Things are heating up at Christie Pitts, 92 years after the famous riot there. In the first half of this episode, John Clarke and host Jessa McLean talk about the Swastika clubs that sprung up in Toronto back in 1933, how they were emboldened by the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, as well as legitimized, even encouraged by the establishment here in Canada. These clubs, furthering white supremacist ideology, attacking Jewish community members were allowed to roam around the City until the community decided they had had enough. In the second half, Catherine Crockett of the General Defence Committee for the IWW reminisces on the 'lovely riot' of 1933, its long term impact on the community. She'll also share some of the details around the planned anti-immigration rally and what organizers of the counter protest planned for this Saturday, September 13th hope to see happen.Call to Action: Register to Attend Community RallyRelated Episodes: Making Mass Actions Count, John Clarke, Professor at York University and longtime organizer, compares the 2022 strike by CUPE workers to the 1995 Days of Action against then Premier Mike Harris. She says her decision to run stems from a long-standing residency in the community and her connection with the late Coun. I have a very in-depth knowledge of the processes that go on, especially the budget and fiscal matters." 14.20 - Prefontaine speaks about her meeting with the Firefighters union and how the city could have hired permanent staff "and save us money in the long term" insteed of paying for overtime and added Workers Compensation Board claims. "I'm very much about getting the basics right and meeting the needs that we have before doing frivolous projects and shiny new builds of things."18.30- Prefontaine discusses the Louise Bridge in her ward and compares it to the repairs and reopening of Portage and Main. "I think it's odd that there was a plebiscite on that issue... I don't know why it was done and not adhered to."For her family, the new Transit schedules and routes are "very challenging" despite being close to Henderson Hwy, 29.34 Part 3 - What made Prefontaine decide to run? "It's always kind of been in the back of my mind," citing her work on other campaigns and seriovnmg on various boards. Hear her views of crime in the ward, community policing, support for housing, and homeless encampments- "I know people downtown feel afraid."As for the installation of $300,000 gym equipment in Juba Park being an example of vanity project spending, Prefontaine says, "I will actually agree with you on that."50.00- Prefontaine is on leave from her role as a vice-president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. CUPE has become involved in a lot of politcal advocacy outisde of the workplace, including the Middle East. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're back! After taking a midsummer break, we come back with some of your favourite characters from this past season including the buffoonish U.S. President, and our oafish Ontario Premier, and in the third topic, just in time for Labour Day, we'll have some genuine labour news to get excited about! We might have taken some time off for the last couple of weeks, but the new sure didn't!! This Thursday, August 21, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Dark Skies. Flight attendants from Air Canada went on strike last weekend, and they looked to be on strike for the long haul until the two sides reached a deal on Tuesday. Despite pressure from the federal government and the courts, the CUPE represented workers remained defiant after spending years doing, on average, 30 hours of unpaid work every month. Meanwhile, workers and average folk are showing incredible solidarity on this issue, so is this the Labour (Day) revolution we've been waiting for? "A Little Poke." That's what Premier Doug Ford says he wants to give the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. In Ottawa for AMO this week, Ford looked to secure his bonafides as "Captain Canada", but back at home he's still getting hit hard for school infrastructure funding, benefiting the friends with the Highway 413 route, and new concerns about the finances of Ontario Place anchor tenant Therme. Is Ford the one that needs poked? Baked Alaska Summit. For the first since he ordered a full-scale invasion into Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin was on U.S. soil and gratefully received by President Donald Trump. Three hours later, the leaders announced that they had *not* reached a deal to end the war that Russia started, and scuttlebutt says members of Team Trump were shook by what they had seen behind closed doors. Since then, Trump met with European leaders, including Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but did any of this Nobel Peace Prize baiting get tangible results? Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

In episode eight, we return to the George Brown College Labour Fair and a discussion with Ontario Federation of Labour president Laura Walton and chief steward and second vice president of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 556 Jeff Brown. We discuss the multiple issues facing the labour movement, union priorities and, in this age of polycrisis, what exactly we are working for. Speaking to the upcoming federal elections, Walton says: “I think we all can agree it's not going to be an NDP federal government. It's either gonna be Liberals or Conservatives. And I call them cancer and chemo; one's gonna kill you, the other one's gonna make you sick. We're going to be under, in Ontario, two governments that are not worker friendly, both federally and provincially. And it's going to be incumbent on workers to really embrace organizing principles … Now's not the time to be quiet. Now's the time that we're going to have to join our voices together to really push back." Reflecting on the how the trade war may impact already underfunded Ontario colleges, Brown says: “The colleges extend into so many fields in our province. Obviously healthcare, nursing community workers, but also things like all the skilled trades, forestry, aviation. I mean, these are the workers in communities that are the backbone of our economy … and the concern that being this underfunded, now with this trade war … the provincial government will use this as an excuse to further starve the system.” About today's guests:  Laura Walton is the president of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) Canada's largest provincial labour federation. Walton served as president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees' Ontario School Boards Council of Unions (OSBCU) starting in 2019. She also served on the CUPE Ontario Executive Board. With a firm belief in the equalizing power of inclusive public education, Walton led her 55,000 coworkers across Ontario to withdraw their labour for two days in November 2022 in protest of the Ford government using the notwithstanding clause to ram through legislation that imposed a contract on CUPE education workers. Previously she served as president of CUPE Local 1022 which represents the education workers of Hastings and Prince Edward County District School Board. Dr. Jeff Brown is an experienced educator, researcher, and labour activist.  He is a full-time professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences department at George Brown College in Toronto and Chief Steward/2nd Vice-President of OPSEU Local 556, representing unionized faculty at George Brown.  He is also a member of the Ontario College Faculty Divisional Executive. Dr. Shelbi Nahwilet Meissner (Luiseño & Cupeño) is an Indigenous feminist philosopher and an associate professor in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the founding director of the Indigenous Futures Lab, a pioneering hub for Indigenous feminist research and evaluation. A proud first-generation descendant of the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians, Dr. Meissner is of Luiseño (Payómkawichum) and Cupeño (Kupangaxwichem) descent. Dr. Meissner researches, teaches, and consults on topics including Indigenous research and evaluation methods, cultural and language reclamation, Indigenous epistemologies, Indigenous feminist interventions in critical social work, and land-based feminist coalition-building. As Black History Month comes to a close, the On the Line podcast marks the occasion with a fascinating look back at the history of train sleeping car porters, almost all of whom were Black. It's a story that has only recently started to be told, and combines the history of Black employment in Canada, unionization and the fight for dignity and equality. On The Line examines those long-lost days mostly through the voice of Warren Williams, whose Uncle Lee was in the forefront of the drive to organize Sleeping Car Porters in Canada. Warren is the current President of CUPE Local 15 (Vancouver), one of the biggest CUPE locals in Canada. Listen to Warren's full interview here.
