Tsgabu Grmay on 12 years in the WorldTour and fostering talent in East Africa

Growing up in Ethiopia, Tsgabu Grmay was inspired to start riding by his father and older brother, who were both cyclists. As a teenager, he was selected to go to the UCI's World Cycling Centre in South Africa and signed with his first UCI team in 2012. Since then, he raced 12 years on the WorldTour with teams including Lampre-Merida, Trek-Segafredo, and Jayco-AlUla. He retired from road racing at the end of 2023, but joined Team Amani as a rider and coach. This year, he's on the roster for the Life Time Grand Prix. A lot of former WorldTour riders who turn to gravel are looking for a smooth offramp to retirement, or, at the very least, are hoping to professionalize the sport and bring more teams into the fold. But Tsgabu is fired up about all the things that make gravel different from road racing. He sat down with Payson in Girona this week to talk about his childhood in Ethiopia, the challenges he faced when he moved to Europe and joined the WorldTour, and why being on Team Amani and fostering cycling in East Africa is even more of a dream come true than racing the Tour de France.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

We're looking at motherhood in our February episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin. With Ellen Van Dijk's much-anticipated return from maternity leave on the horizon, we explore the growing trend of racers returning to the peloton post-baby. Rose Manley speaks to Lizzie Deignan, one of the first women to be supported by her team to a return to racing and her agent Emma Wade, as well as new mum and Uno-X rider Joss Lowden, former Trek-Segafredo rider Abi Van Twisk and former British champion Meg Backstedt (née Hughes). Rose is also joined by Orla Chennaoui and Denny Gray to look at the recent racing, most notably a rare debut win for the GOAT Marianne Vos at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Discussion descends into bickering as the team try to decide how well Lidl-Trek played their tactics at the race after finishing third and fourth. We also ponder Lotte Kopecky's recent transformation after showing off her climbing legs on the UAE Tour's Jebel Hafeet and wonder how that might affect a seemingly tense relationship with teammate Demi Vollering.

Despite being pipped into second, the Italian classic marked yet another chapter in Kopecky's extraordinary early season in which she has never finished lower than runner-up.  Rose Manley, Orla Chennaoui and Lizzy Banks discuss the race and its fallout, including the controversial disqualification of Kristen Faulkner for the wearing of a continuous glucose monitor.  Rose also speaks to Puck Pieterse, one of the unlikely stars of Strade Bianche. Cyclo-cross racer Pieterse finished fifth in her first ever Women's World Tour road race. She explains her approach to having fun on the bike and why we won't be seeing her at any more road races this season. The team also talk about a less acrimonious team one-two finish at Trofeo Alfredo Binda. Last month's interviewee Shirin van Anrooij took the win there, followed by her Trek-Segafredo teammate Elisa Balsamo. Orla closes the show with a beautiful tribute to our deeply missed friend Richard Moore, who passed away a year ago. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Supersapiens and Science in Sport. Rose Manley, Orla Chennaoui and Lizzy Banks discuss the first Women's World Tour race of the season – the Tour Down Under – which returns to the calendar for the first time since 2020. We also hear from brand new Australian National Champion Brodie Chapman about finally winning the race that kickstarted her cycling career. Back in 2018, Chapman had a full-time office job and was competing in her first ever UCI race when she made the final selection at the National Championships. Her sixth place finish saw her land a pro contract, a move to Europe and even victory in the Sun Tour of Annemiek Van Vleuten. Now she has joined one of the biggest teams in the world, Trek-Segafredo and is looking to both bolster their team of champions as well as pursue some of her own ambitions this year.  Fellow Trek-Segafredo recruit Amanda Spratt also had a stand out performance at the Tour Down Under. Her explosive climbing on stage three left The Cycling Podcast team speculating if she might not be taking a step down from race leadership after all.  Plus we have the latest news from the women's professional cycling scene including an update on the collapse of the B&B Hotels team and the agreement of a new title sponsor for the former Drops Cycling squad.  The Cycling Podcast Féminin is supported by Supersapiens and Science in Sport. For most directeurs sportifs, especially one who spent his most important years as a cyclist in Italy, taking and defending the maglia rosa might be a euphoric experience. It is indeed for Trek-Segafredo's Yaroslav Popovych, but, to him, Juan Pedro López's pink jersey may also feel more like a welcome distraction. In February, Russia declared war on Popovych's Ukraine, and three months on their bombs are still falling. Watching on from Italy, Popovych felt helpless – and yet soon swung into action. In this Kilometre 0, he tells Daniel about his extraordinary efforts to offer aid and in some cases salvation to his compatriots back home. Welcome to The Cycling Performance Club Podcast! In this day and age of power meters, advanced physiologic metrics, and emphasis on aerodynamics it is very easy to overlook other key components of cycling performance- such as the emotional state of the athlete. In this episode we discuss the importance of a cyclist's emotions when pursuing peak performance in the sport. To best facilitate the exploration of this topic we talked with Sport Psychologist Dr. Elisabetta Borgia. Dr. Borgia works for Trek-Segafredo's men and women teams and is the official team psychologist for the Italian Cycling Federation. Full-time sport psychologists are one of the newest additions to the pro cycling team performance staff roster so we were very excited to hear about her role and experiences working with these athletes. We also take a look at the details of how a specific type of therapy emerging in this space- dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) can apply to the performance of athletes of all levels.Guest panelist:Dr. Elisabetta Borgiahttp://elisabettaborgia.com/LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/elisabetta-borgia-17174b19/Twitter: @labettina2001Instagram: @elisabettaborgiaCo-hosts:Jason Boynton, Ph.D.boyntoncoaching.comCyrus Monkcyclistscientist.comProducer & co-host:Damian Rusesemiprocycling.comInstagram: @cyclingperformanceclubFacebook: @cyclingperformanceclubTwitter: @cyclingclubpodLinkedIn: The Cycling Performance Club PodcastReferences:Skills Training ManualEurosport InterviewCode Yellow

The Cycling Podcast Féminin returns to review the spring Classics campaign. Rose Manley and Orla Chennaoui are joined by Lionel Birnie as they each select their outstanding moments of the spring. Annemiek van Vleuten bookended her spring with victories in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Liège-Bastogne-Liège but she was outfoxed in several of the other classics. It was a spring of two halves for SD Worx, Trek-Segafredo found ways to win with Elisa Balsamo and Elisa Longo Borghini and Paris-Roubaix has evolved from a fledgling event to a full-blown Classic in the space of six months and two editions. Plus, we discuss the possibility of a women's edition of Milan-Sanremo being added to the calendar – although that should actually be re-added... Quinn Simmons is a professional road cyclist who rides for Trek-Segafredo. At just 20 years old, he is part of a new generation of American road cyclists achieving success in the WorldTour that the country has not seen in generations. He was the first junior male road race World Champion since Greg Lemond, and won the Tour de Wallonie overall in 2021. He's also achieved top results in the Vuelta a España  and the Strade Bianche, and was long-listed for the 2021 Tour de France. In this conversation, he and Payson talk about the driving ambition and competitive mindset that have rocketed him to success after his junior career. He talks about the influence of his family and the potential of his younger brother, Colby, who recently joined the Jumbo-Visma Development Team. They discuss his tumultuous relationship with the media at the beginning of his WorldTour career that left him suspended from the team for two months in 2020. He talks about how his view of the media and professional racing have shifted since then, and why he's more determined than ever to become World Champion. They also talk about his interest in another White Rim FKT attempt, setting a Leadville 100 course record, and his thoughts on gravel after crashing out of Unbound in 2021.
