The Zwift SBS Cycling podcast crew this week reviews Week 2 of the 2017 Vuelta a España, we look at the upcoming World Championships with an exclusive chat with Martin Barras (High Performance Coach for Cycling Australia) all the way from Italy, and what is really going on at Cannondale-Drapac?
Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP We're right in the middle of the Aussie cycling summer so - keeping with the local theme - for Talking Luft I caught up with my riding buddy Pat Drapac, down in Adelaide's central market during the Tour Down Under. If you've not had a listen to the podcast about the adventure that Pat and I had riding across from Melbourne to Adelaide, then go and give it a listen! Pat's a great talker with a huge range of interests, and he's also one of Melbourne's most well-known cycling figures. He's been a rider, a team owner, a team sponsor and as well as many other things, he's the son of Michael Drapac, whose team I began racing for in 2006, and who went all the way to the podium of the Tour de France as a sponsor of the Cannondale Drapac team. Like me, Pat is a child of the nineties and like me, he's big into his food, so he's just about the perfect guest for Talking Luft! What I loved about Pat's interview was hearing just how much he goes against the grain of a lot of current riders. He's also a former chef, so he has the booze questions pretty well covered too! It's a refreshing listen, and an interesting take on the sport and the surrounding culture. So, check it out, and enjoy. Cheers! Mitch
Toms is a world tour pro in his 5th year with Trek Segafredo. Toms raced for various French Continental teams for 3 years before coming to North America where he raced for the Hincapie team for 2 seasons then turned pro with Cannondale Drapac after some amazing seasons in the North American scene. Toms then moved to Trek from Cannondale where he's been since and is now in his 7th season in the world tour.
Phil Gaimon is a former World Tour road cyclist who rode for Garmin-Sharp and Cannondale-Drapac among others. While racing, he blogged for VeloNews, Bicycling, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated and wrote the popular book Pro Cycling on $10 a Day (2014). He retired at age 30, expecting to hang up his race bike and put on some cookie-weight. He continued writing (Draft Animals (2017)), but through a series of unexpected twists, launched his wildly successful YouTube show “Worst Retirement Ever,” which follows his pursuit of breaking hill climb records all over the world. In this conversation, Phil and Payson discuss his decision to quit pro cycling early, how he got his start on YouTube after a marketing job fell through, stealing STRAVA KOM's from dopers, racing Fabian Cancellara for charity after an internet spat, and how he became the final authority on cookie ratings on Instagram.
We discuss the worst conditions we've raced in and how to deal with it, cycling style and The Rules, and Cannondale-Drapac's crowdfunding of their team.Episode LinksiTunes (Subscribe! “The biggest factor in who made it to the next level wasn’t talent or work ethic. It was a willingness to keep plugging away through all the hard times.” Phil Gaimon Let's talk about doping.Throw cycling into the conversation and emotions are sure to run hot. It's an emotional subject for reasons both obvious and obscure. A flashpoint that divides loyalties, pitting our innate sense of fairness against our natural impulse to forgive.I have opinions on the matter. But my perspective is far from set in cement. Because I am aware that it's formed from the sidelines, as an observer of a very insular subculture beyond my direct experience, and to which I am not privy. Unless you were actually there — in the unfortunate and precarious position so many athletes across so many sports abruptly find themselves — my opinion is that we should not be so quick to judge.Everybody thinks they would make the right choice. I certainly do. But that's just projection. The truth is that you don't actually know what you would do. Connecting with this impulse helps me empathize with those who went astray. Is that a good thing? I honestly don't know.Phil Gaimon did make the right choice. A somewhat polarizing figure in the cycling community, today he tells the tale.Overcoming childhood obesity to achieve his dream of riding professionally, over the course of his professional cycling career Phil competed on several established domestic teams like Jelly Belly, Bissel and Optum-Kelly Benefit as well as high profile, international UCI teams like Garmin Sharp in 2014 and Cannondale–Drapac in 2016 before hanging up his bib shorts at the end of last year. Well, not exactly, but I'll get to that part in a minute.Along the way he has raced and trained with the best. Now he writes about his experiences, coming clean on what transpired behind cycling's shrouded curtain with wit and a healthy dose of comedic self-deprecation. He is the author of Pro Cycling On $10 A Day* and Ask a Pro*. His newest tome, Draft Animals: Living The Pro Cycling Dream (Once In A While) — an entertaining memoir about achieving his childhood dream of riding pro on the World Tour and what happened to him when he achieved it — hits bookstores October 10, 2017.When he's not writing books, Phil is an active blogger and contributor to various cycling publications like Velo News. He also hosts The Peloton Brief Podcast and is the founder of Phil’s Cookie Fondo – a series of cycling adventures between 32 and 113 miles taking place October 15 that showcases Malibu’s great climbs (and apparently involves a lot of cookies).Back to the bib shorts. He didn't exactly hang them up. In fact, Phil has spent the better part of the last year pursuing what he calls The Worst Retirement Ever — an endeavor in which he is attempting to clock the fastest-ever rec... Question: is Chris Froome unbeatable? Whit and Joe ponder the issue in context of the last week of the Vuelta Espana, where Froome has so far repelled all challenges to his lead, but is starting to show the barest hints of the strain of defending the red jersey for two plus weeks. Froome’s dominance stems from that of his Sky team, and Whit and Joe also look at whether that’s good for the sport of pro cycling. Should the sport modernize with a salary cap? Would that save the Cannondale-Drapac team? And Whit, ever the sunny optimist, sketches out a scenario where Cannondale folding actually ends up being not entirely bad for American racing. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton! Let’s see how it turns out.

Brwydr dosbarthiad cyffredinol y Vuelta, dyfodol bregus Cannondale-Drapac a phennod newydd yng ngyrfa Scott Davies. Digon i'w drafod yn y bennod hon!
