Tony Conley wraps up his twelfth episode with a three-part interview of Michael J. (Mike) Nichols is one of the leading trial attorneys in the State of Michigan. He also co-authored a chapter update for the West Publication ‘‘Inside the Minds'' with Dr. Andreas Stolz, Ph.D., and Ted Vosk called ‘‘DUI Mathematics.'' Mike and attorney Jeremy Brehmer, Esq. then collaborated with Dr. Stolz on measurement uncertainty, limits of detection, and validation for the same publication. Mike has presented several times at national conferences for the National College for DUI Defense, the DUI Defense Lawyers of America, and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. The “West OWI Handbook” is now in its second decade! Mike Nichols is an adjunct professor at Western Michigan University's Thomas M. Cooley law school's Lansing campus, focusing on DUI Law and Practice and Forensic Evidence in Criminal Law. Mike Nichols is an active trial lawyer focusing on defending those accused of driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol. His recent successful cases include defending a man charged with 2nd Degree Murder for his second fatal accident in which he was driving and alcohol was in his system along with marijuana and other drugs (People v Hawk Berning). He secured a not guilty verdict in 30 seconds in a case involving a .14 breath alcohol content in East Lansing, teaming with retired contractor Dale Haverdink. Mr. Haverdink was the 120-day service technician for National Patent Analytical Systems (NPAS), the original manufacturer of the Datmaster DMT breath test device and he now consults with the Nichols Law Firm, PLLC. Mike successfully defended State Representative Cindy Gamrat, who was exonerated when District Court Judge Hugh B. Clarke (ret) dismissed all charges against her filed by former Attorney General Bill Schuette (this was a non-DUI case that the NLF took on because, as Mike told the press “this was a political stunt”). He also focuses on complex forensic issues and other limited litigation matters. For example, Mike Nichols defended the driver accused in what is believed to be the first-ever black box vehicular homicide case and won a not guilty in People v Wood. He is a founding member of the Nichols Law Firm, PLLC in East Lansing. The firm was launched by Mike and Wendy Schiller-Nichols in 2006 while Mike was co-counsel that year on one of the most notorious murder trials in Michigan history, People v Holland. Mike is an active member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) since 2000, serving on the Rules and Laws (legislative committee). He was a CDAM Trial College Faculty member in 2010 and 2011. Mike helped launch the Michigan Association of OWI Attorneys (MIAOWIA) in 2012. Mike and Wendy live in East Lansing and are practicing Catholics and members of St. Thomas Aquinas/St. John Student Center Parish. They have 2 kids (Lauren and Christian) in college and a 3rd daughter, Morgan, still at home. He is a proud graduate of Michigan State University and was thrilled to give Cassius Winston, one of the greatest Spartans of all time, his first job “my best lawyering was convincing him to go into something other than the law.” Why are we still guessing? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Thank you to Benjamin Robinson and Motor City Skyline's music open.spotify.com/track/7y23KC54uZ…fPSoq_BrEnoS9kUw

Rob Phinisee has had an interesting, and in may ways contradictory, three years in Bloomington.• He arrived as a headline member of one of the most celebrated IU recruiting classes of the post-Knight era … but is now the only one left and still hasn't played in an NCAA Tournament game.• He burst onto the scene as a freshman point guard with the kind of production that gave IU fans dreams of the next Yogi … but has struggled to recapture that efficiency and consistency since.• He's earned a reputation as a clutch shooter with a handful of memorable shots that decided games … but has been a part of three straight backcourts that notoriously couldn't shoot the ball well enough to space the floor for talented interior scorers.• His IU teams have struggled to just get their head above water in Big Ten play … but notched three straight wins against top-10 Michigan State teams. It hasn't really made a lot of sense. But what does seem to make sense, at least IU fans hope, is that Rob and the entire IU program will have a chance to be reborn under the direction of a new staff and with a rebuilt roster. In this wide-ranging conversation with Rob we discuss the many contradictory elements of his time at IU and look forward to what his fourth season may bring. Among the topics we get into:• How he's approaching his option to play a fifth year• That time he scored 50 points in a high school game … and could have scored more• Why he chose to leave Lafayette for Bloomington• What Indiana needs to do to finally beat Purdue again• The ups and downs of the Marquette and Arkansas games freshman year• The game-winner against Butler and the anointing of “Big Shot Rob”• Hypotheses for why he's been able to come through more consistently in clutch situations than regular ones• The ongoing relationship he developed with the young man who wrote him a letter after the Butler game• What guarding Cassius Winston was like• The toughest players he's had to guard (his final answer on this one will stun you)• What he learned about the impact of crowds during the COVID season• What the experience of playing for Archie Miller was like• The role does he expect to play this season• What will be different about Indiana's defensive approach this season• What he wants to do after his basketball playing career is overAnd so much more. We cover a ton while reliving some of his most memorable moments as a Hoosier.

Here are our top five takeaways from the July 2021 Nashville Card Show: Full blog here - https://nooffseason.com/the-top-5-tak... 1. People are helpful and open-minded. 2. Card Shows are more valuable business lessons than school. 3. Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. 4. Be weary of price stickers. 5. SGC Could Be King. The hobby is alive and well. We saw people invigorated by sports cards. We thought there might be 20-30 people at Lighthouse Christian School in Antioch. Instead, there were ~150-200 all day long, and many kids. A big shout out to Tri-Star Cards. Two young teenagers and their dad had a very well organized, size-able collection ranging from a $0.50 box all the way up to $1k+ slabs and a Panini Noir Basketball break they were selling slots for. These young men were not only impressive from a card collection standpoint, but clearly were honorable young businessmen, talking to Max and I for a long time, sharing their story, discounting their cards for us, and even dropping me a free Cassius Winston rookie card since I'm a huge Michigan State fan. Everyone was interested in a free pack of Panini Megacracks Soccer from Spain (La Liga) and was willing to learn who to collect from that set from Max and I. The amount of currently untraceable transactions at card shows are a sign that eBay is far from the only place that cards are changing hands, which is amazing for the hobby and the business of the hobby moving forward. The Nashville Card Show is free to attend, is typically twice a month and I highly recommend it. For more information on the Nashville Card Show, following them on Twitter at @nashcardshow.
