It all started 10 years earlier in 1989 with The McPherson Tape (aka U.F.O Abduction), which was lost to the world until it suddenly resurfaced within the UFO-tracking community as purportedly genuine evidence of a family's alien encounter (it's not). Once TV news organizations got ahold of it 5 years later, director Dean Alioto was tasked with remaking it for Dick Clark Productions. It's this 1998 version - just a year ahead of The Blair Witch Project - which showed on TV and fooled a generation of young viewers with some of their first exposure ever to found footage horror. We ended up discussing both over Thanksgiving turkey this year. Dig into yours and enjoy this week's find along with us!

“The more you try, the luckier you get…” Words to live by, from podcast guest Arthur Smith, the pioneering television producer behind some of the longest-running unscripted series in history, and author of the just-published motivational memoir Reach: Hard Lessons and Learned Truths from a Lifetime in Television. Arthur's long-running hit “Hell's Kitchen,” with Gordon Ramsey, helped to forge the modern food competition reality genre, while his Emmy-nominated “American Ninja Warrior” has spawned a cultural movement and inspired millions to push themselves to next-level successes in their own lives and careers. As the founder and chairman of A. Smith & Co. Productions, Arthur has produced over 200 shows, for virtually every network and streaming platform, including “The Titan Games,” “Mental Samurai,” “Kitchen Nightmares,” “The Swan” and “Paradise Hotel.” Prior to launching his own production company, he served as the youngest Head of Sports in the history of the Canada's CBC television network, and as Executive Vice President of Programming, Production and News for FOX Sports. He also served for four years as Senior Vice President of Dick Clark Productions, producing a wide variety of award shows, special events and non-fiction programming. In Reach, written in collaboration with podcast host Daniel Paisner, Arthur reflects on his remarkable career and shares some of the lessons he's learned while pushing himself beyond what he ever thought possible. “In the nonfiction genre people get tired of the same thing,” he recently told a reporter from the Jewish Journal. “The biggest hits in reality/nonfiction television come from originality. So we have to keep reinventing. We have to keep freshening up ideas. We have to keep reaching.” To learn more about Arthur Smith: A. Smith & Co. website A. Smith & Co. Facebook A. As we approach the year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we talk to guest Jenny Higgins, Director of UW-Madison's Collaborative for Reproductive Equity about the effects of the Dobbs decision in Wisconsin and nationally along with what abortion restrictions have done to families, communities and the economy. Then we briefly touch on the underreported story of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association selling the Golden Globes to Dick Clark Productions and asset management company Eldridge and plans to shut down following several scandals. How are more people not talking about this? We end on talking about the new inflation report, which leads to a conversation about the disconnect between what the numbers say about the economy and what the public thinks about the economy. We had to cut the topic short because of time but we plan to start there for Wednesday's show. Guest: Jenny Higgins

Your hosts range widely and freely on the topic of horror: specifically, found footage horror. The films discussed are The McPherson Tape, The Blair Witch Project, Backrooms, and Horror in the High Desert.Watch The Backrooms short we talked about here on YouTube.Director Dean Alioto talked with the Found Footage Critic about UFO Abduction and Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County, aka The McPherson Tape:In 1989 Dean Alioto shot his first film, UFO Abduction, for a meager budget of $6,500—the master copy of the film was subsequently destroyed and thus the movie was never widely released. Ten years later Dean Alioto pitched UFO Abduction to Dick Clark Productions, who picked up the idea and gave Dean Alioto a $1.2 million budget to shoot a remake for television. In 1998, the remake was released entitled Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (a.k.a. The McPherson Tape).Over the years the names of these films has resulted in a great deal of confusion. Even to this day, both UFO Abduction and Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County are referred to as “The McPherson Tape.”Found Footage CriticAn explorer named Tom covered the tragic story of the Death Valley Germans at his blog, OtherHand. Richard Wagstaff Clark[1][2] (November 30, 1929 – April 18, 2012) was an American radio and television personality, television producer and film actor, as well as a cultural icon who remains best known for hosting American Bandstand from 1956 to 1989. He also hosted five incarnations of the Pyramid game show from 1973 to 1988 and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, which transmitted New Year's Eve celebrations in New York City's Times Square. As host of American Bandstand, Clark introduced rock & roll to many Americans. The show gave many new music artists their first exposure to national audiences, including Ike & Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, Simon & Garfunkel, Iggy Pop, Prince, Talking Heads, and Madonna. Episodes he hosted were among the first in which black people and white people performed on the same stage, and they were among the first in which the live studio audience sat down together without racial segregation. Singer Paul Anka claimed that Bandstand was responsible for creating a "youth culture". Due to his perennially youthful appearance and his largely teenaged audience of American Bandstand, Clark was often referred to as "America's oldest teenager" or "the world's oldest teenager".[3] In his off-stage roles, Clark served as chief executive officer of Dick Clark Productions company (though he sold off his financial interest in his later years). He also founded the American Bandstand Diner, a restaurant chain modeled after the Hard Rock Cafe.[vague] In 1973, he created and produced the annual American Music Awards show, similar to the Grammy Awards.[3] PICTURE: By ABC Television - eBay itemphoto frontphoto back, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=103866599 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thequeensnewyorker/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thequeensnewyorker/support

Welcome to the CRC 2021 Highlights Series. Recorded live in Dallas, this series is bringing interviews straight to you from exhibitors, speakers and attendees at this year's event. In this interview, host Jamin Brazil interviews Digital and Social Content Marketing Manager at NetBase Quid. More about CRC 2021: https://www.insightsassociation.org/conference/crc-2021 Find Sergio Online: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sergiooliveri/ Website: https://netbasequid.com/ Find Jamin Online: Email: jamin@happymr.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jaminbrazil Twitter: www.twitter.com/jaminbrazil Find Us Online: Twitter: www.twitter.com/happymrxp LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/happymarketresearch Facebook: www.facebook.com/happymrxp Website: www.happymr.com Music: “Clap Along” by Auditionauti: https://audionautix.com [00:00:00] Jamin Brazil: Hi everybody, live from CRC here in Dallas, Texas. Sergio Oliveri. [00:00:07] Sergio Oliveri: Yes. Sergio Oliveri, yup. [00:00:08] Jamin Brazil: Oliveri. Excuse me. Net Base Quid is the name of this. [00:00:13] Sergio Oliveri: Net Base Quid, got to love that name, right? [00:00:15] Jamin Brazil: Tell me a little bit about the company. [00:00:16] Sergio Oliveri: Yeah, so Net Base Quid is an AI-powered consumer market intelligence tool. So basically we do social media listening and news media research. [00:00:28] Jamin Brazil: Got you. [00:00:28] Sergio Oliveri: Yeah. So it's a platform somebody subscribes to and then they get it for a year. And we have like billions of sources. It's crazy. There's. [00:00:38] Jamin Brazil: So tell me about the use case. [00:00:39] Sergio Oliveri: Yeah, so for instance one of our customers, we work with a lot of big name brands, Yum Brands, Taco Bell. And we had a board member on the stage here at CRC in Dallas and he was talking about how he was part of the Taco Bell. He was the CMO of Taco Bell. And there's a lot of different use cases with Taco Bell but one of my favorites is – so they're trying to figure out how can they kind of – what could they do differently; what kind of – what's out there; what are people talking about. And they discovered a big connection between Doritos and Taco Bell. So Doritos Locos Tacos. [00:01:20] Jamin Brazil: So they made that connection because they're utilizing your platform and they saw the crossover? [00:01:23] Sergio Oliveri: Yeah, exactly. So it kind of fuels the research. [00:01:27] Jamin Brazil: Understood. So it's like fodder for ideas and projects. [00:01:30] Sergio Oliveri: Right. And it's in real time. So even like Dick Clark Productions, they did one of these big award shows that they do and they have like this war room. So you could see host A, host B. They saw host A wasn't doing as good as host B so they gave host B more stage time and they pivoted. [00:01:48] Jamin Brazil: Yeah, makes sense. I love that. [00:01:51] Sergio Oliveri: There's so many cool use cases. Go to NetBaseQuid.com/resources and you could see all of our testimonials and. [00:01:58] Jamin Brazil: Cool. We're in person at CRC, which is pretty cool. [00:02:01] Sergio Oliveri: Isn't it great? [00:02:02] Jamin Brazil: Yeah, what do you think about that? [00:02:03] Sergio Oliveri: Right. I've been – my only commuting has been from my bedroom to my living room. Yeah. So now I get to actually get on a plane and go places, but I love it. I talked to a lot of people at this event too and they're all loving it and you know it's kind of a hybrid. It's a virtual and in person. And I still think you know this is the first event that I've been to since COVID, right, first conference. So it's good to be back and I mean just a little plug here, we're doing our live conference, Net Base Quid Live in New York and LA. So New York is going to happen November. [00:02:36]

Meet Andy Peterson. He is the founder and principal at Docs/ology, an initiative of Aspiration Ventures for promoting extraordinary documentary films through grassroots marketing & publicity and its companion editorial platform, DocsologyFilms.com. Since 2005, Peterson also has been involved in helping to launch dozens of independent and studio feature films and TV series, including projects from A24, Abramorama, AMC, Dick Clark Productions, Focus Features, FOX, IFC Films, National Geographic, Neon, NBC, Paramount Pictures, Participant Media, Roadside Attractions, Sony Pictures and more. But he wants to tell a different story. “The life that I've observed, the life that I've lived, is not one so far — at least that I have found — that if I pray hard enough, my life always works the way I want it to,” Peterson says. “That's not what I've experienced. I hear a lot of that, I hear a lot of that in Christian entertainment and I certainly hear a lot of that in some of the faith-based films that are out there, but that's just not my experience. “My experience is that life doesn't work, that I can't make it work, that I do need a Savior and that is the intersection that I'm interested in, in films that tell that real story, and sometimes the gritty, raw, hard story, of what it feels like to be human on this earth, in this broken place we live in.” Peterson serves on the Narrative Feature jury for the Nashville Film Festival and is the creator of the Justice Film Festival, an emerging film festival that takes place in New York City that has been shining a light on social justice since 2012. He is a graduate of Taylor University and has lived in Nashville for 25 years with his wife Becky. They have three children.

Absolutely loved having JoAnna Beckson on Dystopia Tonight. I had the pleasure of taking her Meisner class when I was a young comic and what I learned from her is invaluable both as a teacher and now as a friend. We discuss how she got into acting/directing, having the neighborhood kids put on a show she directed at the age of 5, to back packing through Europe, falling in love with another actor in her troupe, being trained by Sanford Meisner, auditioning, diving into teaching and directing, and working with comedians like myself, Joe Starr, Rob Bartlett, Ted Alexandro, Jim Gaffigan, Ray Romano, Dave Attell (the list goes on!) and how the business has and will continue to reshape itself after covid. Enjoy! Check out her official bio below: JoAnna Beckson was trained as an actress and teacher by Fred Kareman, William Esper and Sanford Meisner of the Neighborhood Playhouse. She has worked extensively as an actress and director both Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway in such theaters as The Ensemble Studio Theater, Intar II, The Working Theater and Woman's Interart. She is also a founding member of New York City's prestigious Circle Repertory Company's LAB. Along with being a consultant for Disney and Paramount Studios, JoAnna has maintained the dual career of Actress/Director and Teacher of acting in New York City for many years. “Say Something Funny”, an original dramedy she conceived, directed and co-produced at the Criterion Center-Broadway, was optioned for sitcom development by Nelle Nugent, a five-time Tony Award winning producer, and by Dick Clark Productions. JoAnna's involvement in the daily “business” of acting gives her special insight toward helping actors develop their craft and solve the problem of finding work. For the past fifteen years, JoAnna has also been an Adjunct Professor at New York University's School of Professional Studies as well as the Graduate Film Department at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. JoAnna also leads workshops at the School of Visual Arts, and the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts.

Show Notes It is so good to be back in studio. I so prefer working with you in here rather than remotely in my home office. Now that’s odd coming from an introvert. But I think perhaps I am only a “partial introvert,” I still enjoy live conversations with interesting people. And “interesting” certainly describes our guest today. I have known Haley Chapman for longer than fifteen years, all beginning when she was just 9 or 10 years old. And in the meantime Haley has grown up to become an impressive and enthusiastic young woman with unique talents and most challenging dreams. Her bio reads: Haley Chapman is a young entertainment industry professional living in Los Angeles, CA. Most recently she has worked as a publicist at multiple record labels, television and film production studios, including Dick Clark Productions. Haley is also a most gifted singer / songwriter, having released her first EP at 18 years old. She attended Belmont University in Nashville, TN, where she received her degree in Music Business and Entertainment Industry Studies. I am keenly interested in chatting with Haley about the challenging and ultra competitive journey of a brilliant and creative artist. With that let’s bring Haley Chapman on the show. The Emmy-nominated TV writer and professor, Sandy Fries, joined me this week to talk about the lessons he learned over his storied, 20-year career in Hollywood, and how he wrote hundreds of popular TV episodes, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, NBC’s Quantum Leap, and Spider-Man: The Animated [TV] Series. "We all have cracks, the sun shines through those cracks, and through those cracks is how one human being connects to another." – Sandy Fries Sandy has rubbed elbows with an incredible assortment of media moguls including Sam Simon, co-creator of The Simpsons – who gave Sandy his first break – Marvel's Stan Lee, Star Trek's Gene Rodenberry, and Chuck Lorre of The Big Bang Theory fame. He's written for almost every TV genre and has had feature film and television development deals with Warner Brothers and Dick Clark Productions throughout his career. In addition to his Emmy nod he recently won the 101 Best Written TV Series in the History of Television award from the Writer’s Guild of America, for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Sandy continues to write and share his wisdom with students as a Professor of Film and Mass Communication at the College of DuPage. He recently poured many of his life lessons into the book, Secrets Your Textbook Will Not Tell You: About TV, Movies and Life, "... a view of Mass Communication, Film and TV from the down and dirty perspective [of] over twenty years..." in the industry. Please help us learn more about you by completing this short 7-question survey A quick note, I'm changing up the format of the show to present longer episodes presented in a single part, as opposed to two-parters split for a shorter, drive-time experience. Reach out on Twitter or over at writerfiles.fm if you like the longer episode format better, I appreciate your feedback. In this file Sandy Fries and I discussed: Why his most revered TV writing credit is a cartoon How Sandy ditched his job in advertising and got a big break The writing life and lessons learned from master storytellers and titans of the TV industry Down-to-earth life advice and secrets to nailing that pitch meeting Stories behind his friendship with Stan Lee, and why Spider-Man was such a big hit How he missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime And how to persevere through good times and bad Show Notes: Sandy Fries on IMDB Secrets Your Textbook Will Not Tell You: About TV, Movies and Life by Sandy Fries [Amazon] Kelton Reid on Twitter Please click the PayPal Donate button to support The Writer Files with a secure PayPal donation

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal
Sky Moore joins Online Editor Anthony Zangrillo on the Fordham IPLJ Podcast to discuss the recent implosion of certain China-Hollywood co-production financing deals. Sky is a partner in the corporate entertainment department of Stroock, practicing entertainment, corporate, and tax law. Sky has been practicing in the entertainment industry since 1981, and represents a broad spectrum of clients throughout the entertainment industry, including producers, sales agents, foreign distributors and financiers, and has handled some of the largest financing transactions in Hollywood. Earlier in March, Eldridge Industries, which owns TV unit Dick Clark Productions, terminated the $1 billion sale agreement with Wang Jianlin's Dalian Wanda Group decided upon in November. Wanda had only paid $25 million of this purchase price. Additionally, Paramount’s deal with Huahua Media and Shanghai Film Group is floundering because Paramount hasn’t seen a cent of the promised $1 billion. Even though Hollywood deals fall apart all the time, there appears to be less security in these Chinese-invested projects. Are Chinese film investors just “tourist investors,” arriving with great fanfare, taking meetings with players across town, kicking the tires of every studio and production company that may be interested in Chinese investment, suggesting that a deal might be imminent, and then going back to China without agreeing to anything? Furthermore, is this a bigger issue because the Chinese yuan is a regulated currency? Are the fractured deals more of a result of the government rather than the film studios? Chinese regulators appear to be clamping down on foreign investment deals, due to the hundreds of billions of dollars leaving the country. The podcast addresses these issues and speculates on what movie subject will finally be the breakaway co-production hit both Hollywood and China are searching for. Don’t forget to also subscribe to the podcast on iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/fordham-intellectual-property/id1158550285?mt=2) and leave a review! Editor's Note: This podcast was recorded before President Trump's reversed his position on labeling China a currency manipulator.

Walberg has hosted and been featured in an array of popular talk, reality competition, and game shows, including the FOX hit The Moment of Truth. He also has hosted home improvement competitions The Mansion andHouse Rules, knowledge quiz shows Test the Nation and Russian Roulette, and won The Weakest Link as a contestant playing for charity.
