Guy, Lloyd, and Jamie talk with Secretary Ross about the state of the current economy, and the rapidly changing technological landscape.

The major markets experienced losses last week as US-China tensions and coronavirus concerns were renewed. The tech centric Nasdaq fell about the same as the MSCI Emerging Market index. Meanwhile, the Dow, S&P 500 and MSCI World Indices all fell down in the mid 2% range. The losses were fairly consistent at the sector level with only Healthcare ending in positive territory for the week. Energy suffered the greatest losses but was followed closely by real estate. The losses in the Energy sector were despite gains made in the GSCI Crude Oil Index totaling 8.63% for the week. It was the GSCI Natural Gas Index that was hit with a loss of 11.9% for the week. Real Estate and Financials both suffered last week as the Mortgage Bankers Association reported another increase in the weekly mortgage forbearance rate to 7.91% An increase was expected as a new month began and more borrowers requested forbearance on their home loans. Mike Fratantoni, MBA's Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research and Industry Technology, said that “FHA and VA borrowers have been most impacted by the job losses thus far, with the share of Ginnie Mae loans in forbearance at almost 11 percent.” The economic instability has cause some to wonder if we might see negative rate in the Fed Funds Rate by next year. Midweek, Fed Chair Jerome Powell squelched the idea of negative interest rate in the U.S. stating, “The committee’s view on negative rates really has not changed. This is not something that we’re looking at.” Finally, on Friday the U.S. Department of Commerce announced plans to restrict Huawei from using American made technology and software in its manufacturing of semiconductors. The rule change is set to go in effect in September. “Despite the Entity List actions the Department took last year, Huawei and its foreign affiliates have stepped-up efforts to undermine these national security-based restrictions through an indigenization effort. However, that effort is still dependent on U.S. technologies,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. This news echoes last years trade war headlines as the US, along with much of the world, looks to China for explanation for the handling of information and mitigation for the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced his nation’s intention to join the United States’ Moon to Mars exploration approach, including NASA’s Artemis lunar program. The announcement took place at a ceremony Saturday at NASA Headquarters in Washington during which NASA Deputy Administrator, Jim Morhard, and Head of the Australian Space Agency, Megan Clark, signed a joint statement of intent. After a White House meeting with CEOs of U.S. steel and aluminum manufacturers earlier this week, President Trump announced his intention to place tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. While members of the administration like Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross defended the move, domestic and international markets and governments responded very differently. The Dow plunged 500 points after the announcement, Canada threatened an “all-out” trade war and the European Union threatened to impose tariffs on American exports like bourbon. The president claims the tariffs benefit U.S. industries, but many who work in steel-dependent industries bear the scars of President George W. Bush’s one-year tariff on imported steel. Steve Lester, owner of QMF Steel, talks about the potentially disastrous consequences that President Trump’s tariffs could have on the steel business. Mike and Kristin begin with a discussion about the recent immigration agreement between the U.S. and Mexico. They go into some depth about the details of the agreement, President Trump's stance, the concerns about the short timeline for Mexico, and some of the larger issues that the U.S. may face down the road. Both agree to take a “wait and see” approach. They also question whether it would be wise to add a “sunset” provision to executive orders so that Congress can assess crisis situations with a more flexible timeframe, but without necessarily hindering the President's ability to act quickly. Next up is another geo-political topic that picked up steam toward the end of the week – escalating tensions with Iran. This week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pointed the finger at Iran for involvement in attacks of tanker vessels in the Gulf of Oman. Mike wonders if this is something the U.S. should approach with “muscle”, essentially backing Iran into a corner, and whether that is a wise move. Kristin brings up historical context and the importance of unifying allies to address Iran's aggression – as was the case under President Reagan. Mike also brings up questions about the connection between this and possible arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Turning to domestic issues, Mike and Kristin discuss the disagreement surrounding the citizenship question on the 2020 Census, as well as the House Oversight and Reform Committee's vote to hold AG William Barr and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross in contempt for withholding related documents. Both Kristin and Mike surmise that there is more here than meets the eye, as the actions seem politically motivated on both sides. They discuss their views, and Mike brings up an interesting idea regarding the timing of the Census.
