The 2025 Frew annual deserves a stand alone review and we spend a good 70 minutes dissecting it. The theme for this years annual is a monster theme with 8 stories with a mixture of colour & black and white over 220+ pages. What do we like, what do we not like and what rating do we give it? Listen and or watch and find out. Do not remember to let us know what you agree and or disagree with. Annuals are nothing new from around the world with British comics publishing them in hardcover albums during the 1950's to the 1980's as well as other countries publishing them. Frew published their first annual in 1991 and it was an instant hit. Frew published their first one in 1991 and it was an instant hit. Rumours are that it sold out overnight and many collectors bought dozens as investments. Ever since, Frew has released an annual. Bar the odd year (3?), a replica edition of the Frew comics have been released. Loved by some and loathed by others but they are a staple along with the annual.Since the Frew Crew has stood in the gap left by Jim Shepherd, they have released themed annuals with War, artists, Girl Phantom, Cowboy Phantoms, Animals of Edan and now its The Phantom vs The Monsters. For those who want to cherry pick there way through the podcast, we have listed what we disscused and the time stamps. We would however suggest you listen / watch to the whole podcast ;)History & background of the Frew annuals: 2 MinutesOverall thoughts on the annual: 4 Minutes & 30 SecondsStories"The Ghost and the Wolves" by Andrew Constant and Jason Paulos: 17 Minutes & 30 Seconds"Nema" by Andrew Constant and Jason Paulos: 24 Minutes"Looking Back" by Andrew Constant and Giancarlo Caracuzzo: 29 Minutes"Golem" by Johan L. Dean is one of my favourite Aussie artists and a really nice guy! We discuss al manner of topics related to his work and also dealing with anxiety in a public forum. He has a great attitude and whilst a self confessed introvert, speaks with a humble and gracious spirit for the people he meets and draws for. It's a great insightful chat and I hope you enjoy it.
Oh, Muffin Fluffer! Skottie Young joins us for a deep dive discussion about his creative process, his obsession with relationship stories, and what we can expect when I Hate Fairyland returns in July. Right now, we're witnessing a significant moment in his creative evolution. With books like Strange Academy and The Me You Love in the Dark, Skottie plunges into himself and pulls out relatable turmoil for all of us to consume. In the process, we all become better people. Teaming up with fellow creators like Dean Rankine, Fábio Moon, and Gabriel Bá, Skottie Young is building toward I Hate Fairyland's return with his Stupid Fresh Mess Substack release, The Unbelievable, Unfortunately Mostly Unreadable and Nearly Unpublishable Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland. By inviting others to his party, he solidifies his world as one of the greats. The episode we didn't want to end!! We are joined by superstar creator and bad boy of Australian comics, Dean Rankine. We recap his comic journey to date as we chat about how he got started with Simpsons, his brush with Matt Groening, and memorable experiences at SDCC. He shares how keeping busy opened doors over the past twenty years, from Indie books like Itty Bitty Bunnies, to Rick and Morty and I Hate Fairyland to to the recently published smash hit, Timmy The Ticked Off Pony written by comedy genius Magda Szubanski! Dean takes time to share his favourite collectibles, from signed gems to vintage toys and explains why he's, according to Neville the KING of Cat MEME's. We could not close without revealing one of your hosts have started growing their ISO Tiger King mullet, and made Dean promise to join us for part two of this amazing chat in a future episode.
From a young age, all Dean Rankine wanted to do was draw. While today, Dean is a well established Australian comic book artist, he'd still describe himself as a big hairy kid - but a kid who has now worked for a range of companies and a variety of titles including Australian MAD magazine, The Simpsons comic book for Boingo and a cover for the Rick and Morty comic. Dean is now a popular mainstay on the Australian pop culture convention scene, and has developed his own fan following with his popular 'Simpson-ised' portraits of guests at each event. Dean has also started a recent podcast which we encourage you to check out: it's called The Ogres Basement Podcast, and you should totally check it out.
In Episode 107 of X-Band: The Phantom Podcast, we are delighted to bring you a recording of a The Phantom panel from Brisbane Supanova on November 10, 2018.While the topic as advertised in the program was promising, unfortunately the Supanova team did not exactly bring together a heap of Phantom experience for the panel. Established cover artist Jamie Johnson certainly brought credibility with him. However it is fair to say that co-panelists Tom Taylor, Ryan K Lindsay and Dean Rankine, while amazing writers and incredible talents in their fields, are less well-versed in Phantom lore.Even so, no one was more surprised than X-Band podcaster and covertly-recording audience member Dan when Tom got down from the panel stage and swapped seats with him about 15 minutes in, after he made what he thought would be a short appearance with an audience comment on a point Dean had made, Jamie was very gracious in sharing his first ever Con panel with a ChronicleChamber blow-in and had some very nice words to say about the work we doKeep a special ear out for Jo, whose statements from the audience really have the potential to resonate with a lot of Phantom phans.Special thanks to all panel members - especially Tom Taylor - as well as the moderator for being accommodating enough to bring ChronicleChamber onto the stage and contribute in some way to the conversation.Happy Phantoming!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chroniclechamber)
