Alberta appears finished with “cash cow” photo radar. The province announced a big cut in “fishing holes”. And the UCP government was fishing for support for a Sovereignty Act motion against the federal emissions cap. The NDP did not bite. West of Centre guests this week are Carrie Tait, Rick Bell and Lori Williams.
The President-elect has threatened a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods in an effort to stop illegal drugs and migrants from getting into the U.S. Danielle Smith has jumped on board. Also on the pod, the escalating battle between Alberta and Ottawa over the federal emissions cap and using the Sovereignty Act to fight it. West of Centre host Kathleen Petty is joined by Janet Brown, Alex Boyd and Corey Hogan.

Latest episode of MFRR In Focus interviews Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi about the potential impact of new law The situation for Hungary's embattled independent media is about to become even more challenging. On 12 December, the Hungarian parliament voted to pass the Protection of Sovereignty Act. It was debated for less than two weeks and passed without any serious public consultation.7 Its stated motivation is the protection of Hungarian sovereignty from malign external threats, and the criminalisation of foreign funding to political parties during election campaigns. A new body will now be established to map and report on perceived threats to national sovereignty and identify bodies or individuals suspected of serving foreign interests or receiving foreign funds. In a country where government politicians have previously smeared some media as serving foreign interests, media have criticized the vague language of the law, and decried the bill as being part of the government's decade-long attempt to dial up the pressure on critical voices. Ahead of elections in 2024, and amidst ongoing negotiations with the European Commission over the release of frozen EU funds, the new law looks set to be another divisive issue pitting Budapest against Brussels – and create further uncertainty for media and NGOs. In this episode of the MFRR In Focus, we spoke to renowned Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi about the details of the law, what its real motivations are, and what impact it will have on the already destabilised independent media community. Guests: Szabolcs Panyi, investigative editor at VSQUARE and investigative journalist at Direkt36 Producer and Host: Jamie Wiseman, Europe Advocacy Officer at International Press Institute (IPI) Editor: Javier Luque, head of digital communications at IPI Other episodes in this series: Under illegal surveillance – the Greek ‘Predatorgate' Related links: Draft Sovereignty Protection Act poses fresh threat to independent media IPI joins condemnation of passing of Sovereignty Protection Act

Danielle Smith's Sovereignty Act is like trying to get away with amending the Constitution via a hastily-scrawled Post-it note, flimsily affixed while no one's looking. Danielle Smith is doubling down on her defiance of Ottawa's Clean Energy Regulations. Alberta's Premier invoked the Sovereignty Act, saying she'll fight the feds in court over a mandate to get Alberta's grid to Net-Zero by 2035. Meantime, Edmonton councillor Jennifer Rice is in the hot seat after burning through 19 (!) staffers in two years in what insiders call a "tyrannical" work environment. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's Sovereignty Act is now officially passed in the Alberta legislature. This week: Alberta sovereignty. Sovereign over what and whom, you may ask? Great questions, ones that finally got an answer last week when, on November 29, Premier Danielle Smith introduced her first bill, the Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act. Or did they? Already it seems, Smith has done a western walk-back of some of the bill's more controversial aspects—indeed, days after we recorded our discussion about it on December 2—making it a bit of a moving target. In any case, it never hurts to be Indigenously nervous when provincial premiers flirt with secession, especially when it could come at our expense. Joining host/producer Rick Harp at the roundtable once again to walk through the Act (such as it was at the time), and what Indigenous peoples there have to say about it, are Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies at York University Brock Pitawanakwat and assistant professor with the University of Alberta's department of drama Ken Williams. // CREDITS: “The Thought of You,” by Squire Tuck; our intro/xtro theme is ‘nesting' by birocratic.

Tensions within a federation are a frequent, normal occurrence. In Canada, one only has to think about recurrent debates over health care funding to equalization payments. But recently, Canadian federalism has been experiencing more tension than usual. Alberta's new premier is proposing a Sovereignty Act, Saskatchewan's premier expressed a desire for his province to be ‘a nation within a nation', while Quebec's government was handily reelected on a platform of strengthening provincial autonomy even further. How can a federation manage these tensions and adapt when faced with such challenges? What are the features of a robust federation? This episode of the podcast is a panel that returns to the fundamentals of federalism to answer these questions. Moderated by Charles Breton, the director of the Centre for Excellence in the Canadian Federation, the discussion features two experts. Jenna Bednar is a professor of political science at the University of Michigan and a leading scholar of federalism. Our second guest, Benoit Pelletier is a professor of law at the University of Ottawa and a former cabinet minister of Quebec. This episode was recorded during an online event held by the Canada School of Public Service and is the first installment of a partnership between the school and the IRPP's Centre for Excellence. This episode of the podcast is bilingual, with speakers shifting between English and French.
