Discover how Chris Blair transformed from a directionless small-town teenager into a successful hospital administrator through military service, healthcare experience, and exceptional leadership skills.Chris shares his pivotal moment of clarity when he realized he needed to make a profound choice to change his life trajectory, leading him to join the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. His military experiences built the foundation for a healthcare career that spans from direct patient care to executive leadership. The conversation reveals how Chris's unique perspective—having worked at every level from patient care tech to hospital administrator—shapes his people-first leadership philosophy. "Culture eats strategy for breakfast," he explains, demonstrating how focusing on employee engagement turned struggling hospitals around during his career. When he transformed one facility's employee favorability rating from 3.2 to 4.1, the finances naturally improved too. What makes Chris's approach distinctive is his servant leadership mindset: "I am not in charge of anybody and no one works for me. I work for them." This perspective, combined with his "eat what you kill" entrepreneurial energy, created environments where healthcare teams flourish despite the industry's challenges. His candid insights about healthcare's thin 3% operating margins and the constant balance between quality care and financial sustainability offer rare glimpses into hospital administration realities.Beyond career insights, Chris discusses meeting his wife while stationed in Guam, earning his MBA with a 4.0 GPA while working through COVID, and his philosophy that failure isn't a person—it's just evidence you're trying. His journey exemplifies how military discipline, healthcare experience, and genuine care for people can create an extraordinary leadership approach. As Chris says, "All gas, no brakes."

Hello to you listening in Bedford, England!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I've known my friend Gene, a former US Navy hospital corpsman, many years since we served together at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Gene's eyesight isn't what it used to be but fortunately the Veterans Affairs offers skills training, products and services to help him better navigate obstacles that come with living daily life. All this takes place on a hospital campus where military veterans come to spend a few weeks or more. Some of those military veterans are totally blind as well as new to the VA facility. One task is to learn how to get around the campus, figure out how to make it from the dorms to the mess hall to classes. Gene said that he remembered when he got lost finding his way around. And he remembered being told that he could not say, “I am lost” when he asked for help. Instead, he was encouraged to say, "I am exploring new territory. And I need a little help."Story Prompt: What if we saw our lives through different lenses? What if we decided we are not lost, only exploring new territory? How might that change our perspective? Write that story! Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Are you a military SLP or OT? It used to be pretty complicated to start your own private practice as a member of the military since you had to relocate more often; however, that's not really the case now. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Rachael Harrelson, a decorated Navy veteran to talk about how she started a successful private practice on the side of her full-time job. Even if you aren't in the military, you'll love this episode because Rachael shares some amazing tips for starting your practice on the side, the importance of Google reviews, and becoming a health insurance provider. Rachael Harrelson, M.S. CCC-SLP is the owner of Southern Star Speech and Language Therapy in Burleson, TX. She is a Texas State licensed and nationally certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Prior to starting her practice, Rachael worked in various settings including in-patient rehabilitation, home health, and public schools. Rachael received a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at Baylor University and is a veteran of the United States Navy, where she served 8 years as a Hospital Corpsman in the medical field. Rachael has had extensive experience assessing and treating clients with autism, articulation, apraxia of speech, phonological and fluency disorders as well as pragmatic and receptive/expressive language impairments. Rachael believes in a team approach to therapy and therefore encourages collaboration with parents, teachers, and other therapists to provide the most encouraging and successful environment for her clients. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The route Rachael took to start taking insurance How Rachael utilized Facebook groups to grow her practice How military families can still start a private practice What to do if you want to move after starting your private practice How Rachael finds inspiration for her private practice How Google reviews can grow your business The importance of putting yourself out there I love seeing the ways that students in my program are making their private practice work for them. Rachael wanted to take the summer to be more present for her kids, so she did! She adjusted her schedule to include summer hours where she took 4-day weekends. It's her private practice, and she calls the shots. Everything that worked for Rachael can totally work for you too. LEARNING FROM FAILURE: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM FAILURE? Failing sucks, right? Especially when it's public and other people know about it. Whether it's missing the shot to lose the game, failing the test, getting busted for cheating, most of us try to avoid failure at all costs. A lot of times, our parents protect us from failing. They don't want us to feel bad or to miss out. But here's the deal: if we don't fail, we'll miss out on learning significant truths about life. We won't learn about persistence. We won't be able to discern what's actually most important. We won't be able to learn that our true worth comes from within, not from our reputation. We won't learn that we can handle hard things, and we will be predisposed to avoid taking risks. Once you learn to appreciate failure, the next time we're freer to take the next shot, to bounce back from the D- and go to office hours, and own our mistakes to do better. And it's been evolving ever since… As a Hospital Corpsman, Ameen earned the nickname "Doc" as he embraced a culture of order and duty. His catastrophic battlefield injury changed the course of the life he envisioned. Still, Anthony eventually chose to view his new path as one that would be watered by the nurtured outflow of the adversity he had faced. His experiences, though challenging at times, allowed him to see the potential for change and fueled an entrepreneurial spirit within him, which led to his creation of the non-profit Wings for Warriors. Under Ameen's leadership, the non-profit organization matured from an idea to a nationally recognized foundation that aims to advocate for veterans' holistic and spiritual needs, first responders, and their families. As Founder & CEO, Anthony personally counseled more than 5,000 veterans and helped launch Wings for Warriors outlets in 30 different cities across the country. It quickly became clear that the grit, determination, perseverance, and leadership capabilities "Doc" channeled in the military served him well in civilian life as an entrepreneur, an advocate, and a nationally recognized public figure. He is the face and the lifeblood of Wings for Warriors. He brings invites from national media outlets, speaking engagements at large-scale events, and sponsorships earned from Fortune 500 companies. Along the way, Doc turned his focus into co-founding and building Taylor & Lawrence, a boutique consulting firm specializing in serving the Department of Defense (DoD) and Healthcare industries by unearthing strategic business partnerships for increased performance and quality patient care. Ameen's past continues to fuel his future. And his story provokes anyone listening to realize they have not fully tapped every ounce of their potential. Anthony addresses his successes and pitfalls through his emotional and physical recovery in an uncommonly honest way, all while holding his listeners internally responsible for the changes they need to make to grow. Ameen's story incites change, triggers action, and spurs productivity. And, perhaps most importantly, it plants a seed of accountability. When he isn't traveling for speaking engagements, Anthony spends time with his wife, and their four children, at their home in Phoenix, Arizona. One of the most cost effective ways to grow your business is to build relationships with people in your community. Treating every customer like they are your friends and family. Now many companies may claim they do this, but in reality, it is all about the transaction, not long term value. There has been a glut of sales training focusing on "relationship sales process" but it just becomes another tactic. But what if you really executed on the idea? How could you develop your business to be the "go to" business for your product and service. In this episode, Dusty Sutherland, military veteran, general sales manager and now head of sales shares his views on how he focused on building relationships in his town, through charity, being present in the community and always leading with a servant's heart. He changed the way his community viewed car dealership employees. Enjoy the conversation and don't forget to subscribe and share!! An eternity ago I met a young Chris Perez, working together at REI, hiking, biking, going to school and starting our young families. We had a lot in common and became fast friends. Perez graduated and became a local police officer, serving in every possible capacity (see below). In Episode 69 Commander Perez and I discuss some of the lessons learned during his storied career and how we still have many things in common, the most obvious being our desire to be firefighters, I mean public servants. Enjoy the episode. A little more about our guest… Commander Chris Pérez, began his career with the Chandler Police Department in 1997, after serving in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. He has worked in numerous patrol positions throughout the department. In 2000 he became an investigator as part of the Neighborhood Response Team. In 2004 Pérez changed roles and became a School Resource Officer, instructing students in the Chandler Unified School District. In this assignment, Pérez created the Chandler Police Department Wilderness Experience, an outdoor, experiential education opportunity that serves middle school students. This successful program is still active today. In 2004 he returned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau as a Special Victims detective, where he investigated violent crime and crimes against children. During his tenure, Pérez oversaw some of the city's most high-profile cases and sought justice for victims. In 2012 he was promoted to sergeant and returned to patrol until 2014 when he was selected to return to the Special Victims Unit as Detective Sergeant. This provided the opportunity to oversee the direction of investigations, enhance best practices and serve as co-coordinator for the State of Arizona Child Abduction Response Team. He also served on an advisory committee in Washington D.C. developing a national protocol for sex abuse medical forensic examinations, in conjunction with the Department of Justice, the Department of Interior, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Human Health Services. In 2014, Pérez assumed leadership of the Honor Guard as an ancillary duty, and in 2015 he was promoted to lieutenant, serving as watch commander over patrol. In 2016 he was selected to lead the department's Special Investigations Section overseeing all Gang, Criminal Intelligence, Narcotics and Human Trafficking investigations. In January of 2020, Commander Perez was assigned as the Operational Support Bureau Commander. Perez oversees the daily operations of the following units: SWAT, Criminal Apprehension Unit (CAU), K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, DUI Unit, Vehicular Crimes Unit, Bike Team Unit, Training Unit, SRO Unit, Park Ranger Unit, Volunteers in Policing Unit, Detention Services Unit, and our Police Cadet Unit. Commander Pérez earned a bachelor's degree in history from Arizona State University in 1997 and holds a master's degree (2010) in education from Northern Arizona University. In his spare time, Commander Pérez is an outdoor enthusiast, an Adjunct College Professor of Justice Studies and also presents case studies and lectures throughout the United States. ____________________________ You can find the Fireground Fitness podcast wherever great podcasts are located. In this episode… If you fly frequently, you probably have the pre-takeoff safety check memorized. They always say that in case of an emergency, put the oxygen mask on your child before yourself, right? Wrong. Safety attendants always instruct flyers to put a mask on themselves before helping others — after all, it's impractical to secure others if your own safety is at risk. The same goes for data privacy and security. As an organization, you're dedicated to helping as many people as possible. But how can you do that if your data practices aren't secure? You would never think of getting on a rollercoaster without putting on a seatbelt, so why would you think of collecting data without putting effective cybersecurity practices in place first? In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels sit down with Tammy Taylor, the President of Advantum Health, to discuss the future of cybersecurity in the healthcare industry. Tammy talks about her tips for preventing security breaches, how HIPAA is falling behind with advancing technology, and why she highly recommends multi-factor authentication.

Deanna Moore White is a Gulf War Veteran who trained as a Hospital Corpsman, Medical Technologist, Autopsy Technician and Histotechnologist in the United States Navy before pursing her B.S.degreee in Biology. During her junior year in college , she started substituting and found her passion for education. She severed as a middle and high school science teacher before moving into an administrative role as a an Assistant Principal at the high school and elementary level. Currently she is pursuing her Ed. S. in Educational leadership and Ed.D. in Education System Improvement Science. Deanna is a passionate leader who believes education is the key to opportunity. Education is very powerful. Education levels the playing field for individuals internationally. It is my passion to ensure that students receive the best education possible. As a visionary leader, I see possibilities that cannot be seen when you grow up in a dysfunctional home with abusive, alcoholic, literate or helicopter parents. Although parenthood doesn't come with a manual, navigating the world is possible with the ability to read, understand what you read, asking strategic questions and being proactive instead of reactive. We can start the podcast off with bang by letting everyone know I am a United States Navy Veteran that served in the Gulf War. I served as a Hospital Corpsman, Medical Technician and a Histology Technician. This was my first career in the United States Navy, where I learned to do autopsies and identify parts of the human body using DNA during horrific accidents so parents, wifes, mothers, sisters, aunts and uncles could bury their loved ones. I discovered education while studying as a pre-med student and obtaining my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology during my Junior year of college when I substituted two to three days a week. Each time I substituted, Administrators and Assistant Principals continued to call me to come back to their school. No matter what school I substituted at during that time, I was asked to return. I was offered over ten teaching positions before graduating from college. After talking with my career counselor about the teaching profession and talking with my mentor about the stigma at the time, “Teachers don't make no money,” I received the best advice I ever heard, “ If you find something you love, “ you will make money.” I graduated and enrolled in three summer classes on education during the summer. I was committed and determined that education was my true passion and desire. Informational leadership interests me the most. Informational leaders research, prepare and strategically solve problems. Rarely are they impulsive and reactive to situations. Asking questions, looking for solutions and making difficult decisions at their strengths, but being compassionate sometimes is difficult. As an Informational leader, I strive to make human connections to support an individuals strengths so they become better from our interaction. Contact: deanmoo2@hotmail.com

22 veterans commit suicide daily. The number is overwhelming and the resources lacking for many military servicemen and women after they leave active duty service. I sat down with Odell Guynes, retired Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, who after 22 years in the military discusses his struggles as he transitioned from military to civilian life. His role in the military was unique working with several branches in his role as Hospital Corpsman. He was responsible for helping injured and ill sailors and marines. Many returning from war physically intact and mentally wounded. Like many veterans, Odell was also experiencing PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Odell shares how cannabis helped to treat the symptoms of his anxiety and the role cannabis has played in his everyday life. We take a look at how the stigma of marijuana use plays a part in the opioid crisis, overdoses and ultimately suicide for many former militaries. In this episode, we talk about the transition from military to civilian life and the challenges veterans face.
