Seoul, Korea episode Listener Story Spotlight A friend and a listener named Lois recently went to Hawaii. She told me she spent much time getting travel insurance for herself and her partner. She had to pay more than she expected as her partner was having a birthday between the day she bought the service and the day of the trip. But she said it was well worth it for her peace of mind. The FAQ for today is: Where to find the best travel insurance for a long trip abroad. 1. Start with a neutral comparison engine; you can see this in the show notes. Why use it first? Where to click Smart filters to enable It lets you price 30-day single-trip plans from dozens of underwriters side-by-side, then click through to the policy certificate in one step. Squaremouth (toggle "Comprehensive" or "Medical-only" to see apples-to-apples pricing). Squaremouth Travel Insurance Medical ≥ $100k, Evac≥ $250k, "Cancel for Any Reason" if you want maximum flexibility. Gives you consumer-written claim reviews plus AM Best financial ratings in the results grid. InsureMyTrip (same data feed as Squaremouth but different sort logic). Add "PIf relevant, existing condition waiver" if rek "Adventure sports" if you'll hike or dive. Pulls quotes from some insurers that don't feed aggregators (e.g., Allianz's higher-tier plans) and lists A.M. Best scores. TravelInsurance.com Use the "24/7 assistance" toggle to see which plans outsource helplines. Skeptical check: All three make a commission, and none of them has every carrier. Run your trip through at least two engines and see if the so-called "cheapest" plan is available. 2. Cross-reference with an independent ranking list U.S. News "Best Travel Insurance Companies 2025" ranks plans by coverage and claim-paying history—not advertising spend. It's a fast way to see which names (Travelex, Allianz, Tin Leg, etc.) consistently show up in the top tier. U.S. News 3. See what other solo women say SoloTravelerWorld.com keeps an updated "Best Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers" guide that spells out what to look for if you're traveling alone—single-supplement benefits, harassment coverage, and 24-hour crisis lines. Solo Traveler AbsolutelyLucy.com lays out five red flags that matter disproportionately to women (e.g., personal-assault medical limits, emergency contraception exclusions). Absolutely Lucy Read these before you fall for glossy Instagram ads that treat "female-friendly" as a slogan. 4. Kick the tires on the insurer's site If a plan looks good in a marketplace, open the policy certificate directly on the carrier's website (World Nomads, SafetyWing, Allianz, IMG, etc.). World Nomads publishes unfiltered claim reviews, which help sniff out chronic payout delays. World Nomads 5. Verify what your government will—or won't—do The U.S. State Department's Insurance Coverage Overseas page makes it crystal-clear that Uncle Sam does not pay your hospital bill or med-evac. It also links to the embassy medical resources for every country, which tells you how far the nearest trauma center is from your trekking trail. Travel.gov 6. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delays, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation). How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & Evac first; those two benefits can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you plan to do. Run your final four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. You can purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen, which avoids aggregator change fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less. 60-second confidence challenge 3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. Read reviews on the AirBNB website before you select. When booking a flight or train, be sure it arrives at daylight, which can differ in winter months. If it comes after dark, it will be more challenging. To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my book dives deeper—https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com See Book A for addressing all of these items. Find it on the website or Amazon. It's a series. Today's destination is: South Korea I visited South Korea last month. I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please understand that as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through the eyes of my friend Chris. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested for the night. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong. For example, the Seoul Noryyanglin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies. I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area, too. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong. I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorites for fashion. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, busses, taxis, and Ubers plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9. I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai. and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop. I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists. Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotleok desserts. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong. Recommended: Relax in a tea house. Smart Move and Slip up pairings In Korea, we were departing from the airport without enough money on our transit cards, so we could not enter the building. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue. 60 second confidence challenge Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask. Be confident when you know what the expectations are. Resources Roundup If you are looking for more solo female travel resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls, such as paying the difference on the transit card when you go long distances or knowing when to tip. When you get lost, don't get upset. Get found. You will be better off if you cool down instead of heating your brain incorrectly. Chill, and you'll be found sooner. Dr. Travelbest's tip #760.

Christine Newell spent a challenging yet life‑changing year in South Korea, working with an experimental theatre company. Grieving her father and wrestling with anxiety and imposter syndrome, she arrived in Seoul feeling lost. But soon found exactly what she needed. In this episode, she speaks openly about the mental health struggles that often shadow a career in theatre, noting that around 70 percent of people battle impostor syndrome at some point, with women hit hardest.Seoul also introduced her to Yak Sik Dong Won - “food is medicine.” Sharing plates of kimchi, galbijjim and soothing rice porridge with colleagues, she discovered how thoughtful Korean cooking and communal meals can nourish both body and mind. The most moving moment came during her first Seollal, the Korean New Year. As she watched families honour their ancestors with bows and rice‑cake offerings, her own grief shifted: “Death in Korea, much like winter, is not an ending, it's a transition.”Christine's story shows how theatre, food and ritual can guide us through loss and self‑doubt, and invites anyone standing at a crossroads to trust that balance waits on the other side of brave choices.Read : Five Season in Seoul

3-25-25 Tonight we're talking with Yoo Kwan, owner of Booze and Buzz Meadery in Seoul, South Korea. Kwan was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1988, but shortly moved out and spent most of the 90s and mid 2000s in Italy, Rome. There he was able to develop his palate on honey, as it was his first choice as a back sweetener on fruits that were usually to sour to eat (strawberry, apple etc). He also enjoyed making honey water, or sometimes with lemon juice, only to be drank cold as a energizer during hot summer and hot medicinal tea during cold winter. During his early-life in university he enjoyed not only drinking, but making cocktails with different varieties of booze, and extensively used honey to make honey flavoured wine and beer (also known as honey beer at some point in the late 2010s in Korea) Such passion for honey grew to a point where he wondered, what if you make a fermented drink out of honey, rather than mixing honey into pre-existing wine & beer? It was at that moment when he discovered mead from a PC game called Skyrim, he decided to make one for himself. The next year he teamed up with his college buddies to build a local meadery called bebee's brewery, later renamed to 3 bears Meadery, Even though they weren't the first meadery to come up, they gained more fame and popularity through SNS virals, and his passion for mead didn't stop when he had to step down and quit abruptly due to personal reasons. Kwan's research on mead continued in his house, day or night, and when he came across the European Mead Maker Association in 2018, he was encouraged to send his first entries to the competition by Mateusz Blaszczyk, who was organising Kings of Mead from Poland. There he achieved 2nd place in Metheglin, then 1st place in Specialty Mead in 2019 and 2nd in Mazercup 2020 while running his personal Mead Laboratory where he taught everything he knew about Mead through more than 120 classes for 2 years. After realising how difficult it was for folks to make anything back at home, Kwan came up with a business idea to develop the next Gen homebrewing device hoping to expand the culture of homebrewing and promoting mead in Korea. But before proceeding with hardware manufacturing business, it is important to build a firm brand as an award winning brewery/meadery for extra credibility. Hence his second meadery was founded in 2022, and their latest avenue jumped over 210% compared to the year before. So far, aside from amateur awards, Booze & Buzz Meadery has won several places in both Mexico and European Mead competition. 2023 MMC : Pyment 1st 2024 MMC : Braggot 1st Sparkling 3rd 2024 Copa del Hidromiel : Traditional 3rd 2025 MMC : Braggot 2nd Sparkling 2nd Their mission is to create the best experience in making, drinking and sharing booze around the world. Booze & Buzz Meadery Inc. is a subsidiary company of Booze & Buzz Inc, which primarily develops and sells smart homebrewing device. But before we advance with our smart homebrewing device, we decided to launch a meadery and introduce mead properly for many strategic reasons. Being recognised as a high quality mead making brand would later help them to bring their products closer to the users, and they want to position their brand as mead artisans who developed smart homebrewing device and not vice versa. (as clearly shown by LG electronics, they have launched their automated beer brewing machine with a little success) Here is a short article written about Booze and Buzz shortly after they established their company https://news.samsung.com/global/introducing-the-five-latest-startups-to-be-supported-by-samsung-as-spin-offs-from-the-c-lab-inside-program Located in the northern side of Yong-In city, Gyeonggido Province, their meadery mainly focuses on producing traditional mead with wildflower honey, and from time to time single sourced honey traditionals would be available. They are also scheduled to make several melomels, metheglin and braggot next year. Their honey is sourced from their beekeeper, who has grown his beehives for more than 35 years while practising no use of chemical agents but only environment friendly-treatment. South Korea would be probably one of the the worst place to introduce mead, or at least it was, when American TV shows (Mi'gook D'rama) is widely known as Mid (or Mead!) as an acronym. It was just devastating when Kwan literally had to grab everyone to explain through customers to retailers. Now they are starting to see a difference. More and more folks now recognise this new category, whether they are Skyrim/game of throne fans or not (even though there's no single scene where mead is actually drunk), mead is steadily becoming a thing at last. There was only roughly one meadery or 0 that opened annually since 2015, but this year they expect 4 meaderies to be operational. (10 meaderies so far) It's interesting to see how other beverages, coffee (Starbucks, 1999-) and Craft Beer (2002-2012) market changed in Korea; it nearly took a decade for one trend to be introduced and customised to meet customer's needs, and finally to settle in permanently. Consumers are now more aware of their personal preference and are opting for high quality brands backed with touching stories rather than cheap alcohol just to get drunk. There is a clear sign of this sector growing more as the trend leans towards a niche market as the preferences become more diverse and refined. Join us to see what's doing in Korea with mead! It was truly one of the greatest moments in Canadian history. Ben Johnson sprinted his way into the record books with an astonishing 9.79-second 100-metre dash at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. But his gold medal memories didn't last. Johnson tested positive for banned steroid use and lost his gold. Journalist Mary Ormsby takes us back to those emotional days but follows up with some probing questions about what else was going on with the other runners in that race. She chronicles it all in her book, "The Incredible Life of Ben Johnson: World's Fastest Man*" Steve Paikin talks to both the athlete and the author.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Many people aren't so blessed to travel and see the sites of the greater back road Americana and getting into the little nether-regions of the country so by filming all these great things I'm able to allow my viewers to live vicariously through the Journeys I take them on. It's the moment of inertia stupid, MagSafe batteries will likely return, Google will not repair pixel watches, iPhone 15 will let you charge air pods and Apple Watches if you have the cables with you, spatial video will fake the distance between your eyes, Tim Cook and Todd like the natural Titanium, iPhone 15 pro's slip to October deliveries fast, and iPhone 15 pro max is now shipping in November, iOS 17 ships today (Sep. 18) and has lots of cool new features that owners of older phones will get to use, and a few they won't. Apparently in Seoul South Korea, folding phones are everywhere but we are not convinced; Tesla has announced a new version 3 of its power wall; Carbon neutral is not a real thing; the French said iPhone 14's were bad, the Dutch say they are wrong, guess who apple agrees with? Hello and welcome to the 22nd episode of my trip! In today's episode, I will be covering my five days in Seoul and what a surprise this city was! You may read that it is a slightly boring city but it was the opposite! There are super happening areas such as Hongdae, Gangnam and Gwangjang Market and traditional areas such as Ihwa Mural Village and Bukchon Hanok. The coffee scene is superb with so many options for a trendy coffee (I recorded two episodes for my other podcast on this). There are fantastic free museums to check out such as the War Memorial Exhibition and The National Museum of Korea. A lot of walking, sightseeing, eating, drinking coffee and becoming an expert on the metro system. So much to tuck into in this episode.Enjoy! Jeannette talks to renowned theatre director, Luke Kernaghan, on the ways in which he has harnessed the power of his creativity to unlock success, the value of connections and how networking has accelerated his journey of growth, and why following your passions is the key to lifelong happiness when it comes to your career choice. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no substitute for authenticity, and you cannot truly be yourself until you've asked the internal questions required. Sometimes the forces that drive us are difficult to identify, and manifest themselves through instinct. We should always listen to our inner voice. If we are able to identify our passions, and forge a career in that sector, then working becomes a privilege, and fulfilment is far easier to achieve. Theatre in particular, thrives upon community. Those who are in the field, raise each other up and encourage support from all sides. BEST MOMENTS 'Your energy is incredible. You clearly love what you do' 'My journey was not linear' 'You don't go into theatre to make money!' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. The latest on the shocking attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The suspect in the assault is expected to be formally charged today, on counts including attempted murder. Speaker Pelosi was not home at the time, but she was allegedly the target. Millions of Americans have already cast their ballots for the midterms and tens of millions more will vote before November 8th. The latest CBS News Battleground Tracker poll shows Republicans currently are in a good position to win a majority in the House. At least two Americans are among more than 150 people killed in a crush in Seoul, South Korea over the weekend. Thousands of people had gathered in a nightclub district of the Korean capital to celebrate Halloween. A long and bitter presidential campaign in Brazil, very similar to our 2020 race, finally ended last night. Former President Lula Da Silva claimed a narrow victory, unseating President Jair Bolsonaro. At least 100 people were killed in a twin car bombing in Somalia, according to the country's president. Nearly 300 others were hurt. In India, a vast search and rescue operation is underway this morning after a century- old pedestrian bridge collapsed, killing more than 130 people.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In all my years I have never heard of anything like what just happened in Seoul South Korea in Oct 29,2022! Halloween a highly anticipated and celebrated event that gathers local and foreigners alike to celebrate in the streets of Seoul's capital has ended in tragedy. The death toll is rising and it is all said to be from Cardiac Arrest!?!? Is it the vaccine, is it the crowd cramping, is it reminiscent of the Travis Scoot event? Wtf happened? CNN‘S Will Ripley reported in this event and just happened to be in Seoul has the event unfolded. He shared an Instagram post in Seoul Korea captioned “Seoul Searching” and 12 hours later 151 souls are lost in Seoul Korea. What went wrong and how can it be prevented from happening in the future? (2 Peter 3:3-14)

Freelance art writer (often for the New York Times) and past guest royalty Andrew Russeth talks about: Why he moved to Seoul, South Korea, where he's expanded his freelance writing opportunities; a book on Chris Burden's unrealized sculpture projects, which he wrote about for the New York Times- the book includes a one-stop pneumatic subway under the Gagosian gallery; artists using assistants, and the optics that go along with the various levels of production that certain artists employ, for us as viewers of their work; the art scene(s) and community in greater Seoul, which has a metropolitan population of 25 million, nearly half that of the whole country of South Korea; the vast artist-run gallery scene in Seoul; how some of the trends in Korean contemporary art overlap with international contemporary art, including airbrushed figuration, humor, and meme culture; and last but not least, Andrew holds forth on South Korea's incredible food and drink culture (including Bibimbap and soju), which has been heaven for him.
With a metropolitan population of over 26 million residents, it's no surprise that Seoul has produced world-class athletes in a variety of competitions, but over the last several decades, it has established itself as a powerhouse sports city on an international level. Jeeho Yoo of Seoul's Yonhap News Agency, and frequent contributor to the KBO broadcasts on ESPN, joins us to discuss the rapid rise of baseball talent, how the South Korean National Football Team unites a country, and some of the dominant athletes making their way to the international scene. Yoonmi Nam is an artist whose work dances between emptiness and the frailty of things. What's left behind, and the beauty that comes from that. Yoonmi's work reminds me of the kuchi-e prints of the early twentieth century where space and soft colour creates prints that draw the viewer into the work. In this episode of The Unfinished Print I speak with Yoonmi Nam about her mokuhanga, the materials used in her work, and what attracts her to the medium. We also go into detail about her travels around the world, the “other” and how that feeling is worked into her mokuhanga and lithography, and much much more.
