this recording, the player is not credited. 02:57 25:20 9.             Milt Herth And His Trio,” Twelfth Street Rag” from Herthquake Boogie / Twelfth Street Rag (1948 Decca). Recorded in New York, NY, September 5, 1947. Described on the recording as a “Boogie Woogie Instrumental.” Hammond Organ, Milt Herth; Drums, Piano, Uncredited. Herth had been recording with the Hammond organ since 1937. 03:10 28:16 10.         Ben Light With Herb Kern And Lloyd Sloop, “Benny's Boogie” from Benny's Boogie / Whispering (1949 Tempo). This track includes the triple keyboard combination of piano, organ, and Novachord. Hammond Electric Organ , Herb Kern; Piano, Ben Light; Hammond Novachord, Lloyd Sloop. 02:37 31:27 11.         Johnny Meyer Met Het Kwartet Jan Corduwener, “There's Yes! Yes! in your Eyes” from Little White Lies / Thereʼs Yes! Yes! In Your Eyes (1949 Decca). Accordion player Johnny Meyer added a Hammond Solovox organ to his musical arrangements. The Solovox was monophonic and it added a solo voice to his performances. This recording is from the Netherlands. 03:22 34:04 12.         E. Robert Scott, R.E. Wolke, “Instructions For Playing Lowrey Organo” (excerpt) from Instructions For Playing Lowrey Organo (circa 1950 No Label). Promotional disc produced by piano and organ distributor Janssen, presumably with the cooperation of Lowrey. This is a 12-inch 78 RPM disc, but is undated, so I believe that picking 1950 as the release year is safe because the Organo was introduced in 1949 and 78 RPM records were already beginning to be replaced in 1950 by the 33-1/3 RPM disc. Recordings of this instrument are extremely rare. I have no such examples within a jazz context, but being a competitor of the Hammond Solovox, I thought this was worth including. 03:23 37:26 13.         Ethel Smith, “Toca Tu Samba” from Souvenir Album (1950 Decca). One of the great female masters of the Hammond Electric Organ was Ethel Smith. Her performances were mostly considered as pop music, but she had the knack for creating Latin jazz tracks such as this. Featuring The Bando Carioca; Hammond Electric Organ soloist, Ethel Smith. 02:25 40:48 14.         The Harmonicats, “The Little Red Monkey” from The Little Red Monkey / Pachuko Hop (1953 Mercury). Jerry Murad's Harmonicats were an American harmonica-based group. On this number, they included the electronic instrument known as the Clavioline. The Clavioline produced a fuzzy square wave that could be filtered to roughly imitate many other instruments. The record is inscribed with the message, “Introducing the Clavioline,” but the player is not mentioned. 01:56 43:12 15.         Djalma Ferreira E Seus Milionarios Do Ritmo, “Solovox Blues” from Parada De Dança N. 2 (1953 Musidisc). From Brazil comes a jazz group that included the Hammond Solovox Organ as part of its ensemble. Invented in 1940, the Solovox was a monophonic keyboard intended as an add-on to a piano for playing organ-flavored solos. It had a 3-octave mini keyboard and controls over vibrato and attack time, and tone settings for deep, full, and brilliant. Piano, Hammond Solovox Organ, Djalma Ferreira; Bass, Egidio Bocanera; Bongos, Amaury Rodrigues; Drums, Cecy Machado; Guitar, Nestor Campos. 02:31 45:08 16.         Eddie Baxter, “Jalousie” from Temptation (1957 Rendezvous Records). Piano, Hammond Organ, Celesta (Electronic Celeste), Krueger Percussion Bass, Eddie Baxter; rhythm section, uncredited. Like Ethel Smith, Baxter was pushing the limits of popular music with his virtuosity on the organ and other instruments. In this track you can hear the electronic celesta with its chime-like sounds near the beginning before the electric organ and guitar dominate the rest of the piece. 02:33 47:38 17.         Eddie Baxter, “Temptation” from Temptation (1957 Rendezvous Records). Hammond Electric Organ, Eddie Baxter. Piano, Hammond Organ, Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Krueger Percussion Bass, Eddie Baxter. In this track, you can clearly hear the Wurlitzer electric piano in several sections. 02:08 50:10 18.         Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “Advice to Medics” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). This excursion into one of the first records released by Sun Ra as a bandleader of the Arkestra was recorded in 1956 at RCA Studios, Chicago. This track is a solo for the Wurlitzer Electric Piano, an instrument invented in 1954 and that was quickly adopted by many jazz and popular music players. 02:02 52:17 19.         Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “India” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). A work featuring the Wurlitzer Electric Piano played by Sun Ra, miscellaneous percussion; electric bass, Wilburn Green; Drums, Robert Barry and William Cochran; Timpani, Timbales, Jim Herndon; and trumpet, Art Hoyle. 04:48 54:18 20.         Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “Springtime in Chicago” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). This work features Sun Ra playing the acoustic and electric pianos. Wurlitzer Electric Piano, piano Sun Ra; bass, Victor Sproles; Tenor Saxophone, John Gilmore; Drums, Robert Barry and William Cochran. 03:50 59:14 21.         Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “Sunology” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). Another number with both the acoustic and electric pianos. Of interest is how Sun Ra moves deftly from one keyboard to the other (these recordings were made in real time), often mid-phrase. This was a style of playing that Sun Ra would continue to perfect throughout his long career and many electronic keyboards. Wurlitzer Electric Piano, piano Sun Ra; bass, Victor Sproles; Tenor Saxophone, John Gilmore; Drums, Robert Barry and William Cochran; Alto Saxophone, James Scales; Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Pat Patrick. 12:47 01:02:54 22.         Steve Allen, “Electronic Boogie” from Electrified Favorites (1958 Coral). From Steve Allen, who played the Wurlitzer Electric Piano on this track. This track has the characteristic brashness that was typical of the Wurlitzer sound. 02:23 01:15:40 23.         Steve Allen, “Steverino Swings” from Electrified Favorites (1958 Coral). From Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Steve Allen. Unlike many tracks featuring the Wurlitzer Electric, which make use of its distortion and emphasize its sharp attack, it was possible to closely mimic an acoustic piano as well, as Allen does here. I had to listen to this several times before I believed that it was the Wurlitzer, as the liner notes state. But you can hear certain tell-tale sounds all along the way—such as the slight electrified reverb after a phrase concludes and the occasional thump of the bass notes played by the left hand. 02:54 01:18:02 24.         Michel Magne, “Larmes En Sol Pleureur (Extrait D'un Chagrin Emmitouflé)” from Musique Tachiste (1959 Paris). Jazz expression in a third-stream jazz setting by French composer Michel Magne. Third-stream was a music genre that fused jazz and classical music. The term was coined in 1957 by composer Gunther Schuller after which there was a surge of activity around this idea. In this example, the Ondes Martenot and vocalist add jazz nuances to a chamber music setting, the interpretation being very jazz-like. Ondes Martenot, Janine De Waleine; Piano, Paul Castagnier; Violin, Lionel Gali; Voice, Christiane Legrand. 02:38 01:20:54 25.         Ray Charles, “What'd I Say” from What'd I Say (1959 Atlantic). This might be the most famous track ever recorded using a Wurlitzer Electric Piano. The fuzzy, sharp tone added depth and feeling to the playing. The opening bars were imitated far and wide for radio advertising of drag races during the 1960s. 05:05 01:23:30 26.         Lew Davies And His Orchestra, “Spellbound” from Strange Interlude (1961 Command). This was one of Enoch Light's productions from the early 1960s, when stereo separation was still an experiment. This is the theme from the Hitchcock movie with a melody played on the Ondioline, a monophonic organ and an otherwise jazzy arrangement with a rhythm section, reeds, and horns. Arrangement, Lew Davies; Ondioline, Sy Mann; Bass, Bob Haggart, Jack Lesberg; Cymbalum, Michael Szittai; Drums, George Devens, Phil Kraus; French Horn,Paul Faulise, Tony Miranda; Guitar, Tony Mottola; Reeds, Al Klink, Ezelle Watson, Phil Bodner, Stanley Webb; Trombone, Bobby Byrne, Dick Hixon, Urbie Green; Produced by, Enoch Light. 03:29 01:28:34 27.         Sy Mann and Nick Tagg, “Sweet and Lovely” from 2 Organs & Percussion (1961 Grand Award). Duets on the Hammond B3 and Lowrey Organs “propelled by the urgent percussive drive of a brilliant rhythm section.” This is a unique opportunity to contract and compare the sounds of the Hammond and Lowrey organs with percussion. Hammond B3 Organ, Sy Mann, Nick Tagg. The track begins with the Lowrey and demonstrates the sliding tone effects made possible by its Glide foot switch. 02:58 01:32:02 28.         Enoch Light And The Light Brigade, “Green Eyes” from Vibrations (1962 Command). More stereo separation hijinks from Enoch Light. This tune features the Ondioline in an exchange of lines with the guitar and other instruments. The Ondioline is first heard at about 35 seconds. Ondioline, Milton Kraus; Bass, Bob Haggart; Guitar, Tony Mottola; Percussion, Bobby Rosengarden, Dan Lamond, Ed Shaughnessy, Phil Kraus; Piano, Moe Wechsler; Trumpet – Doc Severinsen; Woodwind – Phil Bodner, Stanley Webb; Produced by, Enoch Light. 02:50 01:34:59 29.         Jimmy Smith, “Begger for the Blues” from The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith--Bashin' (1962 Verve). Jimmy Smith was a great jazz soloist on the Hammond B3 organ. This stripped-down arrangement shows his nuanced expression skills with the organ. 07:26 01:37:49 30.         Jimmy Smith, “Walk On The Wild Side” from The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith--Bashin' (1962 Verve). This big band arrangement of a theme from the movie Walk on the Wild Side features the Hammond B3 of Smith in the context of a full jazz orchestration. 05:54 01:45:12 31.         Dick Hyman And His Orchestra, “Stompin' At The Savoy” from Electrodynamics (1963 Command). Arranged, Lowrey Organ, Dick Hyman; Bass, Bob Haggart; Drums, Osie Johnson; Guitar, Al Casamenti, Tony Mottola; Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Bongos, Congas, Bass Drum, Bells, Cowbell, Bob Rosengarden, Phil Kraus; Produced by Enoch Light. Hyman shows off the steady, smooth tonalities of the Lowrey and also makes use of the Glide foot switch right from the beginning with that little whistling glissando that he repeats five times in the first 30 seconds. 02:50 01:51:06 32.         Sun Ra, “The Cosmos” from The Heliocentric Worlds Of Sun Ra, Vol. I (1965 ESP Disc). The instrumentation on this entire album is quite experimental, especially the dominance of the bass marimba, Electronic Celesta, and timpani of Sun Ra. The celesta is seldom heard on jazz records, but it is the only electronic keyboard found on this track. Marimba, Electronic Celesta, timpani, Sun Ra; Percussion, Jimhmi (sp Jimmy) Johnson; Performer, Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra; Baritone Saxophone, Percussion, Pat Patrick; Bass, Ronnie Boykins; Bass Clarinet, Wood Block, Robert Cummings; Bass Trombone, Bernard Pettaway; Flute, Alto Saxophone, Danny Davis; Percussion, timpani, Jimmi Johnson; Piccolo Flute, Alto Saxophone, Bells, Spiral Cymbal, Marshall Allen. 07:31 01:53:54 33.         Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra, “The Magic City” from The Magic City (1966 Saturn Research). You won't be disappointed to know that Sun Ra gave the Clavioline a turn on this album. This was prior to his experimenting with synthesizers, which we will cover in Part 2 of this exploration of early electronic keyboards in jazz. He incorporated the Clavioline in many of his mid-1960s recordings. Clavioline, Piano, Sun Ra; Alto Saxophone, Danny Davis, Harry Spencer; Percussion, Roger Blank; Trombone, Ali Hassan; Trumpet, Walter Miller. 27:24 02:01:22 34.         Clyde Borly & His Percussions, “Taboo” from Music In 5 Dimensions (1965 Atco). Vocals, Ondes Martenot, Janine De Waleyne. Yes, Ms. De Waleyne was a French vocalist and Ondes Martenot player. 03:33 02:28:44 35.         Jeanne Loriod, Stève Laurent and Pierre Duclos, ''Ordinateur X Y Z” from Ondes Martenot (1966 SONOROP). Album of broadcast library music from France that happened to feature the Ondes Martenot played Jeanne Loriod; drums, uncredited. The dynamic expression features of the monophonic electronic instrument can be clearly experienced on this track. 02:05 02:32:16 36.         Roger Roger, “Running with the Wind” from Chappell Mood Music Vol. 21 (1969 Chappell). Broadcast library recording with various themes played using the Ondes Martenot. This track features a solo Ondes Martenot and is backed by an electric harpsichord. The Ondes Martenot used the same electronic principle to create smooth, flowing tones as the Theremin, only that it was controlled by a keyboard. In this piece, the articulation of the Ondes Martenot is quite apart from that of the Theremin, including its double-tracked tones and the quick pacing which is rather un-Theremin-like. 01:28 02:34:20 37.         Roger Roger, “Night Ride” from Chappell Mood Music Vol. 21 (1969 Chappell). Broadcast library recording with various themes played using the Ondes Martenot. While this track features a flute solo, you can hear the Ondes Martenot from time to time, especially in the middle break. Other uncredited musician play drums, harp, and perhaps a celesta on this track. 01:35 02:35:45 Opening background music: Dick Hyman And His Orchestra, “Mack the Knife,” “Satin Doll” and “Shadowland” from Electrodynamics (1963 Command). Dick Hyman playing the Lowrey organ. Arranged, Lowrey Organ, Dick Hyman; Bass, Bob Haggart; Drums, Osie Johnson; Guitar, Al Casamenti, Tony Mottola; Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Bongos, Congas, Bass Drum, Bells, Cowbell, Bob Rosengarden, Phil Kraus; Produced by Enoch Light. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For a transcript, please see my blog, Noise and Notations. I created an illustrated chart of all of the instruments included in this podcast, paying special attention to the expressive features that could be easily adopted by jazz musicians. Ross Harper on The DJ Sessions On Location Sessions at ADE 2023 10/19/23   About Ross Harper - “Really, my artiste, you amaze me. The lengths you will go to in order to accomplish your own destruction” - An excerpt from Neuromancer by William Gibson I have had an unswerving devotion to electronic music ever since my heady baptism in the 90s London rave scene which culminated in an intense 5 years of studying music production. Since then I have spent a lifetime delving deeper and deeper into production.  My music has been compared to Jon Hopkins, Robert Miles and Orbital. Although these similarities are discernable, I am simply an artist determined to do my own thing.  My major early influences as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Portishead, Morcheeba and then everything 90s rave. I grew up in a single parent family and my mum has been my greatest role model, she was a Children's Party Entertainer for most of her adult life.  My first name Ross means “headland”, the piece of land that sticks out into the sea and helps create somewhere wild, as well as the bay where people can enjoy the sea. My family name, Harper, comes from ancient times, Harper's are traditionally musicians who play music at festivals and for the royal gentry. My ambition is to live up to both these names I have been given. Every DJ set I share is a blank slate waiting to be written, I play anything from techno, drum & bass, deep house, dark disco, progressive house, cool ambient and everything in between. My personal productions are rich, varied and never to a script. The Ambient Girl series explores downtempo and has seen support from Cici, Lemonella and Ben Malone on Kiss FM. In Your Eyes e-zine dubbed it as “strong candidate for electronic album of the year”.  Whereas my beat driven works have been supported by industry legends like Charlotte de Witte, Enrico Sangiuliano, John Dignweed, Kölsch, Laurent Garner, Martin L Gore of Depeche Mode, Sasha, and Nemone on BBC Radio 6. I am also the founding father of City Wall Records, where my A&R skills have signed tracks played in numerous Boiler Room sets including SNTS at Kompass and Ancient Methods in Berlin. I hold a weekly residency on www.aajamusic.com every Friday from 1000hrs GMT. I also present a monthly two hour show on AAJA on the fourth Monday of every month at 1800hrs where I share a plethora of cutting edge new underground releases.   About The DJ Sessions -   “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. We watched the documentary film “Classic Albums: Peter Gabriel - So,” but mostly we're talking about our favorite PG music and concert moments. And, of course, we just had to watch “Say Anything.” Wouldn't you?Kelly saw Peter's I/o Tour live in Pittsburgh this past weekend. So, we talk about that and how it holds up to his past concerts.Susan and Kelly are old enough to have fallen in love with Peter's music during his 1 - 4 phase, also known as Car, Scratch, Melt, and Security. We mostly listened to “4” this past couple of weeks, while Cort mostly listened to “So.” A few highlights from this episode:“Solsbury Hill” was Peter's first solo singleDue to some confusion, Peter first rejected Cameron Crowe's request to have “In Your Eyes” for “Say Anything.” Cameron kept pushing because all the other songs he tried totally failed to have the impact he wanted. There were hundreds of variations of the song “In Your Eyes,” pieced together with 96 different versions on multitrackManu Katché recorded the drums for “Sledgehammer” in one takeThe Pittsburgh I/o concert was excellent, even most of the new songs (Kelly highly recommends!)“So” producer Daniel Lanois locked Peter in a barn to get him to finish some lyrics“So” was the quickest album Peter had made up to that point in a “speedy” 10 monthsFour Peter Gabriel songs appear in our beloved series “The Americans”We do not break out into song in this episode (copyright infringement!), but we do share a few lyrics!Next week: Hollywood Legacy Families!-Original music by Garrett ThompsonFollow us on Instagram @GeekGirlSoupContinue the conversation on FacebookListen to Cort's podcast with Brad at PureFandom.comCheck out Susan's movie stats on Letterboxd Email your questions and comments to GeekGirlSoup@gmail.comGeek on!

Michael Jackson's “Thriller” – one of the biggest hit albums of all time - also marks a quantum change in how rock music was marketed and sold.   Brought up as part of The Jackson 5, Michael saw himself as an entertainer crossing musical genres and categories. He almost single-handedly made music videos into a serious art form.In those days, with typical video budgets around $50k, the video for “Thriller” had a budget of $1m and a top Hollywood director in John Landis. Total recording budget for the entire album was $750k! Our “Album you must hear Before you Die” is  “So”, Peter Gabriel's 1986 blockbuster, produced by Daniel Lanois, an Eno disciple who'd just produced U2's “The Unforgettable Fire”. The hit single from this album, “Sledgehammer” also had a dynamite film clip featuring state-of-the art stop-motion photography.   In Jeff's Rant, he is surprisingly gentle to Justin Bieber.  Who'd have thought it possible? There's lots in this episode to enjoy.  We hope you do!  References:  Justin Bieber, Ricky Gervais, Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois, So, world music, Manu Katché, Youssou N'Dour, Sledgehammer, Redeye Records, Don't Give Up, Kate Bush, Big Time, Tony Levin, In Your Eyes, Red Rain, Jerry Marotta, Number Ones, Tom Breihan, Billie Jean, I want you Back, The Wiz, Off The Wall, Quincy Jones, Beat It, biggest-selling album of all time, Singing in the Rain, John Landis, An American Werewolf in London, Moonwalk, Vincent Price, Welcome to my Nightmare, The Black Widow, Steve Lukather, Toto, Eddie Van Halen, Bad, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, George Michael, Weird Al YankovichEpisode PlaylistEat ItFatSmells Like Nirvana

Kristin Griffith is a writer, LGBTQ+ advocate, and product marketing consultant in the tech industry. She has several publications, including the book, Rush: Memoir of a Gay Sorority Girl, which has been featured in The Sorority Life and the Kappa Alpha Theta Magazine, and is currently being adapted into a feature film. Other publications include In Your Eyes (featured in “Secret Sisters: Stories of Being Lesbian and Bisexual in a College Sorority”) and her work was featured in the Journal of Applied Psychology (“The disclosure dilemma for gay men and lesbians: "Coming out" at work”). Kristin is currently working on two feature film screenplays, both romances showcasing queer female characters. She holds an MBA in Marketing from UCLA Anderson School of Management and has worked in tech companies including Meta, Intuit, Netflix, PayPal, and Adobe. Currently, Kristin volunteers for the Trevor Project and lives in Oakland with her wife and rescue dog. Book Synopsis: Rush: Memoir of a Gay Sorority Girl is an emotional roller coaster of a story about a shy girl from Texas who, in her quest for love and belonging, struggles with her sexual orientation and gender expression within the confines of sorority life at a Midwestern university. This memoir offers an exclusive peek into sorority and fraternity culture: rushing, pledging, initiation, partying, drinking, hooking up—and homophobia. Kristin lets us intimately witness her coming-out journey: drama with guys, fumbles with girls, romance with a female teacher; angst from keeping secrets; coming out in the student newspaper; the confidence of being out, along with the pain of being rejected for it. It's about falling down and standing tall, as we figure out who we are, and who we want to be.

Jesus or my Boyfriend? A question we all ask ourselves. Or, maybe not. In this episode, Jeremiah, Julia, and I (Nicole) play the guessing game, Jesus or my Boyfriend? Where Jeremiah and Julia tell me lyrics and I have to guess if it is a Christian worship song or a pop song. I grew up in a Romanian Eastern Orthodox Church, so I never had exposure to American worship music. Though some of the same themes still hold (i.e. the idea of being born a sinner, devoting yourself to God fully etc.), we didn't have catchy ballads. We explored what Christian messaging was in the worship songs, how one word is the only difference between a song about sex and a song about God, and how horny Christians might actually be. I mean, this music makes Jesus seem pretty horny. One of my biggest takeaways from this episode is how exposure to this worship music is actually really dangerous for children because messaging around servitude and devotion (especially for young girls) can be really damaging. Jesus Completes Us (17:00): When discussing In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, Julia speaks on how the lyrics of this song could be interpreted as a worship song: “In your eyes the light, the heat, I am complete” is the lyric, and Julia says “We are not complete generally without Jesus” in the eyes of the Church. This song was a tough guess, but we all know there is no “heat” allowed in Church spaces, as Nicole mentions after. Musical Manipulation (21:00): After discussing the song “The More I Seek You” by Hillsong, Jeremiah explains a Discovery Channel documentary about Hillsong, which is essentially a factory for producing worship songs, and he says “lots of musical manipulation” (22:18) when talking about the kinds of worship songs Hillsong is pumping out. Jeremiah and Julia highly recommend watching the documentary Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed. Jeremiah then notes how in the book “This is Your Brain on Music” the author discusses how pop singers use certain cord progressions to evoke specific emotions and how Hillsong is the master of this. Born Sinning (27:30): When talking about Nicole's guess about if a song is Jesus or My Boyfriend, she explains what gave away the lyrics “I've done wrong and I want to suffer for my sins. I've come to you because I need guidance to be true” (Criminal by Fiona Apple) to be “my boyfriend” and not a worship song: “Christians would just be like I have sinned. I am not coming to you, I am disgusting I have sinned.” The distinction being made here is that in worship songs it is usually centering the fact that people are inherently sinners, while this song differs from that ideology by seeking help and framing it is a sin that happened not one that was born into people. Defined by Sin (31:00): Julia says “Christianity really likes to define you by your sins.” A big topic when discussing the songs chosen for this episode is the intentional wording choices for the lyrics in these songs. Just the difference between “I have sinned” and “I am a sinner” is a way to tell if a song is using creative choices or a worship song that wants to instill negative Christian ideology in its listeners. If you want some spoilers, here is the complete list of songs we analyzed in this episode: 1. Your Love is Extravagant -- Casting Crowns 2. Hallelujah -- Brenton Brown 3. In Your Eyes -- Peter Gabriel 4. The More I Seek You -- Hillsong 5. Only Hope -- Mandy Moore 6. All My Life -- KCi and Jojo (Jeremiah's favorite song growing up) 7. Pour My Love on You -- Phillips, Craig, and Dean 8. Criminal -- Fiona Apple (One of my favorite songs ever) 9. In the Secret -- Chris Tomlin 10. Save Tonight -- Eagle Eye Cherry (A contender on Julia's best songs of all time list) 11. I Surrender -- Hillsong 12. Toto -- Africa (Another contender on Julia's best songs of all time list) 13. I Want It That Way -- N'Sync (Objectively the best song of all time [that's just my opinion)

Believe me when I tell you that I had an absolute blast working on this story with Bryan. He's a guy who not only understands storytelling but as a podcaster himself (check out his show Love Hurts in all the places you download) he was a really fun and easy guy to record and brainstorm with. Thanks a million, Bryan. If you'd like to hear more of Bryan's work as a storyteller, producer and comic you should check out his website, and follow him on Instagram and Twitter or give Love Hurts a like on Facebook. As you can imagine, I end up listening to the song that saved each storyteller's life dozens of times during a production cycle. It's been awhile since I enjoyed spending that much time with one track as I have with In Your Eyes this week. What an amazing song! Funny thing is, I didn't know that it was (at least supposedly) written for actress Rosanna Arquette who Peter Gabriel was dating in the mid-eighties. I also didn't know (thank you, internet rabbit holes) that Arquette was also supposedly the inspiration for Toto's 1982 hit Rosanna. Talk about the face that launched 1000 ships...As always, I love to hear from you. Everybody Wants to Rule the World, but Baconsale just wants to determine the best song in the world. Therefore, we looked In Your Eyes and used your musical submissions to see which tunes you thought embody The Spirit of Radio. As Kent, Joel, and Zack make their way through this tournament, some of your picks will be given the Respect that they deserve, whereas others will be quickly given The Kill. Regardless, you're bound to feel some Sweet Emotion as we complete the first round of this epic Song of Songs bracket.   Press play to hear us ruin our vocal cords with falsetto and then try to Shake It Off.   Download and print off our official bracket at Baconsale.com.

So sometimes friendships fizzle and gradually fade. Sometimes there's a HUGE blowout and you give each other the middle finger and never speak again. But what happens when POOF! Suddenly your best friend, or even just a friend in general, just stops communicating with you? Is she mad? Did I do something? Have I been doing something and she is just now had it up to her eyeballs? Did I sleep with her husband and have amnesia? What the F is going on? She won't answer my calls, my texts, or acknowledge the card I wrote her. I'm at the point where I may go on her lawn like in "Say Anything" (I'm dating myself here) with a boom box blasting Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". Ghosting is actually more common than you think. I had NO clue so many people have had this experience and no answers, no closure. It can drive someone MAD figuring out what happened and how to fix it. But what if it can't be fixed? How do you move on and let go? This episode is for you if you are nodding to anything above or simply want to be prepared in case you're broken up with and have no answers why. I hope what I talk about makes you feel better about the situation, knowing that it probably has nothing to do with you (unless you did indeed sleep with her husband), and how to get in a better mental state about letting go of a friendship. Mom Card Drawing: "If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet..." -Fred Rogers (Could we all have a Fred Rogers in our motherhood world?!) These are a few of my Favorite Things: Simple Mills gluten free and vegan baked items. In this episode of Delphine's Circle, we have none other than the Laguna Beach Legend himself Nick Hernandez! An innovator who pioneered competitive skim boarding as a teen, and went on to bring rock and roll with a reggae twist to the musical forefront, Nick is a talent onto his own who brings wisdom of the heart and lessons of integrity to this interview setting. Both a cherished member of the Laguna Beach community, and a dear friend, we are so happy to present this gentleman on In the Circle, and stay tuned till the end for a second performance from this beautiful soul!Common Sense is the first of Nick's bands to go really big. It's still going strong, but in its most prolific years the band sold more than 50,000 albums, with “Psychedelic Surf Groove”, and 10,000 with “State of the Nation, Now and Then”. A couple of his songs have made it to Hollywood. “Never Give Up” is a big song that made it into the movie, Speed Two, and “In Your Eyes” was in the Kingpin movie, which Nick says has got a cult following.Recently Nick recorded music with Wyland as a benefit following the Gulf oil spill disaster, a trio of albums called Blues Planet I-III. And this past winter he played with noted Hawaiian musician, Willie K in his Maui music festival along with the likes of Steven Tyler, Mick Fleetwood, and Taj Mahal.Altogether with his bands Common Sense, Nick-I, and The 133 Band, he's made 12 albums. “I like it, but I don't do enough recording,” Nick said. “I'm mostly a live artist.”There's always a crowd on Fridays at Mozambique catching Nick live with his band, Nick-I & A.D.D., and other live gigs at places such as the Coach House, the Belly Up, and the OC Fair as well as special events and corporate gigs. “You always have a dream as an artist,” he muses. “Now my dream is that The 133 Band will do the film festival circuit.” Sound like a lot of balls to juggle in the air? Toss in Nick's co-passion for surfing, and add to that his participation in Surfers Healing and you've got one busy dude.Surfers Healing is an outreach program designed to foster joy and promote surf culture in the lives of autistic youth. Nick has served on the board of directors for 17 years. The idea is to get the kids out on the waves with the assistance of able surfers. “We want to give them one nice beautiful day at the beach, and just feel normal,” says Nick.  Surfers Healing was founded by the Paskowitz family because their son, Isaiah, struggled with “meltdowns and sensory overload”. Riding the waves with his father calmed him like nothing else. Now Surfers Healing provides wave rides for more than 4,500 participants in their surf camps every year. Their motto is, “One child. One family. One day at the beach.”“Now we've got enough sponsorship, we're not sleeping on the floor – we all get our own beds now!” said Nick. “It started out, ‘I'm gonna do this ‘cause it's the right thing to do', and then I loved it. We're helping these kids and it feels really good.”
