Avenue Red turned up to Affinity at Eastern Bloc Records in Manchester's Northern Quarter back on the 17th July 2024... what a night! Event founder Max Howard AKA Maxxitrax had just kicked off a delightfully enchanting warm-up set and our ever-trusty recorder was plugged into the mixer, soundchecked and activated as quickly as possible... sadly the first few very dazzling and trippy records were missed from the recording, but what was captured 'till the end of his set was just beautiful. Max is clearly a selector's selector with top drawer technical skills. Proper solid intro vibes for a vibrant, hot summers evening session on Stevenson Square, which also later featured Tribe, Damo B and DJ Mindbender. And finally... here it is! "This is a recording of my opening set from my last Affinity party held at Eastern Bloc. I wanted to use the opportunity to play records that I wouldn't get to play in a peak time or closing slot that I will usually play in. I had picked some records out that fit this narrative but turned up without a game plan. Luckily I managed to work things out so that I could play some soul tracks to start out with and then build tension up gradually. I really enjoyed the process, hopefully the listeners will enjoy it too. Tracks from the likes of Sade, Pure Silk, Manual, The Stone Roses, Rennie Foster, Autechre - and labels such as Subject Detroit, Novamute, Peacefrog, Tresor..." Adam X's illustrious music career began in 1990 in Brooklyn, NYC, where he was born and raised. His earliest productions were released during this period, and he quickly gained momentum as one of the most adept DJs on the global underground techno scene. Alongside pioneer and brother Frankie Bones, he opened the doors of Groove Records in Brooklyn as America's first true outlet for underground electronic music with a direct focus on the techno genre. The Groove Records team also took part in organizing the first techno events ever to take place in NYC, including the legendary Storm Rave that started in 1991. Storm Rave was the first all-techno warehouse party organized on the East Coast of America, featuring line-ups with many up-and-coming artists who would later become global techno cult figures. The Sonic Groove label was born in 1995 at the upgraded Manhattan location of the shop (which also changed its name from Groove Records to Sonic Groove during the transition). Adam continues to operate the label in an exemplary and innovative way, with over one hundred releases to date, focusing on an assortment of techno music styles from many well established artists across the electronic music spectrum. A unique perspective and acute knowledge of music can be recognized in his DJ and live sets, which have always retained a unique sense of an uncompromised approach to the dance floor. Adam's approach facilitated acid techno's dominance in the early to mid-nineties, and he nearly single-handedly put the Industrial and EBM Techno cross-over genres on the map for the first two decades of the millennium. Now, Adam returns to his purist techno roots with a hard but deep thought-provoking sound, one combines the past, present and future of this timeless music. His Traversable Wormhole, ADMX-71, The Secret Initiative, Mass-X-Odus, and X-Crashed side-projects, along with his collaboration with co-conspirator U.K.-based artist Perc in their project AX&P, and with his techno life partner Maedon as Maedon-X on Tresor Records, have all strongly impacted the most discerning audiences. Adam X has also released his own work on his seminal imprint, as well as releases on some of the most essential labels to exist, both past and present, such as Wax Trax!, Direct Drive, Magnetic North, Peacefrog, Drop Bass Network, CLR, Hands Productions, as well as preeminent contemporary labels like Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, L.I.E.S, Hospital Production, and Pinkman. Adam currently resides in the electronic music capital of the world, Berlin, Germany. With unparalleled dedication, his activities never cease as he continues his individual tradition of operating on every vital level, from label activity to organizing events in the legendary Tresor club and performing in some of the world's most credible venues—a practice he has maintained since the early '90s. Adam X is a true force whose contribution has reached far into bringing the future forward for electronic music. The L.A. band the Doors continue to inspire strong opinions, even in 2023, and Beave and Len talk through the band's music in detail. Will their popularity come roaring back yet again, or has their time passed at last? Was Jim Morrison the first art rock poet, or was he a drunken fraud? Does the music hold up 50 years later? What was the secret of the band's appeal (make no mistake, at their zenith they were as big as anyone)? Tune in for some strange days.

@norman-nodge has been a resident DJ at Berghain since 2005. Being a life-long music lover, DJ and promoter of his own parties during the 90s, Norman achieved his current status as Berlin's secret weapon for serious techno. Born in East German Leipzig, raised in Brandenburg, Norman got bitten by the techno bug after the wall came down. In 1994 he started to promote several events and launched his career as a DJ. At these parties, he got to know @marcel-fengler and @marceldettmann and literally became their mentor for all things techno. At the end of the 90s, Nodge backed out of the local nightlife in order to focus on becoming a lawyer and starting a family. Five years ago, Marcel Dettmann pitched him to @berghain management and he returned to DJing and became a resident instantaneously. Since then, he plays Berghain once a month, specialising in the almost forgotten art of warming up at the beginning of a night. In 2005 he also started to produce his own tracks. His maturity proved to be very beneficial in terms of his artistic vision, as he made up his mind about what he likes and what not a long time ago already. Unsurprisingly, his outings on Dettmann's @mdrofficial label, as well as his track “Native Rhythm Electric” for @ostgutton-official left a deep impression with headstrong techno lovers. With his dusty funk, static hiss and the rich thump of his kick drums, he managed to get himself recognised as one of techno's more unique auteurs. Norman Nodge cites Detroit techno (@axis-jeff-mills, @roberthood, 430 West), Chicago House (@reliefrecords, Dance Mania) and Techno (@luke-slater, Peacefrog, Mark Broom - @beardman) as his most essential influences. Hence, it is not surprising that he fuses the old with the new and the soft with the tough when he plays out. “It is my goal as a DJ to make people dance without walking on trodden paths of recent trends. I want to sensitize dancers for unusual sounds, old and new.” Stay Rave with #R13! Escucharemos Roadhouse Blues, Waiting for the Sun, You Make Me Real, Peace Frog, Blue Sunday, Ship of Fools, Land Ho!, The Spy, Queen of the Highway, Indian Summer y Maggie McGill + Bonus tracks.
The addition of piano, organ, and synths gave a life force to some of the greatest rock music ever made. Of course when people think of rock, they naturally think of the electric guitar player bringing the thunder or the frontman with the flowing locks looking larger than life on stage, but don't you dare sleep on keyboard instruments as a vital cog in what makes rock music so friggin' awesome. The players highlighted in this week's list are among the most gifted and studious musicians to hit the rock stage. These brainiacs are certified wizards of music, and this week's guest fits the mold in the same way. Our old pal Brad Watson is a bit of a keyboard-playing wizard himself, and we were delighted to have him back in GoodList Studios for TOP TEN ROCK KEYBOARD PLAYERS. The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger gives Kyle Meredith a call to talk about the 50th anniversary of Morrison Hotel. Krieger tells us about coming up with the solo to "Peace Frog" and how Lonnie Mac came out of retirement to play bass on "Roadhouse Blues". Then we pull into the present as Krieger discusses his new album, The Ritual Begins At Sundown. The LP has a blues connection to Morrison Hotel in the song "The Hitch" as well as a very strong Frank Zappa connection. Hear about all of that as well as a small tease about next year’s 50th anniversary collection of LA Woman. The Lyric Boys explore 10 wild & hilarious lyrics by The Doors, the classic 1960s rock band from Los Angeles. We delve deep into the mind of Jim Morrison, which is a mind that's either thinking about women and alcohol -- or thinking about some bloody drug-fueled nightmare. We also discover that Jim is both "Mr. Mojo Risin'" & "The Lizard King" and debate which nickname is cooler. And we discuss how The Doors song "The Soft Parade " is very similar to "The Monster Mash." Songs discussed in this episode: "Road House Blues," "L.A. Woman," "The Soft Parade," "When The Music's Over," "The Crystal Ship," "Back Door Man," "Peace Frog," "Hello, I Love You," and "Not To Touch The Earth." Hace 50 años, medio siglo, The Doors publicaron su quinto elepé, "Morrison Hotel". - Roadhouse Blues, tomas 14, 1 y 2.

Produktion: NDR 2020.
In this troubled time of race division, anger and frustration I offer you... music! Music that was made by black people, Jewish people and White people together. No race, just music, just harmony and melody and rhythm like the beating of our hearts. Black lives matter more than I can express so here we can celebrate the invaluable contribution black culture has made. My life would be a thousand kinds of empty if it weren't for black lives. Yours would be too whether you understand that or not. Peace people... peace. We almost can't contain our excitement here, having the absolute Legend...and one of the nicest, most down to earth dedicated innovative Musician in the scene Dan Curtin join our Sol Asylum Mix Series! We're honoured to present this live mix he recorded exclusively for our Series, which will take you on a winding, twisting journey for the next hour!. Turn up, loud and enjoy the ride! Dan Curtin’s musical quest began amidst the inception of the techno and house phenomenon of the early 1990s. From his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio Dan experimented with a vast number of styles, producing innovative sounds of every variety: from Chicago to Detroit to the East Coast. Dan’s considerably impressive discography dates back to 1992 when his first releases on Detroit’s 33 RPM Records and Belgium’s Buzz motivated him to launch his own production hub: Metamorphic Recordings. His unwillingness to commit to a singular style was instrumental to his continuously fresh releases on big players such as Peacefrog, Strictly Rhythm and Sublime, and Soma while his forward-thinking approach brought him tremendous support from the likes of Carl Cox, Carl Craig, and many more. In 2003 Dan's creative instincts provoked him to relocate to the fast-paced music scene of Berlin which triggered a string of new releases on young, happening labels such as Bass Culture, Saved, Bosconi and recently on Steffi’s Dolly Dubs. (listen here) Over 70 singles, nine albums later Dan is just as innovative and fresh as he has ever been whether recording under his own name or under one of his many aliases such as Purveyors of Fine Funk. His refusal to lock himself into one style as well as his unique ability to collaborate with artists from a variety of genres has helped him to maintain not only his status as an individual amongst a world of ever-increasingly like-minded musicians but also his status as a legend over two decades. Track List: 1. Aardvark - Everything is Nothing - CROWD 2. Claro Intelecto - Peace of Mind - Delsin Records 3. Pressure Point - So Far So Good - Residual Recordings 4. Mammo - Summit - Nduja 5. We're back with episode 24! Recorded in early April 2020, this episode welcomes DJ and producer Luke Slater. @Luke-Slater has been DJing since the late 1980s, and by the 90s, his many aliases had become household names thanks to important releases on labels like Peacefrog, and Nova Mute. By 2009, Luke had joined Ostgut Ton, continuing to tour relentlessly and produce music with seemingly boundless energy — a quality with which he continues to approach his work today. His stamina is endless, and in order to keep up with the continuing love and demand for his music, it has to be. In this episode, our discussion focuses on longevity as a DJ, his mix for Ostgut's 15th anniversary, and the drive that keeps him going. ++ Music: Luke Slater - "O-Ton Reassembled 3" (From his Berghain Fünfzehn mix for Ostgut Ton) More info here: https://www.berghain.berlin/en/shop/releases/berghain-fuenfzehn-luke-slater/ Audio treatment by Airlock Mastering & Audio

John Beltran, born 4 March 1969 in Lansing, Michigan, is one of those producers that always seems to elude being pinned to any one category. His early work on Carl Craig's seminal Retroactive imprint sculpted a Detroit classic with hints of Derrick May, world music, and Jazz vibrations. He followed up in 1996 on Peacefrog with arguably one of the most sought after techno classics "Ten Days of Blue," which is still John's most successfully licensed music with songs like "Collage of Dreams" being used in the Miramax film Human Traffic and the HBO hit Six Feet Under. His next project was entitled "The Cry" under the Placid Angles guise which MixMaster Morris charted as one of his favourite albums ever. Now let's close the year out in style... Marco Passarani is one of the best loved Italian producers and DJ's, he has released a wealth of material across decades and is regarded as an influential figure in house, disco and techno circles far and wide. His music has appeared on labels such as Offen Music, Running Back, Peacefrog, Numbers and many more. This is only his solo material, not to mention the wealth of music he has created as one half of the fun loving duo Tiger & Woods. Marco's latest release is for the recently launched Italian label Unrelatable but there's talk of a big year and grand plans ahead for the celebrated producer. We saw no better way than to have him sign off our year in style with a fun mix of jackin' house and wandering arpeggios. Lock and load.

The Loft & The Weather Prophets special with Pete Astor in conversation with David Eastaugh Pete Astor was born in England, in 1960.The Loft formed in 1983, the band signing to Creation Records and releasing two singles, "Why Does the Rain" and "Up the Hill and Down the Slope". The band split at the Hammersmith Palais in 1985. Astor then formed The Weather Prophets, continuing to be managed by Creation founder, Alan McGee, and signing to his short-lived Elevation label under the auspice of WEA4 releasing the album Mayflower in 1987. Returning to Creation for Judges, Juries and Horsemen, the band split in 1989. Astor then embarked on a solo career with the albums Submarine (1990) and Zoo (1991) on Creation. Finding success in France, Astor moved to the Danceteria label to release Paradise (1992, as Peter Astor and the Holy Road), and God and Other Stories in 1992. After becoming disillusioned with the music business, he disappeared from view for a number of years, returning in the late 1990s with his Ellis Island Sound and The Wisdom of Harry projects, both releasing music on 7", 12" and 10"[5][6] for a variety of emerging independent labels such as Static Caravan Recordings,Wurlitzer Jukebox and Astor's own label, Faux Lux. The Wisdom of Harry eventually signed to Matador Records, while Ellis Island Sound, Astor's collaboration with David Sheppard, signed with Heavenly Recordings. In 2005, Astor released Hal's Eggs, a solo album including radical reworkings of folk standards on Static Caravan Recordings. At around the same time, Cherry Red released compilation albums featuring his work: The Weather Prophets' Blues Skies and Freerides (The Best Of, 1986–1989),Injury Time (Solo 89–93), a selection of solo work from his two Creation and Danceteria albums. The label also re-issued The Loft's Once More Round the Fair, a collection of their Creation recordings and session tracks. As well as reforming The Loft at this time for a limited number of shows, Astor continued to write, perform and release records with Ellis Island Sound on the Peace Frog label. The solo album, Songbox was released on the Second Language label in 2011, featuring an extra disc of cover versions of the albums' songs by Let's Wrestle, The Raincoats, Darren Hayman, Comet Gain, The Proper Ornaments, Mathew Sawyer, Dollboy and Piano Magic. He works as senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, where he teaches, researches and writes about music; in 2014, he published his study of Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation, as part of Bloomsbury's 33⅓ series. At the beginning of 2015, Astor signed to Fortuna Pop, releasing the single "Mr Music", followed by an album, Spilt Milk, recorded with James Hoare of Ultimate Painting, Proper Ornaments, and Veronica Falls.

Many of these structures that were erected primarily to protect people and property, have now become redundant. Kate Clark, Gerry O’Reilly and others have been working with local residents in the Duncairn area for a number of years to get them to a point where they are ready to contemplate barrier removal or transformation. Kate and Gerry discuss the changes to two of these structures – the complete removal of one in North Queen Street and the physical transformation of another on Duncairn Gardens. A brand new mix from the heart of house in Chicago , Paul Johnson delivers episode 69 of the Sunday Slackin' Podcast! There is reason for him to be named as the very first artist in the track "Teachers" by Daft Punk. Paul Johnson was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, the birthplace of house music where he started DJing in the mid-80s and started producing in 1990. He produced and released over 445 E.P’s for some of the most consistent labels like Dance Mania, Cajual, Relief, Dusttraxx, Peacefrog and Moody Recordings which sold over 3.5 million copies of his 1999’s hit record ‘Get Get Down’ worldwide. His remix work and collaborations with Destiny's Child, Jon B, Steve "Silk" Hurley, DJ Skip, Ce Ce Peniston, Daft Punk, DJ Sneak, K-Alexi, Stacy Kidd, Joey Beltram, Green Velvet, Armando and Ron Trent made its way into all the big jocks boxes and remain there to this day. We've entered 1970, and The Doors are back in the critical spotlight with their penultimate album, Morrison Hotel. Both a critical and fan favorite, this album saw The Doors moving (mostly) away from the pop and psychedelic sounds that dominated their last couple of albums, in favor of a rawer blues-influenced rock and roll sound. We take you track-by-track through the album, from the rollicking opener "Roadhouse Blues" through the ending of "Maggie M'Gill".Cosmic America reviews artists and their records, and we do it by going album-by-album through their careers. We are very excited to announce, episode 92 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by none other than Chicago house music legend Paul Johnson. Paul has long been a staple of the house scene, and as well as his chart-busting 'Get Get Down', also released many underground tracks for seminal labels like Peacefrog, Relief, Cajual, Moody Recordings, Crydamoure, Yellow Productions and Peppermint Jam. Paul is a real hero of ours and we are so proud to have him a part of our podcast series. Subscribe with iTunes - https://apple.co/1MQQ5me Subscribe with RSS - https://imahousegangster.libsyn.com/ Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, the birthplace of house music, Johnson started making waves in the music community at the early age of thirteen. In the summer of 1984, Paul Johnson taught himself how to spin after watching his cousin Marc spin and scratch in his bedroom. As a self taught artist, Paul's pulsating energy and passion are apparent in all his work. In high school while his peers were holding down after school jobs, Paul was a popular radio DJ. Raw talent, dedication and a deep love for house music have made Paul Johnson one of the most sought after DJ's in the world. https://www.imahousegangster.com https://www.facebook.com/imahousegangster https://www.instagram.com/imahousegangster https://www.twitter.com/imhousegangster
Pietro 'Bingo' De Lisi and Alex Carpentieri have laid down a reputation for their music selection and production. Identifying themselves as ‘dedicated purveyors of all that is good in house music’ – and having the discography to back it up – System of Survival have had a massive influence on not only Italy’s house music scene, but on the international stage as well. ‘D-Votion’ marks the second studio album from the Italian duo, and the first release on their newest home, Get Physical Music. From the first smooth pads of ‘Endless’, the album gives off an earthy warmth that can only come from a lifetime of experience. The album keeps the vibe low, while still keeping the dancefloor in mind. ‘Packing’ starts in the heavens and end on the floor, and ‘Searching for A wave’ takes the torch from there with a gritty bass sharing space with thick, yet soft chords. But it’s the melody that takes the cake here, courtesy of Surfbit in a live studio jam session; it carries the track deeper into the night. This feeling of looseness, inspired by the jazzy groove is continues in the next track, ‘From Motor City With Love’; pulling the groove a good bit deeper. ‘Distortion Under Control’ throws us into a time machine, reliving the sounds and spirit that gave birth the house in the first place. The same could be said for ‘Lazy Days’, who’s title leads us to believe just the opposite; the track turns out to be a rhythmic shuffle that delivers energy in all the right places. Next, the stunning vocals by rising Italian pop star Vhelade enchants ‘Kutting’ with her stunning vocals, giving the track an unmistakable fire of passion. ‘Breathe’, a catchy soulful disco number goes on to give a sunny, late-summer vibe that ruled the 70’s, and is born again here for 2016 while still retaining a timeless quality. The low, rolling jazz tones of D-Votion present a careful balance of the organic and mechanical, creeping an ominous bassline that seems to revel in its own presence. Salvatore Stallone lends a careful ear here, adding a smooth finesse to the mix with the xylophonic melody. The final three tracks begin to slow the momentum, ‘Peacefrog’ brings a bouncy blend of vocal delays (via Brandy and Bianca) and electric-hustle while ‘The Bear, The Wolf And The Eagle’ hypnotizes with its rhythmic ambience and low-key approach. Finally, ‘Neon Sun’ takes us out on Roberto Bove’s live screaming electric guitars in a kind of dusty power ballad for a new age, leaving a lasting warmth long after the album has played out.
I'm pleased to share the second instalment of my Between 2 Points show featuring tracks from Dense & Pika, Marco Faraone and Dennis Cruz, as well as a guestmix from Mark Archer under his Nexus 21 guise. Mark's been a big inspiration of mine having rose to fame with Altern 8 in the 1990's and I'm hugely grateful to him for recording this mix for the show. It's a brilliant one too with tracks on Peacefrog, Warp and Strictly Rhythm to name but a few of the labels he's drawn from. Enjoy!

Kelsey "Chapstick" Zimmerman joins the story. Kelsey tells us how she went from a West Virginia drummer/rock fan to a New York City metal industry artists' spouse. She is part of the metal twitter family and is actually kinda hilarious. Kelsey works for Blast Beat Network and gives some insight on what metal advertising is all about. She is an accomplished drummer having won awards in her past; she now plays in the band Manutara. Kelsey's first spin was Zeppelin which CLEARLY leads a metal fan to Incubus...I know just listen. She reveals how she meets her husband (artist Aaron Zimmerman) but she still loves this one dude named Jasper even more. She also teaches my old ass about "mean mugging"...which I had to look up. Ugh. I suck. Another fun chapter from awesome industry folk who are worth the listen. Seth W of the Skull Toasting W's joins me on the intro to tell us about a new podcast that I want everyone to subscribe to because it's hilarious. The new METAL MINUTE is exactly up the alley of all of this growing online community and #metalbandcampgiftclub supporters. It's made by Seth and Petkau, the guy helping support the #metalbandcampgiftclub birthday lists. Check. It. Out. Support. The Avenue Red Podcast reaches double figures with an installment from Malta-based DJ, Producer and label boss Owen Jay. His Batti Batti imprint began as a digital label in 2009 with a dozen releases before it developed into a vinyl label in 2012. It's a project he has built from the ground up and the quality of output has been exceptional from the start, pushing a discerning style of house music full of groove and melody and a strong penchant for warm analogue sounds. As a producer, Owen has EP's out on a range of labels including Underground Quality, Minuendo and Moods & Grooves as well as his own label. As a DJ he has played all over the shop and has gigs upcoming at Panorama Bar in Berlin for an Underground Quality label party (28-02-2014) and also at Siroco in Madrid (21-03-2014). This mix sums up exactly how he works it on the 1's and 2's. Take a listen! Hi all, Some of you may know I've relocated from Sunny Scotland to a rather damp Sydney, Australia. While trying to get to grips with this new city and the Aussie rate of pace (pretty chilled) I've found this old nugget of a mix I recorded back in 2005. It was a promotional mix I would give away on CD at gigs in Edinburgh (the old way of sharing music and promotion. It's all much easier now with file sharing, podcasts, facebook and what have you. Some big tunes for me back then are included in the mix. Recloose joining kiwi's Fat Freddy's Drop frontman Joe Dukie on “Dust”, the amazing boogie-anthem-although-it-was-a-b-side “Burning Up” by Imagination, the extraordinary “Flookin” by Solid Groove was not out my record box for years and not forgetting the rap classic “Me, Myself and I”. I hope you enjoy the sounds... Akabu feat. Linda Clifford - “Ride the Storm” (NRK 2002) Young and Co - “(I Like) What You're Doing To Me” (Brunswick 1980) De La Soul - “Me, Myself and I” (Tommy Boy 1989) DBX - “And There Ain't” (Muggsy 1998) Imagination - “Burning Up” (R&B 1981) Loleatta Holloway - “Love Sensation (Acapella)” (Salsoul 1980) Atlantic Conveyor - “We Are” (Untracked 2004) Mark De Clive Lowe - “Travelling” (Antipodean 2004) A Bossa Electrica - “Veja A Sol (Spiritual South Mix)” (Raw Fusion 2004) Wagon Cookin - “Natural High” (Appetizers 2002) Solid Groove - “Flookin” (Loungin 2005) Bugz in The Attic - “Booty La La” (BITAsweet 2004) Recloose featuring Joe Dukie - “Dust” (Peacefrog 2005) Brian Chambers - “Higher Love (Greg Gauthier and Tony L's Vocal Mix)” (ZGS 2004) Next Evidence - “Morning Breeze (Dim's Disco Blend)” (Capitol 2002) The Rebirth - “Evil Vibrations” (Ubiquity 2004) Well, Europe, I hear you're having a rough winter, I hope this warms the soul a little. See you down the front, Gary on the Money
