Esperanza and Irwin welcome Glenn and Stacey, the proprietors of Cedar Cottage Springs. Like many places, Eastern Long Island rentals have dramatically changed. Seasonal rentals, have shifted from the previous Memorial Day to Labor Day season to shorter term rentals; often very short. Airbnb's dominate, and are the source of much displeasure. But for Glenn and Stacey, they are not renting their house, they are sharing their HOME. Two creative types, they've brought a warmth and quirkiness to a business that often lacks exactly that. They are immersed in our community, and our conversation takes in that, and much more.

Marvin Cash welcomes Captain David Blinken back to the podcast for another enlightening episode of On the Salt, where they dive into the complexities of fishing conditions along Eastern Long Island. The conversation kicks off with a reflection on the recent challenging weather patterns, particularly the relentless northeast winds that have kept many anglers off the water. David shares his insights into how these winds are influenced not just by local weather but also by stagnant frontal systems and the impacts of hurricanes further south. As they navigate through these conditions, listeners gain an understanding of the challenges that arise in fishing during certain times of the year, particularly the transition from summer to fall, and the implications for anglers eager to catch species like striped bass and bluefish. The discussion shifts to the current fishing landscape, highlighting the presence of false albacore and the mixed catches of striped bass and bluefin tuna that have been a delightful surprise for those who have braved the waters. David emphasizes the importance of adapting fishing strategies based on environmental conditions, such as the depth at which fish are located and the types of bait that are available. As winter approaches, the episode takes a deeper dive into a listener's question about winter fly presentations, exploring the nuances of fishing techniques during colder months. David explains how fish behavior changes drastically with temperature variations, and he suggests practical approaches to increase success rates, emphasizing the significance of location, presentation and the adaptability required for winter fishing.Listeners are treated to valuable tips on the forage that stripers rely on in winter, ranging from small crabs to various bait fish. David elaborates on the behavior of holdover fish and the strategies anglers can employ to locate and catch them, regardless of whether they are in deeper waters or warmer spots. The episode wraps up with a reminder of the joy of fishing, even in less-than-ideal conditions, and an invitation for listeners to join David on his upcoming tarpon trip in Mexico, where the camaraderie and the thrill of the catch promise to create lasting memories. This engaging discussion not only equips listeners with practical fishing knowledge but also fosters a sense of community among anglers eager to share their experiences and learn from each other. To learn more about David, check out our full length interview. All Things Social MediaFollow David on Facebook and Instagram.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.Support the Show Shop on AmazonBecome a Patreon PatronSubscribe to the Podcast
The state of the economy is one of the most pressing issues across the country, but in the 1st congressional district it's especially urgent to address ever-rising costs of living, record-breaking housing costs, and a dwindling middle class. Democratic congressional candidate John Avlon and 1st District Republican Congressman Nick LaLota hold distinct philosophies on solving the economic problems present throughout Eastern Long Island. Unsettled weather persists across the Northeast and Central U.S today......Hazardous heat possible across South Florida and South Texas this week......Significant flash flooding possible across portions of East Texas intothe Gulf States tomorrow and Friday...Several focused areas of stormy and unsettled weather can be expectedtoday across the central and eastern parts of the Lower 48 as a series offrontal systems gradually migrate eastward. Along the Eastern Seaboard, coastal low pressure located over the southern DelMarVa will maintainlocally heavy rainfall chances over Eastern Long Island and Coastal NewEngland through tomorrow morning, with 2-3" of rain and isolated flashflooding possible as the storm wraps up offshore. Much of this activity inthe Northeast will remain steady stratiform rainfall, with the bulk ofrobust thunderstorms being confined to parts of the Mid-Atlantic andSoutheast. Thunderstorm coverage will be more widespread across the Plainsstates this afternoon as a very warm and moist Gulf of Mexico airmass isdrawn northward ahead of a weak cold front. Severe weather is the bigstory there, as the Storm Prediction Center has an Enhanced Risk (level3/5) of severe thunderstorms across the Texas Panhandle and SouthernKansas. The same Gulf airmass will set the stage for a bout of unusually early hotweather in South Florida and Texas, with heat indices exceeding 100degrees possible. Owing to the combination of oppressive heat indices andforecast record warm overnight temperatures in these areas, majorheat-related impacts are possible with this round of hot weather throughthe work week according to experimental NWS HeatRisk guidance. The forecast remains on track for widespread heavy rainfall acrossportions of East Texas and West Mississippi tomorrow as repeatthunderstorm complexes track across the region, where a Moderate Risk(level 3/4) is in effect. Areal averages of 3 to 5 inches of rainfall isforecast for the Moderate Risk area, and locally higher amounts will bepossible, which suggests numerous instances of flash flooding are likelyas the region is very sensitive to any additional rainfall. The threat isexpected to roll into Friday with another Moderate Risk depicted oversouthern Mississippi and Alabama, as the environment is ripe for continuedthunderstorm development.

Just because Minerva Perez tackles some of the most critical issues facing some of the most vulnerable East End residents, doesn't mean she can't be a little silly sometimes. And even though she has a degree in theater from NYU, her movie credit might be a little less highbrow than you would think. But... you'll have to listen to the end to find out in what famous comedy she played. In the meantime, you'll hear about the serious business that occupies her days as Director of OLA- Organización Latino Americana of Eastern Long Island. Services they provide (to all citizens, whether of Latin American origin or not) include helping with everything from illegal evictions, wage theft, health services, legal direction and so much more. High on Minerva's long list of achievements is the establishment of a youth services initiative which provides assistance to young people throughout our schools and communities in whatever areas they might need it. I was fascinated by not only the depth and intensity of their work, but also Minerva's clear love for the projects, and more importantly the people she serves.

On today's podcast I unearth the secret history of America's bioweapon's program on Plum Island. This tiny island off the shores of Eastern Long Island, that is home to Lab 257, has remained an enigma, shrouded in deep mystery for a very long time. Fortunately, the truth is being revealed about the epicenter of where many of the world's infectious diseases were engineered and weaponized. In his groundbreaking book, Lab 257, Michael Christopher Carroll exposes a U.S. federal government germ laboratory's diabolical history through innumerable declassified government documents, scores of in-depth interviews with scientists, government officials, local residents, historians, first-hand accounts and his access to Plum Island itself revealing what was previously hidden in plain sight. Countless people in America and around the world are suffering from illnesses that have either been misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Thankfully there are medical professionals with experience who specialize in diagnosing and treating these bio weaponized, stealth and harmful pathogens that have been causing hidden epidemics and pandemics for years. The show concludes with hope for truth and justice and a place of healing for the body, soul and spirit. *This podcast episode is dedicated to all of the people who have been afflicted by these bio weaponized pathogens. May God bring healing and wholeness to those who are suffering. Music: Cinematic Middle EasternPhoto: Courtesy of Adobe Stock

The "Waste Not Want Not" bulletin of last week, which included news of the death of my elderly sow, Possum, elicited a range of responses, including valuable kitchen composting tips to help me replace my living, breathing consumer of food scraps. But virtually everyone added condolences. By far the most touching and beautiful tribute came from my next door neighbor Emily, a gifted designer, who delivered a card of her own creation. On the front was an illustration of my great big pig gazing through the chain link fence from her mugwort filled pasture. On the back, she wrote, "I will miss visiting Possum through the fence." And then there was the message from my frequent farm sitter, soon-to-be (I hope) housemate, and always attentive reader Steve: "You had to dig a grave for a 400-pound pig and didn't think that was interesting enough to be your main topic?!" Truth be told, Steve was not the only one curious about Possum's burial. Others asked. And the issue rather preoccupied me too, from the moment I found her lifeless in her hut. To begin with, of course, there was her size. Six feet long from snout to tail, 3 feet tall, and 21 inches from side to side at her widest exactly. (I measured her before digging.) A solid, wide creature who always amazed visitors. She was also awkwardly located. Her pasture was fenced off and deliberately set in a soggy low lying area, a pig paradise where they could create mud wallows in the summer and the sheep would not want to graze. It is fenced off from the rest of the property with no wide gates or any easy route for mechanized vehicles to enter. Then there was the matter of time and temperature. Our unusually warm winter saved me from a painful battle with frozen soil, but it would only hasten the decomposition of her body. I felt an urgent need to get her in the ground. To top it all off, I was alone. It was one of my rare (and unwanted) weekends without Eric. He and Steve and Matt and Tom and Paul all offered to help, but dispersed as they were from the Berkshires to New York City and Eastern Long Island with commitments they couldn't instantly drop, I didn't feel I could wait. Against all their warnings (Eric insisted: "Don't do this yourself!"), I stubbornly decided I just had to get to it. Shovel in hand, I went down to survey the possible burial sites. In a perfect world, I would bury her next to her former companion, Vernon the boar, in the middle of the pasture. But the prospect of maneuvering this massive corpse down and up a rise and across a stream was a quest I could not undertake. Besides, any action emphasizing their coupled status would be terribly guilt inducing for me. Possum and I had a complicated relationship. She came to us as an adult, a gift from a farm where she constantly fought with a rival sow. In most circumstances she was sweet and liked to be approached and petted, but she, like any sow, could be ferocious if ever her piglets were threatened. And I, unfortunately, on one muddy spring day, found myself trying to grab her male piglets for the vet to castrate. I grabbed a hoe to keep her at bay as she charged me. With her full weight, she jammed it back into me, cracking one of my ribs. From then on, I kept a wary distance. That was just one reason I spent several months soon thereafter convincing my late partner, Peter, to sell off our 30 plus pigs. After they were almost all gone, I reversed course. I couldn't bear to part with Vernon the boar, having raised him from when he was just a couple of months old. Fearing he would be lonely, we kept his companion, who was, ironically, Possum. (Possum and I both loved his sweet nature.) And as fate would have it, she was left alone when Vernon died. Her farm of origin did not want her back. I felt guilt at her life isolated from pig society and with only a couple of daily visits from me. Emily's note was especially comforting by letting me

Montgomery J. Granger is a three-time mobilized U.S. Army Reserve Major (Ret.), who was called into his Reserve Center in Uniondale (Long Island), New York, on 9/11, in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, which crashed at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. He answered his country's call to duty next in January 2002 for a mission to help run the military detention facility at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was called up again just six months after returning from duty at Gitmo, but this time remained stateside at the U.S. Army Reserve Training Center at Fort Dix, New Jersey. After nearly six months at Fort Dix, MAJ Granger returned to civilian life for about a year when he was involuntarily transferred to another Reserve Army unit that was deploying to Iraq in the fall of 2004. Major Granger served 14 months of active duty on his third deployment and served in Baghdad, Abu Ghraib, Camp Bucca, and Ashraf, Iraq, as Medical Service officer for military detention facility operations. He is married and is the father of five children, and lives on Long Island, New York. He is also the author of "Theodore," a personal narrative published in the 2006 Random House wartime anthology "Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan and the Home Front in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families," where he wrote about his fear and anxiety over having left his family in 2002, and especially two-day-old Theodore, and what reaction there was upon his return. Operation Homecoming was sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, and edited by Andrew Carroll, editor of the New York Times bestselling book, War Letters. Granger was born in Illinois, raised and schooled in Rubidoux, California, and attended undergraduate school at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He earned a master's degree in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College-Columbia University, where he met his wife. He also attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he earned professional credits to obtain a New York State School District Administrators' license.
