Dalian Wanda Group, led by billionaire Wáng Jiànlín 王建林, invested heavily in China's movie industry over the past decade. In 2014, at the cost of $8 billion, Wanda Studios Qingdao was founded. This move was aimed at establishing a dynamic supply chain that would be able to facilitate the creation of entire films, from production to distribution. After debt issues forced Wanda to sell its majority stake in the venture to Sunac, another Chinese property developer, the studios were rebranded as Oriental Movie Metropolis.Gary Kho, the former chief technical officer and chief marketing officer of Wanda Studios Qingdao, worked for the studios throughout their construction. The 4-decade battle for the world’s most iconic endurance race Per The New York Times, the Ironman Triathlon puts on more than 260 races in 44 countries and is valued at nearly a billion dollars, making it one of the world’s most premiere sports brands.   Now, over 40 years later, the people at the forefront of its creation haven’t seen a dime, and the legal triathlon continues. It all started in Hawaii... Long before the Spartan or Tough Mudder, naval officer John Collins and his wife, Judy, thought to combine 3 of the toughest endurance races: On Feb. 18, 1978, the first “Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon” was born. There were 15 participants. John wrote a 3-page rule book with 10 major rules that boiled down to: “Swim 2.4 miles! Run 26 ¼ miles! Bike 112 miles! Brag the rest of your life!” But, it was rule number 8 -- which set the entry fee at $5 and stipulated that the event would be sponsored by participants -- that would later cause the biggest headache.  Gettin’ Silky with it By ’79, Collins needed someone to run the 3rd edition of the event, so he handed over a box of paperwork to husband and wife fitness club owners Hank Grundman and Valerie Silk -- no lawyers, no signatures. By ’82 the race had ballooned in popularity, and John Dunbar (the runner-up in the original 2 races) started selling copies of the original trophy. He, like the other 14 OG racers, presumed a stake of the competition still belonged to him... So, when Silk registered the Ironman trademark in ’83 and told Dunbar to cease sale of the throwback trophy he was pedaling, he didn’t go quietly. The real triathlon... Silk sold the brand for $3m in ’89 and, in 2015, after years of expansion, the brand was acquired by its current owner, a Chinese conglomerate called Dalian Wanda Group, for $650m. 4 decades later, Dunbar continues to argue that the famed triathlon belongs to him and the original 15, even though the courts, and many of Dunbar’s allies, have insisted it’s too late.  Silk said no original competitors showed interest in Ironman until it made money. Jonathan Garrison was a VP at Goldman Sachs, a former General Manager of Dalian Wanda Group, an Executive Producer on the movie SOUTHPAW, and is founder and CEO of En Route Media. He also used to be the frontman for a punk rock band called DTX back in the days when you could still run into Henry Rollins in the crowd, or have someone pull you up onstage to belt out a song before tossing the mic and diving back into the mosh pit. Sky Moore joins Online Editor Anthony Zangrillo on the Fordham IPLJ Podcast to discuss the recent implosion of certain China-Hollywood co-production financing deals. Sky is a partner in the corporate entertainment department of Stroock, practicing entertainment, corporate, and tax law. Sky has been practicing in the entertainment industry since 1981, and represents a broad spectrum of clients throughout the entertainment industry, including producers, sales agents, foreign distributors and financiers, and has handled some of the largest financing transactions in Hollywood. Earlier in March, Eldridge Industries, which owns TV unit Dick Clark Productions, terminated the $1 billion sale agreement with Wang Jianlin's Dalian Wanda Group decided upon in November. Wanda had only paid $25 million of this purchase price. Additionally, Paramount’s deal with Huahua Media and Shanghai Film Group is floundering because Paramount hasn’t seen a cent of the promised $1 billion. Even though Hollywood deals fall apart all the time, there appears to be less security in these Chinese-invested projects. Are Chinese film investors just “tourist investors,” arriving with great fanfare, taking meetings with players across town, kicking the tires of every studio and production company that may be interested in Chinese investment, suggesting that a deal might be imminent, and then going back to China without agreeing to anything? Furthermore, is this a bigger issue because the Chinese yuan is a regulated currency? Are the fractured deals more of a result of the government rather than the film studios? Chinese regulators appear to be clamping down on foreign investment deals, due to the hundreds of billions of dollars leaving the country. The podcast addresses these issues and speculates on what movie subject will finally be the breakaway co-production hit both Hollywood and China are searching for. In this episode, Laszlo explains a little about the "Gagi Nang", the 自己人, known the world over as the Teochew (Chiu Chow or Chaozhou) people. Like the Hakka people, the Teochew's were originally from the Yellow River Valley and migrated to their present location on the Guangdong coast via Fujian province. Their language and culture is unique. Their food and Chaozhou culture is celebrated in more places than Chaozhou and not just by the people from that region. There are Chaozhounese people on every continent except maybe Antarctica. They're a proud group of people with a collective track record that is admirable by any standards of human achievement. The only mentions in this episode were of the Teochew's of South East Asia and the US. There are plenty of other lesser-known or unknown histories of Teochew's in Canada, Europe, Mexico, Central and South America, and of course Australia and New Zealand. The great 19th-century Chinese diaspora is filled with stories, legends, and historic events. The Chiu Chow people are a major part of everything that happened.
