Noam Tomaschoff: Writer & Performer Noam's love for musicals came at the tender age of twelve, with his unforgettable performance as “Sam” in Camp Wahanowin's production of Mamma Mia. From there, he made his best friends through musicals at high school, including this show's composer, Ryan Peters; Producer, Russell Citron, and music arranger, Ben Deverett! After a sold-out run of the musical they all wrote together in Grade 12, Just A Regular Day, Noam studied drama at NYU's Tisch School, and after graduation, went on tour with TheatreWorks USA as “Farmer Brown” in the award-winning children's classic, Click Clack Moo. After moving to Los Angeles in 2017, he wrote and directed the feature film Tankhouse, starring Richard Kind and Christopher Lloyd (from Back to the Future!), which was a semi-autobiographical love letter to theatre and theatre kids. Tankhouse was distributed by Vertical Entertainment and released in 2022.  Ryan Peters: Composer Ryan Peters is a High School Drama and English teacher living in Toronto. Although his days performing onstage are likely behind him, Ryan has performed in musicals such as Cabaret, Kiss of the SpiderWoman, Into the Woods, Company, and The Last Five Years. In his spare time, he enjoys team-building, song-leading, and composing musicals about his close friends' life-altering genetic discoveries. Ryan is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with his childhood and extremely talented friends on this meaningful project — their first musical theatre collaboration since High School. He can't wait to share it with all of you! Russell Citron: Producer Russell Citron is an entrepreneur and Harvard MBA who is thrilled to be working with his high school friends to bring this musical to life. Russell's theatrical history began (and peaked) in elementary school, with his performance as Simba in the Lion King and Thenardier in Les Miserables. It was mostly downhill from there, as his more talented friends Noam and Ryan took the lead roles and sent him to perform as secondary characters, like Benny in RENT, which he played (and loved) in three different shows. Russell has taken a few vocal lessons here and there and still somehow believes that he will perform on Broadway one day. Outside of theatre, Russell was the founder & CEO of CrowdChange, a fundraising technology company. He is also the co-founder of Feed the Deed, a viral social media campaign spreading 10,000+ acts of kindness across the world. Prior to CrowdChange, Russell was a management consultant at Monitor Group and Monitor Deloitte. He hasn't produced a musical since their “five-pack” of high school friends co-produced their original musical, Just a Regular Day, but he has been dreaming of the day the group would get back together and is excited that it finally has come. Maria Gabriela Cardenas is a director, producer, and writer from Caracas, Venezuela. Her directorial debut A Dark Foe, a psychological thriller, garnered twenty awards and sixteen nominations and was distributed by Vertical Entertainment. Cardenas has done a variety of music videos, short films, including the award-winning short "The Grand Guignol" (2015). At the age of 14, she already knew she wanted to become a film director and committed to several intensive film courses in Los Angeles, California. Host Paul Booth was joined by Colombian-American writer/director Erick Castrillon to discuss his feature film Blast Beat. Erick brings a unique opinion and wide-variety of experiences to the mic. This episode was a true joy to do for Host Paul Booth given he met Erick in passing at a small Film Festival in 2013. The last time our Host spoke to Erick he was writing a SHORT titled Blast Beat (circa 2015). What happened next is why we love Talking Movies..... His feature film, Blast Beat, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Sony Pictures and Vertical Entertainment picked up Blast Beat for distribution, which was released in May, 2021. His work has been critically acclaimed in the U.S. and abroad, connecting with audiences across multiple cultures and genres. In 2021 he consulted for Disney's animated film, Encanto, and was part of a think tank created by Sony and Montecito Pictures to bring Latinx representation to the big screen. Castrillon got his MFA in Writing for the Screen and Television from the University of Southern California, and his BA in English Literature from the Florida International University.

Sorry for the delay on this episode. I got a promotion at work, live shows are returning, and I have been quite overwhelmed. Rest assured, the podcast is still happening. I just needed to catch up on the things which pay money in order to get around to putting together the next few episodes. So, after much delay, here's our episode on composer Max Aruj. Up and coming Los Angeles based composer Max Aruj had two exciting projects release on June 25: the crime drama Lansky from Vertical Entertainment, profiling legendary gangster Meyer Lansky, and the Liam Neeson-starring action-thriller The Ice Road from Netflix. The composer got his start in the industry working at the widely known film music hub Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA where he's worked closely with composer Lorne Balfe on numerous projects, including Ad Astra, Black Widow, and HBO's His Dark Materials. Max first collaborated with Lansky writer-director Eytan Rockaway on the psychological thriller The Abandoned. Their established working relationship allowed them to delve even deeper creatively this time around. The film takes place in two time periods: Lansky in his earlier years and him looking back at his life in the '80s. To reflect this, Max utilized some '80s Vangelis colors as the musical palette, mixed with orchestra. He wanted to create both a sense of darkness and sentimentality to capture both sides of such a complicated figure. The composer also leaned into his Jewish roots by including Jewish colors in the music to reflect Lansky's identity. For The Ice Road, Max collaborated with director Jonathan Hensleigh and his goal was to really play into the classic action tropes and create a next level, bombastic score. Having an archetypal character (led by the iconic Liam Neeson), allowed Max to really dig into the storyline. Once Max had the thematic tapestry nailed down, the rest of the music flowed out. I spoke by phone with Max Aruj about these two films, their differences, and his career.

Deliverance author James Dickey's final novel, an intense and primal WWII story about a crashed Air Force gunner trying to make his way through the Tokyo firebombing north to Alaska, was published in 1993 and promptly given to top shelf screenplay attempts at this nearly dialogue-free story. The first was in 1996 by David and Janet Peoples, fresh off the critical and commercial hit 12 Monkeys, with David himself having solo won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar (Unforgiven) the year of the novel's publication. The second was in a soon-to-be legendary adaptation from 1998 by the Coen Brothers, set to star Brad Pitt, follow up The Big Lebowski, and be their (then) most expensive film. On this episode, I'm joined again by writer/director Tyler Savage, as we discuss:- the legendary status of the Coen Brothers' version for its dialogue-free silence;- how the Peoples' version accomplishes the same non-verbal silent cinema;- the Peoples' uses of the intrinsically cinematic storytelling technique of the reversal;- if either team felt trapped by their past of writing overt violence;- how many of the elements of this elemental, task-oriented novel ended up in the Coens' other literary adaptation, Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men.- and if this movie will ever be made.Also:- the difference between how an accomplished screenwriter (team) who won't direct writes versus- how a writer/director team who might eventually direct writes;- how to write visuals for a visual medium where the blueprints are in textblocks;- if the screenplay format is really designed for making a good film or simply pleasing agents and gatekeepers;- and my problems with the format (spoiler: the “play” part of the word screenplay).Tyler Savage's second directed-feature, Stalker, which he also co-wrote, will be released by Vertical Entertainment in the United Kingdom on May 21 and in the United States on June 18. He also wrote and directed Inheritance, along with associate producer credits on Song to Song, Knight of Cups, and Voyage of Time.Both screenplay drafts are available to find with some judicious Googling. An adaptation of the book is still in development from Vertigo Entertainment. Dickey's original novel is itself still in print and available everywhere.
