Just over a year after the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act, an inquiry has found that the Liberals acted appropriately, even though the Act gave them sweeping powers. This report – by Justice Paul Rouleau – marks the end of a commission that investigated the trucker convoy protest, the breakdown in policing and governing that lead to the Emergency Act being invoked.Political columnist John Ibbitson discusses the importance of this report for our democracy, the political winners and losers and what he hopes will be done with Justice Rouleau's recommendations.Questions? A year to the day after police started dismantling the large-scale Freedom Convoy protest that had blockaded a large swath of downtown Ottawa, Justice Paul Rouleau delivered his report into the federal government's use of the Emergencies Act to deal with the movement. While he ultimately found the threshold was met to invoke the act, there was plenty of blame to throw around as to how we got there. National Post political reporter Ryan Tumilty joins the show to discuss Justice Rouleau's main findings, where agencies and governments dropped the ball, and what recommendations he makes to address problems in the future. Over the course of six weeks of testimony, Canadians heard from police and municipal officials in Ottawa, provincial representatives and even from organizers of the so-called Freedom Convoy that occupied the capital for weeks earlier this year. This was all building to the appearance by senior members of Justin Trudeau's cabinet, and the PM himself, as they looked to justify the government's use of the Emergencies Act to dismantle what had become a disruptive protest. In the second of a special two-part look at the Emergencies Act inquiry, National Post political reporters Chris Nardi and Ryan Tumilty join the show to discuss how intelligence officials viewed the convoy, how blockades at the border in Alberta and Ontario changed the conversation, and how, ultimately, ministers explained the government's actions.  Background reading: As Emergencies Act inquiry closes, commissioner says he has the evidence he needs 'No confidence' in police plan: Trudeau says he had no alternative to Emergencies Act Learn more about your ad choices. Was the Freedom Convoy a threat to public safety when it occupied downtown Ottawa earlier this year? Was the federal government's use of the Emergencies Act justified? Did Ottawa drop the ball in planning for the convoy's arrival? These are just some of the questions arising from six weeks of testimony before the Public Order Emergency Commission and Justice Paul Rouleau. In the first of a special two-part episode, National Post political reporters Chris Nardi and Ryan Tumilty join the show to discuss what the inquiry into the use of the emergencies act looked at, how it has shown how unprepared police were to handle the convoy, and what that lack of preparedness meant in the overall response to the occupation. There has been no shortage of political mudslinging regarding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's testimony at the Emergencies Act Inquiry last week—but perhaps the most important thing was that he took the stand at all. Beyond the Prime Minister answering questions, Canadians also got looks at emails, text messages, phone calls and all sorts of communications between governments and police services, different levels of leadership, different departments and more. It's important to understand how rare this is—because once we understand that, we can ask the inevitable follow-up questions: Why is it rare? Why should it be rare to see how our governments work behind closed doors? GUEST: David Moscrop, political writer and commentator; author and podcaster

[00:30] White House Ignores China's COVID Protests (18 minutes) While China faces a nationwide uprising to its authoritarian COVID lockdowns, the silence from the White House is deafening. Stand-in White House Press Secretary John Kirby said in a press conference that “the president's not going to speak for protesters” because the “protesters are speaking for themselves.” Meanwhile, Apple is aiding the Chinese government by limiting the Airdrop feature on devices in China, which protesters use to bypass Internet restrictions and distribute information. [18:50] Obama's Crackdown on the Freedom Convoy (7 minutes) Canada has completed the Emergencies Act Inquiry into Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's crackdown on the Freedom Convoy earlier this year, and the biggest revelation is that the Joebama White House intensely pressured Trudeau to invoke the act. The Trumpet has been exposing President Barack Obama's instigation of the convoy crackdown since February this year. [26:00] Maricopa Rubber-stamps Election Fraud (21 minutes) Arizona's Maricopa County has certified its midterm election results, ignoring obvious election fraud and other shenanigans that disenfranchised voters. Mohave County also certified under duress; Ron Gould of the Mohave County Board of Supervisors was told he would be arrested and charged with a felony if he didn't vote for certification. [47:15] Satan's War on Truth (8 minutes) God's Word is truth, but Satan's strategy is to blot out that truth. In the face of this attack, we must fill up on God's truth daily and hold fast to it.

Civil liberties groups are demanding that the premier testify at the emergencies act inquiry. This week was the blame game with Ottawa officials blaming the ford gov for not sending help. It's very clear now that neither the city nor police planned for anything. Not only that, but it also speaks to the fact that the decision to actually invoke the Emergencies Act was for a very localized problem. Alain Bartleman is a Lawyer and Special Advisor to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and joined Alex to discuss it.

On Tuesday, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, testified before the Emergencies Act Inquiry into the usage of the act, and the way that the city handled itself during one of Canada's worst managed protests. The question to ask now though, is who do we point the finger to when it comes to the usage of emergency powers? Do we point it to the mayor, Doug Ford, or do we go right to the top and look to Trudeau?

It's been eight months since convoy protesters took over downtown Ottawa and obstructed trade at U.S. border crossings. And now, over just six weeks, as commissioner of the Emergencies Act inquiry, Justice Paul Rouleau has one job — to get to the truth behind the federal government's unprecedented use of emergency powers that were used to clear anti-vaccine mandate protesters from the capital. Just days into the public hearing, lines have been clearly drawn between those who believe the government was justified in invoking the Emergencies Act, and those who think it was an unnecessary overreach. Today on Front Burner, host of CBC's Power & Politics Vassy Kapelos is here to get us caught up on what's been revealed so far and to explain what we can expect to come from all of this testimony.
