I've had the opportunity to talk to a lot of great people during this season, and Professor Shane Miller of Mississippi State University has been incredibly generous with his time on multiple occasions. He and I catch up on the state of the debate about who came first to the Americas, what agriculture in the eastern United States looked like, and how to find really old dirt.Patrick's book is now available! On this episode of the podcast, Connor and David sit down and chat with veteran guests Drs. Jesse Tune and Shane Miller to discuss the recent LSE mounds paper. They first dive into how Jesse and Shane have been on the show multiple times, and that they always have an educated and constructive conversation. Beginning with an overview of Southeastern archaeology and mound history, they then dive into the mounds. The hosts and guests discuss how the paper was published by geologists in a journal that isn't known for archaeology. They also discuss how the dating and geology in the paper is a little odd. It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
ENCORE: Something's afoot. There is, yet again, another controversial preclovis find. This time, away from the West Coast and in New Mexico. The controversy surrounds human footprints found in White Sands National Park that are dated between 23 and 21 kya. To discuss these possible pre-Clovis footprints, we invited Dr. Jesse Tune and Dr. Shane Miller on the show to contextualize the data. We begin with an open discussion about the recent published report and try to understand what the researches found at the site. We then chat about their controversy, how it's hit the mainstream media, and what the ramifications of the repaint are for archaeology. The conversation then turns into a open dialogue about scientific biases, as well as the role of Indigenous oral traditions and their incorporation into scientific theories. Dr. Shane Miller is back on the podcast to talk about a new paper that just came out. The Hopewell airbust event, published about in Nature Scientific Reports, is believed to be a series of near-Earth comets that are hypothesized to have had impacts on cultures living around 1600 years ago (252-383 CE). We dive into this paper and discuss its argument, the pitfalls/questions we have about the paper and where we want to see the research go in the future. When you live a life to serve others and pursue a positive mindset, you can't help but have a great outlook on life. He is a positive motivator and an inspiration to everyone he comes into contact with! The Great King Shane Miller stops by the campgrounds to inspire us to be positive and pursue our best outcomes in life. Focus on your goals, what you want in life and don't let others steal your joy. A fitting message for this holiday season. Pick up a copy of his latest book Crying in the Shortcut, available on Amazon.
This week we talk to Shane Miller. Shane has been at the forefront of Zwift and PowerMeter testing and advice on YouTube. Thanks to Shanes 'Llama Lab Test', his advice to companies in the beta testing periods has been crucial to many companies when it comes to verification of data. Shane has a very accomplished race pedigree, from TT to Road in the Australian scene. He stopped racing in 2016 and focused more on Zwift and his YouTube Channel. Quoted by TACX as “having a huge influence in making indoor training exciting” – Shanes goal is to help people have a better experience training and racing with technology both indoors and out. In this episode, we are pleased to have both Lana Ruck and Ella Beaudoin back on our show. Ella was on Episode 2 and Lana was on Episode 16. Since Episode 37 Settlers of Cerutti with Dr. Shane Miller and Dr. Jesse Tune was such a hit, we wanted to have Ella and Lana return to the show to talk about some controversial topics within paleoanthropology. Lana and Ella discuss the site Lomekwi, which is an archaeological site in Kenya where ancient stone tools have been discovered dating to 3.3 million years ago, which make them the oldest ever found. They deconstruct the tools, the context of the site, and the dating of the artifacts. In E20, I chat with YouTube personality, Shane Miller aka GPLama. Shane is from Melbourne Australia and is known for his popular YouTube channel “GPLama”. If you're at all a cycling fan, and cruise YouTube you've no doubt come across videos from Shane Miller, aka GPLama. Shane's channel covers all things bike tech, but he has become a resident expert on everything in regards to power meters, Zwift and indoor training. Shane talks to me about how he went from an accomplished amateur cyclist, to making a business out of cycling tech news. Shane also pulls back the curtain to the Lama Lab and shows a back stage view of the lab, and just what goes into producing his YouTube videos, as well as where the name and logo of “GPLama” came from...I bet you will be as surprised as I was. Shane Miller is a contemporary artist based in Nashville who creates paintings with imagined-landscapes that evoke a powerful mix of dreams, memories, and nostalgia. Largely self-taught, Shane shifted away from working as a physical therapist assistant and a musician to become a full-time artist in 2016 via his growing reach on Instagram. In Episode 8, Shane talks about creating a life based on his passion for art and shares insights into some of his influences, painting techniques and his creative process. Shane Miller is @shane.artistry on Instagram and on the web at www.shaneartistry.com.
Dr. D. Shane Miller is not your average southern boy. Rather, he is one of the more accomplished archaeologists in the country for his age, and currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Middled Eastern Cultures at Mississippi State University. Shane started his career at the University of Tennessee where he got his undergraduate and his master's degree conducting his thesis at the Topper Site. He later completed his PhD at the University of Arizona, and unfortunately, helped direct a field school in Nashville, Tennessee in which David was a young student. There is always a Sith and his master. We talk about Shane‘s career, some fun field stories, and have an interesting discussion about the field of anthropology in general. It was a blast.
