Jeff Rosenkranz fixed income portfolio manager at Shelton Capital Management — manager of the Shelton Tactical Credit Fund — says that what investors are facing more than sticky inflation and interest rates is sticky uncertainty. That doubt has increased volatility, especially in individual companies, industries and sectors as proposed tariffs play out, but that turbulence represents new opportunities for credit buyers, especially in intermediate term corporate and high-yield bonds. David Trainer of New Constructs puts Spotify back in the Danger Zone, noting that a recent pop in the company's stock price has inflated to the point where valuations reflect revenues so unrealistic that a 50 percent haircut in the stock would be considered mild. Plus, Ted Rossman discusses a Bankrate.com study which shows that more than 80 percent of Americans spend money on at least one of six common financial vices (alcohol, lottery tickets, casino games, tobacco/cigarettes/e-cigarettes, sports betting, and marijuana/recreational cannabis), and Scott Davies, chief investment officer at CDAM, talks small-cap stocks in the Market Call.
From a humble bricklayer to building a $40 million honey empire, Scott Davies is living proof that with relentless determination and a never-say-die mentality, anything is possible. Scott's journey, which began with self-doubt and uncertainty, evolved into the story of an entrepreneur who overcame immense challenges to transform his business into what it is today. Now, his honey is stocked in over 500 Tesco stores across the UK, and his company proudly produces 25% of Britain's honey supply. This is not just a story of success, but also a heart warming tale of perseverance and personal growth. _______________ Sign up to Wise Business banking: https://wise.com/uk/business/?utm_source=secretleaders&utm_medium=audio&utm_campaign=Secret+Leaders_1H+2025&utm_content=Wise+Business Join Vanta and receive $1000 off: http://vanta.com/secretleaders Learn more about your ad choices. Introducing Scott Davies. He's the founder of Hilltop Honey, the 2nd largest honey brand in the UK with a turnover of £44mn selling over 13,000 tonnes of honey a year, the equivalent of 1000 double-decker buses. And while honey sales have been relatively stagnant for the last few years, Hilltop Honey has bucked the trend growing at an outstanding 22% a year. It's impressive. Scott grew up in a pretty low income family in the middle of Wales, got pretty average GCSEs, didn't go to university and only started the businesses because he slipped a disk down the coal yard. Aged 23 with a 5k overdraft, Scott was faced with a choice: start a dog walking business, sell sports equipment on Amazon or start his own honey brand. Lucky for us he did the latter, starting Hilltop Honey back in 2011 living with mum and dad, who now lend a hand in the factory. Look up ‘grit' means in the dictionary you'll find a picture of Scott there. He didn't pay himself for the first 3 years. They were on their last £400 when Holland & Barrett took a chance on the brand. And they've never taken on any investment. Now 13 years on, he has a market share of 12%, is expanding to the states and pays 130 people's mortgages every month. In this episode we talk about what resilience means, the power of being no.2 and the highs and lows along the road. Enjoy

Scott Davies, the founder of Hill Top Honey has built an incredible business with the combination of tenacity and a £5,000 bank loan. He was a bricklayer who hurt his back and decided to change tact and set up a honey business. He came on the Food Talk Show with Ollie Lloyd and Susie Warran-Smith many years ago, but alot has happened in the last 8 years. Hill Top Honey, based in Newtown Wales, now turns over £43 million and has more than 130 employees. He had to be patient at the beginning, paying himself tiny amounts, exhibiting at trade shows to get close to his consumers and ultimately living within his means. He got a local Welsh packaging agency to create his early designs for £500 and admits that he didn't even know what a brief was when he first started. He has taken a radical approach for a challenger brand where he has decided to be cheaper than the market leader and fundamentally better, on taste and method of production. Scott thinks too many brands splash the cash and waste money on getting people to buy their products once. He thinks he hasn't made a sale unless someone buys his brand twice. He is a committed employer and only recently got his B-Corp status to allow him to talk more meaningfully about their approach to business. As he says, it matters to him that his team can afford to live well, and in a small town, everyone knows how you run your business. The business recently did a big packaging refresh with Big Fish. He has waited this long because it is only now that he thinks the business is ready, as it knows where it is going and has the funds to do this. As the saying goes, it is often the tortoise that wins the race. Edited by Stella Gent
Craig Johnson, senior research analyst at Piper Sandler, says that the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Standard & poor's 500 and the Nasdaq Composite are all "trading at the very upper end of an 18-month trading range and this is not usually where you start a whole other leg higher," so he expects a correction back to about 4,600 on the S&P in the next six weeks. When that move is finished, Johnson expects the market to resume its upturn but then to settle into a "high-level trading range," which he says is typical of election years and that it amounts to a sideways move. In that environment, the market will recover from the correction, and then he notes that he thinks it will fizzle and go sideways. Also on the show, Wade Pfau, professor of retirement income at The American College of Financial Services, discusses the latest updated to his “Retirement Planning Guidebook," which center around "tax mapping" and how investors may want to rethink investment strategies in retirement with an eye on minimizing taxes using strategies most haven't considered before now. In the Market Call, Scott Davies, founder/chief investment officer at CDAM, talks about "fire and forget" investing.

THRILL OF THE HILL | Carbon and benchmarking carbon are here to stay, firmly embedded in the best practice for the farming community. With COP28 happening now, the need to decarbonise farming has never been clearer but how to do that in a sustainable manner remains a big question for many. Carbon calculators are designed to identify carbon emissions in a business, where they are happening, to provide insights for positive actions. Agrecalc has been one of Scotland's leading calculators and has seen widescale uptake since the days of the Beef Efficiency Scheme, but as the carbon story becomes more important, the ability to get reliable, detailed information on a farm's carbon footprint has never been more important and crucially, having confidence in the data to take steps to improve is hugely important. So regardless of which carbon calculator you are using, the time to count carbon is now.In this episode, Scott Davies, CEO of Agrecalc discusses the uptake of carbon auditing, the need for a scientific consensus of emissions and how they are calculated, the move to the cloud and the increased functionality that will allow, better, more accurate interpretation of farm results and a clearer pathway forward. Craig Callahan, founder and chief executive officer at the ICON Funds -- who correctly called the bottom of the pandemic-driven bear market in March 2020 -- says that there are signs that the stock market has been through the ringer, but it's not yet showing enough signs that it has reached a bottom. Callahan says the market is roughly at fair value, not nearly beaten up enough to create the kind of widespread bargains normally found at a market bottom. the way it typically would be in As a result, he is holding maximum cash, waiting for inflation to start to ease, which should key the market reaction that puts him back in a buying mood. Also on the show, Rich Compson, head of managed accounts at Fidelity Investments talks about "direct indexing" or personalized indexing, and how it is now available to average investors with much smaller account balances; and in the Market Call, Scott Davies, founder and chief investment officer at CDAM, talks about international value investing now.

Just how do you keep on top of innovation? Do you follow the trends, or help create them? In the world of beer, over time, much has changed and much has stayed the same. And one company that has played an integral role in the development of the brewing industry, as well the distilling sector is Briggs of Burton, the world's oldest and number one distilling and brewing design and engineering company. With a history dating back to 1732, they know a thing or two about helping brewers and distillers achieve their goals. So with that in mind our colleagues at our sister title, The Distillers Journal, sat down with the company to find our more. Because while spirit consumption around the world continues to grow, customers are demanding more, wanting to feel as good about the distillery as about the spirit they're drinking. Green credentials and sustainability platforms have grown in importance as much as quality and flavour. However, with the rise in fuel and raw material prices, distillers have to wonder…will they be able to meet their customers demands, while maintaining a healthy bottom line? Joining us for this episode from Briggs is Scott Davies who discusses some of the major issues and challenges facing the industry today and how Briggs of Burton is helping them to overcome them…

Working with EPIC Scott travels across the Football League talking to young players and warning them of the dangers of addictive behaviours.Other topics, such as peer pressure and the masculine environment are covered in this illuminating chat, Part 1, of a two Part episode.

He talks about his leadership style and in particular, leadership under stress. We talk about what it takes and what it means to build a sustainable organisation. And finally, we talk sales – how they win new clients and the language they use to do it. “The driver of this business is – how do we use tech for good and help Primary Care Services, Urgent Care Services improve and manage their workforce and their capacity and demand? How do we do that? And then we can worry about the monetisation of it afterwards.” Scott Davies This week on The Business of Healthcare: Scott's leadership and career journey to date. What the Nightingale App does. The difference in leadership styles. How to lead and be a leader under stress. What it means to build a sustainable organisation. How to win new clients. Breakfast heavyweights this week; we meet Liz Baker of Wilkins & Sons and Scott Davies from Hilltop Honey As producers of this show, we often take pleasure in arranging our recording days so that our presenters are drinking some sort of strong alcohol early in the morning. Maybe we've turned a new leaf now though, because we arranged a session which was quite breakfast themed…and this was recorded on a sunny London morning. Go us! It was good timing for Holly Shackleton, who joined for the first time as guest presenter. The Editor of the Speciality Magazine came to us on an empty stomach…shame on her. You don't need much introduction to our guests…Tiptree and Hilltop Honey are two brands which have cracked the supermarkets in UK and both are favourites of ours when it comes to a breakfast spread. We were delighted to chat to Liz Baker from Wilkins & Sons – makers of the Tiptree brand. They know what they're doing; they've been going since 1885, have survived two World Wars, a hurricane, and have even had a visit from The Queen. Like your jams and preserves…these guys are for you. Next up, there was a buzz around the studio…who can guess what we were talking about? That's right honey, we bee talking honey. We had Scott Davies of Hilltop Honey come to the studio to explain how he turned from ‘normal' jobs to be a beekeeper and the maker of some amazing honey products. We learned the difference between normal products and ‘Manuka Honey' but there was one taster which had Sue running for the water…
