Hello, and welcome to episode 193 of the Financial Crime Weekly Podcast, I am Chris Kirkbride. In this episode, starting with sanctions, the UK Government is set to consolidate its designation framework, retiring the OFSI Consolidated List in January 2026, making the UK Sanctions List the sole official source for all designations. We also look at increasing threats, as risk advisory experts warn that banks are underprepared for the surge in AI-driven fraud and must rethink resilience with enterprise-wide assessments, while the UK's NCSC reports a dramatic rise in national cyber threats, prompting the government to urge business leaders to prioritise cyber resilience at the board level. Additionally, we look at global law enforcement efforts, covering the historic US and UK crackdown on the Cambodia-based Prince Group cybercrime network, and the case of "Bitcoin Jesus" Roger Ver, who admitted tax fraud and concealing offshore assets in a deal requiring him to pay $48 million in restitution.A transcript of this podcast, with links to the stories, will be available at www.crimes.financial.
On October 1st 2025, Paxful announced the decision to "wind down operations" and blamed the "misconduct" of co-founder Ray Youssef for the company's trajectory. My guest today is Francis Pouliot, long-time Bitcoin advocate, cypherpunk entrepreneur, and CEO of Bull Bitcoin, Canada's leading Bitcoin-only exchange. Known for his uncompromising stance on self-custody, privacy, and resistance to state overreach, Francis has been a vocal defender of Bitcoin's founding ethos for over a decade. He is also a key figure in Bitcoin Jungle, a circular economy in Costa Rica where hundreds of merchants transact daily in Bitcoin. In this episode, Francis shares how his background in Austrian economics and libertarian politics, combined with the wake-up call of COVID, led him to relocate from Canada to Costa Rica. We explore the creation and growth of Bitcoin Jungle, why farmers markets are fertile ground for adoption, and how his “scale versus compromise” framework guides strategic decisions in building Bitcoin infrastructure. Francis opens up about the tension of running a regulated exchange while opposing KYC, his mission to make self-custody as seamless as custodial services, and why Bitcoin's payments layer is as critical as its store-of-value function. He dismantles the “Bitcoin is hijacked” myth spread by Roger Ver & others, addresses skepticism from the red-pilled community, and explains why barter and cash cannot scale for true financial freedom. → If you got value, please like, comment, share, follow and support my work. On today's episode I, RA George, break down everything you need to know:✅ U.S. House Voting – Crypto Bills: 3 key acts in play — GENIUS Act (stablecoin rules), CLARITY Act (defining SEC vs. CFTC), and the Anti‑CBDC Act to stop a Federal Reserve surveillance coin. The drama? 210 Democrats voted NO on Anti‑CBDC while only three — Mary Peltola, Marie Perez, and Jared Golden — backed it. After a messy Tuesday vote, Trump pressure flipped GOP votes on Wednesday and now the GENIUS Act is heading for a full vote with the others to follow.
Co-host is Jacob Boersma. Met Daniël Mol bespreken we elke week de stand van de cryptomarkt. Mises Caucus Chair Angela McArdle joins Aaron Harris and Nate Thurston to talk about Elon Musk's idea for a new political party, a potential 2028 LP presidential ticket, and her efforts to free Roger Ver, Ian Freeman, and others unjustly imprisoned for Bitcoin-related "crimes."TakeHumanAction.com
In this enlightening episode of The Free Thought Project podcast, Jason flies solo (with Matt on vacation) for a deep-dive conversation with longtime liberty activist and Free Talk Live co-host, Mark Edge. Note: Jason's mic wasn't working correctly for the first 17 minutes — but the insights are worth sticking around for. Mark's radio co-host and Free Talk Live co-founder, Ian Freeman, is currently serving time in federal prison for the "crime" of facilitating Bitcoin transactions — a glaring example of the federal government's ongoing war on crypto. We unpack Ian's unjust prosecution, his prank encounter with Joe Biden that may have put him in the feds' crosshairs, and the heartbreaking reality that Free Talk Live is now on life support. Jason and Mark also reflect on their time at the 2025 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, the energy and evolution of the crypto movement, and briefly touch on Roger Ver's new book Hijacking Bitcoin. We discuss the importance of decentralization, the co-optation risks crypto faces, and Ross Ulbricht's powerful first public speech since being imprisoned in 2013. The conversation turns toward the two-party illusion, the failures of political reform through party expansion, and whether a potential second Trump term could change the trajectory of the crypto crackdown. We wrap with a white pill: Mark's optimism, what keeps him going after nearly two decades in the fight for liberty, and how we can support Ian and others like him. This is a must-listen for anyone who cares about digital freedom, liberty activism, and the future of financial sovereignty. In this special episode of The Free Thought Project Podcast, Jason and Matt sit down with Aaron Day and Quinten van Welzen for a powerful and hopeful discussion about Zano, digital freedom, and the future of decentralized resistance. This episode avoids the heavy tech jargon and instead explores the human philosophy and mission behind Zano — a cryptocurrency project that's much more than just a coin. Quinten breaks down how Zano enables private transactions, confidential assets, community marketplaces, and even user-generated coins, making it a full privacy-respecting ecosystem built to empower individuals around the world. We also dive into Zano's deflationary economic model, contrasting it with the unchecked inflation and debt-fueled spending of centralized governments — particularly relevant as the U.S. ramps up military budgets and inches closer to CBDC-style control through stablecoins. Aaron shares insight on the broader battle for financial freedom and privacy, including his advocacy for Roger Ver, who is facing politically motivated prosecution. We end the show with an important update on Roger's case — and why a recent Department of Justice memo could mean it should be dropped altogether. If you're looking for real tools to opt out of the digital control grid — and some much-needed inspiration — this is an episode you don't want to miss. In this unforgettable episode of Beyond the Code, Yitzy Hammer sits down with Bitcoin OG and serial entrepreneur Charlie Shrem for a raw, unfiltered journey through the birth of Bitcoin, the collapse of early crypto infrastructure, and the deeply personal trials that shaped one of the industry's most iconic—and controversial—figures.Charlie opens up about how a small Israeli charity called Tikvot led him to Bitcoin, the early anarchic energy of the online forums where Satoshi once roamed, and how he helped pioneer one of the world's first Bitcoin exchanges, BitInstant, with nothing but bar mitzvah money and a handshake agreement. They talk Mt. Gox, the founding of the Bitcoin Foundation, and how a single Skype message from Roger Ver changed the course of Charlie's life. But this episode doesn't shy away from the dark turns: Charlie reflects on the moment federal agents arrested him at JFK, his experience in solitary confinement, the fallout with his family and community, and the harrowing prison conditions that tested his spirit. We also explore the redemption arc: house arrest in Pennsylvania, quiet reintegration into the crypto world, life on a boat, podcasting, venture investing—and a spiritual journey that defies binaries.Topics Covered:How PayPal freezing donations led to discovering Bitcoin; The mechanics of BitInstant and why it succeeded;Mt. Gox, Silk Road, and the cracks in early crypto;Charlie's arrest, conviction, and incarceration experience;Leaving Orthodoxy, family estrangement, and Jewish identity;Starting over, rebuilding wealth, and finding purpose; This is more than a conversation about Bitcoin—it's a story about resilience, belief, exile, and finding your people on the internet.
This Day in Legal History: Salmon P. Chase DiesOn May 7, 1873, Salmon P. Chase—former Chief Justice of the United States and one of the most prominent legal minds of his generation—died at the age of 65. Chase was a towering figure in antebellum legal and political life, best known for his ardent antislavery positions and constitutional rigor. A fierce abolitionist, he earned the nickname “Attorney General for Runaway Slaves” for his pro bono work defending fugitives in Ohio. Decades before the Civil War, Chase and Abraham Lincoln had crossed paths not as allies, but as legal adversaries. In an 1855 Illinois case—Effie Afton v. Rock Island Bridge Company—Chase represented steamboat interests, while Lincoln defended the nascent railroad industry; the trial featured two future titans on opposite sides of a commercial dispute that mirrored the country's growing sectional divisions.Despite their early courtroom rivalry and later competing candidacies for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination, Lincoln recognized Chase's legal acumen and political influence. He appointed him Secretary of the Treasury, where Chase proved instrumental in financing the Union war effort and creating a national banking system. Ever ambitious, Chase maneuvered politically from within Lincoln's cabinet, seeking the presidency even as he served. In 1864, Lincoln elevated Chase to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, where he presided over pivotal Reconstruction-era cases and the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. As Chief Justice, Chase dissented in Bradwell v. Illinois and the Slaughter-House Cases, signaling a broader vision for the Fourteenth Amendment than the Court ultimately embraced. His dissents advocated for civil rights and economic fairness at a time when the Court was beginning to retreat from radical Reconstruction. Chase died on May 7, 1873, after collapsing in New York, ending a career that spanned law, finance, politics, and constitutional interpretation.A federal judge struck down an executive order by President Donald Trump targeting the law firm Perkins Coie, ruling it violated the First Amendment and due process protections. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell found the order to be retaliatory, noting it was motivated by the firm's past legal work and its association with political opponents, including Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign. The ruling relied heavily on Trump's own public comments—more than 20 of which were cited in the lawsuit—including social media posts and statements made during official events. These remarks, spanning from 2017 through his current term, were used to show the administration's intent to punish the firm for its perceived political stance.Trump's directive revoked security clearances for the firm's lawyers, blocked federal contracts, and limited their access to government officials. Howell emphasized that the problem wasn't Trump's personal criticisms but the official actions taken against the firm based on those views. The case illustrates how Trump's characteristic unfiltered commentary undermined legal defenses by revealing the political motivations behind executive actions. Howell also cited similar coercive behavior toward other major law firms, some of which made significant concessions to avoid being targeted. Legal experts noted that this ruling could influence outcomes in related cases involving other firms. How Trump's own words helped him lose a fight with law firm Perkins Coie | ReutersSamsung Electronics announced that its subsidiary, Harman International, will acquire the audio business of U.S.-based Masimo for $350 million. The move is aimed at bolstering Samsung's position in the global consumer audio market, which is projected to grow from $60.8 billion in 2025 to $70 billion by 2029. The company emphasized that integrating Masimo's audio operations with Harman will enhance its sound technology offerings and create synergies across its mobile, TV, and home appliance divisions. The deal aligns with Samsung's broader strategy to pursue significant mergers and acquisitions to address investor concerns and drive growth. Samsung reaffirmed its commitment to delivering concrete M&A outcomes during its annual shareholder meeting in March.Samsung Electronics says unit Harman acquires Masimo's audio business for $350 mln | ReutersA growing number of wealthy defendants are pursuing pardons from President Donald Trump, some spending over $1 million on legal teams, lobbyists, and consultants to improve their chances. The pardon process under Trump's second term has become informal and politically charged, with access and loyalty appearing to play major roles in who receives clemency. Business figures such as Trevor Milton, founder of Nikola Corp., have successfully received pardons after building political connections, contributing to Trump's campaign, and framing their prosecutions as examples of a weaponized justice system.Traditional channels for clemency through the Justice Department have largely been bypassed, replaced by direct appeals to the White House and advocacy from influential allies. Lawyers well-connected to Trump's circle are reportedly charging premium fees to prepare pardon bids. High-profile figures including crypto executives Sam Bankman-Fried and Roger Ver, as well as media entrepreneur Carlos Watson, have sought or secured relief through this unofficial route. Trump's administration claims it is correcting injustices, but critics argue the system now favors those with money and political ties.Lawyers Are Quoting $1 Million in Fees to Get Pardons to TrumpA federal judge in Rhode Island has blocked the Trump administration from proceeding with layoffs at three small federal agencies, issuing a preliminary injunction against a March 14 executive order that aimed to eliminate or drastically reduce the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). Chief Judge John McConnell ruled that the order was likely unlawful, calling it “arbitrary and capricious” and in conflict with the Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act by bypassing Congress's authority to make laws and allocate funding. The coalition of states challenging the order argued the closures would cause immediate harm, and McConnell agreed, noting that MBDA had essentially been reduced to zero staff, making it impossible to administer its programs. The ruling rejected the administration's claim that the harms were merely speculative and emphasized that irreparable harm had already occurred. The judge also denied a request by the Trump administration to delay enforcement of the injunction. The legal fight is ongoing, but the decision represents a significant obstacle to Trump's broader efforts to restructure the federal government by executive order.Trump Must Halt Layoffs at Three Small Agencies, Judge Says (1) This is a public episode. Roger Ver is "Bitcoin Jesus"; he's been investing in the world's first cryptocurrency since its cost was measured in pennies. Today, he's a billionaire being targeted by the Biden Administration, which wants him imprisoned for the rest of his life. Roger has been silenced by lawfare, so he joins Charlie with his lawyer to speak on his behalf. Plus, Ryan Girdusky talks about the birthright citizenship sham, and the odds that Trump's Cabinet picks will get through the Congress.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
