Master Mark HuttonMaster Hutton began training in 1981 under Master Sutherland who was assistant to GM MacCallum in Bathgate which is located in Central Scotland.Bathgate was a successful full-time Academy when he joined and was always steeped in TKD tradition with First Grand Master Rhee a regular visitor for grading. This ensured the Academy was ITF to the core.Master Hutton's classes always centre around the importance of ensuring all his students and Instructors are well versed in all aspects of TKD from explosive fundamentals (dynamic & static) and Tuls to Ho Sin Sul for all, with emphasis on the devastating power and skill that so many students who focus solely on competition rarely understand/enjoy. He believes this must change through education to ensure ITF TKD not only survives but flourishes and is known as both devastating Martial Art and sport at the very highest level.Body conditioning/diet with fit for purpose training is for me most important to ensure we concentrate our efforts on TKD preparation maximising our results in the Dojang.National/International competition history* British Team Captain from 1998-2004, Scottish Team Captain 2004-2007 (Retired)* Many times British pattern/Sparring Champion including 5 best competitor awards and twice overall British Taekwon-do Council Champion (BTC is all TKD groups in the UK)* Twice World bronze medallist, Individual Pattern 1997 and Team Sparring Open World TKD Championships 1991* 5 time ITF European IV Degree pattern Champion 1993-97.

Jenn Luneau from Vaughn's Dojang joined me on Dec. 28th, 2021 to talk about starting the martial arts with her family as a kid, growing up in the association, becoming a teacher and more.
Jack said he'd lost track of how many towns he'd lived in over his 16 years of life. However, he knew it was 5. His dad was career Navy, and since his last transfer, found himself off the ships and serving as a Hospital Corpsman in South Korea. Seoul South Korea? Enough was enough. Jack had spent the last 4 years of his life studying HAPKIDO, a Korean self defense system, and His Kwanjang (school owner) had actually trained in Kuri-Shi, not too far from where he was staying. Jack's dad was pulling a double shift, so he hoped a subway, stumbled through signs, mostly in English, and read the Hangul (Korean writing). Kuri-shi, that's it! That's the small town inside Seoul that his Kwanjang said his master's Dojang (dojo) was located. It was getting late and as Jack left the subway station he was immediately met by a group of tough looking boys about 17 or 18 years of age. There was 3 of them, and they immediately walked up, and greeted him, “Hi, my name is Han!” What's your name? He answered back, “I'm Jack.” As the subway train pulled away Jack DISCERNED he was alone, and something told him he shouldn't be there. All at once he was shoved from behind, and then a hard push to his shoulder threw him off balance. Jack knew he had only one chance…As he stumbled sideways the one called Han threw a really fast roundhouse kick to his ribs. He DISCERNED right away these guys were up to no good, he was in trouble, and Han was a Taekwondo fighter! Immediately Jack blocked the kick, caught his leg, painfully aware how powerful this guy kicked, and pushed him backward on the cement. Just as quickly he saw the taller one throw a huge axe kick coming straight down towards his head, Jack stepped slightly in came up under his fully extended leg and thew him backwards almost off the loading area. The third one sort of froze saying, “ani, ani, ani-yo!” which ends “no” in Korean. Just then the next train was pulling up on the other side of the platform, and Jack hurriedly stepped aboard. He was happy to see them not bothering to follow. After getting his bearings straight Jack arrived in time for the sparing session. Each time he was up to fight his opponents smiled, and were more than happy to take selfies and exchange numbers at the end of class. In self defense DISCERNMENT is essential! Had Jack not DISCERNED the intent of his attackers he might not have made it home. By the same token, his DISCERNMENT had him laughing and playing with his new found buddies even through the sparing resembled his subway encounter just 30 minutes before. In life, we are always DISCERNING everything. It's a function of being human. Unfortunately our DISCERNMENT skills seem weakened. Maybe it's the screen time, or lack of direct encounters. Maybe it's in person practice we are missing from isolation, or all the masks…In any case, human interaction is changing very rapidly, and millions of years of direct, interaction based evolution has made us who we are today. The answer is not simple, and communication methods are following Moore's Law these days, which translates to human evolution vs microprocessor evolution. In order to survive we must learn to do something microprocessors can't do…DISCERN. Our very lives depend on DISCERNING what is being communicated and reacting to it powerfully. “What is that person saying?” Listen deeply to what is really being communicated, and DISCERN…. A look at Season 3 of the hit Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai. The highly anticipated release of the former YouTube property delivers an engaging and enjoyable continuation of the Karate Kid series. While the series is corny and predictable, it is also still very watchable. It works, in part, because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is an underlying recognition throughout the series that this is entertainment for the sake of entertainment. The Cobra Kai Series has clearly done more to excite interest in martial arts practice than any other project since the original film series that spawned this project. I have heard from numbers of Dojang owners that can trace new student enrollments, even during the difficulty of the pandemic, directly to Cobra Kai viewership. That alone says a lot about how the series has connected with a generation that wasn’t even born when Daniel LaRusso fought Johnny Lawrence in the All Valley Karate Tournament. While the 3rd season continues to develop its new story line and trade off its origins, it also continues to create back stories which make the characters more multi-dimensional than those created in the John Avildsen film. The biggest weakness of the season is that it is a little light on training and fight sequences. I expect the next season, which is already in the works, will have more of these scenes because of the already foreshadowed storyline. The strength continues to be the power of William Zabka to engage, interest, and entertain. Cobrak Kai Season 3 does not disappoint.
How on earth does Tae Kwan Do, or the Way of the Foot and the Fist, help make a marriage tough enough to break boards? This week, Emily & Nate discuss how the practice of Tae Kwan Do has not only helped them survive the pandemic and create a sense of community, but also how it has helped them in their relationship. In Tae Kwan Do, the practice that it takes to prepare for combat and and hone your skills requires a lot of trust and communication, and it turns out it prepares you for the "combat" of marriage too, by way of the 6 tenets that are recited after every class. They dive into the six Tenets of Tae Kwan Do: Modesty, Perseverance, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit, Courtesy, and Integrity, and how they have helped them develop a deeper system of communication and a common framework that focuses on the internal first, so that they can be better partners both in and out of the Dojang. If you like us, do us a favor and share us with you're friends and family!Find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube Have a question or an idea for an episode? In this episode, we had the opportunity to converse with Izzy Brider, who is a Gold medal winner at the ITF World Championships and has many other accolades under her belt. She was very kind to take time off from her busy schedule to tell us more about her journey into the art of taekwondo. Starting to train from the age of six, she has come a long way and has experienced many ups and downs including an injury which took her out of competition for a year. However, she says without the failures, she would have never had the successes! Even though her instructors observed the natural talent she possessed in the sport from an early age, she would not be where she is without putting in the hard work. Izzy has always been into sports and shares the significance of it in terms of personal development, and wants to inspire the coming generation to take up martial arts or any sport, but more importantly, continue practising it for life. Thank you, Izzy. See you next week :) Our email: aspodcastlimited@gmail.com
Taekwondo has been impactful to Richard Thomas, far more than he could ever have imagined when he first signed up as a 7 year old. Starting out, Richard, the discipline in the 80's were far different than what the students now-a-days would expect. The classes were intense, and the sparring was nothing that would qualify within today's safety protocols. The integrity and discipline, also through sparring, led Richard to training and competing for the Olympics. Sideline by injury, Richard took a deep look within and reevaluated the sport he was born to do. That reset from injuries keeping Richard out of the Olympics led him into becoming an instructor, which opened up a new world of training Richard didn't see nor expect.Learn how martial arts instills life lessons anyone can carry throughout their life, to enrich their life and others around them. Also, Richard talks about becoming a Black Belt and what it takes to rise amongst the ranks to achieve Grand Master status. https://colliervilletaekwondo.com/

I had never ever thought that I wouldn't turn down anything for medical school and then the opportunity of going to space came a long. I realized that I wanted to make space part of my life and career. Sometime everything doesn't have to go to plan, as long as you keep your end-goal in mind. Dr. Shawna Pandya - Episode 546 You can get the girl out of the Dojang, but you can't get the Dojang out of the girl. It might just be a joke that Dr. Shawna Pandya tells her friends but it is solid proof of how martial arts is an important part of her life. Dr. Pandya started training at the age of fifteen, it's amazing how she hadn't turned her back to martial arts in spite of having a full list of titles in her bio including being a physician, science-astronaut candidate, and medical executive among others. In this episode, Dr. Shawna Pandya tells us not only her journey to the martial arts, but her journey that could eventually bring her across the skies.
