Little House on the Prairie Podcast: Walnut GroveCast

Christina returns to the podcast to revisit this episode with me – I hope you enjoy it! Divorce, Walnut Grove Style Season/Episode: Season 7, Episode 7 Air Date: November 10, 1980 Writer: Don Balluck Director: Michael Landon In Little House on the Prairie's “Divorce, Walnut Grove Style,” newlyweds Laura and Almanzo Wilder face marital strife that spirals into comedic chaos. Laura, overwhelmed as a schoolteacher, serves watery stew and neglects household chores, irking Almanzo. Their bickering escalates when Laura misinterprets a note—“My Only Love… Brenda Sue Longworth”—as proof of Almanzo's affair with an old friend, Brenda Sue, who's actually just celebrating her published song. Jealousy drives Laura to a public brawl with Brenda Sue and a dramatic exit to her parents' home, fueled by Harriet Oleson's gossip. Charles and Caroline urge reconciliation, but Laura's stubbornness persists until Almanzo clarifies the note's innocent meaning. The couple reconciles, vowing better communication, while Charles' ongoing struggle with a picture window adds humor. This episode, directed by Michael Landon, blends sitcom-style misunderstandings with heartfelt lessons about trust and love in marriage. Some Quotes chosen by me: “I'm doing the best that I can! Why can't you understand that?” (Laura) “Because all I understand is I work hard all day, I come home to a half-cooked meal and a house I can't sing in because you've turned it into a library!” (Almanzo) “There's just no excuse for a husband to call his wife stupid.” (Charles) “You know, I just can't get over that boy calling my daughter stupid…” (Charles) The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Alison shares her Paris adventures (yes, including some rodent encounters), Dean dishes on their exciting new ventures with Prairie Legacy Productions, and Pamela goes on a rant against possums (apologies to the possum lovers out there). But then—on to the main event! We're recapping another standout episode from Season 1: “School Mom”. Caroline Ingalls steps in as the earthy and compassionate substitute teacher, helping a student in need named Able. And we ask the most important question:Why does Able look like he's 42 years old?Able was played by Dirk Blocker, the son of Bonanza legend Dan Blocker and the best friend and mentor of Michael Landon, and shockingly, was only 17 when the episode was filmed. After his father, Dan's passing, Michael Landon brought Dirk into the Little House family to honor his dad's legacy—and wow, did he deliver.Alison and Dean also reveal a shocking tidbit about Miss Beadle's stunt double (you won't believe it!) and ask the pressing question: where does Miss Beadle actually live?Pa steps up in peak “Chesty Charles” fashion, cooking dinner for Caroline after her long day of teaching (ladies, we all know how hot that is—gentlemen, take notes). We also dive into how the relationship between Karen Grassle and Michael Landon shifted over time, leading to Karen's role being gradually diminished. Alison opens up about how this impacted her and the rest of the cast—and how Karen still showed up, always delivering powerful, heartfelt performances. And of course, no Little House episode recap is complete without calling out the real villains of the Prairie: the school children. Seriously, Walnut Grove, do better! Honestly, the level of petty in that classroom (including Mrs. Oleson) is chef's kiss terrible. This Ma-centric episode is a beautiful example of empathy, compassion, and patience. It tugs at every heartstring and proves once again why Caroline Ingalls remains the #1 mom of all time. Then join Pamela, Dean, and Alison over on Patreon where Alison and Dean will spill the beans about Prairie Legacy Productions, and what's in store for 2025!Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Spring is in the air—even for Alison in France! Hard to believe it's been over a year since the Simi Valley 50th Anniversary event. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago… and we're still recovering. HA! Today, we're diving into our first Season 7 episode recap: The In-Laws—a whirlwind of absurd hilarity starring our favorite duo, Dean Butler and Michael Landon. This episode serves up Pa/Almanzo tension in the silliest way possible, blending slapstick humor with some questionable frontier authenticity (mountains on the prairie, anyone?). Michael Landon's comedic brilliance shines, but let's be real—this episode asks us to completely suspend our belief in historical accuracy. And these days? That kind of creative license wouldn't fly in TV production, which makes us even more curious (and hopeful!) about the upcoming Netflix adaptation. Meanwhile, the 1800s patriarchy is alive and well, as bet-making seems to be totally fine with Ma and Laura. We also have Alison's infamous pickle-and-ice-cream moment, plus Percival and Doc Baker's utterly maddening reaction to her *gasp* gaining weight. Oh, the joys of period-accurate sexism… Other highlights include:Albert rocking some impressive peach fuzzGarvey's return (and a shirtless Andy for all you Teen Beat fans!)The telephone playing a surprisingly important roleAnd seriously—can someone take Mary out to a restaurant for once?!And of course, no chaotic trip to Sleepy Eye would be complete without the comedic genius of Eddie Quillan, who steals the show as Cavendish, Pa's latest nuisance. Dean and Alison also pull back the curtain on the technical side of Little House, dishing about the extensive voiceover work (aka "looping") that was a staple of the show—much to Dean's chagrin. And finally, the real question: Did Michael Landon wax his chest? We get to the bottom of it -- Only on The Little House 50 Podcast, where we discuss the truly important Prairieverse matters! Then join Pamela, Dean and Alison on Patreon! Dr. Soon-Shiong is also the owner of the LA Times which has pushed pro covid vaccine propaganda on the masses for years including just recently. This is a big admission but obviously years late. The doctor pointed out that he's seeing metastatic pancreatic cancer in children as young as 13 which is extremely unusual. Pancreatic cancer usually only affects people 70 and older. It was a shock in 1991 when Michael Landon, actor and legendary TV producer was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 54 years old and died within 12 weeks. That was considered young. Now, here we are 3 decades later and it's being normalized to see young teens die from the horrible ailment. Moderna had previously confirmed last year that their mRNA "vaccines" cause cancer and in an exposed coverup, Pfizer had acknowledged behind closed doors that their injections did the same. Meanwhile, the latest normalization of disease related fear continues as Bird Flu propaganda is painted all over the media with claims that bobcats are spreading it as well as cat food. This is clearly an intro to the agenda to target the food supply and inject store bought meats with modRNA while simultaneously restricting food to rations. This is something the WEF has proclaimed they want to do so don't be surprised if we shift in that direction fast. Happy Thanksgiving! The gang couldn't be more excited to share this special day with you. Today, and every day, we are deeply thankful for supporters like you, our Bonnethead family, who allow us to connect and continue the bond that started with Michael Landon in 1974.We're thrilled to welcome Kathi Von Etten, head of the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, who joins us to reflect on her "year of the Prairie" and share exciting news about the final Little House Bus Tour (say it ain't so!) happening Sunday, December 1, with Dean and Alison as your guides. Head over to the Simi Valley website (link also in the show notes) to grab your special edition items before they're gone. We felt it was fitting to have today's guest on Thanksgiving, as we are deeply inspired by her gratitude and grace—Baby Rose Wilder herself, Jennifer Donati. Jennifer shares with us how, at just seven weeks old, she and her twin sister were cast as Baby Rose in Little House on the Prairie. Though she has no memories of that experience, Jennifer was reunited with her Little House family a couple of years ago, and as she says, "life has never been the same." This adult reunion sparked her to finally write the book she had always dreamed of: More Than Just the Prairie. In it, Jennifer opens up about the personal hardships she has faced, including the loss of her twin sister, Sarah, and her beloved mother. Her story is one of resilience, strength, and gratitude, offering a powerful example of overcoming tragedy with grace. Oh, and by the way—she is also a badass!Continue the conversation with us on Patreon, where gratitude is at the heart of the discussion. This Thanksgiving, Pamela, Dean, Alison, and Jennifer share what they're thankful for, including Alison's story of meeting her newly discovered relatives in Ireland. They also explore how gratitude is the highest vibrational force. With so much to be thankful for, Little House on the Prairie is at the core of many of these blessings. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone—we hope you enjoy this heartfelt segment.A SPECIAL NOTE ON THIS THANKSGIVING: Little House on the Prairie is at the heart of what so many are most grateful for, not just because of the timeless stories it told, but because of the lasting impact it has had on all of us. The show brought families together, fostering a sense of community and shared values that transcend generations. It taught us about resilience, love, and the importance of finding gratitude even in the most challenging times. For many of us, Little House was more than just entertainment—it was a source of comfort, inspiration, and connection to a simpler, yet deeply meaningful way of life. It has shaped how we view family, community, and the world around us, and continues to remind us to appreciate the little things in life. Today, as we gather with loved ones, let us remember these values as a country, a community, as human beings. Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Dean Butler is an actor, producer, and director best known for his role as Almanzo Wilder (the man Laura Ingalls married) in Little House on the Prairie, based on the beloved Little House book series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. He appeared in the final four seasons of the show, the spin-off show Little House: A New Beginning, and the three post-series TV movies. He was also a producer for NBC Golf's Emmy-nominated series Feherty for over ten seasons. "The idea of being a cowboy and riding horses began for me at our family ranch in northern California," Dean Butler says. "In this picture, I'm holding our horse, Cricket, with my sister Meg in the saddle. Those beautiful summer days in the country with my family all around me shaped my entire life and prepared me for what was to come in the years ahead." Now, on the occasion of Little House on the Prairie's 50th Anniversary in 2024, he's sharing the details of his young life as an aspiring cowboy and what he learned from Michael Landon in touching a new memoir. READ Check out Prairie Man from the library! ABOUT THE AUTHOR & INTERVIEWER Cast just before his twenty-third birthday, Dean Butler joined Little House on the Prairie halfway through its run, gaining instant celebrity and fans' enduring affection. Ironically, when the late, great Michael Landon remarked that Little House would outlive everyone involved in making it, Butler deemed it unlikely. Yet for four decades and counting, Butler has been defined in the public eye as Almanzo Wilder—a role he views as the great gift of his life. Interviewer Devan Stuart Lesley is a longtime journalist and owner of Legacy Talent Group, representing actors and models throughout the Southeast. Her expansive media career experience includes print, radio, and TV journalism; commercial, news, documentary, and independent film producing; assistant directing; acting; and voice-over. Today we have a very special guest, one that lives in the hearts of all Bonnetheads: Karen Grassle, otherwise known as Caroline Ingalls--or "Ma"! Beginning with the Little House pilot, her performance on Little House captured the hearts of millions, embodying strength, warmth, and resilience. Beyond her work on Little House, she has enjoyed a varied career in theater, film, and television, earning a reputation as a versatile and dedicated performer. Her contributions to Little House continue to be celebrated world wide and she is beloved as one of the most iconic TV moms in television history. Her belief of Ma being a strong woman and not an archetypal ingenue was a big deal in 1974.We reminisce about the enthusiastic reception for her during the Simi Valley 50th Anniversary Festival, and how Karen didn't know how beloved she was until she was 80 years old--the year she published her memoir, "Bright Lights, Prairie Dust". She talks about accepting her destiny as Ma and how it influenced the trajectory of her career, how recovery from alcohol addition was a huge milestone in her life, and shares memories of some favorite moments on set, including Victor French, Melissa Sue Anderson and the iconic “A Matter of Faith” episode. #chickenwireKaren shares how acting was her calling from a young age and how writing her personal and vulnerable memoir was healing for her. Karen answers some of your listener questions, and then joins us on Patreon for a very personal conversation about difficulties on the Little House set behind the scenes and with Michael Landon during her time on Little House. Not on Patreon yet? Screen legend Michael Landon holds a unique spot even among other wildly successful actors. Landon starred in not one, not two, but three long-running hit television series, starting with Bonanza in 1959, then the iconic Little House on the Prairie in the 70s and early 80s, and finally Highway to Heaven. He was also the consummate family man - sort of. He clearly cherished the role of 'dad' to his nine children, but his first two wives certainly weren't thrilled to be retired for newer models. Thank you for being part of the conversation.  This is Play It Forward.  Real people.  Real stories.  The struggle to Play It Forward.  Episode 630…during this 50th anniversary of Michael Landon's adaptation of Little House On The Prairie actor/producer Dean Butler shares with us Prairie Man   Dean Butler shares the behind- the-scenes of Little House on the Prairie on a heartfelt journey of "good luck, good television, and the very good- if gloriously imperfect-people who made it so." Cast as Almanzo, Laura Ingalls' starring love interest, Butler captured the enduring affection of fans and co-stars alike. With a foreword from Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie), this uplifting memoir follows Butler's journey from childhood to the Prairie and beyond.   Cast at twenty-two years old, Butler had no idea of the lasting impact being cast in Little House on the Prairie would have on him. Having previously starred in Judy Blume's Forever with Stephanie Zimbalist, Butler was fresh- faced and naïve to Hollywood, eager to make his mark. He found his home in the Prairie and embraced his fellow cast members as family. Butler's passion for honest-to-goodness entertainment began in the Prairie and followed him throughout his rich career of acting, producing, and directing.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Rundown -    Intro - 00:25   Kevin Flynn - 05:21   Outro - 01:40:21   Special Craig's Colorado Homefront Show addresses the outbreak of violent fascism in Denver precisely 40 years ago. Alan Berg was gunned down by Bruce Pierce, a felon with an assault weapon who'd come from Idaho to Colorado to assassinate a Jew. Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, two Rocky Mountain News reporters, wrote a masterpiece on Berg's killers titled "The Silent Brotherhood: Inside America's Racist Underground."   After starting his young life as a stage actor, Kevin Flynn became an award-winning reporter and social commentator. When he got the big job in Denver at the Rocky Mountain News, Kevin became a top Denver reporter for decades, traveling the country to report on Ward Churchill, Tim McVeigh and the many people involved in plotting Berg's death.   An East Coast kid from the Lehigh Valley, Kevin takes pride in his Irish-American and German-American lineage, explaining the good working man's life provided by his father, Joe Flynn and Kevin's mom, who worked at the Easton Express.    We learn about powerful interactions with Michael Landon, who visited Kevin's hospitalized brother, Dennis, in 1964. We reminisce about Little Joe from the Cartwright family who lived on Ponderosa. Bonanza was an influential part of the Flynn, Silverman and baby-boomer upbringing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC_fCRacm0M   Guest and host share an Emmy for a PBS12 Time Travel production of Colorado Inside Out, set in 1959. Flynn was immaculate as Al Nakkula, while the host did an award-winning job portraying his father, slick Denver real estate lawyer Sheldon Silverman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=swtrM3rGk_k   The subject turns to the terrible night of June 18, 1984, when Alan Berg was gunned down on his driveway at 1445 Adams Street in Denver. The scene still bears bullet damage visible on the area around the townhouse driveway where Berg was ambushed. We talk about Berg. We try to identify his true friends.   Flynn is in touch with Berg's former wife, Judith Berg, who was with him that evening at a Jefferson County restaurant and almost got out of the car on Adams Street before a decision was made to take Judith to a different location. The shooting happened when Alan Berg returned alone.   Flynn pays tribute to fellow author, the late Steven Singular, who wrote Talked to Death, a book about Berg, his background and who his true friends were in Denver and Berg's native Chicago. We learn about what led to his being targeted for assassination by the Jew-hating bigots. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-craig-silverman-show/id1522579679?i=1000541693122   What was the role of Peter Boyles? Was he Berg's friend? The competitive talk show host invited bigoted con man Rick Elliot to the shared studio to promote Elliott's publication of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. When Berg arrived, he took on the Jew-hating conspiracists on the air. Here's Boyles' version of events. https://www.denverpost.com/2024/06/16/alan-berg-antisemitism-assassination-denver-shooting-neo-nazi-white-supremacist/   We discuss the investigation and the federal RICO prosecution of Berg's murderers in Seattle. Berg's murder was part of proving a predicate act in the Aryan Brotherhood's conspiracy of violence throughout America, and especially in the Northwest. We discuss why the host's boss, Denver DA Norm Early, declined to prosecute in Denver.   Robert Mathews was the ringleader of the fascists who came to Colorado to kill Berg. A charismatic leader, Mathews was incinerated as the feds closed in on his house on 12.8.84 in Whidbey Island, WA. Flynn interviewed Matthews' family and they explained Robert's early attraction to Goldwater, John Beirtherism and hating on “Commies and Jews.”   Flynn wrote The Silent Brotherhood with his great friend, the late Gary Gerhardt. Now, their book is being made into a major motion picture called The Order. Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult are the two lead actors with podcasting comedian Marc Maron playing the role of the late Alan Berg. https://www.denverpost.com/2023/03/02/jude-law-nicholas-hoult-the-order-silent-brotherhood-kevin-flynn-book-movie/   We contemplate the fate of Berg and his former wife if both got out of the vehicle that horrible night 40 years ago on Adams Street. Alan died alone, but the lessons regarding the dangers of fascist hate will not die until they rob all of us of our voices. There are lessons in this special episode dedicated to the memory of the late Alan Berg.

On this episode of our podcast, Wendi shares some inside scoops on the TV show, takes us through the journey of life on set, and discusses her life-changing run-in with a brain tumor as an adult. Her memoir, Red Tail Feathers: Dare to Discover the Beauty of Grace, is a more in-depth take on this journey, highlighting how she felt God's presence and grace through it all. She also wrote A Prairie Devotional, daily readings and prayers based on the Little House TV series. At the top of the episode, Lynne and Roy give Joey some constructive criticism on a recent episode about race, in which Joey had some regrets. Little House on the Prairie TV series (1974-1983) was based on the Little House best-selling book series, written biographically by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The series shares the struggle of frontier-living in a post-Civil War, 19th century America. Famous actor, Michael Landon, (Bonanza) who played "Pa Ingalls," had a major hand in using the show to address issues, such as adoption, alcoholism, faith, poverty, blindness, racism, child abuse, and even rape. Although predominantly a drama, the program has many lighthearted and comedic moments, as well. Hey Heal Squad, in this insightful episode, we explore a powerful conversation with Pam from Pancreatic Cancer Patient Services, shedding light on the critical role of case managers and their invaluable support for individuals battling pancreatic cancer. Pam shares her journey and experiences, offering vital guidance and discussing the incredible services available for patients and families. Hopeless in 1996: If a long list of celebs can't beat pancreatic cancer back in 1996, then how can anyone and no pancreatic cancer organization exists. Hollywood victims become the saviors: Michael Landon, Patrick Swayze, Joan Crawford, Jack Benny, Donna Reed, Paul Mitchell, Juliet Prowse, and Pavarotti and how their surviving families affected the cause. Millions of dollars later: what has been learned? Pancreatic cancer cells are smart and strong: they build a watermelon rind-like structure that doesn't even need blood flow to survive.  Molecular profiling: helps us look at tissue tumors to see if there are any mutations that allow for better treatment. Reckless chemotherapy: The day of just throwing chemo at cancer in hopes to see what sticks needs to pass. Pancreatic tumors: the different kind of pancreatic tumors. Survival rates: higher now compared to 25 years ago. No harm in having hope: you could be that person who makes it over 10 years. Disregard stats: every person who is diagnosed is a statistic of one: your cancer journey and outcome are your own. Pancare Services helps all patients: if diagnosed, Pancare case managers will help every step of the way. Be pushy and assertive: especially when it comes to doctors. Symptoms: are vague but could include back pain, nausea, indigestion, and in more advanced cases, jaundice. If symptoms are chronic or you have a family history or you smoke or from select prone cultures, then maybe it's time to look deeper. First rule out worst case scenarios: Push doctors to rule out worst-case scenarios first when engaging in diagnosis. Keep talking: the more we talk about this disease, the more we can make people (even those you don't know) aware.
