This week we're talking to the one and only Robyn Hitchcock about his 50-year career, his new album The Confuser, and his biggest electric-band tour in decades. We also talk about how REM and MTV's “120 Minutes” helped his US profile back in the '80s, his current Nashville-centered touring band, and working with his wife Emma Swift, producers Paul Fox, John Leckie, Jon Brion, and Dave Rawlings. Plus: polka dots, Robyn's new memoir Stranded in the Future, five records he thinks everyone should own, and lots more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein

From wearing polka dots to preparing 12 round fruits, these practices may lack scientific proof, yet they remain deeply rooted in Filipino culture as symbols of hope, prosperity, and protection as the new year begins.

"Niki. Kusama. Murakami. Love You For Infinity" - so heißt die neue Ausstellung im Sprengel Museum Hannover.

In this episode, we introduce the concept of whimsimod to explain the recent trend of pattern-printed and adorably tailored fashion among sensitive indie starlets and Instagram baddies alike. In the process of unpacking this polished yet playful re-envisioning of femininity, we discuss the aesthetic shift from “kiki” to “bouba” over the past year, the history of girly youth diffusion lines like RED Valentino and Blugirl, the current hemline crisis and the accompanying novelty hosiery movement, seminal lady designers including Carolina Herrera and Kate Spade, and more. We also provide a forensic cultural history of the polka dot throughout the decades. The Princess of Wales just reminded us all that polka dots are, in fact, a power move.At Westminster Abbey for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Kate stepped out in a very familiar—and very fabulous—outfit: the same black-and-white polka-dot Alessandra Rich dress she wore to the Order of the Garter in 2023. Yes, the dress that had people comparing her to Eliza Doolittle in *My Fair Lady*Kate is once again proving her title as the Queen of Rewears. As British Vogue's Emily Chan put it, she's turned outfit recycling into something of a royal superpower. Also, A new rose has been named in honour of the Princess of Wales, celebrating both her advocacy for the healing power of nature and her ongoing support for cancer care. *Catherine's Rose*, a coral-pink floribunda with a rich fragrance reminiscent of Turkish Delight and mango, was unveiled by the Royal Horticultural Society on Thursday. The flower, bred by Harkness Roses, will be available to the public by pre-order. Each sale will include a £5 donation to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, aiding the hospital where Her Royal Highness underwent chemotherapy treatment last year. The funds raised will contribute to the creation of a national training programme in prehabilitation and rehabilitation for clinical teams, aiming to help cancer patients live well both during and after treatment. The RHS explained that the naming of *Catherine's Rose* was not only to honour her public service, but also to raise awareness of the vital role nature plays in physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.Only 15,000 *Catherine's Rose* plants will be made available in 2025, with bare root roses priced at £29.99 and potted plants at £34.99. Orders may be placed now for delivery in autumn next year, with additional availability planned for spring and autumn 2026.The rose, which is said to thrive in borders, large containers, or as part of a hedge, has also been specially cultivated to attract pollinators.Get the show without ads. Happy Full House Friday Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. Today, we conclude Jesse's Musical Career Journey Series, with Full House S8E7: On The Road Again, which aired on November 8, 1994. In this episode when Danny finds out that D.J. is secretly dating the guitarist in Jesse's new band, Danny forbids her to continue. I was not a fan of this episode and really don't like the music that Jesse makes with his new band Hot Daddy and the Monkey Puppets. Not to mention the outfits or style he's going for with this new band is utterly atrocious. Absolutely can't stand Viper, he's wrong for DJ, and it's not just because he's not Steve. He seems so much older than DJ, I mean she's still in high school, even though Steve was in college when DJ and he broke up. He's too wild, and (spoiler alert) he actually breaks up with her when he feels things are going too fast for him. Jesse realizes his wild days are behind him when he takes Becky and the boys on a gig with him. He wants to relive his glory days (pre-Becky and the boys) days of rock n' roll that he had with the Rippers in 1987. He checks the band along with Becky and the boys into a grungy, moldy, outdated motel, that is so bad, it would make Norman Bates, inwardly cringe. Times have changed and so has he. He makes so many "I'm an old man" jokes, it gets old real quick. I'm like "dude, you're not even 30 yet", he complains more about his age in this episode than he does in Fuller House, claiming he's still got it, for someone in his 50's. Jesse and the band are in for a shock when he meets the owner of the club who is expecting Big Poppa and the Polka Puppies, not Hot Daddy and the Monkey Puppets. I couldn't help but picture golden retriever puppies dressed in lederhosen and barking in time to a polka song. Danny has a change of heart about Viper dating DJ when Viper steps up to help out Jesse (who fired him for dating DJ)when he is ordered to play polka music or vacate the venue. Turns out Viper was Tiny Hines in Big Hines and the Polka Dots as a kid. Jesse and the band don polka outfits and polka instruments and perform KISS's song "I Wanna Rock n' Roll All Night" Polka Style. Stephanie and Michelle try to figure out which of the Monkey Puppets that DJ is dating they see her talking to Mongo and assume she's with him. Umm, kids, Mongo is like 35 years old, that's gross. In fact that's just as or more so upsetting as her dating Viper. Mongo's like Danny's age. I hope you enjoy the podcast episode and have a great weekend! See you in August! Lance, JB, and George are joined by Johan Bruyneel to discuss the Tour's sixth stage, which saw Tadej Pogačar execute a perfect rope-a-dope on Jonas Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma, who made their first massive error of the race with their overly aggressive tactics. However, despite being dropped and losing the stage to Pogačar, Vingegaard was successful in taking the race lead from Jai Hindley, who cracked on the brutal Col du Tourmalet and lost serious time to the pre-race GC favorites (but is still well-placed for an eventual podium finish). Outside of the thrilling GC battle, the crew goes over Neilson Powless getting back into Polka Dots with a hard day in the breakaway and fatigue finally catching up to the formerly high-flying Mattias Skjelmose, before briefly previewing tomorrow's stage 7. What albums and songs are getting a lot of play on your Spotify or iTunes app currently? My guest would say that the music you put in heavy rotation comes down to your unique "listener profile."Her name is Susan Rogers, and she's a music producer-turned-neuroscientist as well as the co-author of This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You. Today on the show, Susan unpacks the seven dimensions of music and how they show up along a varying spectrum in every song. She explains how everyone has an individualized taste for the configuration of these dimensions, and that how closely a particular song aligns with this pattern of sweet spots accounts for whether you like it or not. Along the way, we discuss artists that exemplify these dimensions, how Frank Sinatra injected virility into his music, how part of your musical taste has to do with the way you prefer to move your body, and much more.Artists and Songs Mentioned in the EpisodePrince's Purple RainBarenaked LadiesThe ShaggsElla FitzgeraldThe RentalsThe KillersTame ImpalaSteven PageJohnny CashCakeJames Brown's "Hot Pants"Yes' "Roundabout"Pharrell Williams' "Happy"Carly Rae Jepson's "Call Me Maybe"Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool and Kind of BlueFrank Sinatra's first hit song "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" (1940) vs. "It Was a Very Good Year" (1965)Connect With Susan RogersThe This Is What It Sounds Like website, including the "Record Pull"Susan's faculty page
