Our guest this week is Author and Old Hollywood Historian, Ralph Schiller. He is an Author known for his books on 1950’s American stage, film, radio, and television actor, Broderick Crawford (Broderick starred in 1950’s Television series Highway Patrol). Ralph is also very well versed in Old Hollywood History, and has a very special interest in twin Actresses Anna Maria Pierangeli, and Marisa Pavan. His interest in Broderick Crawford began when he first saw 1954 Noir/Crime Drama ‘Down three Dark Streets’ with Marisa Pavan. In this episode we talk about Broderick Crawford, Old Hollywood, how he decided to write these books, and of course — Anna Maria Pierangeli and Marisa Pavan. This episode is special because Anna Maria Pierangeli was the only love of James Dean, and this story is seldom spoken of from the perspective of those who know a great deal about Anna (or Pier Angeli as Hollywood knows her). Anna died at the tender age of 39 in West Hollywood, California in 1971. As James Dean said about Lew Bracker, “This is Lew— he’s one of the good ones.” Lew is a man who had no desire to make it in the entertainment business- an insurance salesman though as fate would have it, became the best friend of James Dean for the last 18 months of his life. Lew also had a lasting friendship with Steve McQueen, and several encounters with Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe among countless other icons in Old Hollywood. Lew had a wonderful racing career (he’s responsible for introducing James Dean to Porsche’s), was responsible for the first black Porsche, became an author of 2 books (with a third on the way) and I had the extraordinary opportunity to sit with him last week in Palm Springs, as he waxed poetic on his life, his close friendship with Jimmy, his poetry, life philosophies, and so much more. This episode is very special, and I am extremely thankful to our friends Odessa & James for making this possible.
