[School of Everything Else 2025] All the way back in 2017 I put together an absolutely EPIC musical journey through the first eight years of the MCU, from Iron Man all the way up to Doctor Strange. So much time has passed since then (cue many gifs of Matt Damon drinking from the wrong Grail) and Marvel has not followed my sound advice about allowing each hero (and maybe a villain or two) to retain a theme that reprises with every subsequent appearance. However, that does not mean there haven't been some truly excellent scores composed, which got side-lined in the clickbaity rush to pronounce Marvel as being formulaic, failing or indeed signifying the baleful death of film. Here for you now is a compendium of themes and sonic explorations as Phase 3 draws to its epic conclusion and Phases 4 and 5 wend their way from the small screen to the big and back again. I look forward to a third volume of these shows sometime in the early 2030s, when the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Secret Wars and whatever happens with Spider-Man and whatever inevitable soft reboot brings us to a new era of superhero cinema. 1.     The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (‘Louisiana Hero' by Henry Jackman) 2.     Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (‘Dad' by Tyler Bates) 3.     Spider-Man Homecoming (Michael Giacchino) 4.     Thor: Ragnarok (‘Main Title' by Mark Mothersbourough) 5.     Black Panther (‘Wakanda', ‘Warrior Falls' and ‘Killmonger' by Ludwig Goransson) 6.     Infinity War (Alan Silvestri) 7.     Captain Marvel (‘Main Theme' and ‘All Fired Up' by Pinar Toprak) 8.     Black Widow (‘Yelena Belova' and ‘Natasha Soars' by Lorne Balfe) 9.     WandaVision (‘Opening Themes: 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s' and ‘End Cretids' by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Christophe Beck) 10. Tim and Eve engage in a thoughtful discussion about the moral implications of the movie Red One, emphasizing the contrasting themes of belief and skepticism through the lens of a modern Christmas story. They dissect how the characters embody various aspects of morality, particularly focusing on the figure of Santa as a benevolent force and Krampus as a representation of judgment and punishment. Tim points out the film's heavy reliance on adult humor and language, which may detract from its appeal to younger audiences, while Eve underscores the emotional depth found in the character of Jack, illustrating his struggle with fatherhood and personal redemption. The hosts reference scripture, including Romans 2:1-11, to frame their conversation about the consequences of sin and the importance of true repentance. Ultimately, the episode serves as a critique of the film while also prompting listeners to consider the broader themes of faith, morality, and the true meaning of Christmas, encouraging them to reflect on their own beliefs in the context of a world filled with skepticism.Takeaways: The film Red One explores themes of redemption and the consequences of our actions, particularly through the relationship between Jack and his son Dylan. Throughout the discussion, it was emphasized that true redemption requires acknowledging one's mistakes and seeking to improve, as seen in Jack's character arc. The portrayal of Santa Claus in modern culture often detaches from his original Christian roots, leading to a misunderstanding of the holiday's true meaning. In the podcast, the speakers expressed how the naughty and nice list concept is a simplified view of morality that doesn't reflect biblical teachings on sin. The discussion highlighted how skepticism can cloud one's understanding of truth, much like Jack's initial disbelief in Santa and its implications. Back from the brink of death, commando Tyler Rake embarks on a dangerous mission to save a ruthless gangster's imprisoned familyExtraction 2: A Riveting Sequel That Amps Up the Action from the first flim., the highly anticipated sequel to the thrilling 2020 film, delivers an adrenaline-pumping experience that leaves audiences on the edge of their seats. Packed with heart-pounding action sequences, stunning visuals, and captivating performances, this film is a worthy successor to its predecessor.  Directed by Sam Hargrave, who also served as the stunt coordinator for films like Avengers: Endgame, Extraction 2 is a masterclass in action filmmaking. The movie picks up where the first installment left off, bringing back Tyler Rake, portrayed brilliantly by Chris Hemsworth. Rake is once again thrown into a perilous mission, this time to rescue a kidnapped billionaire's son in a volatile criminal underworld.  From the very beginning, the film grabs your attention and refuses to let go. The action set pieces are flawlessly choreographed, showcasing Hargrave's expertise in creating breathtaking sequences. Whether it's intense shootouts, hand-to-hand combat, or high-speed chases, each scene is executed with precision and visceral energy. The use of long takes and immersive camerawork adds a sense of realism, making you feel like you're right in the midst of the chaos.  Chris Hemsworth delivers a powerful performance as Tyler Rake, effortlessly blending vulnerability and raw physicality. His portrayal of a broken yet determined mercenary searching for redemption adds depth to the character, elevating the film beyond its action-packed surface. The chemistry between Hemsworth and young actor Rudhraksh Jaiswal, who plays the kidnapped boy Ovi, is palpable, making their on-screen relationship one of the highlights of the film.  The supporting cast also shines, with standout performances from returning actors and exciting new additions. Randeep Hooda brings intensity and complexity to his role as Saju, a conflicted former ally of Rake. The chemistry and rivalry between Hooda and Hemsworth adds another layer of tension to the narrative. Additionally, newcomer Naomi Scott delivers a compelling performance as a mysterious ally, bringing her own charisma to the screen.  One area where Extraction 2 falls slightly short is in its storytelling. While the action sequences are engrossing, the plot may feel somewhat predictable and formulaic at times. However, the film makes up for this with its impressive visuals, pulse-pounding pacing, and expertly crafted action sequences.  Furthermore, the movie's captivating score, composed by Henry Jackman, perfectly complements the on-screen chaos, intensifying the emotional impact of each scene.  In conclusion, Extraction 2 is a gripping sequel that delivers on its promise of heart-stopping action. Sam Hargrave's direction, combined with Chris Hemsworth's commanding performance, results in a captivating cinematic experience. Despite a somewhat predictable plot, the film's remarkable action sequences, stunning visuals, and strong performances make it a must-watch for fans of the genre. Prepare to be on the edge of your seat from start to finish.   Overall, Extraction 2 is a masterpiece of modern-day action cinema that deserves a place in every action movie lover's collection. This action-packed film thrusts viewers into a world of adrenaline-fueled excitement. With Chris Hemsworth as the enigmatic mercenary Tyler Rake, the movie delivers a visceral experience that keeps you on the edge of your seat. While the plot takes a backseat, the film compensates with its intense action sequences and Hemsworth's commanding performance. From explosive gunfights to heart-pounding chases, This movie caters to action enthusiasts seeking non-stop thrills. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Welcome back to the podcast! In this episode, I present and examine the music composed for the PREDATOR film franchise, from the 1987 original through to the latest installment, PREY, released via the streaming service Hulu in August 2022. My goal is to identify the themes, motifs, instrumentation and approach applied by composer Alan Silvestri (BACK TO THE FUTURE, MOUSE HUNT, THE AVENGERS) to PREDATOR (1987) & PREDATOR 2 (1990) and how this symphonic model was subsequently interpreted in the sequels and spin-offs (or not). Later, PREY eschews much of the previous musical language and charts new sonic territory, with a subtle nod to Silvestri. Additional composers represented in this pulse-pounding episode include John Debney, Brian Tyler, Henry Jackman, Harald Kloser and Sarah Schachner.    Title playtime index: PREDATOR - 00:00:00 PREDATOR 2 - 00:26:25 ALIEN VS PREDATOR - 00:37:10 ALIENS VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM - 00:44:36 PREDATORS - 00:51:52 THE PREDATOR - 1:04:48 PREY - 1:19:23   Stay safe out there, take care of yourself and each other!    Connect with the podcast on Facebook and Twitter: www.facebook.com/ascoretosettle https://twitter.com/score2settlepod   Email the show at ascoretosettlepodcast@gmail.com

Our good pal Dominic Lewis is back to take into his latest score for Bullet Train! The Brad Pitt-starring action/comedy/thriller comes from director David Leitch who brings his style and vision to the table. Dom takes us deep into exploring all about the process of working with no temp, writing material before shooting, writing and producing songs in the film, the approach and tone of the score, finding the emotion within the style of the film, recording elements on analog to achieve a certain feel, chugging tequila to get his vocals where they needed to be, blending genres, recording vocals, and so much more! We also briefly chat about his score to Baymax! on Disney+, and what it was like returning to the world of Big Hero 6 after working as an additional composer on Henry Jackman's score to the film. As always, this one is tons of fun with a BOATLOAD of insight from one of the most passionate and original musical voices in the industry. He got his start as an assistant to composers on video games and film shorts, and worked as a technical score advisor, arranger, and synth programmer, among other roles, for Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions. His first main composer credits in film arrived in 2010 with Lunatics, Lovers & Poets and Burning Palms. In the meantime, his additional music for other composers could be heard in blockbusters such as X-Men: First Class and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. In 2013, Margeson co-wrote the score for the franchise sequel Kick-Ass 2 with Henry Jackman. It incorporated rock elements into a symphonic base. That led to more action films, such as 2014's Kingsman: The Secret Service, also with Jackman. His work in other genres around that time included the 2016 biopic Eddie the Eagle and Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (with Michael Higham). He and Jackman teamed up again for 2017's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Margeson received sole credit for his music to the 2018 horror film Truth or Dare. The King's Man score is co-composed by Matthew Margerson and Dominic Lewis and can be heard in theaters now! Please Welcome, Matthew Margeson.Instagram: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Facebook: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Twitter:  @mdmcriticwww.mmcpodcast.comMondaymorningcritic@gmail.com
