Part of enjoying photography is understanding photography. What makes a “good” photo? How much of that is based on the circumstances around its creation? In this episode, we talk about looking at photography with a critical eye. My guest is Dorothy Schultz, curator of the James Dean Museum We had a great talk about this thriving tribute to an actor who burned bright in his short life and left an enduring legacy. The museum is home to the largest collection of Dean artifacts and attracts visitors from around the world. It is also deeply loved and supported by the surrounding community, which includes Dean's family. Dorothy shared stories about the museum and the annual festival it hosts, tips about how to make the most of a visit, and what Dean means to her as an artist and influential figure. It's easy to forget that your camera is more than just a box that records light. It's a sophisticated computer with a huge amount of control over the light that hits the sensor. In this episode we talk about why it's important to (gasp) read the manual, experiment with features, and gain a better understanding of the camera's capabilities. This isn't just an exhortation to RTFM, but a practical look at what you can get out of it. 17. Ian Treherne shares his photographic memory: the infamous image of James Dean walking across a rainy Times Square, NYC. The photograph was created by Dennis Stock for LIFE Magazine in 1955 and Ian has felt an attachment to the image, the story behind it and the subject since he was a child. Ian Treherne is a portrait photographer based in the UK and has a genetic condition called RP Type 2 Usher Syndrome, meaning he is legally blind and deaf. Due to this, he has faced incredible hardship and yet has an attitude of optimism and strength.Ian explores these challenges, which led him to depression and suicidal ideation, how he manages to overcome them and discusses a turning point in his life, when he was asked to give a keynote speech at a TED X conference. He has worked with the likes of Rankin, Channel 4 and the Paralympic Games, spreading a message of inclusivity and speaking our for the rights of the disadvantaged. In conversation with Vogue, Mr Porter & New York Times photographer Jonathan Daniel Pryce aka GarçonJon. It is an honor to present the one year anniversary episode of Calling Old Hollywood, with my guest, James Dean's cousin Mr.Marcus Winslow and later in the episode, James Dean's best friend in life, Mr.Lew Bracker. It was a great pleasure to travel to Fairmount, Indiana hometown of Jimmy, and record this episode with Marcus whilst on the farm they both grew up on. Marcus was gracious to share his personal memories of his cousin James Dean, who was like a brother to him. We discuss everything from the town of Fairmount, to Jimmy's Acting and racing, the impact he's had on the world, how Marcus would like Jimmy to continue to be remembered, the photos Dennis Stock took of the two when Markie was just a boy, and so much more. We also have a very special guest Lew Bracker towards the end of the episode, whom Marcus and Lew both share stories of their own friendship and bond, and life with and without Jimmy.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/callingoldhollywood)
Welcome to Episode #1 of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast! Host Diana Linn met and had a conversation with Singer/Songerwriter Ilona Pal in Montreal, Canada during the 2019 Folk Alliance International Conference. They quickly established a connection not only via Ilona's music, but through the spirit of Hollywood icon James Dean. Ilona Pal has traveled the rails between Montreal and Ottawa many times over, but in November of 2017, that train ride, and a movie about friendship, love and loss inspired a song that gave her wings to fly. The movie was the 2015 feature film “Life”: the story of photographer Dennis Stock’s historic 1955 photo shoot of iconic actor James Dean in Fairmount, Indiana, for that still famous spread in Life Magazine. “The song was a gift,” says Ilona. “I wasn’t looking to write a song about James Dean that day, the song was looking for me”. But when the last frame of the film faded to black and the words ‘James Dean died 6 months later’ appeared on the screen, she felt a wave of emotion well-up in her chest. That wave soon reached her creative spirit, and all at once, most of the lyrics and melody that would become A Farm In Indiana were born. Pal first emerged as an independent Canadian New Country artist with her debut single Hold On Heart and self-titled album. She landed a spot on the roster at Peter Asher Management in LA, alongside such notable artists as Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. French recordings of her songs have ranked #1 in Quebec and received ADISQ award nominations. Film credits include the closing theme song for Time At The Top (Showtime, HBO). Learn all things Ilona Pal here.
Dennis Stock was a photographer who took some of the most famous photographs that most of us have seen. I bet a lot of you already know about Dennis Stock and his work. On this podcast we have celebrity photographer Randall Slavin. Randall talks about how he became a photographer, his unique skill sets, how he directs his celebrity subjects, and how he gets the shot. This podcast offers great insight into how to succeed in the photography game. "Randall Slavin was born in Hollywood,CA. Mr. Slavin was working a dead end job in a gas station when he wandered into a local photography studio and struck up a friendship with the owner. He took the young Mr. Slavin under his wing and taught him some photography basics and then promptly fired him a few months later. Faced with nowhere else to turn he put one foot in front of the other and he has never looked back. He had his photography debut in the prestigious New York Times Magazine. His work has appeared in GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone and many others. Randall Slavin had his first exhibit in Paris in 2008 and a solo show at Annenberg Space For Photography in 2011. He received the 2011 Hollywood Style Award for "Photographer Of The Year" and currently splits his time between LA and NYC." www.randallslavin.com References in this podcast: http://www.kinoflo.com/ http://www.bruceweber.com/ http://benwatts.com/ http://glenluchford.com/ http://www.peterlindbergh.com/ http://www.faheykleingallery.com/ http://peterbeard.com/the-artist/ exhibit http://www.williamclaxton.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Stock http://theartofphotography.tv/EPISODES/AVEDON-DOVIMA/ http://anthony-meyer.tumblr.com/ http://www.herbritts.com/ http://www.thehappypixelproject.com/ http://www.randallslavin.com/STORIES/Michael-J-Fox/2 http://www.randallslavin.com/STORIES/Ben-Stiller/1 Randall's supporting cast: Noah Schutz http://www.noahschutz.com/ Keith Leman http://www.otmfc.com Eric Larson http://ewlarsonstudio.com David Malykont Leigh Anderson and Kim Tran http://artmixcreative.com/randallslavin/gallery/overview/ Learn more about Randall and his latest projects here: http://www.randallslavin.com https://www.instagram.com/randallslavin http://artmixcreative.com/randallslavin/gallery/overview/ Learn more about Charles and his latest projects here: Website: http://www.lucima.com Instagram: https://instagram.com/charleslucima Facebook: http://facebook.com/charleslucima tumblr: http://lucima.tumblr.com Podcast: http://lucima.podomatic.com Music courtesy of https://www.freesound.org/people/monkeyman535/sounds/326639/
