This is a special one. I dusted off the mic and sat down with the four exceptional college interns who spent their summer at Catalyst by Wellstar. Mentorship is deeply important to me. If it's also important to you, there's something for you in the conversation. Especially if you stick around to the end for the last question I asked that none of them expected and they won't soon forget. Thank you to Rahma Ashraf, Alex Changus, Tania Rios, and David Tran for all the work and heart you poured into Catalyst thus summer. Excited to see where you go from here!
Food wouldn't be the same without it. In fact, fried chicken might just drop off the face of the planet forever in its absence. What are we talking about? Only one of the world's most popular condiments EVER (and sorry ketchup and ranch girlies, your condiment hales in comparison to this spicy topping). With over 20 million bottles a year sold, and a staple of every Thai and Vietnamese restaurant, how did Huy Fong's sriracha sauce become one of the most popular condiments in the world? Aidan unpacks the tale of how David Tran escaped his life in communist-occupied Vietnam to risk everything on a hot sauce recipe and the Vietnamese community of Los Angeles. How did David manage to outlast the competition and outmaneuver numerous knockoffs for over four decades? And what marketing lessons can we take away from his anti-marketing techniques and unique business philosophy? Aidan explores the fascinating tale of how the OG marketer stuck to his mission statement and turned down multi-million-dollar deals to continue his legacy of making a rich man's hot sauce at poor man's prices. David Tran joins WeedBudz to share some exciting news and tell us how he started his Cannabis journey in Seattle, Washington. David has built dispensaries, worked with cultivators, and built one of the icons of Cannabis media, Dope Magazine. All of these ventures had the same dedicated focus on patients and consumers. When you make people the center of your operations, there is no limit to what can be accomplished. David has put together a one of a kind, Virtual 4/20 Event! All of the details can be found at https://farechild.com/ David has teamed up with an all-star cast that wants to help people stay connected during these strange times in our history. If you are in the cannabis industry it would be impossible for someone not to know David Tran, heck I am certain you went to a Golden Ticket party. He is the co-founder of Dope Magazine, Farechild and Goldfingers Group; on IG he is the Tranimal Chronicles and if you run into him at a tradshow or on a plane he is easily distinguishable by his well put together outfits, coiffed hair and the ever present Daydream Electroforming gold plated cannabis bud around his neck. Over Facebook Messenger, David and I discuss the Covid-19 pandemic and his decision to remain in Cabo San Lucas extending his annual anniversary trip with his family out of concern to protect and remain in place to diminish the spread of the virus as we know it. Listen as we talk about the need for cannabis community, how to stick together and the importance of events for the space to create networking opportunities. The best way; not the easy way is how Farechild Events has put on events in the space since their formation in mid 2019. Starting with MJBiz in Las Vegas they continued bringing energy and focus to intimate events such as Urbana's party in SF to out of industry events like Andrew Yang's Presidential bid. As if all of the above would be enough David Tran founded Cowgirls Inc. also sits on the boards of Intev Technologies, Sensi Magazine, AMMA Healing, Herban Legends and Trigrow Systems. The messaging that you should take away from this podcast is that the currency of people, reputation, integrity and love is what will persevere after this pandemic passes. David Tran has so much to give to the cannabis space please reach out to him via Instagram @tranimalchronicles @thefarechild @goldfingersgroup or on his LinkedIn FatherTran

If you like hot sauce, chances are you know about Sriracha. The chili sauce was brought to American consumers by David Tran, a now 73-year-old Vietnamese refugee, who founded a food company named after the boat that brought him to the U.S. Now, nearly 40 years later, the company controls nearly 10% of the $1.55 billion American hot sauce market, and other hot sauce makers are stepping into the ring, aiming to take over American fridges. John Lewis' base in Magna Park, Milton Keynes is a gigantic 2.1m sq ft space which initially opened in June 2009. Its operations are spread across two warehouse facilities, Magna Park 1 and Magna Park 2, working harmoniously to fulfil online customer orders and in-store stock. Ever wondered what goes on inside these vast facilities? SHD Logistics assistant editor David Tran went along to visit one of the UK's best loved retailers to find out. David summarises some of the key features in these warehouses, including advanced automation from KNAPP, who were appointed by the retailer to design and deliver the site's intralogistics solution. Retail operators like John Lewis benefit from their situation in Milton Keynes, where there is a capacity to build large warehouses while remaining in close proximity to the UK's most important motorway networks. Warehouse property developer Gazeley has a widespread property development project across Milton Keynes, which includes its latest speculative building close to Magna Park. The 574,000sq ft site is the tallest and largest speculative development in the UK and possesses some enhanced features to ensure it meets the demand of a wide number of potential tenants. We find out more about these special features in a tour of the site with Development Director Joe Garwood.

In this episode, Laszlo explains a little about the "Gagi Nang", the 自己人, known the world over as the Teochew (Chiu Chow or Chaozhou) people. Like the Hakka people, the Teochew's were originally from the Yellow River Valley and migrated to their present location on the Guangdong coast via Fujian province. Their language and culture is unique. Their food and Chaozhou culture is celebrated in more places than Chaozhou and not just by the people from that region. There are Chaozhounese people on every continent except maybe Antarctica. They're a proud group of people with a collective track record that is admirable by any standards of human achievement. The only mentions in this episode were of the Teochew's of South East Asia and the US. There are plenty of other lesser-known or unknown histories of Teochew's in Canada, Europe, Mexico, Central and South America, and of course Australia and New Zealand. The great 19th-century Chinese diaspora is filled with stories, legends, and historic events. The Chiu Chow people are a major part of everything that happened. They contributed not only to the society and the economy of their adoptive homelands, they still kept their ties with the eight districts of Chao-Shan. This is the story of the extremely popular and iconic Huy Fong Foods hot sauce - Sriracha. The company, Huy Fong Foods, is an American success story. The founder, David Tran, left Vietnam in 1979 and ended up in the U.S., along with many of his fellow refugees. He had been part of the Chinese minority in Vietnam, and because of his Chinese heritage, he had been pressured to leave after the Vietnam War. David Tran missed the taste of the hot sauces from Vietnam, and also needed to make money, so he started the company, Huy Fong Foods, in 1980 in California. The company was named after the freighter that he took to leave Vietnam. It was named "Huey Fong". Huy Fong Foods has never spent money on advertising, but it continues to grow year after year. They make Sriracha from fresh red Jalapeno peppers, which comes from Underwood Ranches - their sole supplier. The peppers are delivered within hours of harvesting. It's believed that the original Sriracha sauce was created by a woman named Thanom Chakkapak from a coastal town in Thailand called Si Racha. The original sauce is still being produced, and it is called "Sriraja Panich". It is sweeter and runnier than the Huy Fong Foods brand Sriracha that we know so well.
