On this episode of The MovieBabble Podcast, Brennan, Spencer, and Collin revisit and rank the entire Planet of the Apes franchise. We share our memories and (mostly) fondness for each installment from 1968's Planet of the Apes all the way to this year's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. We also find time away from the very serious discussion to monkey around, pick a few favorite characters, and figure out which clan of Ape society we would be a part of. The hierarchy of power in the DCEU did, in fact, not change. With the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes the end of the tumultuous DC Extended Universe. With plenty of plans announced and mercilessly scrapped -- and a lot of bad movies along the way -- Collin and Spencer reflect back on a weird string of movies, some highlights and lowlights, and if there's any hope for the future of DC movies. Aside from the Barbenheimer phenomenon, the summer movie season has been a little odd, with many high-profile franchise entertainments underperforming. Included in that was Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny, which hasn't exactly lit the box office on fire. But, it gave Collin and Nick a great excuse to catch up and chat about the film and the franchise as a whole while the movie calendar slips into a bit of a sleepy moment before the fall. Listen as they rank the entire Indy franchise, from Archimedes' dial to the Holy Grail! Barbenheimer is finally here! To celebrate what is most likely the biggest moviegoing event in years, Spencer, Collin, and Nick came together to share their experiences completing the highly anticipated double feature. They then discuss their thoughts on both Oppenheimer and Barbie individually, and why they're both great in their own, very different ways. And, because the double feature has become such a phenomenon, the trio share what movies they would pair with each. Few movies have had more of an impact on a genre than The Evil Dead on horror. From unwittingly unleashing a grave evil on the world by reading an unholy text, to the horror happening in an all-too-remote location, the Evil Dead's fingerprints are all over the place. On this episode of the podcast, Spencer and Nick journey through the entire Evil Dead series, from the original to Evil Dead Rise. Together, they share their favorite moments from each film, their love for the zany craft that goes into the earlier installments, and Bruce Campbell's enduring charm. "If I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!" Words to live by. You'd be hard-pressed to find a film franchise more in-grained in American popular culture than Rocky. From the rugged neo-realism of the original classic, to the America-fuck-yeah hilarity of Rocky IV, all the way through to Ryan Coogler's brilliance in the franchise's reboot, Rocky has taken on a lot of different forms, but never fails to entertain. Well, except maybe for Rocky V. In honor of the release of Creed III, this time on the podcast, Spencer, Collin, and Nick revisit the entire Rocky franchise to talk about the highlights, the lowlights, and all the robots in-between while working together to create a combined ranking of the nine movies to date. Spoiler alert: Rocky V is not our #1. March was a busy month at the box office. While The Batman took most of the commercial and critical kudos, Nick and Collin got to see plenty of other movies as well. We dive into those that stuck with us, those that didn't, and even a few we're trying hard to forget. Nick and Collin also take a moment to reflect on the career of Bruce Willis. Following this week's surprise announcement regarding the action hero stepping away from his career, Nick and Collin dissect how he changed the action genre and moviemaking as an industry. Aside from the slap heard around the world, the 94th Academy Awards were filled with a plethora of other highs and lows. This broadcast featured the return of the hosts, the first Best Picture win by a streaming service, as well as an unorthodox approach to the ceremony which saw eight categories pre-recorded and spliced into the live broadcast as well as two fan-voted categories. Some of it worked, some of it certainly didn't. Listen to us breakdown the broadcast and give our thoughts and opinions on the format and this year's winners. For a brief moment, Sundance 2022 looked like it was going to function as a return to in-person festival moviegoing for the entire industry. Naturally, nature had other plans in store, so the entire festival had to move online for a second straight year. On this episode of The MovieBabble Podcast, Nick is joined by Spencer Henderson to talk through the highs and lows of their personal festival viewing experiences. Remake cynicism begone, Steven Spielberg's retelling of West Side Story is pretty damn good. The titan filmmaker managed to inject some classic Spielberg Magic™ into the musical that we've been missing in film for some time, which often helps the film overcome some of its plot and character issues. Brennan and Nick talk about what worked, how it compares to the 1961 original, and why Ansel Elgort is a major shrug at best. Elsewhere, Nick discusses why he loves Red Rocket and its reprehensible lead character, and they both take some time to gush about Jane Campion and The Power of the Dog. They talk what they liked about the certainly unique take on the MCUs most obscure protagonists to date as well as Zhao's direction. They also dive into those post-credits scenes because they love a good tease. Next, Collin and Nick discuss the royal family and why their lack of Royal Fam trivia makes no difference to how great of an experience Kristen Stewart and Spencer are. This weekend saw the release of the highly anticipated, James-Gunn-directed film The Suicide Squad. Despite an arguably soft opening at the box office amid concerns of the Delta variant, the film has proven to be a streaming hit on HBO Max. Between Zack Snyder's Justice League in March, and now The Suicide Squad, DC has decidedly made this year the year of the "do-over" and audiences are all the better for it. Now, how exactly does it compare to the 2016 film that, while poorly received by critics and audiences alike, seemed to take over pop culture in a big way, even if for a brief moment? This week saw a heap of controversy roll through Film Twitter, starting with the news that Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for lost profits due to the release of Black Widow on Disney+ at the same time as it hit theaters. The actress seemingly began a wave that may have repercussions for all involved in the moviemaking business, especially those below the line. This week also saw the release of the closest thing COVID can produce similar to a blockbuster, Jungle Cruise which opened strong in theaters and at home. It was joined by the releases of Stillwater, Nine Days, and The Green Knight. We round out the podcast diving into the latter and contrasting it with an adaptation of the same poem, 1984's Sword of the Valiant. This week saw the competitive release of Snake Eyes and Old, two films that raked in nearly the same amount of money but one is a solid success and the other is a considerable flop. Snake Eyes proves that the GI: Joe franchise still can't get itself off the ground while Old proves that Shaymalan's betting on himself is a solid strategy. Nick, John, and Collin discuss the likes, dislikes, and wackiness of both new films. But who cares about new films when you can talk about old ones? The tenth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise roared onto the scene this weekend with a pandemic high of $70 million. The shark may have been jumped, but the franchise is giving the box office the jolt it's needed to get the summer movie season rolling. Brennan and Collin discuss reactions to the film and the craziness of the franchise as a whole. We also share some thoughts and warm fuzzies over Luca, Pixar's latest delightful adventure. For this week's Babble Movie Club, Brennan selected 1992's Candyman. We dissect the original in anticipation of Nia Dacosta's reboot/sequel. In the Heights, the first in a slew of musicals this year, arrived this past week in theaters and on HBO Max. Its arrival helped create the first genuinely competitive box office in nearly a year and a half. Brennan and Collin talk about why it might not be underperforming, as well as their reactions to the film. Additionally, they talk about Disney+'s attempts to make Wednesdays the new Fridays with Loki. Where does it fall in their rankings of MCU television? Later they discuss the end of Collin's Disney Animation rewatch and what he gleaned from his 84 year trip through the Walt Disney canon. And because there's never enough discourse over a Disney property, Brennan and Collin watch 2011's Winnie the Pooh for this week's Babble Movie Club. All this, some Bud Luckey trivia, and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast. Zack Snyder is once again here to save cinema with Netflix's Army of the Dead. Snyder's return to the zombie genre is flawed but fun, although Brennan and Collin disagree on how much of either it actually is. We break down our reactions to the film and the franchise that it has already spawned, as well as a pitch for the Dave Bautista/Jason Momoa buddy comedy we've all been waiting for. We also discuss the release of Blast Beat, a film that Collin had the pleasure of checking out at Sundance 2020. We round out this podcast with a trip down the rabbit hole, this time the Babble Movie Club takes a look back at 1951's Alice in Wonderland. Brennan and Collin discuss the merits and legacy of this film as it captures the best of Disney's animation and vocal talents. Spiral led a crowded(!) weekend at theaters, but despite Chris Rock's best efforts, the film isn't anywhere close to a good entrant in the Saw franchise. Similarly, Netflix's The Woman in the Window is a big ol' turkey. But at least our lord and savior Zack Snyder is here to save the day. On this week's installment of Babble Movie Club, Collin and Brennan examine Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead and compare it to George A. Romero's original from 1978. Are movie theaters back?!?! Godzilla vs. Kong has dominated around the world at the box office thus far, grossing almost as much as Godzilla: King of the Monsters did in its entire theatrical run in only two weeks. Does this point to theaters coming back in a BIG way post-pandemic? Along with the financials, Brennan and Nick talk about the glorious stupidity within the film itself. Zack Snyder's original vision became complete through HBO Max, and Brennan and Collin (plus a surprise guest) are here to talk about it in all of its 4:3 glory. Though #TheSnyderCut isn't the only topic of discussion, as we continue with our latest segment and discuss Studio Ghibli's Grave of the Fireflies.
