Richard Parris is a co-founder at Saito - a self-sufficient Layer 1 Blockchain designed for devs that provides the foundation for building open and scalable web applications.   Why you should listen Saito is a new type of layer-1 blockchain that powers peer-to-peer applications. Saito delivers a new economic model for blockchain. Saito Consensus aligns incentives for all participants, paying nodes for scale while remaining open. Saito is designed to create a real economy running on this network, that supports an open ecosystem of peer to peer applications, where users are sovereign and own their data, and providers that serve them best are most profitable. Saito Consensus eliminates the sybil attacks, majoritarian attacks, and several other attack vectors common in proof-of-work and proof-of-stake consensus mechanisms by correcting the collective action problems buried in their incentive structures. When users send transactions into the network they add cryptographic routing signatures that specify the first-hop node(s) to which they are sending their transaction(s). Receiving nodes add similar routing signatures as they forward these transactions, creating an unforgeable record within transactions of the path they have taken into the network. These routing paths can be examined to confirm the amount of "routing work" available in a transaction. Transactions without valid routing paths contain no routing work. The amount of routing work in any other transaction is its total fee halved with each hop beyond the first that the transaction has taken into the network. The blockchain maintains a "difficulty" for block production that is measured in routing work. Nodes produce blocks when they have enough routing work in the transactions in their mempool to meet difficulty criteria. Blocks which do not contain the required amount of routing work are invalid according to consensus rules. While most of crypto uses a Web 2 model with token integrations or a federated model reliant on volunteer work, Saito applications operate in true, peer-to-peer Web 3 and are self-funding. Homo- (Greek prefix meaning ‘same'); -morphic (Greek suffix meaning ‘having a specific shape/form')Intuitively, one could deduct that homomorphic encryption indicates that the initial data and the encrypted result (cipher) could share the same form. Based on this property, it can be inferred that computation can be performed on the encrypted data, without prior decryption. By decrypting the result, you get the same output as the computation performed on the unencrypted data. While homomorphic encryption can be either additive or multiplicative, fully homomorphic encryption supports both types of operations. Unlike ZKPs, which are proofs of computational integrity, fully homomorphic encryption allows for encrypted data computation, without revealing additional information about the original data. This could provide the missing link for ensuring private transactions on blockchains' public ledgers. We were joined by Rand Hindi, CEO of Zama, to discuss fully homomorphic encryption solutions, how they differ from ZKPs & MPC, and how they can be leveraged to ensure compliant programmable privacy.Topics covered in this episode:Rand's background and his interest in privacyMeeting Pascal and founding ZamaFully homomorphic encryption (FHE)Zero knowledge proofs vs. Multi-party computation vs. Fully homomorphic encryptionTaking fully homomorphic encryption 'mainstream'Zama's productsfhEVMHow multi-party computation would secure fhEVMMulti-key homomorphic encryption & functional encryptionDeploying an FHE rollupFHE use casesPrivacyZama's business modelEpisode links: Rand Hindi on TwitterZama on TwitterFhenix on TwitterSponsors: dYdX Foundation: The recently launched dYdX chain features new governance and token economics, that empower stakers and promote validator decentralisation. Ali notes several key developments he's observing in blockchain that span from networking to usability at the application layer. These include innovations in privacy, programming languages, proof-of-stake, consensus algorithms, zero-knowledge proofs, scalability and interoperability. An important takeaway from our conversation is that Ali believes in a future of multiple blockchains that coexist with each chain serving a particular purpose. Will we see today's biggest players maintain their dominance in the future? Or are the next generation of blockchains yet to launch?

Rob Viglione from Horizen Labs returns to the show to talk about what’s new with the project and the state of the union with crypto overall! The conversation kicks off with Josh discussing his recent experience with crypto lending, and Rob talks about why he’s both skeptical and excited about what the De-Fi trend means for both crypto and physical-world economics. Rob gives his thoughts on the recent de-listing of some privacy-centered currencies by exchanges, and the careful balance crypto projects have to strike between privacy and compliance. He also spills the dirt on the new initiatives Horizen has in the pipeline, including new partnerships and innovations the company is experimenting with. Plus, a great primer on what exactly Horizen is and how it works for those unfamiliar with the project, discussions about decentralization and how to make crypto more mainstream, and predictions for 2021! What you get: 00:00 – Blockchain Spellbound 05:23 – Tech Eras & Blockchain Applications 16:33 – Transparency & Trust 20:17 – Regulation & ‘SMART' Technologies The last serious global crisis was the Financial Crisis back in 2008/09! Apart from billions of USDs going up in smoke, one FUNDAMENTAL thing got completely crushed, too…can you guess? … Hint: it's something that is very hard to gain, and very easy to destroy… people's TRUST! …TRUST in our financial system & regulators, in our political elite and institutions, there to protect all of us. Thousands of investors felt cheated and angry, yet helpless and defenseless against what they felt was a totally corrupted reality. On the Flip Side …out of THAT CRISIS… something new was CREATED! A technology, that was supposed to be the antidote to corruption, to fraud and to the potential manipulation of our financial system: The Blockchain! In 2009 Satoshi Nakamoto invented the first Digital Currency – the Bitcoin – running on the Blockchain. The Blockchain, a Decentralized, peer 2 peer technology, can be described as a ‘TRUST LAYER' to lend the highest degree of security to all stakeholders in the financial system, because it is a transparent and immutable electronic ledger. William is a direct participant in the blockchain-technology market, working alongside startups, entrepreneurs, pioneers, leaders, innovators, creators, enterprise executives and practitioners; in addition to being an investor, advisor, and Board member in some of the leading organizations in this space. At the time of publishing, William is on the Board of Directors of OB1 (USA), the OpenBazaar open source protocol that is pioneering decentralized peer-to-peer commerce, a Board Member of Blockchain Valley Ventures (Switzerland), and a Board Member of the Kin Foundation (Canada), one of the most widely used mobile App-based cryptocurrency. - - More about William Mougayar Website: https://www.linkedin.com/in/williammougayar/?originalSubdomain=ca Bio: https://www.wmougayar.com/about YT Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onYKgO6ogJg Twitter: https://twitter.com/wmougayar - - - More about Mentorit.TV http://youtube.com/mentorittv - - - Road Trip by Joakim Karud https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/vpssnpH_H4c

Marc Taverner is the executive director of the International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (INATBA) since the middle of January 2020. He has been active in the global blockchain ecosystem for more than five years, working across 20 countries, engaging with organisations from core crypto currency companies to governments and financial institutions, through to large corporates and industry associations. As executive director of INATBA, Marc is committed to positioning INATBA as the only international organization truly equipped to convene public and private industry partners with the credible support of powerful allies like the European Commission and key advisory bodies   What is blockchain? For Marc, blockchain is a type of distributed ledger technology (DLT) where transactions are recorded with an immutable cryptographic signature called a hash. These are added into a chain of blocks, with each block, validating the prior block and creating an immutable audit trail that in turn creates trust. Distributed ledger technology is a decentralised database managed by multiple participants across multiple nodes. The reason why blockchain and distributed ledger technology is important is because it finally helps us solve the issue of trust by applying technologies such as cryptography and governance models such as consensus mechanisms.   What is INATBA? To answer the question of what is INATBA, Marc took us on his journey that ultimately took him to INATBA. In the 2014, Marc was introduced to the world of blockchain and bitcoin when he met Valery Vavlivo, CEO and co-founder of Bitfury, who made him Global Ambassador & Markets Development at Bitfury. Whilst at Bitfury, Marc learned that trying to get large blockchain applications to scale, such as the Land Registry one for the Republic of Georgia or the one the Ukraine’s Government plans to auction seized assets on a blockchain, would come up against a number of friction points. These frictions points weren’t only technology ones but also one of policy and of interoperability both between nations and between technology stacks. All these applications were interesting for those governments and created a great deal of interest with other governments around the world who wanted to leverage those applications and others. But the friction points were preventing the adoption of blockchain based technologies at a massive scale. Some of these issues are rooted around the lack of standards and interoperability between technology stacks which would cause governments and large potential customers of this technology to recoil a little from making early decisions for the fear of either putting themselves into a vendor locking position, or a situation where they've made the wrong strategic technological decision. INATBA exists to address some of those friction points. They bring a number of parties together from governments and supranational bodies in the public sector to startups, SMEs and enterprises in the private sector, to try and achieve commonality across standards, good governance and interoperability. By reducing those friction points they hope for blockchain to be massively adopted.   Interoperability Establishing standards and interoperability from a technology perspective is absolutely needed and very critical for the industry to be able to develop further. But equally important is the focus on governance structures and legal structures. INATBA established the Standardisation Committee, to work across all working groups with the aim to convene discussions with parties from different standard setting bodies, policy makers and all the elements of public sector and the private sector to reach an agreement on standards and levels of interoperability across technology, across legal structures, and across country boundaries. From a governance standpoint, INATBA promotes an open, transparent and inclusive global model of governance...

Blockchain. A word that has been overhyped and yet still becoming more realized every day. Bridie Ohlsson joins us and is the Founder of Geora, a protocol for blockchain applications in agriculture. Bridie’s career with blockchain began with AgriDigital when the world was discovering and getting excited about the potential applications of blockchain. Bridie shares what the goals of any blockchain company were at that time.   “So you needed to be kind of an open and fairly non-competitive technology to encourage people to come in and experiment and work together and integrate their systems and share data.” - Bridie Ohlsson   Where AgriDigital provided access to blockchain for producers, Geora was formed to build on that and provide the next step. Geora’s protocol has isolated what data needs to be retained on blockchain and what data while significant to have for logistical reasons does not need to be tied to the product on blockchain. Bridie describes Geora as an “infrastructure” where they “work out where there’s a valuable data point.”   “We’re really trying to build tools, digital tools, that are really useful for ag so there is adoption...” - Bridie Ohlsson   Bridie expects that these “data rich assets” will lead to financial gain for producers. At the moment her company is trying “to get a really solid base of digital record keeping systems.” She admits that blockchain is not necessary to acquire that data but if the goal is to monetize that data then blockchain will be needed, so the technology is being employed now. This will ultimately provide another avenue for people or companies to invest in agriculture with real time access to the farmer’s data and all to the farmer’s benefit. The farmer will have absolute control over their data and how and when it is shared. This focus on agriculture amplifies the impact the protocol can have for its participants.   “If we can get participants who work in similar spaces, they’re going to generate value for each other quicker, which is a good test of the network effect and the network value.” Bridie Ohlsson. Dispute resolution is the process by which contracting parties settle disagreements. Whether in the form of litigation, arbitration, or other means of mediation, every contract defines a dispute resolution mechanism and jurisdiction. It is the metaphorical Lady Justice, measuring the strength of each party’s arguments, and reaching a decision based on evidence. Smart contracts are unique in this sense. Unlike traditional contracts, they are rigid and deterministic. Written in computer code, nuances in human language and vagueness of terms do not exist in this realm. There are no judges, no jury, just calculated execution. The DOA hack and other similar events have prompted observers of the space to express the need for smart contract dispute resolution. Some have suggested “exit switches” that would allow for human intervention when edge cases appear. But could the arbitration process be integrated into the smart contract and on the blockchain? We’re joined by, Federico Ast and Clement Lessage, respectively CEO and CTO of Kleros. This dispute resolution layer provides contracting parties with a fast and secure process for arbitration. The system is broken up into courts and sub-courts, each specializing in specific matters like e-commerce, insurance, and transport. In the event of a dispute, parties submit their case to Kleros, where a crowd of expert jurors analyses the evidence. When all votes are cast, the decision is enforced by the smart contract, which may unlock funds, or provide parties with additional time to fulfill the terms of the agreement. Clever incentive mechanisms reward jurors who vote with the crowd, making Kleros resistant to bribe attacks and collusion between jurors. Topics covered in this episode: Federico and Clement’s respective backgrounds, including a crowd arbitration project called Jury. Blockchain has created a new world for us all that has only just begun, but it has also fundamentally changed security requirements for our devices. For the first time, data is equal to money, and data security is paramount when all that is between your money and hackers is the ownership of your keys. Edge not only believes that centralized security services are no longer secure enough to hold keys, and users must hold their own private keys, but that the user experience should be as simple as logging into a website or application. Their goal is to make an invisible security layer that uses an encryption key, similar to a password manager, that can hold all the user names and passwords for wallets and blockchain applications, that only the intended user can access. Edge dynamically tunes the strength of the password to the strength of the device through a password hashing algorithm and has a split-key system to recover lost passwords. Paul also discusses the upcoming shift in blockchain security, and the future of both security foundations and features. Edge will be at the Blockchain, Ethereum, and Bitcoin Superconference in Dallas, Texas February 16-18. For more information, visit https://edgesecure.co
