Three Attributes of Cyclists - Ep 137 In this night time walking adventure I speak about the three characteristics a cyclist must have in order to express their highest potential as an athlete. The episode is inspired by conversations with Jonathan Vaughters about what it takes to be good. His list included 1) Marathoner 2) F1 Driver. He has a video about this in our Team EF Coaching education portal.  JV says you have to have a big engine, and be able to drive a bike. I agree, and I would offer a 3rd item to this list: 3D chess.  Meaning: a cyclist can't just corner like a maniac and drop watt bombs. They have to selectively, intelligently choose when to utilize their strength. This is what differentiates cycling from Marathon running or swimming events: cycling is a sport that is heavily influenced by the size of the athlete's engine, but it is also influenced heavily by physics and terrain [read: mostly draft effect and hills] which change the weight of the variables that influence performance.  My gripe with many modern coaches and athletes is that they over train the engine and neglect the other aspects. Even worse, they really only focus on one particular aspect of the engine. This makes you one dimensional and opens numerous possibilities for race day failure.  These concepts don't only apply to competitive elite or World Tour riders; they apply to all riders at every level.  A bit of artwork is included to help you conceptualize these ideas as I am teaching them.  Do you agree? Think I am wrong? Did I miss a major attribute? Comment and let the world know.  LINKS:  Team EF Coaching ►► https://www.teamefcoaching.com Peter Defty Episode on YouTube ►► https://youtu.be/PrPdlT3apT8

RadioCycling will be offering three episodes a week during the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Our first Tour-themed show, backed by our new sponsor Saddle Skedaddle, offers a blitz of the latest news going into the world's greatest race.We start with the latest on transfer dealings at Ineos Grenadiers, where there's a lot of outward traffic but very little movement in the other direction. With Tao Geoghegan-Hart, Ben Tulett, Pavel Sivakov, Carlos Rodríguez and now Dani Martínez all heavily linked with moves away from the British super squad, we examine the Ineos transfer strategy. Is there a big signing in the offing?EF Education-EasyPost have named what's arguably their strongest ever line-up for the Tour. Team boss Jonathan Vaughters tells us about their strategy going into the race, why he's expecting team leader Richard Carapaz to come good over the next three weeks, and also offers some suggestions on how to improve rider safety in the wake of Gino Mäder's tragic death at the Tour of Switzerland.Fears that Tadej Pogačar might be forced to sit out the Tour after breaking a wrist in April have been allayed and the two-time champion is fit and raring to go. UAE Team Emirates head coach Iñigo San Millán has played a vital role in Pogačar's return to peak fitness and tells us about Pogačar's training regime during this period and also the UAE leader's love of a chocolate mousse. Most of the pre-Tour talk has, inevitably, been about the GC battle, but what's in store for the clash of the sprinting titans?  We turned to Marcel Kittel for an expert's analysis of this contest. Winner of 14 Tour stages, Kittel also reveals why Mark Cavendish was always his biggest rival and who he expects to emerge as this year's Tourminator of the bunch sprints.Last weekend fan favourite Fred Wright took a highly emotional first professional win in the British road championship. The Londoner lifts the lid on what he expects to be an action-packed race for his Bahrain Victorious team, which will be aiming to contend on all fronts.Support the show

This is the tenth anniversary of one of the closest grand tours of all-time, decided by just 16 seconds after a two-week tussle between two very different riders. The Canadian Ryder Hesjedal and the Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez took turns wearing the maglia roas as if they were playing a game of pass the parcel. It was an intriguing clash of styles too – the patient diesel versus the jack-in-the-box. In this two part Kilometre 0, Lionel Birnie speaks to the boss of the Garmin-Barracuda team Jonathan Vaughters, first-time sports director Charly Wegelius, and one of the key support riders Christian Vande Velde about how they pulled it off. Long-time friends, training partners, and competitors, Jonathan Vaughters and Colby Pearce have a deep racing history and relationship. With decades of experience in pro cycling, they have gained many insights about training, coaching, and the trajectory of the sport. Colby and JV first discuss their early training techniques, taught to them by their first cycling coach, Adrie Van Diemen, a Dutch exercise physiologist now with UAE Team Emirates. Many of the techniques are now considered to be standard practice. The pair reminisce about how they were ahead of their time, in many ways, even though they didn't realize it. Vaughters, who has coached many pro cyclists over the years, then gives examples of experiments gone right—and wrong—and how certain training regimens should be applied to certain types of athletes. He also openly discusses the conflict of interest in coaching athletes while also serving as their team manager. The discussion then turns to the finer details of cycling technique, including a detailed explanation of how crank length affects a rider's ability to climb, sprint, and win. JV even describes the time he swapped cranks behind the back of his former team manager, Johan Bruyneel. Next, the conversation turns to Rigoberto Urán, who finished second in the 2017 Tour de France. The Colombian's diet at that year's race included bananas and… bananas. Vaughters uses that example to illustrate how the natural and simple solution oftentimes bests all of the “advanced” nutrition expertise in the world—and how athletes often discover what works best for them and “solve their own equation.” That, and much more, in today's episode of “Cycling in Alignment.” REFERENCES Book: “One-Way Ticket: Nine Lives on Two Wheels” https://www.amazon.com/One-Way-Ticket-Nine-Lives-Wheels/dp/0143134140 Coach Adrie Van Diemen http://www.webtrainer.com/nl/

It's been a strange year for Alex Howes, as it has been for everyone. The U.S. national champion hardly got to race in the jersey he won last year — but since nationals was canceled, he gets to wear it again until the 2021 nationals. Howes also flew to South Africa to race Cape Epic as part of EF Pro Cycling's alternate program that puts its pro roadies in adventure races. But... that race never happened. The soon-to-be-father recently got back to racing. On this episode of Put Your Socks On, Howes talks about his long road with Jonathan Vaughters' team — the only pro squad he has raced for. Even before turning pro, Howes races on Vaughters' junior development team, TIAA-CREF. Also on this episode, Bobby picks Howes' brain at length for gravel gear tips...

The Giro d'Italia is in full swing, and what a race it's been. The unpredictable nature of the Italian grand tour this year reminds Bobby and Gus of another remarkable year, where Ryder Hesjedal took and lost and took the pink jersey, finally winning the overall in a nail biter of a final time trial. So we rang up Ryder to hear about that year at the the Giro, and to get some insight into his interesting career in professional cycling. Ryder got his start in bike racing with mountain biking in his native Canada in the ’90s. By the time he was 15, he was racing the MTB world championships, and his trajectory just continued from there, for a time blending mountain and road racing. A stint with the Rabobank development road team led to a contract with U.S. Postal Service — which he was still using as training for mountain biking en route to the Olympics. After some trial and error, Ryder found his sweet spot with Jonathan Vaughters' Slipstream team, where he enjoyed being a driving force in the scrappy upstart squad. An excellent 2011 year saw him finish seventh overall in the UCI rankings, and with the team's directive to focus on the Giro for 2012. Here is the story of how he did exactly that. It's time to Put Your Socks On.

The pair reminisce about how they were ahead of their time, in many ways, even though they didn’t realize it. Vaughters, who has coached many pro cyclists over the years, then gives examples of experiments gone right—and wrong—and how certain training regimens should be applied to certain types of athletes. He also openly discusses the conflict of interest in coaching athletes while also serving as their team manager.  The discussion then turns to the finer details of cycling technique, including a detailed explanation of how crank length affects a rider’s ability to climb, sprint, and win. JV even describes the time he swapped cranks behind the back of his former team manager, Johan Bruyneel.  Next, the conversation turns to Rigoberto Urán, who finished second in the 2017 Tour de France. The Colombian’s diet at that year’s race included bananas and… bananas. Vaughters uses that example to illustrate how the natural and simple solution oftentimes bests all of the “advanced” nutrition expertise in the world—and how athletes often discover what works best for them and “solve their own equation.” That, and much more, in today’s episode of “Cycling in Alignment.” REFERENCES Book: “One-Way Ticket: Nine Lives on Two Wheels” https://www.amazon.com/One-Way-Ticket-Nine-Lives-Wheels/dp/0143134140 Coach Adrie Van Diemen http://www.webtrainer.com/nl/ Colby’s Site: http://www.colbypearce.com/ Email: CyclingInAlignment@FastLabs.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cyclinginalignment/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/CyclinginAlign_ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cyclinginalignment-110271017351743

As you might expect this podcast solely focuses on the Coronavirus and its effect on professional cycling.  We're going to hear from team bosses Jonathan Vaughters, and Matt White, as well as our European Editor Stephen Farrand, who lives in Italy, and Sophie Smith, who made it home from the UAE and is safely back in Australia.  But we start with Stephen Farrand and we discuss the impact of Covid-19 on the Italian race scene and how teams and the Italian public at large are struggling to cope. This was recorded just a few hours after RCS announced that Strade Bianche would not take place this weekend. Our interview with Jonathan Vaughters from EF Pro Cycling was conducted on Thursday evening but Paris-Nice was set to go ahead and EF were down to ride.  Vaughters talks about how teams are trying to understand the quickly evolving situation and the various playbook scenarios they are having to consider when it comes to race selection, rosters and riders' health.  Matt White's Mitchelton-Scott team was one of the first, if not the first, to announce that their men's and women's teams would be halting all racing with immediate effect. That as before Strade Bianche was canceled. In this interview White talks about the wellbeing of his riders, and the logistical stresses put on a team. He uses the example of the recent developments at the UAE Tour as an example.  Finally, we hear from Australian journalist Sophie Smith on the dramatic twists that took place at the UAE Tour last week. Some teams and riders are still stuck in the UAE and will be there until mid-March but the situation for around 72 hours was fraught and tense, to say the least. In this interview with Smith, we take you through how the situation unfolded.   To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here.  Our latest competition gives you the chance to win one of two musettes. Jonathan Vaughters was a member of the famed USPS pro cycling team when his teammate Lance Armstrong won the first of a record-breaking seven straight Tours de France. While fans were awed and inspired by the victories, Jonathan knew there was something else fueling those wins: performance enhancing drugs — something the entire team was using, including himself. The deception weighed heavy on his conscience, and Jonathan found himself at a crossroads: live with the lie or come clean and become a traitor to his friends, colleagues, and the most powerful man in cycling, Lance Armstrong.

The previous record holder was Jonathan Vaughters, who is currently Danielson's manager. In 2004, Danielson had an uneventful stint on the Italian UCI ProTeam Fassa Bortolo, missing the early spring campaign because of visa problems. Since Discovery Channel disbanded in 2008, Danielson has been part of the Garmin-Chipotle team.2010Danielson started the season by finishing twelfth at both the Tour Méditerranéen and the Tour du Haut Var.

All you have to do is head to their website and use the code: cyclingnews20. This deal is in place throughout all of August. We'll pick the two lucky winners later this month.  We start with Jonathan Vaughters and a similar theme to last week's transfer special. In this interview, Vaughters talks about what he looks for in a rider, the different criteria at play and how he has build EF Education First. It's an eye-opening journey into the complex dynamics in play when it comes to structuring for the future and balancing both long term and immediate goals. There's also a cameo from Alex Howes, after we caught up with the US national road champion at the Tour of Utah.  Our final interview is with the well-respected French journalist Pierre Carrey who is a regular for Liberation. Carrey gives us the rundown on the Tour de l'Avenir, which starts Thursday. The ten-day race is viewed as mini Tour de France with a raft of U23 riders and future stars taking part. We talk about the relevance of the race, how team managers use it as a hunting ground for talent; how the style of racing compares to the WorldTour, and who to watch over the next fortnight.    Sponsor message Born in the Italian Dolomites, Sportful has been making athletes faster, more efficient and better protected since 1972.
