Sir Earle Christmas Grafton Page was the second shortest serving Prime Minister of Australia, but he has had a long lasting impact on Australian politics. In this episode I'll talk about why he has such an interestingly festive name, the beginnings of the Coalition, and how he became the first Country Party member to become Prime Minister - despite the fact that they had way less seats than other political parties. The assignment from school is to gather leaves of the local flora. Laura and Mary announce their family will be on a camping trip and hope to find extra special leaves up in the "hills" of Minnesota. However, leave it to Harriett, Nellie and Willie (against the opinion of Mr. Oleson) to find a means of turning a short two day hiking/camping/gathering trip into a one-of-a kind adventure. With the kids busy snatching every leaf in sight (even against Mary's warning), Charles and Mr. Oleson are having a great time fishing (trying out a new Bamboo pole), and Caroline and Harriet stay close by to set up the camping sites and prepare all the meals. Unfortunately, for Harriet, parasols and Tea sets are great if you are glamping near home, but are excess baggage when hiking through the wilderness. It's like Town Party, Country Party in the great outdoors....only this time there is a river and not a pond to fall in to. Who will get the most leaves for the the school project? Why are there Snow Capped mountains on the Prairie? And which of our campers is a true Wilderness girl?

Meanwhile, a shove from Nellie, as a Town party party favor, allows Laura to make a new friend. Caroline sets to task setting up a Country party while Charles tries his hand as a footwear designer.

This will correct an error I made, I mistakenly mislabeled yesterdays episode! Hello all - for this installment of Walnut GroveCast, Megan Parker was kind enough to join me to discuss the beloved episode, Town Party, Country Party Town Party, Country Party was originally released on October 30, 1974 *note - I really did lose this recording after about 20 minutes in and Megan was incredibly understanding and we started over! I am still embarrassed by that! "Laura befriends Olga, a girl crippled from birth with one leg shorter than the other and who, as a result, is teased by Nellie and often left out of the other children's games. But when Charles comes up with a way to help Olga walk more normally, he meets unexpected resistance...from Olga's over-protective father. This week on Little Podcast on the Prairie, we explore the contributions of immigrants to the United States, a common disability, and Michael Landon's infamous temper on set. We are introduced to Laura’s friend Olga Nordstrom (future heiress to the Nordstrom Empire… we like to think) who suffers from a condition known as leg length discrepancy. As a special bonus, we get to see the inside of the Oleson’s house during Nellie’s birthday party (the “Town Party”), and it’s as dope as she says. Just before Laura and Mary hold their own “Country Party” at the Little House, pa “invents” shoe lifts thus changing Olga’s life (and the lives of every other person suffering from that condition) forever. There’s nothing Pa cannot do. Will Olga’s intense and sweaty father finally take a much needed chill pill? Are apple fritters an appropriate main course for dinner? Who will come out on top in the Laura v. Crab sub-plot? (Hint: It isn’t Nellie.) Find out all of this and more on this week’s episode. Special thanks to our RN source Courtney Schuman. The end of summer is one of the best times to have a party, especially if it's in the evening. The hot summer days give way to slightly cooler but long summer nights. You can linger(1) outside, barbecue, or even dance. And if you want to do what a friend of mine did, you can have a big country party. Kim and her boyfriend Casey both turned(2) 50 this year, so they decided to have a big 'bash'. They have a house with a large front garden where they usually ride a 4-wheeler for fun. They converted this place over a two week period into a cowboy-style venue for their celebration. Kim bought hay bales to put here and there for people to sit on. They built a dance floor out of apple pallets (which are strong, flat wooden boxes used in the apple industry). They strung lights all over the dance floor, the trees, and the fence. And then, they hired some caterers(3) to cook and serve a barbecue style meal, plus a birthday cake. The band they hired was actually very good; they played a lot of American rock and some country music too. The place gradually filled up with people wearing cowboy hats and boots, and there was lots of singing and beer drinking. There was even a trampoline! I took my daughter, Domini, as she is friends with Kim's daughter. They jumped on the trampoline and ran barefoot over the dance floor to the dessert table and back again. It was very casual. Even the smell of a nearby forest fire added to the atmosphere. "Anna, Domini's staying the night," Kim said to me, "and you should too! We could sit by the fire, drink wine and talk all night," she beamed at me enthusiastically. "Oh Kim, I turn into a pumpkin at midnight," I replied. This is one lady who both loves and needs her sleep! Before I knew it, it was midnight. I had really enjoyed myself, but it was time for this cinderella to pick up both of her shoes and go home. 1. 'To linger' is a fabulous verb which means to spend time in one spot because you choose to, or to be the last remaining .... a. The sunset on the beach was stunning. We didn't want to leave, so we lingered and just took it all in. b. The ceramic industry still lingers in the town, though most of the businesses have closed or moved to the bigger cities. 2. When it comes to having a birthday, we use the verb 'to turn' followed by the number of years. a. Her baby turned one last week, and we were invited to the party. b. When children in the U.S turn 16, it is legal for them to drive. 3. A 'caterer'/'catering company' is a person or company that is hired to make food for a special occasion. Another type of company that is used to help with the arrangements of a party is a 'rental company' which rents equipment or furniture. a. The wedding planner advised us to hire a caterer, but I didn't realize how expensive it would be. b. Robert's Rentals has all you need for your next big 'bash': tables, chairs, plates, cutlery, and even a chocolate fountain!
July 4, 1788 - In Providence the local Federalists have set up a giant barbecue to celebrate both the Independence Day holiday and to read aloud the proposed Constitution. There is little hope that Rhode Island will quickly ratify the Constitution, in fact, as of today, there hasn't been any move to even call for a convention to consider the document. The anti-Federalists in Rhode Island aren't just opposed to the Constitution. They oppose virtually every idea to strengthen the Union. For the past few years they have intentionally/unintentionally sabotaged the Articles of Confederation by using the power of the veto to stop any forward progress. It is in Rhode Island where the rampant use of State issued paper money has resulted in chaos and financial ruin to States and individuals trying to do business with Rhode Islanders Now, as the few Federalists in Rhode Island gather to celebrate, William West, leader of the Country Party, decides to take action and make sure that the Providence Federalists understand that Rhode Island has no intention of ratifying the Constitution.
