The IPL mega auction was a blockbuster affair over two days in Jeddah. It took the attention away from India's landmark Perth Test win, but cricket fans must have enjoyed the bidding wars. The two marquee sets of players grabbed all the limelight in the lead-up to the auction ever since the pruned list of 574 players was announced for the mega auction. As expected, a few teams splurged big money on big faces, who opted to enter the auction after successful stints with their ex-franchises. Some of them had nasty break-ups.Punjab Kings, who are not known for being smart in the auction, were led wonderfully well by newly appointed coach Ricky Ponting and their think tank in Jeddah.Royal Challengers Bengaluru faced the stick for missing out on big buys, but it seems it was a conscious choice as they resisted the temptation of spending big on Day 1. Under Andy Flower and Dinesh Karthik, RCB made smart buys throughout the two-day auction, impressing their fans. Barring the Will Jacks controversy, RCB did all right. What do you make of the teams' performances on the auction table? In the latest episode of the Sliding Room Podcast, Akshay Ramesh, Saurabh Kumar, and Kingshuk Kusari review the IPL auction.Tune in!Produced and Sound mixed by Anna Priyadarshini

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Monday, September 1, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started. The Adani Group plans to invest $1 billion in acquiring packaged consumer goods brands in southern and eastern India. Anirudh Laskar reports that the investment will be made through its subsidiary, Adani Wilmar. This move is part of the group's strategy to expand its presence in the fast-moving consumer goods segment. Adani Wilmar aims to make multiple acquisitions over the next few years and anticipates a surge in demand for its products. The Group has previously used this strategy in other sectors too, like renewable energy and the cements business. India's audit authority plans to close a loophole that lets companies escape scrutiny over fund misuse by making lead auditors of conglomerates more responsible. This addresses a gap in accounting standards that let main auditors depend on subsidiary auditors without accountability. Gireesh Chandra Prasad writes that the previous practice posed a potential risk and additional burden for auditors. The National Financial Reporting Authority aims to issue new, stricter guidelines to ensure lead auditors fully oversee and answer for the entire group's financial statements — this would be aligned more with global practices. In July, a massive digital attack on a popular cryptocurrency platform led to half the depositors losing their money. India's largest crypto platform WazirX saw a massive attack that led to a huge chunk of their user base of 42 lakh people lose some money. But since this is a decentralised currency, the government isn't safeguarding investors. Neil Borate and Anil Poste spoke to investors who lost their money in this attack, who have no redressal mechanisms so far. A lack of regulatory clarity and no action from WazirX has baffled those who used the platform to buy crypto currencies. Even though online betting is mostly illegal in India, global betting platforms are finding clever ways to sneak back into public view. They're popping up everywhere, from digital ads to sports jersey sponsorships, and they're using celebrities to grab attention. For instance, cricketer Dinesh Karthik and actor Jacqueline Fernandez are just a few of the faces you might see promoting brands like Parimatch and FairPlay India. These companies are cleverly leveraging the massive social media followings of these celebrities to reach millions, despite ongoing government crackdowns on such ads. Varuni Khosla reports on how betting apps in India are circumventing the legal hurdles with the help of surrogate advertising.  Food prices in India have been persistently high, driven by a combination of climatic events and policy responses. According to RBI data, food inflation has been notably higher in recent years, averaging 6.3% from June 2020 to June 2024, compared to 2.9% in the previous four years. Consumers have felt the pinch of rising prices, but farmers haven't necessarily benefited proportionately. High market prices for crops like pulses and vegetables often result from reduced production due to climate impacts rather than increased farmer income. Rainfall plays a critical role in agricultural output and, consequently, in food prices. The India Meteorological Department's forecast of a wet September could affect the Kharif crops, with potential for both beneficial and adverse impacts depending on the timing and intensity of the rains. Sayantan Bera examines how a bountiful monsoon could result in a fall in prices of food crops. That's all for today. Thank you for listening. We're eagerly looking forward to our next Top of the Morning episode, which will be packed with fresh business news. Until then, have a great day!

Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma debate who should be India's wicketkeeper for the Men's T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and America. India have potentially seven options who could take the gloves. Rishabh Pant is the frontrunner after having a stellar season so far in the Indian Premier League for the Delhi Capitals, but he has not played for India since being involved in a car accident in December 2022, where he injured his knee. Other names to consider are KL Rahul, Sanju Samson and Dinesh Karthik.   Plus, we speak to Adelaide Oval Head Curator Damian Hough who has been tasked with creating the pitches that will be used in America at the World Cup including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan. He shares his experiences of starting the process in Adelaide and details the plans transporting the pitches 2,000 kilometres from Florida to New York. And after Freddie Flintoff's sons are hitting the headlines in England for their cricketing skills, we look at cricketing families around the world and look at the pressure that brings. Recorded on 18 April, we discuss the record-breaking runfest at the Chinnaswamy, which saw a Travis Head century, plus excellent innings and giant sixes from Heinrich Klaasen, Dinesh Karthik and many others. There's also praise for Jos Buttler's remarkable effort for Rajasthan, as they chased down KKR's 223-6 off the final delivery, meaning Sunil Narine's hundred was in a losing cause. The trend of praising wicketkeepers continues with Dinesh Kathik also mentioned in despatches for his effort in a losing cause against the Sunrisers. Some sides are making a run (we're looking at you Sunrisers and the resurgent Delhi Capitals) whereas the Gujarat Titans look to be in a big hole. Are they done for the season, or is there life yet? The RCB Podcast powered by Kotak Mahindra Bank - How the IPL changed my life

EatSure presents The RCB Podcast - Game Changers with Dinesh Karthik If you watched even a little bit of the 2022 IPL season, you'll know how much of a game-changer DK was for us at RCB. He finished the season with the best strike-rate for any batter with at least 200 runs. At the same time, the season itself was a game-changing one in DK's career. All the hard work from the past few years came together brilliantly. The Indian selectors couldn't ignore him any longer. This was a man who was Player of the Match in India's very first T20I back in 2006, and in 2022, at the age of 37, he found his rightful place playing for India in the T20 World Cup as one of the best finishers in the country. How did this transformation come about? Listen to him tell us. EatSure is proud to partner with Royal Challengers Bangalore for the RCB Podcast. T20 World Cup - South Africa v India Review

Host Carl Lewis and cricket punter Lwanele Poswayo review the Proteas' massive win over India in the T20 World Cup. An astonishing display of fast bowling from South Africa's Lungi Ngidi and half-centuries from David Miller and Aiden Markram saw South Africa to a nail-biting five-wicket victory against India in their T20 World Cup match at the Perth Stadium on Sunday. India collapsed to 49-5 after choosing to bat first before recovering to a total of 133-9 but South Africa stumbled to 40-3 at the halfway stage of the run chase before a fourth-wicket stand of 76 saw them accelerate to victory with just two balls to spare with Miller keeping cool under intense pressure to finish unbeaten on 59 from 46 balls with four fours and three sixes. Suryakumar Yadav fought a brilliant, lone battle for India with a remarkable 68 from just 40 balls (6x4, 3x6) while the next highest score was just 15.   South Africa's four-man pace attack complimented each other impressively and, although it was man-of-the-match Ngidi who claimed 4-29 the other three quicks all contributed to India's demise on a fast, bouncy pitch in the Western Australian capital. South Africa struggled desperately for the first 10 overs of the run-chase limping to 40-3 having been 3-2 and 24-3 with left-arm swing bowler, Arshdeep Singh, claiming wickets with his first and third deliveries. Quinton de Kock (1) edged an outswinger to second slip and Rilee Rossouw (0) was trapped lbw by an inswinger. Captain Temba Bavuma again struggled with 10 from 15 balls before attempting a ramp shot against Mohammad Shami and edging into the gloves of Dinesh Karthik. Markram and Miller stabilised the innings but at drinks, there were still 94 runs required from the final 10 overs. A change of gear from Markram saw 16 runs accrue from the 11th over from Hardik Pandya and 17 from the 14th bowled by Ashwin to seemingly put South Africa back on track with 35 runs required from the final five overs with seven wickets in hand. But a mistimed pull against Pandya to Yadav at deep midwicket saw Markram depart for 52 from 41 balls with six fours and a six. Offspinner Ashwin started the 18th over with South Africa requiring 24 runs from the final three overs but Miller calmed South African nerves – and kept his own – to hit two sixes back over the bowler's head to reduce the target to 12 runs from 12 balls before Tristan Stubbs (6) was trapped lbw. Earlier India openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul struck a legside six apiece but otherwise adopted a cautious approach before Rohit (15 off 14 balls) spliced a hook shot against Ngidi's second delivery lobbing a tame return catch to the bowler. Ngidi struck again with his sixth ball when Rahul (9 off 14 balls) edged a fierce lifter to Markram at deep slip with the total at 26-2 after five overs. There was no respite with Virat Kohli (12) failing to control a hook shot in Ngidi's next over and offering a simple catch to Kagiso Rabada at fine leg before Deepak Hooda (0) was beaten for pace by Anrich Nortje and edged to ‘keeper de Kock. India's top-order disintegration was completed in Ngidi's third over – the ninth of the innings – when Hardik Pandya (2) mistimed another hook shot to fine leg where Rabada claimed a magnificent, diving second catch of the innings. Dinesh Karthik contributed just six from 15 balls to a sixth-wicket stand of 52 with Yadav before slashing a Wayne Parnell delivery to Rossouw at cover and there were further wickets for Parnell when Ashwin (7) heaved a slower ball to mid-on for Rabada's third catch and Yadav miscued a clever slower ball to Keshav Maharaj at mid-off. Parnell, bowling two overs in the Power Play and two at the end of the innings, returned a sensational analysis of 4-1-15-3 while Nortje (4-0-23-1) and Rabada (4-0-26-0) did their jobs superbly. The victory moves South Africa above India to the top of the log and victory against Pakistan in Sydney on Thursday will all but secure their place in the semifinals.   INDIA: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Arshdeep Singh SOUTH AFRICA: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma (captain), Rilee Rossouw, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

But Sid and Aayush didn't miss a beat, with enough jabs about Dinesh Karthik, the England cricket team, and the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, not to mention what has become the usual complication of recording right before the start of a new series, so that our genius panelists are previewing matches that then get over before the episode actually gets published. For the record, Sidstradamus' prediction of India's Men in Blue winning the ODI series vs England 2-1 is still on, after they won the first ODI. (Aditya wants it on record now that his pre-series prediction was 3-0 to India, and he sees no reason to change it after the first match.) Long before he became respected journalist (and now disrespected former journalist, apparently), back when Aditya was just starting off as a sportswriter, he had a client who liked to say: expect the unexpected. It's a lesson that should have stuck, so that you can avoid egg on your face from doing stupid things like predicting a 4-0 whitewash of England only for India to lose a home Test against England by a whopping 227 runs. So now, after James Anderson managed to find the one cloud in Chennai and the one spot on the pitch covered by said cloud, and Jack Leach discovered his favorite pair of Specsavers between innings so he could see where on the pitch to bowl on Day 5, India are suddenly sweating about reaching the World Test Championship final. Which looked a foregone conclusion after they won in Australia. This disastrous Test loss was enough to get us back together for an express episode, just so Siddhant could let us know which Indian player is quickly reaching Dinesh Karthik status in his mind, and we could make more predictions. Were we any smarter this time around? You can see for yourself…

It might not be the series win that New Zealand cricket fans were hoping for when India landed on these shores, but that doesn't make the Black Caps' Twenty20 triumph any less impressive.A four-run victory at Seddon Park in Hamilton tonight sealed a 2-1 series win, as New Zealand bounced back from their ODI humbling to become the first team to beat India in a Twenty20 series in 11 attempts.Yes, this was an achievement that no team had managed since 2017, and while India weren't at full strength, the destructive batting on show by some versatile players is something that should provide some confidence as the ODI World Cup looms. While neither will feature in the first two ODIs against Bangladesh this week, Colin Munro and Tim Seifert both made their cases as potentially devastating squad options to take to the World Cup, once again combining for an innings-defining stand at the top of the order.Considering the Black Caps can't buy an opening partnership in ODI cricket, it's curious, though likely coincidental, that they have twice now blazed dominant beginnings at the top of the order in Twenty20s.Seifert proved his innings in Wellington wasn't a fluke with a bold 43 from 25 balls, before he fell, stumped, and potentially victim to another controversial replay decision, with debate over whether his foot was planted behind the line. Was Tim Seifert out? Photo / SKYRegardless, it was still a splendid platform set when he departed at 80-1 in the eighth over, and while Kane Williamson's insistence on early strike rotation was completely unnecessary with nine wickets in hand, Munro again showed why he is such an alluring option in short formats, blasting 72 from 40 balls.Williamson did manage to pick things up, nursing some of his trademark classic fours in his knock of 27 from 21 balls, before handing over to the hitters to finish off the innings. They, too, did their job. Colin de Grandhomme made it back-to-back contributions with 30 from 16 balls, before Daryl Mitchell (19* from 11) and Ross Taylor (14* from seven) saw the hosts set 213 for victory.Colin de Grandhomme made another handy contribution. Photo / PhotosportIt seemed like enough – only four times had a total higher than 212 been chased down in a Twenty20 international – and when Shikhar Dhawan was caught in the deep off Mitchell Santner's bowling in the first over, India's task was made even tougher. However, first Vijay Shankar (43 from 28 balls), then Rishabh Pant (28 from 12) took a liking to the bowling of Ish Sodhi, as India rattled along at a fast rate. Crucially though, the required run rate never dropped below 10 an over, and some comparatively restrictive bowling from Mitchell and debutant Blair Tickner ensured the chase remained exceptionally challenging. The pair claimed a vital wicket apiece in the middle overs, with Rohit Sharma's struggles (38 off 32) ended by Mitchell, while Tickner removed Pant with a slower full toss, ensuring India could never get on top.Hardik Pandya briefly threatened, blasting 21 from 11 balls, but cameos weren't enough, and as the required run rate got higher, India were left needing 48 from 18 balls for victory.Three balls later, that equation was a much more manageable 33 from 15, and some further lusty blows from Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya produced a jittery finish, with 16 required from the final over. However, Tim Southee held his nerve at the death, to kill India's unbeaten run.

Samar Khan and Rahul Puri are back this week to bring you the latest from the sports world. The discussion begins with the Indian Premier League, where Samar observes that not tinkering much with the team has worked to the advantage of Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. “You don’t tinker with the team too much. Once you get it right, you play the same guys,” he says. The duo discusses the importance of bowling and how IPL is not only about explosive batting. Samar compares Royal Challengers Bangalore with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where good bowling by the Sunrisers helped them find the top spot. He says that RCB couldn’t qualify despite having a great batting line-up. Rahul comments: “What makes the difference is to be able to either control that batting with good line and length bowling or take wickets.”Rahul and Samar would like to bet on the Chennai Super Kings as they remain the favourites, but Kolkata Knight Riders might prove otherwise. Rahul says: “I think Dinesh Karthik who this season is out-doing Dhoni at finishing matches… He’s just being this guy who comes in and wins KKR matches through his batting.”Rahul is satisfied with the newly appointed Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, who has a proven track record. Samar says, “The one thing that also goes in favour of Emery is that he’s kind of a low-profile guy.” Rahul comments: “I think so much of the Arsenal conundrum is not necessarily the manager, it’s the board.”Rahul adds, “Arsenal needs some major surgery. And the fans too… I don’t think they can expect instant success. I think they might have to give in two or maybe three years to try get this right.”“That’s a long time in modern day football,” comments Samar. Rahul looks at the history of the Champions League, and observes that it has witnessed changes when it comes to expected winners of the trophy. He says: “When you look back at the season, maybe 10 years from now, you’d probably put your finger on a particular season, as a season where things have changed. You’d probably see the end of a bunch of eras. Barcelona, I think there was an end of an era there.”He expects even more changes in the next seasons, full of surprises and shake-ups.Samar observes that because of everybody being busy with the upcoming FIFA World Cup, we might witness a lot of player transfers between clubs. Rahul comments, “The World Cup will always throw up lots of new success but on the other hand it will throw up a bunch of failures.” He adds, “The World Cup will push up prices again and there’ll be a sort of wage inflation.”On the upcoming Champion League Finals to be played between Real Madrid and Liverpool, Samar thinks that it’s not going to be a high-goal scoring game. He says: “Both teams will be wary of the fact that whoever concedes the goal first is going to be on the backfoot big time!”Rahul adds: “Liverpool’s best chance is to get a goal in the opening 20-25 minutes.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
