The Lakers are likely to have Rui Hachimura tonight when they face the Rockets in Houston. They might have Anthony Davis, who sat out the second half of Monday's loss to Miami. They might have Jaxson Hayes, who missed the entire game on Monday. They won't have Jared Vanderbilt or Gabe Vincent, for sure. So maybe the Lakers will be significantly more whole than they were on Monday... or maybe they won't. That's been the story of the season so far for the Lakers, who haven't been awful, but haven't been able to get themselves into a groove, either, thanks in part to a very challenging early season schedule, some very poor performances for a few games (looking at you, Austin Reaves... though with less frustration now that things seem to have turned around) and major injury issues that have robbed the Lakers of half of the rotation. That's the context for tonight's game against a very competent Rockets team, playing .500 ball at 3-3 and featuring a starting lineup (VanVleet, Green, Brooks, Sengun, Smith Jr.) that is well above water as a unit, in terms of net rating. This game, which looked like maybe one of the easy ones in this brutal stretch of games, isn't. The Lakers will need to bring it to avoid a 3-5 start, with the Suns in Phoenix looming on Friday. This, as much as anything, could be what pushes Davis onto the floor Friday. One thing that would definitely help the Lakers? LeBron getting the whistles he deserves, particularly in transition. The Lakers have made a point of sending the league clips of James getting hit on his way to the bucket. James has made a point of it as well. So why isn't he getting the calls? And what is the impact on the offense that he doesn't? For most of his career, pulses have been an important part of his work, and he joins us to talk about his excitement for the potential of winter peas. We're not talking about Austrian Winter Peas, which are feed grade peas that are smaller in size and darker in color. We're talking about food grade winter peas, which have been available for several years in certain growing areas. Steve says the differences are larger size of at least 17 grams, a clear seed coat, and a green or yellow cotyledon. “Multiple years, my average yield of my winter peas was 6,000 pounds. That's between all the varieties. Spring pea will range from 2,500 pounds up to 4,500 pounds. But I can get 7,000 or 7,500 pounds off some of the different winter pea varieties. That's the part that makes me super excited..” - Dr. Steve Van VleetSteve talks about why he believes this crop is a great option for a lot more growers than are using them currently and some considerations for growing winter peas including seeding depths and timing and pest and disease management. The limiting factor he sees playing a big role in this variety's success is the access producers have to markets.“Not are you only helping the soil, helping another crop that you're producing, which makes it better, makes it healthier. But what are you doing when it comes to human health?... If we could market this and people would become educated and say, this is one of the most healthy crops that we can produce and improves human health, soil health, crop health, other crop health. In Episode 1436, Sean Woodley reacts to a very bad opening day of free agency for the Toronto Raptors, who lost Fred VanVleet to the Houston Rockets (3 years, $130 million), re-signed Jakob Poeltl (4 years, $80 million) and brought in Dennis Schroder as VanVleet's replacement (2 years, $26 million). Off the top, Sean details why the loss of VanVleet is so damaging, and why the front office's failure to account for the Houston Rockets godfather offer definitely suggests a misreading of the market and an overconfidence in their ability to thread a very delicate needle this offseason. That said, the notion that the Raptors screwed themselves by not dealing Fred for some bogus package at the deaadline is a little off-base. They made a reasonable gamble, and lost. But now their left to pick up the pieces. Keeping Jakob Poeltl is a good move, but his fit on the team is certainly more tenuous without a shooting threat running pick and rolls alongside him, and Dennis Schroder feels like a pretty bad fit for what the Raptors badly need. Plus, some thoughts on why Scottie as the point guard makes very little sense and will bring with it a lot of offensive pain. One of the big tricks in forecasting free agency is trying to figure out how much value a player has to a large number of teams around the league. Certain players - your stars, or near-stars - generally fit anywhere and will perform as advertised. Others are clearly more dependent on context. Like Rui Hachimura. His statistics, particularly in the regular season, weren't much different than the numbers he posted in Washington, his impact with LA, and the niche he filled around LeBron and Anthony Davis, was important. He gave them another large body defensively, a guy who could create his own shot off the dribble in the mid-range, and - at least in the playoffs - step out and hit a 3-pointer. So while Hachimura may not be a great fit or merit a huge payday with every team, with the Lakers he is a key piece. Particularly when you consider who else the Lakers might find to replace him, should Hachimura land in another city next year. While LA can match any offer he receives, they won't have that flexibility to offer a potential replacement. It's a double whammy - perhaps they'd be forced to use their larger exception to sign a good player, meaning that same exception couldn't be used for adding talent to last year's team. The same principle applies to D'Angelo Russell, as well. His name was again in the news, as Toronto guard Fred VanVleet announced he'd be opting out of his deal with the Raptors, making him a free agent. Would a sign-and-trade to Toronto make any sense?
