Welcome to Baroque Sunbursts, a new series from Zer0/Repeater on Music, Culture, and Philosophy. For our inaugural episode Adam and Kyle are joined by Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix; Artist, philosopher, theologian, and musician most known for her seminal work with LITVRGY. Ravenna joins us to look back upon the opening salvo of her musical philosophy: 2009's Transcendental Black Metal: A Vision of Apocalyptic Humanism. We're going to be talking about the teeth-grinding, fist clenching experience of musical intensity, the Blast Beat and its Discontents, and how ideas spanning from Christology to Nietzsche and German Idealism have inspired her work up until today. Liturgy's latest EP is As the Blood of God Bursts the Veins of Time, and their next album 93696 will be out in March 2023, by the time this comes out they'll most likely still be on their US tour so go and see them! We talk about German Idealism, Operatic style, Negarestani's Neorationalism, Blast Beats vs Burst Beats, and Ravenna's takes on eschatology and dogmatics in the search for new religious epistemologies.LITVRGY: https://liturgy.bandcamp.com/communityRavenna's YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@HunterHuntHendrixSupport the podcast:Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comPreorder 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/Support the show

Aislinn Addington and Brian Rodriguez return for part 2 of the 2021 Teen Movie Review! Find out their thoughts on the following 2021 teen films; "Fear Street 1994", "Fear Street 1978", "Fear Street 1666", "Slumber Party Massacre", "There's someone inside your house", "Let us in", "Finding Ohana", "Plan B", "Sophie Jones", "Paper Spiders", "Blast Beat" and "The Exchange."
Host Paul Booth was joined by Colombian-American writer/director Erick Castrillon to discuss his feature film Blast Beat. Erick brings a unique opinion and wide-variety of experiences to the mic. This episode was a true joy to do for Host Paul Booth given he met Erick in passing at a small Film Festival in 2013. The last time our Host spoke to Erick he was writing a SHORT titled Blast Beat (circa 2015). What happened next is why we love Talking Movies..... His feature film, Blast Beat, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Sony Pictures and Vertical Entertainment picked up Blast Beat for distribution, which was released in May, 2021. His work has been critically acclaimed in the U.S. and abroad, connecting with audiences across multiple cultures and genres. In 2021 he consulted for Disney's animated film, Encanto, and was part of a think tank created by Sony and Montecito Pictures to bring Latinx representation to the big screen. Castrillon got his MFA in Writing for the Screen and Television from the University of Southern California, and his BA in English Literature from the Florida International University.
Blast Beat Innovator, Charlie Benante, discusses the origins of the blast beat, his recent solo album 'Silver Linings', Anthrax's Graphic Novel and much more. (2021 interview) Help support the show. Zack Snyder is once again here to save cinema with Netflix's Army of the Dead. Snyder's return to the zombie genre is flawed but fun, although Brennan and Collin disagree on how much of either it actually is. We break down our reactions to the film and the franchise that it has already spawned, as well as a pitch for the Dave Bautista/Jason Momoa buddy comedy we've all been waiting for. We also discuss the release of Blast Beat, a film that Collin had the pleasure of checking out at Sundance 2020. We round out this podcast with a trip down the rabbit hole, this time the Babble Movie Club takes a look back at 1951's Alice in Wonderland. Brennan and Collin discuss the merits and legacy of this film as it captures the best of Disney's animation and vocal talents. Sundance 2020 Special Part 3: Coming of Age Beast Beast explores the lives of three different teens who cross paths with tragic results. Director Danny Madden handles each character with sympathy and nuance. He and cinematographer Kristian Zuniga used different camera looks for each character, staying wide and documentary-style for some sequences and tight and controlled for others. The film came to the attention of Alec Baldwin who came on board as an an executive producer who helped fund its development into a feature. Blast Beat is about two teen metalhead brothers from Colombia, uprooted from their lives in Bogota and struggling to find their place in suburban America. Director Esteban Arango and writer Erick Castrillon cast real life brothers Moises and Matéo Arias, who brought an added layer of authenticity to their characters' relationship. It was also important to Arango and Castrillon to make a personal movie about their own culture, and they cast Colombian actors who spoke Spanish with authentic accents in the movie. Kelsey "Chapstick" Zimmerman joins the story. Kelsey tells us how she went from a West Virginia drummer/rock fan to a New York City metal industry artists' spouse. She is part of the metal twitter family and is actually kinda hilarious. Kelsey works for Blast Beat Network and gives some insight on what metal advertising is all about. She is an accomplished drummer having won awards in her past; she now plays in the band Manutara. Kelsey's first spin was Zeppelin which CLEARLY leads a metal fan to Incubus...I know just listen. She reveals how she meets her husband (artist Aaron Zimmerman) but she still loves this one dude named Jasper even more. She also teaches my old ass about "mean mugging"...which I had to look up. Ugh. I suck. Another fun chapter from awesome industry folk who are worth the listen. Seth W of the Skull Toasting W's joins me on the intro to tell us about a new podcast that I want everyone to subscribe to because it's hilarious.
