Review of Accountable, How we Can Save Capitalism by Warren Valdmanis and Michael O’Leary. Available from Penguin Business UK here. Capitalism is failing, and the tools we are relying on to fix it – corporate social responsibility, divestment, impact investing and government control – are only making things worse. Chevron boasts about the $50 million per year it spends on renewable energy whilst it spends 200 times that on oil exploration Goldman Sachs touts its 10,000 Women initiative, but its board ranks 358th out of the Fortune 500 for gender diversity and women earn 55 percent less than men do on average By focusing on corporations rather than people, we’ve put our faith in empty trends and brand-focused window dressing. Why should those responsible for our current crisis be trusted to fix it? In Accountable, authors Michael O’Leary and Warren Valdmanis offer a blueprint for everyone to take responsibility for using their economic power as consumers, as investors, as employees and as voters to trigger a fundamental shift away from an economy that is unethical, unfair and destructive to our environment and institutions. Their investigation cuts through the tired dogma of current economic thinking to reveal a hopeful truth: if we can make our corporations accountable to a deeper purpose, we can make capitalism both prosperous and good. Accountable How we Can Save Capitalism Warren Valdmanis Michael O’Leary, reviewed As you may have noticed there are more and more books looking at these issues and attempting to accurately capture what the issue is and to try and articulate what possible solutions there may be. The authors have a solid grasp of the material and cover issues well and clearly. We have read other books where the reader tends to get lost in a haze of economic jargon, thankfully this is not the case with this book. At the same time they are clear cognisant of the fact that this is a complex and challenging problem, and one that needs to be adressed as soon as possible. The chapter on the attempted divestments of college endowment funds, like Harvard and Yale in particular, clearly illustrate both how hard it can be to get these entities to engage. Even then it can be hard to get completely satisfying or effective results. Similarly the analysis of impact investment is well worth reading as it explains that the jury is perhaps still out on the effectiveness of these strategies. We hope that it works, but results have not always been as expected, and often with unexpected outcomes. These two topics in particular help to illustrate that this is a good book and is well worth reading, even if there is not yet a completely obvious road map towards what ‘good’ could and should look like if we are going to be able to turn around the impacts of climate change before the effects are irreversible. Michael O’Leary was part of the team that founded BainCapital’s DoubleImpact fund, he’s been flying the flag for the evolution of finance for many years, and he’s published a book it’s called Accountable: The rise of Citizen Capitalism. Michael’s book manages the difficult task of talking about the new world of capitalism without being preachy. He brings together the nature and stories of the world’s biggest companies, and ties them to the many ways both investors and consumers are becoming increasingly empowered to influence and drive change at these companies. You can find a link to his book in the show notes, at www.Johntreadgold.com and that’s where you’ll also find the whole back catalogue of previous episodes if you want to hear from more impact leaders. It’s a crazy world right now, and COVID has exposed quite a few problems with capitalism as it’s currently constructed. In Accountable: The Rise of Citizen Capitalism, Warren Valdmanis and Michael O’Leary take us inside the fight to save capitalism from itself. Corporations are broken, reflecting no purpose deeper than profit. But the tools we are relying on to fix them—corporate social responsibility, divestment, impact investing, and government control—risk making our problems worse. Instead, they propose a new economic model they call citizen capitalism that will generate prosperity for all, not just those who sit atop the earning chart, and will demand, above all else, accountability. As always, we welcome your feedback. Please make sure to subscribe, rate, and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Play.
My guest today makes the case that corporations are broken, reflecting no purpose deeper than profit. But the tools we are relying on to fix them—corporate social responsibility, divestment, impact investing, and government control—risk making our problems worse. If we can make our corporations accountable to a deeper purpose, we can make capitalism both prosperous and good. For example, what happens when the sustainability-driven CEO of Unilever takes on the efficiency-obsessed Warren Buffett? Does Kellogg’s—a company founded to serve a healthy breakfast—have a sacred duty to sell sugary cereal if that’s what maximizes profit? For decades, government has tried to curb CEO pay but failed. Why? Can Harvard students force the university to divest from oil and gas? Does it even matter if they do? Michael O’Leary and Warren Valdmanis go on a fast-paced insider’s journey that can change the way we look at corporations. Likely to spark controversy? Yes. But don’t cynics and dreamers both have a stake in reforming capitalism? Or is it fine as is? Tough questions. Bio: Michael O’Leary was on the founding team of Bain Capital’s social impact fund. Previously, he invested in consumer, industrial, and technology companies through Bain Capital’s private equity fund. He has served as an economic policy advisor in the United States Senate and on two presidential campaigns. Ryanair is set to cut 3,000 jobs, or about 15% of its workforce, as it restructures to cope with the coronavirus crisis. The airline says the 3,000 jobs under threat were mainly pilot and cabin crew jobs. Ryanair added that there are likely to be pay cuts of up to 20% for remaining staff. Chief Executive of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, disclosed this to BBC, saying it will take up to six months to refund passengers for flights cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The boss of Ryanair has been criticised for saying that airport security checks should focus on Muslim men who are travelling alone, because they pose the biggest terror threat. The Muslim Council of Britain said Michael O'Leary's comments were "racist and discriminatory". Profiling is the practice of categorising people and predicting their behaviour on the basis of particular characteristics. We're profiled all the time by businesses and insurance companies with the help of computer algorithms. That same technology has been piloted by police and will now be used to identify low-level offenders who are deemed likely to go on to commit "high-harm" crimes, perhaps involving knives and guns. Is it right to target specific groups on the theory that they are statistically more likely to commit certain crimes? Civil liberty watchdogs argue that such ‘pre-crime’ profiling not only violates everyone’s civil rights, but fosters alienation and hostility in marginalised communities. Supporters of ‘data analytics’ believe that, on the contrary, it can eliminate all bias and human error from these judgments. There’s a wider debate about the balance between public safety and trust. Should we worry that these preventative measures are eroding our goodwill towards authority and each other? There are proposals to introduce airport-style security checks in ever more areas of our lives, from concert halls to places of worship. Security campaigners say it’s a necessary step towards making us all that little bit safer. Libertarians call it an over-reaction to a statistically-negligible threat. It is, they say, allowing the criminals to dictate how we live our lives. With Nick Aldworth, Tom Chivers, Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper and Tom McNeil. Producer: Dan Tierney.

The fascinating Nile Rodgers story shows that not all wealthy and successful people are solely motivated by making and holding onto money. It’s a common misconception that all rich people are greedy, money grabbing, only motivated by making money and hoard and keep all their cash to themselves. I’ve studied the lives thousands of wealthy and successful men and women, and personally know many very rich people. In 95% of the cases I’ve studied and witnessed, the above assumptions are just not true. Of course, most self-made people look after and manage their money, and want to ensure that they can leave something for their family when they die. Beyond that, they are usually generous and give fortunes away to charity and worthy causes. In my personal experience in working with charities like Rotary International, the busiest and most successful people give up their money (The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated $100 dollars to help Rotary end polio) as well as their valuable time in order to help others. They volunteer and show up when asked to lend a helping hand, as well as putting their hands deep into their pockets to support projects financially. Unsuccessful people usually say, “I haven’t got time”. The common belief that the rich and successful are solely motivated by money is rarely the case. Successful people have usually found something they love doing, which is why they are successful. To be successful in any endeavour, you have to enjoy and love what you do, otherwise you could not take all of the knocks and setbacks. Unsuccessful people are invariably doing jobs they hate, which is one of the reasons they are unsuccessful. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates loved building computers from a young age. Warren Buffett and Charlie Monger love investing and spend hours and hours reading company reports. The rich also want to make money, but that is not the sole reason for their endeavours. That’s why they go on working long after they’ve made enough money to live on for the rest of their lives. You may have heard the expression, “he’s made more comebacks than Frank Sinatra”? That’s because the great, and very rich, singer (who’s private was cleaned by a 14-year-old Nile Rodgers) retired several times but got so bored that he kept coming out of retirement to do more concerts well into his seventies. In an interview for the Sunday Times Fame and Fortune feature, multi award-winning musician, writer and producer Nile Rogers said he had no idea how much he earned last year. He said that his accountants organise enough for his needs and the rest is put into trust or goes to charity. His financial priorities now are making sure that there is enough money to keep We Are Family Foundation going long after he is gone. Every year, his foundation takes 35 kids from all over the world to New York to mentor them. They are kids that he believes will have an effect on or can change the world in a positive way, like Jack Andraka, who as a teenager come up with a $15 screening device for early-stage pancreatic cancer. The 66-year-old cancer survivor describes himself as a “worker bee” who has been credited on over 1500 albums, which have gone on to sell 500 million copies. He has worked with a wide variety of artists from David Bowie to Madonna and Daft Punk, with whom he enjoyed a renaissance as a performing artist winning 3 Grammys in 2014. In his younger days, Rodgers was a big spender. He received a $4 million royalty cheque for the 7 million-selling single Le Freak when he was just 27 years old. He went on a big spending spree buying a Porsche and a fast boat like the one he saw on the 80’s TV show Miami Vice, even though he lived in New York at the time. Unlike many of the "stars who lost it all" I feature in my book, Yes, Money Can Buy You Happiness, Rodgers successfully maintained his earnings throughout his career while his spending habits gradually mellowed. He was adaptable and, like the Gibb brothers, went into writing and producing for other artists when he saw that the 70's disco era was over. There's a saying that the poor work hard for their money but the rich make the money work hard for them. However, after losing money on Wall Street in the junk bonds scam, Rodgers said he now allows his money to "rest" while he does the work. He “invests” in technical schools in Africa teaching underprivileged young kids to code. There are of course entrepreneurs who just wanted to be rich, like the Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary who said he set out in his business career to make a lot of money. Are all rich people nice, generous or mean and nasty? Of course not. Money is like alcohol; it just amplifies more of who you are. If you’re broke, mean and miserable, money will probably just make you rich and even more mean and miserable! For Nile Rodgers, money buys him the freedom to do the things he wants to do, to keep on rocking and make a difference in the world. Long may you continue! Key Takeaways Not all rich and successful people are solely motivated by making money. Not all rich people are greedy, money grabbing and only motivated by making money. The rich and successful, like Nile Rodgers, give an enormous amount of time and money to help others. Money amplifies more of who you really are.
How well do you know your colleagues? How much do you socialise with them? Do you have an annual retreat for your colleagues and their families? After you listen to this episode you may reflect on these questions. To give your patients the very best care possible it seems obvious that your team needs to know each other, understand the strengths and weaknesses of each other, and combine and communicate well in the clinical environment. So how much time does your department devote to fostering a department culture that feels like a family? Including getting to know each team member’s actual family. How much do you do? My Intensive Care department does this pretty well but we could always do better. And we haven’t done a retreat in my time working there. In the final episode of 2018, you’ll listen to Dr June Goh who is all about fostering such a family environment. She came up with the idea of taking her colleagues and their families on an annual weekend retreat over a decade ago. And she organises regular resident and medical officer engagement sessions with fun activities. All of which I suspect brings them tighter together as a more harmonious team, thereby helping their patients. June is a Senior Consultant in Singapore General Hospital and the Director of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care. She is very involved in teaching both medical students and post graduate doctors as member of the Core Faculty Anaesthesia Residency Programme, Chair of the Residency Welfare Committee, Adjunct Assistant Professor Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Clinical Lecturer in the Yong Loo Lin Medical School. She chairs the Singapore General Hospital transplant oversight committee. June also currently serves on the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Board, Dover Park Hospice Governing Council and co-chairs the fundraising committee. She has been an active member and past president of the Association of Women Doctors Singapore (AWDS) helping out with the various activities organised by AWDS. June is currently President of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations and is passionate about women's family and health issues. This episode was recorded in May 2018 as a live interview in front of a conference audience at the 5th SG-ANZICS Asia Pacific Intensive Care Forum. Thanks to that meeting's Organising Committee, representing Singapore’s Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SICM), Singapore, and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS), I was invited to conduct several live interviews for this podcast. Many thanks to Tan Hon Liang and David Ku for this opportunity. In this conversation June also spoke on topics such as: Her early career Her perspective on Singaporean gender equality How she mixed bringing up her children with being a busy doctor Building trust and rapport to strengthen communication with patient’s families Her perspective on some of the innovations in medical education Coping with work stresses to stay balanced Managing our device usage in the smartphone era Identifying and mentoring successors to our institutional roles Her thoughts on lifestyle factors such as yoga, exercise and sleep Her enjoyment of fashion The Mastering Intensive Care podcast is aimed to inspire and empower you, as an intensive care clinician, to bring your best self to the intensive care unit, through conversations with thought-provoking guests. My hope is that by listening to the show you’ll hear at least one thing to help you improve, as either a healthcare professional or as a person, with the ultimate aim of helping your patients. Our ICUs might be growing larger in size but there seem to be the same number of very sick patients to care for overall. All of which means we seem to be admitting a greater proportion of less unwell patients to our ICUs, especially in the larger tertiary ICUs. Given we also suffer from “bed block”, where there are no available beds in the hospital to transfer patients to, when they are no longer critically ill, our ICUs can become holding bays for effectively "ward-level" patients. This may be great for the patients but it means longer ward rounds, and a level of frustration for intensive care teams, who may feel like they are not making a significant enough difference for these less sick patients. When A/Prof Michael O’Leary started out in Intensive Care nearly 30 years ago, he remembers being enthusiastic and busy, performing many interventions on mostly sick patients. Having now moved across the world and gained a few decades of experience, he has a great perspective on some of the challenges our larger ICUs face. Michael is former President of the Australian & New Zealand Intensive Care Society and a Senior Specialist in Intensive Care in Sydney, working at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St George Private Hospital. He is Clinical Associate Professor at Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney, and Co-State Medical Director of the New South Wales Organ and Tissue Donation Service. Michael trained in anaesthesia in the United Kingdom and holds a Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA). His intensive care training commenced in the UK in Cambridge and continued in Sydney where he achieved Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (FCICM). Michael was a Research Fellow at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, UK where he completed his MD degree with studies into the metabolic response to sepsis and use of glutamine and growth hormone in the amelioration of catabolism. In recent years his main interests have been in end-of-life care and organ donation in the ICU. This episode was conducted in May 2018 as a live interview in front of a conference audience at the 5th SG-ANZICS Asia Pacific Intensive Care Forum. Thanks to that meeting's Organising Committee, representing Singapore’s Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SICM), Singapore, and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS), I was invited to conduct several such live interviews for this podcast. Many thanks to Tan Hon Liang and David Ku for this opportunity. Apart from his observations about the growth and change in Intensive Care over the last few decades, Michael and I talked about: How the SG-ANZICS meeting came to be His career history Being a part-time intensivist Playing the role of Co-State Medical Director of an organ donation service The characteristics of good intensivists Being President of ANZICS and the importance of being involved with professional societies Some perspectives on good communication and clinical care. The Mastering Intensive Care podcast is aimed to inspire and empower intensive care clinicians to bring their best selves to the intensive care unit through conversations with thought-provoking guests. I genuinely believe we can help each other to improve, as both professionals and as people, so as to give the absolute best possible care to our patients. Ryanair is making headlines for all the wrong reasons for a second week running, with 400,000 customers set to be affected by further flight cancellations over the winter period. On the latest Inside Business podcast, Barry O’Halloran says Michael O’Leary’s airline could have been forgiven for an isolated mess up that led to last week’s PR disaster and the cancellation of two per cent of its flights over a six week period, but this latest crisis gives the impression of an organisation that is stumbling. He is joined by consumer affairs correspondent Conor Pope who says Mr O’Leary’s announcement that Ryanair is to “grow more slowly” over the coming months due to “sensible schedule changes” is a nicer way of saying that he doesn’t have enough pilots or crew to cover shifts. In the second half of the show presenter Dominic Coyle speaks to CEO of Hospitality Ulster Colin Neill, Adrian Cummins of the Restaurants Association and Irish Times business affairs correspondent Mark Paul, about the thorny issue of the hospitality sector VAT rate, either side of the border.

It's been a week of uncharacteristically poor PR management at Ryanair with the airline forced to cancel 2 per cent of its flights over the next six weeks, due to a cock-up concerning pilots holidays. Irish Times Consumer Affairs correspondent Conor Pope says Michael O'Leary is clearly raging over the blunder but it's unlikely to have any lasting impact on the brand. He joins business reporter Barry O'Halloran to discuss the crisis affecting more than 300,000 of the airline's customers. In the second part of the show Business Affairs correspondent Mark Paul hits the National Ploughing Championships to take the pulse of Ireland's agriculture sector and find out what farmers are most concerned about with Brexit just around the corner.

William Ragsdale, Gary Hawkins on FX's new series, "Justified," will be making an appearance on BuzzWorthy Radio! After attending Hendrix College where he appeared in plays with Sling Blade actress and fellow Arkansan Natalie Canerday, he gained attention as the young hero of Fright Night and Fright Night II, a series of humorous vampire films co-starring Roddy McDowall. He also performed in theatre productions of Neil Simon plays Biloxi Blues[3] and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Ragsdale has had a sporadic career on prime-time television. He starred for three years in the Fox Network sitcom Herman's Head. He had a brief recurring role in Judging Amy as the obnoxious son of Richard Crenna's character. He played a TV producer on Grosse Pointe, which lasted one season. He was cast in the pilot for Charmed, but turned down the series to star in the short-lived sitcom Brother's Keeper. He appeared on Ellen as a boyfriend of the character Ellen Morgan (Ellen DeGeneres), before Morgan (and DeGeneres herself) came out of "the closet" as a lesbian. He played bit roles in numerous movies and television series, including a four-episode stint on Less Than Perfect. Oddly enough, he lost movie roles in both Glory and Biloxi Blues to Matthew Broderick, but did work with Broderick in the 2009 film Wonderful World.
He has had pivotal roles in such primetime hits as “The Facts of Life” and “Murphy Brown” and “Popular,” and has appeared in various films and theatrical ventures, but he’s no doubt most fondly remembered for his iconic, Emmy-nominated work as dastardly charming rogue Craig Montgomery on “As the World Turns.” He has recently shifted his attention behind the scenes, working as a director and producer on a new online project, a comedic takeoff on the daytime world entitled "Steamboat," and now the incredible SCOTT BRYCE is stopping by the Buzz to give us the inside scoop!
